Flash :: General Question-do You Need To Know Any HTML.....

General HTML Question, NON FLASH
Hey guys.

I have a little problem here....

I want to make a window that has no border, no scrollbar, no none of that stuff you typically dont see in advertisments. I'm juts not too sure how to do it.... I was looking at another website's code and it had the javascript code:

javascript:launchwin('bios/kurt.html'%20,%20'newwindow1'%20,%20'height=500,wi dth=600,resizable=1')

This is what I want to happen, but is the only way to achevie this through javascript?

Is it possible to make the page borderless and scrollbarless, and just make it a pop-up from the parent window?

I don't know if I'm making sense, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Loading Published HTML - General Question
hi,

i have a general question: i wrote a website with lots of classes, and everything work smoothly.
after i published it to HTML, and then open it in a browser, it hangs nearly always if a button is pressed the first time (firing tweens, to open an image gallery, etc. ...) >> for example the button that should move to the right, just moves half way, and gets stuck, or the page that should fade out at the same time only fades halfway out.

after reloading the page, or simply waiting a moment longer, it works fine.

since i am quite new to programming OOP AS3, i understand this behaviour in terms of that the site has to load first all it's classes, etc. ... ?

am i on the right track here, or is it something completely different?

i hope i made myself clear, thanks for any hint guys!

New To Flash, Not HTML - Template Customization Pointers And General Guide Required

Taking my first foray into the world of Flash and I've purchased this template and have a few Qs regarding making it my own.

How much of what do I have to learn in order to be able to customize the template and include my own content

My experience with Flash is limited (running Flash 8) so I'm starting from scratch but I know my way around HTML quite well.

How do I make the hyperlink buttons actually link to something?

How do I create scroll bars for text content?

General Help
Someone please help me. I am about 85 percent done with my flash introduction for my band's website and I can't seem to close the deal. I don't know how to properly end a flash session. Also, I know there is SO much more I can do with it, but I don't have enough knowledge to do so. there are 5 pictures with always the same top and background... and then different buttons...
Well first thing, i still do not get how to load .txt in a frame, pretty stupid but first time for me working with flash... was reading a lot, but by now didn´t really get it.
Next thing,
the buttons always load (of course) a different txt, but should always use the same text-frame (i got a nice one with cool scrolling)
The pictures are all in the main-scene... where do i put the text-frame and how do i 'link' all that stuff?!
And please try it in a slow way...

I have a scenario in flash that I would like help in understanding the best way to tackle it.
I have 3 scenes with the same 3 button navigation. When one button is clicked the other 2 do an animation across the screen and stop at a certain place. But I do not want to create an animation for every scenario since it will be 9 scenes. I would potentially like to script something that said. if button 1 is in x postion than play this animation and then go to scene x. etc. etc.
Please let me know if you have any suggestions on the easiest way to create a complicated menu or storyboard system.

Hi, I am currently working on a big project. I am going to make a movie with a DVD interface. Within the movie I want to have subtitles (easy, obviously), but since it is supposed to be somewhat like a DVD, I would like to know if I could make a Subtitle option to be on or off.

Also, when I make movies, I seem to have trouble synchronizing sound (preferrably music) with the animation. This is because I cannot play portions of the sound within the layer, and rather I have to let the whole thing play. Is there a way to avoid this and play portions of the sound so that I can see if my animation is synchronized?

I need to know if this is possible after I learn Flash:

I have a HTML/Fireworks project which is a bit "heavy on beauty" (slow loading). High-speed surfers will have no problem, but dial-ups might run away. I'm thinking of using Flash for a top layer, in a currently blank middle section, and letting the rest load underneath.

-Can a top layer of a "flash" site be shown, while other layers are still loading? How?
-Portions of a web page made with Fireworks change size radically based on the monitor resolution. I've heard Flash "scales to size". If so, how do you control the look of an overall layout when using Flash elements in a HTML site?

how when i click a button on my site, it will open a frame on my site ( i dont want my site to open external html) i want it all contained within flash if possible
i really need someone to give me a refresher course on flash as i cant remember much about it aat all and rather than trapse through loads and loads of tutorials, if someone is willing to give me their time and help, im willing to give credit where i can.

I'm looking for a bit of general advice and help with the way I code stuff. I have set up a simple movie which changes a couple of objects scale on 3 different buttons as an example.
This is generally how I work and it is quite effective but I feel like I could be making my life easier. I have tried to learn functions etc but never really knew how I could apply it. The point is that when I have many objects moving about and all doing different things (positions, alpha, scale, rotation etc) it can get a little complicated and the script gets very long.
How would you do something like this? Can ypu spot any flaws in the way I am working?

My problem now is that these examples are not explained very well. Does anyone know a good site (or maybe has some kind of documents) that show me the basics of action script? Arrays In General
I've seen them in other people's coding, tutorials, examples, explanations.... But I've yet to come across a situation (that I know of) where an array would have helped me. So I'm curious, what do people use them for? I understand them well enough (I think, although maybe if I really did I would know when to use them), I just want a few examples of arrays put to use.

Ok, I have read many turtorials and I understand all this about motion and shape tweening. But what i don't understand is how they are incorporated into a flash movie.

So to get me uncofused i would like someone to expalin to me just a few things tweening can do in a flash movie and if you had the time, lists some methods of = Making a man walk across the screen, moving his legs. how would i Do this? please help me. Thanks in advance.

General Cd Rom Query
i have just demo'd a cdrom project for a client and on taking home the demo he informs me that the sound is all jumpy on his boolsheet machine and images are a bit jumpy too.
I used a pretty high mp3 compression rate (112kbps) and full 100 jpeg rate. is this unadvisable and do people generally put advisory notices for machine spec on cdrom cases?
I'm an artist and animator not really a techy type (no offence) so i've never really crossed this hurdle before.
any advice?

Hi everyone,

I have a question regarding preloaders. My site is built in dreamweaver with a few .swf in my dreamweaver pages and I created myself a particular preloader for each flash file.
Actually, it looks like they work so far but what I would like to achieve is to create a general preloader (load all the site's swf files in advance before entering the site).
IS this possible? should I check something in dreamweaver?

does anyone know why you can stick a scroll bar on a static text field and it works just fine but when its dynamic it wont work.

please help me. I've created an all flash site.. now that it's got it's general format, I'm not so sure about it. I need a sure fire way to detect if the flash player is installed (I made the site using MX, and I'm fairly certain it needs the latest or nearly latest flash player to work) and if not to send it to an html site. (and not bother advising about downloading the player)

In addition, I'm considering looking for someone to consult with about this site. Although I'm not on an unlimited budget I'm in need of some advice for the overall site. I don't wish to subcontract the whole thing, just to get someone willing to help me along with advice. Where should I look for that?

General Help For Flash MX
Flash MX is causing me problems with my computer. I use a laptop to run MX... whenever I try to navigate to the desktop, in order to import an item, the program freezes and crashes. I've reinstalled it, but i don't know what to do?

Okay, so I've created and made myself comfortable with flash...
Just now i have questions relating to audio...

Is it best to fit sound clips as you go along or is it just best if you create teh whole movie first and go back from the beginning and integrate the sound..?

Also, how can i become more familiarized with Actionscripts? It's made easy, however when I wnat to code some things, it is quite difficult. Probably the hardest of everything...

General Help Question
I have a scene in my Flash MX movie where there's a dynamic text feild that takes up the majority of the stage, and i gave it a scroll bar. I have alot of text in the text feild. When I run the movie it works fine, it scrolls alright, and the text stays where it's supposed to.

However, if I save, exit flash and come back, i see that the text feild made itself much bigger, so that it would fit all of the text without having to be scrolled down. This makes it go down past the limit of the stage. Has any one else had this problem? If so, how did you fix it?

I read in a previous thread that you can make a general preloader in a main .swf that shows the loading of external .swfs without having to put a preloader in the external .swfs.

i'm new to flash and have created a simple 20 frame intro animation for an architecture website. my site: http://web.mit.edu/jbradd/www

the site contains lots of jpgs., lots of text (not dynamic) and finally the site is broken into movie clip animations. while i'm sure this is not the most efficient way to build a site i was simply trying to achieve a clean website that only changed slightly upon button press. my inspiration was: www.kdlab.net

what i found is that the site is heavy and unnoticable on search engines. how do i resolve this and make the website a guaranteealbe quick load. is actionscripting the answer??

I've got loads of free programs like Flash, dreamweaver fireworks..etc being as i'm doing a CIW course (web designer course).

I just got my software and was having a mess about. I've figured quite alot of the basics out. I even made a little "Test Stickman Movie."

I was wondering a few things though:

1.) How do you make it so that objects can say go off screen to the left or right? When I do it, it seems to show at the side of the stage area? (example - someone walking off screen)

2.) How do you fade the font? Would you use black font in one keyframe, and white in another and tween inbetween the frames?

I am not a web designer by trade but am a designer hoping to add a notch to his belt and create a website for himself at the same time.
I have a couple of questions really.

I want to know whether its best to do each page as a scene or seperate fla/swf files. For example my cv contains different sub sections that have the same menu and footer but the main body only changes.If using scenes how do i refrence them using actionscript.

Also i wondered as the menus at the top and the footer is obviously at the bottom whether i should be trying to load the bit in the middle in as a window or frame i have a little knoweldge of HTML and a learing more and more on flash everyday but as it says i am a Junior.

On the websites, sometimes the .swf file will appear to be resizable on the web itself, while other times it won't allow you and stats it's control by Macromedia Flash Player 7. How can I make a .swf that's controlled by Macromedia Flash player 7?

Scenes General Help
I was just wondering if someone could give me some overall help with using scenes. I've never used them before so I don't know anything about them. I've always loaded up new movies and such whenever I wanted a new scene...which seems to be a lot more difficult, time consuming and it increases size fairly greatly.

So... yeah... just some general help and tips, tricks, etc. in using scenes...

CMS General Question.
I want to build a CMS (Content Management System)...easy enough.

However..I want to be able to make one for XML (create the XML in FLASH and export to PHP to save)

It will need to read an exsisting XML file...and be able to either ADD or SUBTRACT nodes (and their child nodes) to the overall XML scheme.

Im kinda at a loss as to a GUI for it...

I was originally thinking something along the lines of:

1.) tabs at top to pick the XML file (product type) to be load/edited

2.) once the product file is chosen.. have the CURRENT XML layout be parsed in, into a visual representation in a TREE component.

3.) from here...they can either:
a.) select a product in the tree layout (which will populate some textFields so they can be edited and re-saved)
b.) click ADD NEW PRODUCT button to add a new product (and child nodes) to the TREE by filling in the BLANK input fields and hitting the SAVE button.

wanted to bounce the idea of you guys..see if you have any feedbakc..unforeseeable problems I might not be aware of.. or generally any links or ideas to stuff you have seen.

Id also like to have as many TREE component tuts, links you can find.

never used it before...nor have I ever tried to CREATE (and export) XML from within FLASH..

Need Some General Direction
Hello all -
What I'm looking for here is some general direction. For example, if I said that I wanted a way to 'not have to re-edit my FLA every time I wanted to make a new entry to my flash based blog' a good suggestion would be to dynamically load the entries from an XML file.
Okay. I know how to do that.
Here is what I don't know how to do:
I want users to be able to edit their own pages. I don't need anything fancy right away, just a 'blog entry' type thing with a date associated, a set of 'favorite links' or something. I feel that if I could figure that out I would be well on my way to doing whatever else I need.
I'm guessing what I need is some type of a log-in system, and a way to write what the user wants to the server. These are the things that I don't even know where to start with.
Again, I don't need a detailed step-by-step thing, something like "use flash to sent a variable to PHP and then use a PHP script that does Y". Thanks for any help!

can anyone help me with my dragable windows in flash?

i have a button with the script

on (press) {
_root.attachMovie("homepage","homepage",1);
_root.homepage._x = 348.9;
_root.homepage._y = 216.2;
}

this works and does what i want it to
now on the homepage windows which you can drag is a movieclip inside you have another button which allows you to drag that window

now i did this again with another button/page like bellow

on (press) {
_root.attachMovie("staffpage","staffpage",2);
_root.staffpage._x = 348.9;
_root.staffpage._y = 216.2;
}

this also works but as you see is on a new layer

now that homepage is on layer 1 and staffpage is on layer 2 i added the script inside the movie clip of

on (press) {
_root.homepage.startDrag();
_root.homepage.getNextHighestDepth();
}

to try and bring the back layer forward and to be able to drag it the drag works but cant seem to figure out how to get the depth of the homepage to be on the top off all other pages if you know what i mean if you dont let me know i'll give more info/sample if needed

can anyone please help?

Are what I am seeing the differences of actionscript 1.0 and 2.0 or are they different techniques? I also saw one person put the code for ball gravity inside the ball and I saw someone else put it in the main movie and said they were trying to make it more "object oriented"? If anyone and everyone could help clarify these things for me it would be great.
