Is It Not Possible To Assign Instance Names To Symbols Within Symbols In Flash CS3?

OK, so I have a player object. I created a symbol that is linked to the player. Inside the symbol I have 2 symbols. 1 is the sprite that displays the player, the other is a rectangle box that is used for collision detection.

I tried giving the collision box an instance name in the property editor so I could reference the collision box from code. The Player symbol is linked to a Player class I wrote earlier so it creates an instance of the Player class. The error I get is this:

ReferenceError: Error #1056: Cannot create property myCollBox on Player.

myCollBox was the instance name I gave that collision box symbol. I thought maybe I had to make the collision box also linked to a class to be exported for action script, but that didn't seem to help.

HELP Flash Is Distorting My Pictures
I'm having a really weird problem... maybe one of you can help me out.

I have constructed an image navigation system that uses a scrollbar and buttons to scroll thumbnails of my images left to right. As far as that goes, everything is working great.

The problem is that when I export the movie to a swf, Flash distorts some of my thumbnails in an odd way. It messes up the centering of the photo so that the "edge" is in the middle, splitting the photo into mismatched halves.

I have checked the fla over & over. I made sure that smoothing was off for each image in the library. I checked each image to make sure that they weren't bad before I exported. I set jpg quality to 100 when exporting. Nothing is out of the ordinary.

What could be causing such a problem?

Have any of you encountered this before???

[CS3] Flash Is Distorting The Images
I used a UIloader to load the pictures in externally. For whatever reason, all of the images are covered with pixels when they load. I just went through all of the original images and made sure that they are saved as jpgs. When I tested it out in flash, they all loaded the same as before. Very pixelly. Can someone please assist me in solving this problem. I loaded the images into dreamweaver and they looked great. But in flash its the opposite. Maybe their is some setting I have to change in flash...... I don't know. HELP.

Distorting Images In Flash?
i've imported a jpg file into flash and i want to distort it so i can create a perspective. i select the file and i select the free transform tool - but i am not allowed to distort it the way i want to... i can make an image in flash and accomplish this, but i can't do it with images for some reason... anyone know a way around this? am i missing something?

Help. Flash Is Distorting My Elements
hi everyone, maybe someone can help me with this. I am using Flash 8, and I am in one movie clip a few layers up from root. For some reason whenever I add or import an element (text/pictures), it comes to the stage streched big and distorted. Its almost like flash is streching everything to compensate for somthing else. THis only happens in this one movie clip in the entire flash movie. Everything else works fine. Is this a setting Im missing? Anyone have any idea what im talking about? Thanks - C

Jpgs Distorting In Flash With Masks
Hi,

I have two jpgs in my movie of which one of them is revealed by a mask with mouse movement.

My problem is that it (the mask) seems to be distorting the image when it moves over it. (they are on identical x and y pos's).

Is this just a flash bug or can it be corrected???

Flash Distorting Graphics In Wierd Way
Hey all..

Please take a look at this site I am making:

It's pretty much finished except flash is kind of compressing my images in a strange way.

Particually:

* the envelope has a jagged edge
* the two curves at the top have look a couple of pixels out (but they aren't out in the fla and png)..
* the O in the 'Lifes about choices' button is strange

It's kinda in every images though, like the 'love' button..

.... They are all on lossless/png setting
I think this must be some common problem that I'm not really aware of 'cause I'm still new at flash. Can anyone tell me how to fix it?

They are all very subtle but I have to get them right 'cause its a paid job.

Bitmaps Distorting In Flash Under An Animation
Hi, I'm working on a Flash movie that has bitmaps and an animation. My problem is that the animation distorts the JPG underneath, like ripples on a pond as the animation plays. I have enountered this problem before and thought the fix was to reset the X & Y co-ordinates of the bitmap to 0.1, 0.1 (they are centred on the stage so they should be 0, 0). However, I tried this, and it's not working. Any ideas? I'm still working with Flash MX, but have seen/solved this problem before... I should point out that the JPG is also in a graphic symbol.

My Flash Banners Are Distorting When I Scroll The Page
Help!!!

I'm a relative beginner with flash, however I have created a couple of banners and they work. After I have uploaded them to my website, I get a strange effect in internet explorer. Whenever I scroll the page the banners appear to 'break up' and distort. it doesn't do this in fire fox.

I have already used some javascript to get around the 'click to activate' problem in IE, but this problem was also occuring before I installed this script.

Can any one suggest how I can solve this problem???

Resize Flash Movie To Browser, Without Distorting
Hello again!

I'm currently looking at ways to load my flash movie into a browser without changing the fundamental design/layout of the site.

Make sense - then look at my example

Try re-loading the site in with different browser sizes its fantastic, especially as the site remains in proportion.

Does anyone know how to do this? What and where to put my code?

I would think its a mixture of front and back end? Anyone have anything similar i could look at?

... i just don't know and its driving me bonkers!!

STrange Distorting Effect On Images In Flash 6 When Using Masking?
Hi

I have created a bunch of flash files which use masking layers to show wallpaper on a wall.

I use to pictures of the same wall exactly, but one has different wallpaper, then a mask the new wallpaper in white and reveal slowly, it looks great, but the image distorts in flash 6, 7. In flash 8 it is fine, no distorting.

Does anyone know a fix for this problem? i've tried breaking the images up (Control + B) but that makes no difference.

I would use Flash 8 preferable but for some reason all the text doesn't appear if uses only have flash 7 player not flash 8 player, does anyone know a fix for this too? (im only using arial black which everyone already has on their PC)

Higher Screen Resolutions Distorting Images In Flash Site
Hi all,

i have been designing flash web sites for the past couple of years now and have always optimised my sites for 800/600 and 1024/768 screen resolutions. One of my clients has asked me if i can make their site fill the browser window width and adjust the height accordingly, for any screen resolution.

I have exported my movie at 100% Dimensions and have a javascripted button that detects the screen resolution and opens up a window of exact proportions of the flash site.

However, i get problems of images being distorted and slightly pixelated. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how i could get rid of the distortions ??

800 / 600 no distortion
1024 / 768 a little distortion

there is a little distortion as you go up higher in resolution HOWEVER, if i used 1600 / 1200 there is no distortion at all ???

Full Browser Flash Guidelines - How Do I Stop Images An Pixel Text Distorting?)
Hey guys,

I need to make my site full browser flash because when a portfolio element is clicked in its menu, a black overlay fades in and a project swf is called. Simple enough, but of course the overlay needs to fill the user's window otherwise it will look disjointed.

When I publish to full browser flash I have set the dimensions to 100% and got rid of the margins. The only problem is that the image and pixel text is distorted because they aren't at their proper size! Is there a certain size I should build to?

I had one idea that I could have a flat colour background that uses the stage class to scale it's size whilst the content stays the same size, the black overlay would use the scale class to define it's size too.
Would this work? I would obviously need to make sure that the central site stays central.

Any ideas?

Editing Graphic Symbols By Copying And Pasting To Make Slightly Dif Symbols

I am using flash to create moving people symbols. I created a "singular person" symbol and saved it, I then copyed a few to make a "bunch of people" symbol, when I go to edit these copyed and pasted symbols each saved symbol changes. Also I am saving them as graphic symbols at the moment.

Overlapping Symbols Inside Symbols With An Alpha Tween
Hello,

In the attached example, Is it possible to prevent the purple overlap area from showing and just be red since red's on top? I have characters that use symbols for arms, legs, etc. and I want to fade them in and out sometimes. The problem is, the areas where the limbs overlap look weird so I have to resort to converting them to shapes on one keyframe. This seems limiting and annoying. I was wondering if there's a command, extension, or property to fix this. Thanks in advance.

what is the difference between creating a graphic symbol from an image with it's own timeline animation and creating a movie clip symbol from the same image that can be animated in the main timeline?

Or do I totally misunderstand the difference between the two?

Distorting PNG
I'm using a PNG file in my flash aniamtion. When i try to apply a motion tween to the PNG it distorts and streaches funny. Any idea why it does this or how to stop it. If i leave it on the stage it shows up fine but the minute i apply a Motion tween to it it goes all funny.

I have a MC with two animated JPG's as the background and an animation on top of it, whenever I test the movie, the animation on top of the background distorts the images just like if they were broken in smaller animated portions. At first, the animation on top was part of the background's mc, then tryed fixing it by putting the top animation in a new mc in a layer above the background but it didn't work.

Why is this happening? Can some one help me with this please?

Listeners On Symbols With Symbols Inside Of Them?
I have a symbol (a) with a symbol (b) inside. I have a rollover listener on symbol (a) however, when I roll over symbol b inside of symbol a I loose my "MOUSE_OVER".

It is as if symbol b stops its parent from being considered "rolled over"

Am I building these wrong? or mis-understanding something?

I need it so that the rollover for symbol a works no matter what is inside it.

I'm trying to distort text, in a similar way as in photoshop. the note below is in the transform-distort help section, instructing me to "first convert the characters to shape objects. i've been using flash for years, but i have never done this, and CANNOT figure out how to do it. ideas?

Note: The Distort command cannot modify symbols, bitmaps, video objects, sounds, gradients, object groups, or text. If a multiple selection contains any of these, only the shape objects are distorted. To modify text, first convert the characters to shape objects.

Distorting Background

On some computers there is a rippling effect occurring on the background behind the cat as it moves. On other computers there is no problem...
Firstly can anyone notice the rippling background and secondly if you can see it, have you got any solutions

i have a bunch of photoshop images that i have created and imported into a flash movie. in the movie, i need to distort one of the images to create a 3d effect, but you can not distort symbols, bitmaps, video objects, sounds, gradients, object groups, or text in my version of flash mx 2004.

does anyone know any other possibilities i could try, to be able to freely distort my images as part of a movie?

Distorting An Image
ok we'll here's what's up. i've used Swift 3D to make a rotating box. now what i want to do is put an image on each side of the box so when it flips over it's a new image. i tried doing this in the program but the lighting created washouts in a bunch of places and it just didn't work. so i figured i could just add the picture to the flash file and match it to the face i want it on frame by frame. the problem is you can't distort and image without breaking it up and then it just crops off a little section of it. does anyone know what i can do to get this to work? either via scripting, masking, or something along those lines? thanks for your help guys!

Distort Not Distorting
I'm trying to figure out how to distort movieclips so that they have perspective.

Each image window(shown below) would just be a flat JPG I import in, but the image would inherit the movie clips distortion, thus making the image window and navigation distorted too.

How can I do this? I know I'd have to do it with actionscript, but where do i even go to figure out how to distort the movie clip like I need it?

Any suggestions?

I am trying to use the free transform tool, but it won't let me adjust the position of just a single corner without trying to scale or skew the rest of it. When I hold down cmd it appears to let me pick up just one corner, but the moment I let go of it, it snaps back to its original position.

I'm pretty sure this is under modify>transform>distort, however, it won't ever let me select it. Or perhaps under the 9slice scaling thing.

Swf Distorting Audio
I am using the audio component in flash 8 to place an audio online. It sounds fine on my comp and it sounds fine on the web but when I play the swf online the audio gets distorted.

Distorting A Bitmap: Is It Possible?
Hey yall,

I need to take an image and have it flip over like a page in a book. However, I need to distort it a lot so that the angles of the page look realistic. Currently, I was able to take a rectangle shape, distort it, and then do a motion tween that made it flip over realisticaly. I then made a screen shot of the flat page and distorted it in photoshop to match the shape in the motion tween. This worked alright, but it's kind of choppy.

I'm wondering if there's a way I can distory a bitmap or graphic/mc that I can properly flow the page-turn in flash. Any ideas?

Distorting A Graphic - Why Does It Rotate?

This is very difficult to explain without visuals, but i'll try.

It's something too simple.
I have a square box.. no border.. just a square shape. Not converted into Symbol.

On Frame 1 it is Square.
On Frame 10, i click the "Free Transform Tool", then from it's option boxes, i select "Distort". On the shape, i click the Left-Top corner and pull it inwards, and then i click the Right-Top corner and pull it inwards.

That's it. I give it a Shape Tween.

But what it does is, it rotates... that is... it spins the box between frame 1 and 10 and brings it to the destination shape. Why does it spin?! I dont' want it to spin. I want it to stay stable and just let the two top corners pull inwards between frame 1 & 10.

Any suggestions?

LoadMovie() Distorting Text
Hi

I am using the LoadMovie(); script to load a file "external.swf" into another .swf.

It works fine, however the text of the "external.swf" is not a clean once it is loaded in, and it is clearer when I open it direct.

Why is this? I am using MX2004

I have played with alias text, it makes no different.

Distorting Bitmap Graphics
Are there any plugins or extensions availiable for Flash MX 2004 that will allow me to distort bitmap graphics, without having to convert them to vectors?

Either that, or allow me to distort text with conversion.

I have a piece of text in a flash graphic I am creating that I need to be able to dynamically update to show different values, and of course having to convert it to a vector and move it around everytime I change it, would be far too fiddly to be of any use.

Distorting Image Rectangle ?
I want to distort an image by dragging its corners into a non-rectangular configuration; essentially a mimic of the perspective distortion tool in Photoshop 7+.

Is there a way to write custom API in AS that could do this? If not, is there a way to evaluate the color of specific pixels in an image so that a pseudo-bitmap based on the original could be used instead?

[CS3] Image Distorting Issue
I downloaded a Flash file and was editing it as necessary. When it came to editing out the images, I had some MAJOR issues.

I'd like on the bitmap and Import the file of my choosing. When it came in, it was extremely distorted, as if the quality was minimal. I tried all different file types and they all had the same effect, some worse than others. Am I doing something wrong or is this possibly a bad file I downloaded?

Distorting The Dimensions Of A Loadmovie
I'm on the design-side of the house when it come to Flash, but I do my best at actionscript to get by.

I've created a movie that has a scene with an image of a computer monitor (angle shot). I've taken a video and run it through Sorenson Sqz to make it into a .swf file and am using [loadmovie] to run the swf within the image of the monitor. That works fine using an empty mc so I can position it where I need it. I want it to look like the video is playing on the monitor image.

What would make it more realistic would be to resize (or distort) the loadmovie swf to fit exactly in the image of the monitor. By that it would be at a perspective angle since the monitor image is not front facing. I tried adding a yscale % with my loadmovie script but that scales both left and right side to the same percentage.

I've attached a jpg of the monitor to help visualize...

Anyone know how to apply a different percent to each side of the box...but only in the y-dimension?

Problems With Image Distorting :(

Maybe this problem or something similar has been already posted here, i did a search but couldnt find anything to the point, so i'm just gonna ask you.

I've a problem with some images moving in my .swf.. they distort when moving! its not much of a flash movie, but its driving me nuts! I checked the size, and they're all 100% so that's out of the question..can anyone help me?
