Third Party Tool To Show Or Hide Panels In Flash
Hi, I used to have a program that did this function:

Panels like the actions or the timeline one could be hidden, and if
you moved the mouse to the edge of the screen, they would appear, it
also worked with Photoshop (i think).

I'm looking for it, I had it installed on my old computer, and I recently
changed to a new one, but sadly I don't remember the name of that
program.

Flash MX 2004 Pro - Reviews BAD
Hi.

I was thinking of getting a copy of MX 2004 Pro and read the reviews on Amazon:

They SUCK. Is this a worthless POS? Four different people did nothing but pan it. Now I'm sure the review on here is great, but how am I supposed to reconcile that?

This thread is for reviewing any type of resource used to learn Flash or Actionscript. Any type of resource is ok; books, video, websites, etc.

I'll start with a book:

Macromedia Flash MX Production Techniques by MD Dundon (published by Macromedia Press)

Target Audience:
From the beginner Flash MX developer to the intermediate Flash MX developer.

Review:
Although it's written by a well respected author, I have to say this book was a let down. Overall, it's just "ok". There aren't any strong examples in the book and it's a really boring read. The paper and print quality is horrible. To me, any book that is about multimedia should be printed in color on high quality paper. Why do these books cost so much if they're not? There are things to learn in the book, but you may not make it to them, as you'll fall asleep first. I really wanted to learn some best-practice production techniques from this book, I did not. Skip this book, there are far better resources available.

Overall Rating:
I give this book at 2 out of 5 stars. Too many cons, not enough pluses.

What is there in the way of 3rd party software for flash that can do things like write to files on the users machine, edit the users registry and create projectors (or standalone flash pieces) that connect to the internet for live data ?

Can anyone advise me on this - and/or point me to some articles?. Who are the players in this field?. I know about http://www.multidmedia.com/ but are there any other that I should know about?

3rd Party Flash Streaming Service?
Im looking for a 3rd party service which will allow me to remotely stream high quality video (and audio), which I can embed into a website. The video has to be private, so the only way you can view the stream is if you are viewing it from the site that has the coded embedded into it. Free or paid services are fine.

Its going to be used for cams, where people have to have a valid membership to a site in order to view it.

Can anyone suggest something like this?

Previews, But Won't Export Right
I'm using MX 2004 pro and I have a script which reports mouse positions to text boxes and rotates a MC to 'aim at the mouse. When I test scene and movie it works perfectly but in the EXPORTED .swf the MC won't rotate and the text boxes are blank. I've checked thoroughly my export settings and I can't figure it out.

Here is the script I used on the 'cursor'

Hi, I'm almost wanting to purchase a plan through Influxis.com, but while searching for reviews and other sites who use Influxis, I found it hard to come up with any results.

For example, I know a lot of companies who use BrightCove and I can also find people by searching through Google who use the service.

I'm just trying to find other sites who use the Influxis service so I can compare and see what it looks like before I buy it, and also find some reviews on it.
As of now, Influxis offers very good pricing for it's plans.

Supplying Flash Adverts For 3rd Party Sites
I've been asked to create some ads to go on a site that specifies "Advertising requiring the use of plug-ins like Flash and Shockwave must utilize "sniffer" code to detect if the user has the required plug-in and display an alternate image if the user does not have it. ".

How do I do this? Are they expecting me to supply the HTML/Javascript that loads either my .swf or a JPEG? I would have expected the host site to have a site-wide function to handle that. What is the normal way of doing this?

Live Flash Streaming For 3rd Party Programme
Hi

I want to use a programme called Wirecast to produce a series of webcast television. My problem is that I want to stream h.264 as flash as it is the most ubiquitous platform on the web, and delivers the content in the quality that I desire.

The makers of Wirecast ( Vara Software) at present are only able to give me the option of the streaming in Real player. This is apparently because Adobe won't allow them to include the code to stream flash.

I know that I am not alone in the frustration this causes, and in fact I have held off purchasing the software package until it has the flash capability, even if that version were to have a premium added.

Could someone at Adobe please help me, is it possible that you could license your product to them?

First off can some one please provide a list of 3rd party /open-source tools that reasonably emulates the Flash 9 authoring environment and secondly are there any tools out there that can convert from SVG format to Flash 9 (AVM2) native vector format...

I've checked out a few things online at Open Source Flash including SVG2SWF converters but conversion is typically restricted to Flash 8 and below...

Nested Movie Clip Previews?
I've got a flash movie with multiple nested looping movie clips in it (flash vector graphics animated to loop within movie clips, etc.) I'm using only motion tweens within them.

For some reason when i scrub or playback the movie timeline it only shows me the animation that's directly keyed in the movie timeline & doesn't include any of the animation contained within any of the nested clips' timelines. The only time I can see the nested animation is if I Ctrl-Enter to bring up a preview SWF in Flash Player.

For example, I have an image which continuously slides through the scene & loops once through. This image slide is its own movie clip. That sliding movie clip is contained within another movie clip which sequences multiple image slide clips to occur on a rotating basis. When I playback the movie timeline or scrub through it, I see none of the images sliding. In fact, even if I playback the movie clip that sequences the other movie clips I still see nothing. If I playback any of the core "sliding image" movie clips one at a time, they appear just fine. If I do a ctrl-enter SWF preview, all image slide loops work just how I wanted them to.

Is there some setting I can tweak to enable seeing nested animation within preview playback? My friend claims that he is able to see anything via timeline playback that he could via SWF preview. I'm using Flash 5.

Publish Previews Pop Up In External Window - Not In Tab...
...and it's VERY annoying! If I just want to check out some trace variables, or the debugger, I have to keep swapping between windows! I've tried the prefs, but unless I'm blind, no luck.

Launching 3rd Party Apps From Flash While In Full Screen Mode
I was told that there is a script(s) that can be used to Launch 3rd party (ppt, pdf, etc) apps from Flash while in full screen mode. When the the 3rd party app launches, Flash window is reduced and after working with the 3rd paty app like saving a PDF document and when clicking on Flash app window it resumes to Full screen mode. Can some one point me to this screen.

FYI: if in full screen mode in a Flash app for CD-ROM, and if you try to launch a pdf document, it is launched in the background on then PC and in foreground on the Mac. Currently we use Director to control save frile from CD-ROM but sometimes it is a pain. Help will be much appreciated.

Motion Tween Previews But Doesn't Work In .swf
I am trying to do a very simple motion tween with a letter of text but it is going blank in the test movie.

I created a symbol of the letter "T" and then made a simple motion tween of the T falling down. This works absolutely fine until I rotate the second of the keyframes. As soon as I rotate the second instance of the "T" it will scrub just fine but it wont work in the "test movie" mode or after it's published. I am using a motion tween with Sync, Snap, and auto rotate on. I tried the EXACT same methods on another symbol and it works just fine. Is there something special about Text symbols?

Preloader Previews Ok In Simulator But Does Not Work When Uploaded
Have a slight problem with the preloader in my movie.

The percentage text and data size text updates ok but the progress bar doesnt appear.

It works ok when i preview/simulate it but not when I upload it to site

I am not sure I like Macromedia.

What are these DevNet Resource Kits? Should I just budget for them? Are they just part of the relationship like the Microsoft Licensing debacle? Are they worth the money? Do I have any alternative?

Every time I get involved with Macromedia, I end up confused about what I need, what I don't need, what's included, what's extra-charge-even-though-you-need-it-to-make-the-thing-you-just-bought-work-right, etc. So, any help or opinions would be great.

Brush Tool And Eraser Tool Troubles
i've been using flash for over a year and a half and i've NEVER came across this problem.

when i go inside a movieclip to edit it, it won't let me use the brush tool or eraser.

unless i draw a circle around the area i want brushed or erased.

what the crap did i do?

keep in mind that it works normal when i'm on the main timeline.

Fill Tool - THE MOST ANNOYING TOOL EVER
I'm trying to draw stuff, but the fill tool never works when I want it to. I try to fill something in, so I mess with the options till it works, but sometimes.. I CANT FILL IT IN AT ALL!
