Two Questions For YOU To Answer.
1). I'm having a little trouble with having a flash object make a sized pop-up window. I can do it if there's only one or two files on a page. But, if I want several flash files to do a different pop-window on one page how would I?

2.)Also, is there a way for people to download pictures that are in a flash file?

Hi All,

I have made a flash movie as seen at http://www.coffeemamma.com.au and would
like to change the following:

I'd like to generate three random numbers from 1 to 5 inclusive but I want
to ensure that each number is different - e.g. 2, 4, 1 (not 2, 4, 2). I know
how to generate ONE random number, but I'm stuck on comparing them to see
whether they are the same (and if they are, then generate new numbers until
they are unique).

With the three numbers I would like to load images based on those numbers -
e.g. '_image_2.jpg' then '_image_4.jpg' then '_image_1.jpg'. This part is
fine IF I can generate the numbers.

I'd also like to have the images come to the front when they are hovered
over with the mouse and then to go 'back' to their original position when
the mouse moves away. This I'm completely stuck on.

I'd also like to be able to put the newly loaded images into certain
positions (as per the example) rather than only loaded to (0,0) coordinates.

I also want to be able to have the images masked as they come in (as per the
example) in order to avoid white corners on the top images.

I also have a page as per http://www.wasabi.org.au/wodonga.shtml which has
some of the functions I want to use, but I can't seem to get some of the
functions working in my new movie...

Two Questions Need Answer Or Direction ?
1. Where can I find out how to change the color of the scroll bar to match my sites color scheme?

(Is it javascript??..is it code at all?..not something like chromeless is it??)

2.Is there a certain way to design a site so it is can look decent in BOTH resolutions of 800x600 and 1024x768 ??? I see all these sites like 2A (and most in their gallery) that look sized right for both resolutions. Whats the trick here? Do they put their movie into a TABLE in an HTML document?? and use 100% in the properties??

hi! i know flash a lot for animation, but i'm not very familiar with setting and dealing with variables, and i'm having this little problem:

in my movie, i want the user to anwser 2 questions that has 2 choices each. so if the answer is 1a-2b, how do i tell the movie to go on a specific frames?

2 Hopefully Easy Questions To Answer
My first question is about loading movie clips. What i have is one main movieclip, and on top of that i want the new content movieclip. But i don't want it to replace the background. How would you go about that? With levels? I'm not sure on how to do levels if that is the way that is best to go about it.

The other question is i have a rollover menu, that slides in. On the rollOut of the slid out part i want it to gotoAndPlay("Menu_down"), but for some reason its not working, and i've been trying to figure it out for quite sometime now. Thanks in advance!!

Can Anyone Answer My Simple Questions?
Hi! I'm really new to flash, and I'm not understanding it very well. I just need someone to help me with some real basic stuff. For example, what do the little symbols in the timeline mean? The squares and circles...I was just working on a cartoon, and had just selected something I wanted to turn into a symbol, but I accidently pressed F7, and now all the frames between the one I was working on and the last one have little white circles in the timeline, and are blank when I try to play the video! How do I get the figures to show up again, and what do the open circles mean?

More Scroller Questions That Nobody Will Answer
I took the vertical scroller from the tutorial Kirupa posted, and then I tried to marry the horizontal scrollbar that Plonker sent me (Good lookin' out!) into the same SWF. The same problem ensued, one scrollbar works fine and the other shoots the mask way off to the side. What's with that? Are the scripts conflicting? Why doesn't Debugger address this? I even renamed the Bar, Dragger, Up_btn & Down_btn to Ba, Dragge, L_Btn and R_btn - in the script, in the library, and all instances... Does anyone have any feedback? Has anyone else ever run into this?

I have a deadline in like 2 hours and I need to know how to detect which frame a movie clip is at..

i mean, i want something to happen if it is at that frame one, and something else when it is at frame 20..

I am trying to print two pages. My .swf file size is 45kb. Everything prints ok, but the size of the printing document is 2.4mb. My computer hangs. I am printing just text. I have tried all workarounds, but nothing seems to work. Is there anyway I can make the printing file size smaller?

2. When you click on that button how do you continue playing the swf and then at the end load one movie but when you click another button at the beginning it plays the main swf then loads another movie?

1. What is the script for when I want to a text box and use the answer in the text box that the user has given me later on in the flash movie?

3. How do I make a quiz that counts up the answers at the end of the... quiz and not immedeatly tell you that you are wrong.

Flash 5 To MX - Several Questions To Answer If Bored
hey all,

Ok this is something im hoping will make my head clear as its completely destroying my head and has done for ages.

I used to know flash 5 quite well, that is, i was no programming genius. I didnt know what a method was or a class and i still dont, tho i probably use them sometimes.

I aint too bad tho, i can do some stuff but this is more about theory and not one point examples.

Heres some questions and some things might be good for others given a search.

Id be most grateful for your time,

* Flash 5 to flash MX is a big upgrade for me and prob many others. Some problems i have relating to this is the new event system, i dont really understand. I would love to be able to keep my code very centralised but i dont really understand the theory. I understand you can now target movieclip paths and attach events directly to them? Does this mean i can do onClipEvent (load) with _root.ball in the first frame?

*In c++ so far i understand c++ has a main function and when a function is called from this the function name outside main takes control of the program and is terminated before being passed back to main? What acts as main in flash? The frame itself?

*I hope to start colin moocks book on AS2.0 however time is stretch and i really just would love to be able to search this forum by names of stuff.

Can Someone Answer These Questions About Flash And My Browser?
HI guys,

can someone tell me (1)how big i need to make my flash file for it to take up the whole height of the browser window,(2) how to get rid of the borders around the edges and(3) how to center the movie so it appears in the center of the browser window???!!!

Im a html and css man but i cant see any reference to borders in the code that flash has generated.

Ive been experimenting with different sizes in flash ( by drawing al box to fill the stage) and then testing the movie in a browser but cant get it right.

Flash Is Strange, Answer My Questions?
Yes I know I can learn Flash at kirupa, I have learnt how to do motion tweens, and the others such as Actionscrpt have no meaning to me at all.

I know I have to start at the basics but I would love to make a layout in Flash, and where can I learn other things, what is there to learn? I have never worked with Flash before, I dont understand it at all. We've all been there.

Also what is actionscript, how does it work?

Q: there is a menu that fit the width of the buttons... depending wich button is selected.. it looks dinamic.. i [and probably few of us] made it just tweening some frames.. but i think that there is a more kb-less and easier way.. to do that.

XML Quiz - Randomizing Questions & Level Of Difficulty Questions
Hi Folks,
I've been tasked to do a quiz in XML with a few caveats and I need some help.

The quiz needs to pull randomized questions from the XML file and also I need to have this sort from 3 levels of difficulty. For example, a user would possibly get fed 3 easy 3 medium or 4 hard questions.

My XML is set up as follows:

Im just kind of lost on this one and I was hoping for some insight all the way around on this. For some reason XML in Flash scares me. It always ends up being nightmare. i need this to work to where it will add 20 to whatever is already in the input text variable. the button i am using this on is a checkbox. when it is un-checked i want it to subtract 20. Can anyone tell me how to do math into a variable?

I have been working on my site...and when I test it..everything looks and works fine. When I put the .swf files on geocities...I view them...and the whole site/movie is "STRETCHED" to my monitor resolution. (1024x768) I checked on res of 800x600..same thing!! When I created my movie...the dimensions were 700x350. WHAT IS HAPPENING?..and mostly,..how do I fix it?? Also,....when I click on one of the buttons to call on an external .swf.......it doesnt play right. Everything is fine when I "TEST" movie....but on the server....I get these two problems.. PLEASE...give advice if you can. Thanks -whispers-

P.S. Update...I uploaded same files to another server..all works fine...Theother problem is the resolution problem..why can you even pick a stage size if it doesnt matter on the finished product?? GEEZ..LOL..

I have been trying to do something using action script for days now, and despite having no luck asking about functions last time, I am trying again to get help from the comminuty here at Flash Kit.

I am using a function, and whilst in that function I want to move a said Movie Clip (with an instance name) accross/up/down the screen steadily. If while in the function I use 'set property' to move the movie clip, it moves it so fast, that it appears to be instantanious!!

1) Is there anyway to use some sort of delay while in a loop?

2) Is there anyway while in a function to goto a frame and play, but return to that funtion afterwards?

Any help will be appreciated.

Under the advise of the forum I broke up my one swf(2.0meg) into 10 seperate swf's. I call them by >>>>

on (press) {
loadMovie ("company.swf", "dummy");
}

each movie has its own button..

the problem is when i press the button again it-reloads the swf into the blank mc (dummy) all over again. How would I change the code to check if its already loaded then play... like "IF swf is there PLAY, if not loadMovie then play" Something to that effect. If someone has a better idea I'd sure like to hear it.

Hi. i have asked this before, and the answer was great! But I want to ask it again because the answer wasn't something I had in mind, so now I will ask it again, but more specifically:

I know all about those "chromeless windows" you see at http://www.microbians.com, but that's not exactly what I want. I made a Flash site that has it's own title bar with a close button incorporated into it. Is there a way to launch the Flash site from a web page so that the flash that launches does NOT have an Internet Explorer title bar at all, nor does it have the microbians title bar. I'm sorry, i'm terrible at explaining stuff. Anyway, i just want it so that the ONLY thing that launches is the flash movie, with absolutely NO title bar or pre made buttons, like from microbians. If this is possible, please let me know. Thank you.

If i load an external swf into a dummy clip on the mainstage and basically park it. Can I call it later to _level.whatever and the swf will be already be cached?

I believe it may be because when you load movies in flash you must specify a level. _root = level 0. If you are loading your sound movie onto a different level then calling _root. won't access it.

i programmed the main site to load three separate movies and the whole thing works flawlessly on my computer. when it's uploaded, the 3 small movies don't load in to the main movie.

the code for the initial movie launch is:

loadMovieNum ("swf/portfolio.swf", 1);

it's an action on the main timeline. then the numbers have:

on (release) {
unloadMovieNum (1);
loadMovieNum ("swf/portfolio.swf", 1);
}

etc etc

as i said... this works perfectly on my computer. i loaded the site as a main swf and a directory "swf" with the other portfolios inside.

thoughts?

I am planning to go from Flash5 to MX. As I know now, it is possible to load jpg-images dynamically. In Flash5 I have used a preloader that is counting bytes loaded. If I load an image into a Flash MX-movie, will my preloader also count the bytes of that image?

you would need a true false variable too
that would start off with one value that would be changed by the last and first frames

OK can someone please help me with this as it's gettin beyond a joke.

I'm kinda new to flash but have built a site and everytime I view it in the web browser there is a white border round the edge.

I've tried various different publishing settings with no joy. I've read other threads about this and they give the same advice about changing the html doc. using "0" as a value for the position of the page. I'm completely stupid when it comes to this as I can't see where it needs to go? I'm using Flash 5 and simple text to change the html doc is this ok ?oh and I'm on a Mac. Can someone help me with this in plain english as I've lost my head trying to sort this out.

i have a horizontal scrolling movie which works fine. but I can't get all the images i need on one line. if you look at the slider movie, you can see i have several images i want to add to the line. someone suggested i shrink them and then when the movie plays, expand them? i have no idea. they just wont fit on the authoring environment space provided.

Why won't this work:

2) attach mc's to path other than where you've loaded the symbols?

I need to import symbols and give them actions in the main movie eg.
_root.LoadMovieNum("blabla.swf",1)

then access the symbols inside _root.Fred + _root.Bob + _root.Jim
but this doesn't seem work and I don't want to have to load the symbols several times to use in different paths

Any thoughts?

I'm having problem with some duplicateMCs whose color I'd like to change with the color object methods.
The original MC has two animated nested MC and I'd like to change the color of these two nested clip relative to the duplicateMC. In fact, I've created a color object and seemingly the path to the two nested MCs is correct, but the result is that the color doesn't change and besides, the corresponding nested MC inside the duplicated MC does't longer follow the animation, but is stacked at the origin.
Could anyone of you suggest any solution?

Ok, I kind of posted something like this earlier, but let me explain my problem a little better...

I have a flash site where the menu links cause a rectangle (just a graphic) to fade in to 75% transparency in the main area of the site, and I am having no problem there...but after that rectangle fades in, I want to put scrollable content (with scroll buttons on the side) on top of the rectangle. That's it!

I just need to put my content (let's say, text) over the rectangle, so that when all has been loaded, you will see scrollable content (with no background itself), on top of a transparent rectangle, on top of the background.

Please tell me there's a way to do this?

I built a small game that writes the name of the player and the final score to a text file based on the numerical value of the final score. I would like to create a file which is determined by the players name. For example, if the players name is John, then the file name will be john.txt and the final score will write to that txt file.

I am using the following script.
