Actionscript Books?
I'm looking for someone to recommend to the best books they can think of for learning actionscripting. I am a person who has little to no experience with programming, but consider myself fairly intelligent and able to comprehend most things fairly easily.

But, actionscripting is kicking my ass. lol.

SO...if anyone could recommend some books for me...the most comprehensive...or the easiest to follow...I want to finish it feeling as though I'm got a good handle on the understanding of the language, be able to do fancy schmancy stuff with it, but still be able to use it as a reference later.

Thoughts? Comments? suggestions?

Hello everyone,

I am still a beginner when it comes to actionscripting in Flash, and I wish to become a skilled Flash designer and developer one day. I have come to the conclusion that the only way to achieve this is to think actionscripting. I would like to think I am a good designer...but unless I have a good understanding of the coding I will get nowhere. Does anyone have any suggestions for books I can buy? I guess websites would be good too but I am not behind a computer long enough to sit down and try some tutorials.

If anyone has any suggestions of books, please post the link and description.

I need to learn the basics of Actionscripting 2.0...I have the Actionscript book " Macromedia Flash 8 ActionScript: Training from the Source" but I am still lacking the basics... I don't know when to use certain functions and where to place them. I have the hardest time with some of the most simple projects such as creating a preloader correctly. I really need some advice...I got a job offer and I am lacking basic actionscripting knowledge...I want to ensure them that I am a great candidate for this entry level position and I can learn the materials...just need a good teacher that all...

I have used Flash for a while now, and I just got MX 2004. I know Flash MX pretty well but in no way am I fluent in actionscript 1.0. I'd like to read a book to improve my actionscripting skills but I'm not sure where to start.

I am looking for a comprehensive actionscript book, prefferably with diagrams, that covers both the basics of actionscript and takes the reader through to much more advanced script.

Colin Moock's book "a definitive guide" is good, but does not have diagrams (which i find very helpful in the leraning process).

Any ideas out there?

Is there any book or web site to help with understanding actionscript? I have basic knowledge of actionscript: controlling the timeline, controlling clicks and keypresses, simple things like that. I am starting to learn more, but I still rely too much on copying and pasting from tutorials (which becomes difficult when I'm making something that requires a little customizing). I want to get a full understanding of why things do what they do in actionscript. Basically, if I have an idea in my head, I want to be able to do it on my own; with little or no reliance on tutorials and such.

Hi, I started using flash a while ago and got a few books on actionscript but never got so far as to read them. this was before 2.0 came along.
My question is, can i still learn from these books or are the differences in 2.0 so great that they are now useless.
Also, what are the major actionscript differences if that's easy to answer?..

I've been using Flash for around 4 years now with a strong emphasis on animation rather than actionscript. As I develop my skills I want to be able to do more and more powerful stuff with Flash which I am not capable of.

I have difficulty getting my head round actionscript at the best of times (not very mathematical!) so I'm looking for a book(s) to lead me into actionscript, understand the basics and offer tutorials and examples for me to work through.

I've been on one course for the basics but seem to have got no where!

Can anyone recommend any good books? I'm using Flash 8 so books which work in this version would be good.

I'm wanting to learn AS2 and figured that going through a book is the right way to go.

Can anyone here reccomend me a good one to start with?

I've used actionscript before, but only the bare basics such as buttons and preloaders for my animations. Oh and a simple website i've created.

With programming, i've studied the fondations of java. Enough for me to understand the concepts of programming but not enough for me to make any java applications. And also Macromedia Director as well. Made a game with that.

I've had a quick browse around and found 2 which seems alright.

I've been programming actionscript for some years now, but I'm self taught and I thank I sometimes could do thinks better and more professional if I had the knowled. I've been looking for some advanced actionscript 2.0 books, that is books that skip all the basics and does not start by explaining what a variable is.

Been looking at "Essential ActionScript 2.0" by Colin Moock but else from that I can't find any interesting.

Does anybody here know some good and advanced AS2 books, they can recommend?

Hi. I've made web pages in Flash and I've used Actionscripts but it's been a good while; I think the last version I was on was 4, 5, or 6. I don't even recall which.

I need to dive in again and I need to take a crash refresher course to get myself fully up to speed with changes in the software and sharpen up on Actionscripting big time.

I'm rusty to the point of feeling like a beginner, even though I know muscle memory will kick in once I get rolling.

Any opinions out there regarding the best training books for the job?

Good Actionscript Programing Books

how you all feeling today hope your fine

I'm on the look out at the moment for a good programing book be it actionscript or a more general focussed book, what I am wanting to learn is a better method of how to model and solve problems with code.

I have all the normal programing books such as moock and the foe but they only cover the use of the language, what I want is a better understanding of how to break problems down in small and more managable chunks of code.

My house mate was talking about UML but I am not sure if this would relate to flash am I correct?

Good Beginner ActionScript 2.0 Books?
I am a graphic designer who mostly works in the print environment, occasionally working in web. I am probably at an intermediate level with Dreamweaver and Fireworks, but a beginner in Flash. I know about the stage, the library, the timeline, tweening....etc. However, I would like to begin to learn more ActionScript. There are so many books offered to learn ActionScript that I don't know where to begin.... Can anyone recommend a good text for learning ActionScript at the beginner level? I became a Flash user about 3 months ago. I am still very much a beginner, but I am working my butt off to become an expert. Unfortunately I am not able to take face to face classes on Flash and Actionscript, so the only course of action I am left with is to work my way through tutorials.

I'm new to this interesting forum and I'm hoping I can find some help here. I have just started to teach myself Flash and I am looking for a book or online tuts that I can learn ActionScript 3.0 from. So far from looking in my local book store I have found a wealth of literature that would be helpful if I was trying to integrate a Flash site via ActionScript 3.0 with a database, or some other programming intensive application - but sadly, I'm a simple artist, I can make the pretty pictures but cutting code makes my head hurt. I'm looking for something a little simpler to help me with making buttons and basic user interface elements - the hard "code" type stuff I'll tackle later.

So, any pointers??

Also, could someone point me towards a good resource for the basic elements of ActionScript 3.0?? I am using the Adobe ActionScript Language and Components Reference at the moment but the samples provided go beyond displaying what the simple code elements do, eg: I want to make my button load a web URL, I tracked down that I would need to use the element: NavigateToURL(). But the sample is very confusing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone advise the best online tutorials (preferably laid out in some sort of order) and maybe even online training/schooling for flash?

Also, are there any really great Flash MX books that cover MX & Actionscript in some detail? I have "Flash 5 Creative Web Animation" and it was fairly helpful, but I think some of the time the actionscript explanations are a little vague and the application of it never gets to a really high level.

I've just completed a semester long course in Flash MX and some actionscripting at the University of Toledo. I have the drawing fundamentals down reasonably well but due to time limitations, we barely scratched the surface in actionscript. Even though we did some fun things with it, it was just enough to whet our appetites.

I am looking for a book or books that will further my education in this area. I would prefer something with a tutorial format as opposed to a dictionary format. I've seen books like the Sams series. Are these any good?

Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated.

I am familiar with flash and have done a lot of basic design with flash - but now i am ready to move on to more advanced projects and wanted to know if anyone can recommend some good books.

I would like to build a flash seating planner - so that would entail loading a list of names, having draggable objects, and then be able to drag names to tables and have flash save all those seating positions.

Lot's to lear - so can anyone recommend any good books that can get me on my way?

Most books cover basic flash concepts, or basic actionscript concepts - but i am looking for a book that would help me plan and layout my flash application from start to finish.

i've been working on flash 5.0 for a year now and recently on flash mx 2004 pro.
Ive rarely played with any actionscripting.
but now i want to take this thing seriously........... ive been thru ur tutorials and they've helped me a lot....
the problem is i cant stay online much... so i wanted to ask abt some material on hardcopies i.e books.
considering my experience would u guys refer me books on flash 5 flash mx2004 n action scripting.............. apart from actionscripting i would say im above beginner level.

Well...2 years after a one day Flash class, looks like I will finally be working on a pretty intensive Flash project here at work and I haven't looked sideways at Flash since V.4, and even then I only knew the basics. Gah! What to do?!

Knowing this project is hot on my tail, I have looked through a million types of Flash MX and Flash Actionscript books on Amazon trying to find the best ones out there, but there are so many! I am hoping maybe some users here could suggest some good educational informative Flash MX and Actionscript reads? *crosses fingers* The less boring/tech heavy the better

Bought CS3 But Haven't Read My MX Actionscript, MX2004, Books. Should I Read Them?
I just bought CS3 and I am now debating whether I should read my Flash MX Actionscript bible, Flash 2004 Bible. I should have read them, but It's just hard to fit the time in.

Would I benefit from reading these books when CS3 is Actionscript 3? How much functionality is lost when scripting in Actionsript 2 and 1 as compared to Actionscript 3.

Would it be wiser for me to just learn Actionscript 3 properly and get a book on Actionscript 3 than waste my time on reading old scripting and technology?

Also is MC tween compatible on CS3, actionscript 3.
