Open Source Debugger For Flash, Flex And AIR
As developers at De Monsters we weren’t totally happy with the current Flash, Flex or AIR debuggers out there. So we decided to create our own debugger called De MonsterDebugger. Today we’ve got a great new version that we want to share with the community for free.
De MonsterDebugger started out as an internal tool that helped us with the development of different ActionScript 3 projects. The past several months we’ve been working on a new version of this internal tool. With this new version you can explore your live application, adjust properties and run methods all at runtime. You can trace objects of any type (String, Array, XML or even custom classes) to De MonsterDebugger and it will show the complete structure of that object in an easy-to-read tree structure. De MonsterDebugger is made with Adobe Flex and brought to the desktop with Adobe AIR.
Because De MonsterDebugger isn’t our core business we’re giving it away for free! All the sourcecode is open source available under the GNU General Public license.

Flash Open Source Backbutton / Deeplinking Tool
In the past couple weeks, a lot of attention has been paid to the SWFAddress script written by Rostislav at asual.com. While this is a huge step forward, I wanted let everyone know about another (better and easier) solution to consider using.
My friend Matt Tretter at sunKING Digital has been working on a StateManager class for Flash for a few months now, and has published an article and a working sample here:

Why should you use StateManager as a solution to your Flash back-button and deep-linking needs??
1. This is the first method that doesn't break in Safari when you navigate to a new page.
2. Unlike SWFAddress, is clean and Object Oriented (less ActionScript code required).
3. Thanks to JSInterface, you can import external JavaScript files directly from Flash.
4. While it integrates seamlessly with Geoff Stearn's SWFObject , it doesn't require that you use it. In fact, unlike SWFAddress, it degrades gracefully if JavaScript is turned off.
Kudos to Matt for getting this working well. Hopefully we'll be seeing more and more sites integrating back-button and deep-linking into their functionality, now that there are a few open source tools out there.

Open-source/3rd-Party Flash/flex Tools
To all and sundry,
First off can some one please provide a list of 3rd party /open-source tools that reasonably emulates the Flash 9 authoring environment and secondly are there any tools out there that can convert from SVG format to Flash 9 (AVM2) native vector format...
I've checked out a few things online at Open Source Flash including SVG2SWF converters but conversion is typically restricted to Flash 8 and below...

I am working on a project to put paper catalog (eg, like a jcrew catalog) online and enable interactive features such as turn-page, zoom, rotate, and click to shop.
I am evaluating whether to use Adobe Flash or Adobe Flex, and appreciate any advice from this forum on:
1. What are the differences between Adobe Flash and Adobe Flex that are important to consider?
2. Is it faster to develop using Adobe Flex than Flash?
3. Which technology produces better performance? Most online catalogs I've seen have been kind of slow: they take time to load the page and then take time to sharpen images. Any suggestions on how maybe through buffering/caching to improve the performance? how much is the performance limited by network bandwidth given the size and number of images on a catalog page?

Pen Tool In The ADOBE FLASH
I used to drew the picture in the flash .Now its version becomed to 9.0,but the "pen tool" has not any changed. The "pen tool" in the Photoshop is very nice ,easily,useful and comfortable. I can draw any curse by it.
Why the "pen tool " in flash is not good enough ?It still a trouble.

[NEWS] Adobe Brings High Definition To Flash Videos

Adobe Flash CS4 Won't Open Anymore :(
Hello all, beforehand I thank you for your help. I use Windows Vista and I took all precautions and did scandisk/disk defrag/ and have numerous utilities to keep my computer clean so it can't be that...
I have been using Flash CS4 pretty regularly until about a week ago and i never had any real problems but now every time I open up Flash CS4 it gives me an error message and closes. How Do I Open Source A Flash Application?
I'd like to know how best to open-source a flash application.
I'm part of a team that's coded a flash avatar application used by 1000s of children.
Our app follows the standard avatar/ chat route... users choose from a variety of pre-set options to decide how their avatar looks. This avatar can then be imported into various games on our site that have the avatar files embedded.
The avatar application itself is made up of 3 core flash files that interact with a database where users' details are stored.
The only thing we'll be making available is the three fla's of the avatar and documentation explaining how we made it go (which people can implement/ignore/ improve on).
For the purposes of open sourcing the code, people won't have access to our database as for testing we use xml files that replicate the database responses. So we will include these.
We want to make it open source so that users and other interested people can find new ways of implementing it.
But I need some help knowing how best to present the files we have for open-sourcing.
Has anyone ever done anything like this before? Has anyone ever seen a project like this before?
If so, please let me know how you did it/ how it was done.

Hi all,
As many of you know there are quite a few Open Source programmes out there now that allow people without huge bank balances to have the power of professional programmes.
A good example would be GIMP over Photoshop.
I want to know if there is an OS alternative to Macromedia/Adobe Flash? I can't really afford the real thing at the mo.

hello, the agency i am now working for use macs and adobe flex 3.0, it's gonna take me some time to adapt as i am a pc user used to program on flashdevelop.
i have a cople of issue with flex and i was wondering if ppl could help me out
- ctrl+O does not exist in that software??
it seems that the only way you can open files is with your mouse... and the keyboard shortcuts are not editable? i mean i did try in the prefs, but i cant create a new shortcut, whats up with that? anybody knows a way to create a shortcut?

the client of the project i will be working on needs the project to be in as2, however i am not sure i can create a project in flex in as2, only in as3. am i wrong? if so, where would that option be when i create a new project?

I've taken a flash file (displaying clocks in different timezones) posted on this site, made some tweaks to the actionscript as I'd like to use it on my intranet site

Does anyone know of an opensource or paid for script that allows you to create a band profile where a musician can upload his music like myspace, music.com, tagworld. It can be in either flash or ajax, but all Ive come up with is the jw player, and the xspf, and I will have to do all kinds of mods to them to make it work in my application, it would be nice if somebody has stumbled on to an Opensource app that I can adapt the user database to my own application...
All i need is simple

A pool game written with AS2, FLA file saved in Flash8 format.
Don't think I'll ever gonna finish this. Or that I might eventually going to rewrite the whole thing in AS3 with appropriate classes and etc.
I created this thing a year or 2 ago. No class, not optimized, no whatever. Just straight up coding in 1 frame. Take a look at the script, edit it, use it, whatever you like to do with it

Open Source FLV Player (now With Flash 8 Support)
I updated the FLV player on my site, and added a version for Flash 8, albeit not as good as the version for Flash CS3.

Looking For An Open Source Flash Image Uploader
I am looking for an application that I am not sure exists. Basically, I want to embed a flash application in a normal html form. This application would let the user browse an image on their local machine and once selected, let the user resize, crop, and/or put text on the image. The changes would be made on the user's machine and the resulting image would be sent when the form was submitted.
Has anyone seen anything like this out there?

Anyone Other Then Flex Can Help Me Out On This Please... HeadLab News Ticker...
If you check on the tutorials section , in special effects section under MX. You will see 4th one down is News Flasher.
I been trying to get this thing to work with no success. I have followed the directions. I downloaded the zip file for the component. I opened the movie. Made a dynamic text field with the center / html / multi line settings. Made it myText instance.
I created the notepad text file and copied and pasted the exact lines they had on the tutorial. And put the & infront .
When i publish the ticker, The news is shown with the html codes all there. It also only shows the first line and the "the best flash learning source " line. With all the stupid html tags and nothing else. Can anyone tell me what im doing wrong. What are the two layers in the fla for ? Im so helpless

XML News Ticker Source Is Forums New Posts
Guys im needing help once more, I was wondering if it is possible to create a news ticker that reads or shows the latest posts of a forum. The one I have seen works with XML and you type in what you want to see, but this would need to be more dynamic and be able to read the php file. Here is the one I know of:
