Animated Masks? (with Feathered Edges)
I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I'm setting up an interface, and some content boxes are slowly revealed by a mask once the animation runs. I decided I didn't want just straight lines, so went to edit the Movie Clip with mask applied. I basically have a rectangle which expands and reveals the entire content area. Only, when I edited the shape (which is grouped in the mc's timeline) to add a stroke and the hand-drawn stroke style, but when I preview it, the edge of the mask is as straight as ever. Is there a good way to create a mask with uneven edges? Also, on the subject of feathered masks, how are they done? Is it just a matter of a mask and a layer over that with a gradient on it (which gives the illusion of being part of the mask)?

Feathered Masks?
Hi all,

I was wondering if there was a way of creating a feathered mask in Flash?

So that the edges aren't hard edged and the movie playing beneith the mask gives the impression of fading out at the edges.

Hope i have explained myself ok, i couldn't find any examples!

I really want to know how to do a feathered mask in flash. I am sure it is possible, but can't find any examples of what i mean.

So that when a movie passes out of the masked area it fades away instead of being cut off with A sharp edge.

Feathered Masks
Is there a way to make a feathered mask (a mask with a soft edge) so that something can look like it's kind of fading into the background? I tried softening the edges of a fill then turning it into a mask, but I got nothin'. This would really help make my stuff look better, so if anyone has any input, please indulge.

Gradient/feathered Masks?
Newbie to this forum. I have two images and would like to create a amsk that moves with the mouse and reveals the lower layer image through the top layer one. I would prefer to do this using a feathered shape rather than a sharp edged one. Is there any way to accomplish this? A tutorial somewhere or something would be fine, haven't been able to find anything yet.

Feathered/gradient Masks In Flash?
is it possible to create a mask that has a feathered edge as opposed to a hard edge? i know its possible to 'fake' the effect if the masked object is moving across a solid color, but i need it to work between two photographs. essentially, i have two superimposed photographs, where the one of top is moving across a static one beneath it. i want the animated photograph to have a 'blurred' edge, as it moves across the image, but can't figure out if this is possible in flash using masks, or if i have to do alot of pre-production in photoshop. any ideas?

Edges Of Masks?
Does anyone know whether it is possible to make the edge of a mask anything other than a crisp line? I have some smoke that I have drawn and it comes up from something and can be seen through a mask. I want the top edge of where the smoke dissapears to be a gradual fade, and I can't get the mask to do it. I can't put something in front of it to do the job on the smoke layer (in the animation) because I need the opacity to be 0 behind and infront of the smoke because it needs to be in a game where there are different backgrounds - so if the mask can't do then I can't work out how. (I can't fade out the smoke itself either because when it rises up it needs to be 100% at the bottom and it is one long line of smoke).

Hope there are some ideas.

Masks With Soft Edges? How?
I've seen masks with soft edges on many Flash sites...I am in need of this effect on a project I am working on, but I can't seem to figure it out...I have tried a gradient fill and making a shape and softening the edges...those don't work. i have the same question as a post that was put earlier, hopefully somebody will reply. I wanted to know if there was such a thing as a mask with soft edges. One site that i have seen that has it is:

after the presentation that they have, it loads the regular html page with flash embedded on it. it loops a movie on the top right hand side, if you look closely it shows a masking effect on a design of circles. hopefully you are able to see it. If anyone can tell me how this is done, i have tried everything but i cant get anything to look like it.

Help With Animated Masks
Hi, maybe someone out there can help me. i want to use actionscript to animate a mask in flash 5 but for some reason it is not working.

the animation works fine when it is unmasked.. but as soon as I make it a mask it doesnt move..

is this even possible

Animated Masks
hi guys,
i have to output my movie to QT, which means i can't have any nested movieclips.

So, I'm trying to get rid of all the mc's, and make them into graphics.
However, here's the problem.

I have one animated mask which is a movieclip. When i turn the mask into a graphic, it doesn't seem to work. The masking doesn't show.

Am I doing something wrong, or can u just not use a graphic for an animated mask?

I was given this logo and was told to do some kind of flash to it

I was thinking the arrow could move around the outline of the logo so only what the arrow has moved over is shown through a mask.

I'm very rusty on mx 2004 (havent been designing in flash since v5)

I tried to motion tween a square mask but when the arrow goes around the curves it doesnt look right. I also tried shape tweening but that still didnt help.

Is there an easy way to do an animated mask like that with out having to go frame by frame?

Masks And Animated GIF's
Hello,

First time Flasher here. I have been playing around with Flash, and I must say it is very neat.

I was playing around with some of the tutorials here (very nice site btw, Kirupa). I did the Lightning Mask successfully. Very cool.

However, I played around with exporting and found that when exporting to an animated GIF the effect was not what I expected.

I think I am correct in saying this, but wanted a more expert opinion on the matter.

GIF's are single layer, but can contain multiple frames within them. Thus animated GIF's, however, masks will not work with them because of this "limitation"? Is this correct?

If I am incorrect, please explain how a mask can be exported with an animated GIF.

Well it seems something is a miss. The above was done in Flash MX, when I export the flash to an animated GIF, the mask is not present. However, if I do the same export in Flash 5, it works. Bizarre. So ignore my previous question. I will figure out what I am missing in Flash MX when exporting.

Animated Masks
i am trying to make a vine "grow" as my preloader. I have my MC of the vine in a "masked" layer but can't for the life of me get the mask to do what i want. everytime i make a shape tween to illustrate a little bit of vine growth, the tween gets all messed up, shape hints are no help either.

i've seen similar effects where a line of text is written out in cursive but none of the tutorials I've found go into any detail as to how to build a proper mask for something as complex as what I'd like to animate. how many more tutorials do we need in this world where someone shows how to make a ball move all over the screen revealing what's underneath?

Problem With Animated Masks
I have two assignments for my computer class involving animated masks. One is a TV with scrolling text in it and the other in a word scrolling across the screen revealing gradient colors beneath it. Both assignments I can get to work by playing the FLA file in flash - until I try "Test Movie" or exported the SWF which is what I need to submit. There it doesn't animate, and the mask doesn't work. In the TV one the text doesn't appear and in the colors one the block of colors appears as a square. Obviously the mask doesn't work.

I am a beginner to flash, doing a "flash review" unit when I've never done it before (I was put into a higher level computer class for my other programming skills but I'm a beginner with Flash.) I'm using Flash Basic 8 free trial at home, but at school we have Flash MX 2004 and I have the same problem.

Does anyone know why this mask doesn't work? I can supply the files if necessairy.

Creating Animated Masks With Movie Clips
Using Flash MX 2004 for DUMMIES, I'm trying to create an animated mask. They suggest the following: Create two movie clips and place them on two separate layers. Enter an instance name for both. On frame 1 of the layer that will be used as the mask, add the action:

InstanceName.setMask( );

Put the instance name for the masked animation between the ( ). Replace "InstanceName" with the instance name for the background movie clip.

But once I add the action and go to test the movie, the screen is blank. Any suggestions. Your help is appreciated.

Straight Edges... Sharp Edges?
IS IT POSSIBLE TO DRAW LINES... BOXES... WITH SHARP EDGES?!?

I have a problem!!! Why is everything I draw rounded off at the edges. And I have just spent the past 2 hours trying to find options to straighten these edges out... NOTHING. Not only if you draw a box, but a line, erasing lines... Everthing becomes rounded off at the edges. WHY!?! Please HELP!?? GOD WHY!!??

Hi I'm new to flash and so far I love it!

Feathered PNGs
Is it not possible to feather and soften the edges of an image on a transparent background in PS3, and then import it to Flash as it looks? I have done this with PNG24 and Flash still kills the edge to where it is hardened with no feather. Please advise.

Feathered Shadows In Flash 5, Please Help...

Soft / Feathered Mask Ideas
Hello everyone,

I am working on a site with a scrolling series of large images. I need to mask them, and the designer wants a feathered or soft mask. The images scroll using a standard scrolling script, and I already have to have two layers being scripted to move at the same time because the mask reveals and hides a version of the images with photoshop effects (like moving behind an xray screen type of set up).

I searched the forums here and while I found one suggestion for creating a soft mask like effect, it requires multiple layers with separate masks of slightly decreasing size masking images of increasing alpha percentages. Therefore I would have to be moving seven layers or so of large images at once (the effect works well, but not with such big jpgs moving around...barely scrolls anymore).

It would be great if anyone has a workaround they have found or some insight... maybe I'm wrong that you can't have a feathered mask... who knows? If you think there is no other solution than what I've tried you could let me know to so I can report back to the designer.

¿How To Enlarge Masks On Rollover While Shrinking Other Nearby Masks?
Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to acheive a similar effect to the main 4 buttons, at this site, http://www.nationalgeographic.com/forcesofnature/

There is a grid of 4 rectangles, each quadrant is a mask/button. When you rollover one quadrant, the mask/button enlarges, and the other 3 mask/buttons shrink. This all happens inside of the fixed-size grid.

Can anybody lead me in the direction of a tutorial or let me know the name of the technique so I can search out help resources on my own?

Create Non-animated Equivalent Of Animated Flash 8 Animation
Hi, I'm working with a template that includes Flash. It's bad enough I've never touched Flash before this project, but I have to actually work with someone else's engineering of one (I'm retrofitting a purchased template)! LOL

Anyway, all I want to do is to save a completely non-animated version of the animated version I've managed to perfect. The plan is to use it on sub-pages of our presentation so that people only have to experience the animation when they land on the page. Not when they're navigating around. I've already tried a couple of things including saving an image map version. All that did was present me with an error message that certain components weren't included, which is tentatomount to being non-usuable to me for now.

So, is there a way to tell Flash, "Hey, this looks great, now give me a static version of it with working links and everything!".

Animated SWF Is Not Animated When Included In Another Movie As A Clip
I have an SWF that, when run by itself, is an animation of a graphic equalizer display. But when I bring it into a new movie as a movie clip (I want to change the alpha, throw up some text, clear the txt, change the alpha, etc), the animation does not work, and all I get is the static images.

Edges Getting Cut Off
Everytime I do an image in Photoshop, and transport it over to Flash, the edges of the right and bottom side are cut off, not actually in the program, but when I export a movie. Say I make a picture 400x100. and it has a 1 pixel border all the way around. After I export the movie in Flash, the border is gone from the right and bottom side, and is added to the top and left side, what in the world is going on? this always happens to me

"Feathered" Mask
I am creating an effect in Flash that requires an object to be masked. To enhance the effect, I want the edges of the mask to be (using a Photoshop term here) "feathered" (soft - not hard edged). I know this is possible, but have been unsuccessful in creating it. I've tried creating a mask in Flash and softening the edges but that still gives me a hard edged mask upon playback. What program - ie Photoshop, Fireworks, Flash, etc. - would I create the mask in? What format would I export to? Is there something special that I need to do to import to Flash and maintain the integrity of the soft edges on playback? I've tried all formats that I can think of to no avail.

Sharp Edges
i'm having trouble getting my edges to look sharp in flash. i've drawn a small box, and when i go to preview it it looks blurry. i've got some boxes that were drawn within my background in fireworks, and those looks clean when my background is saved as a jpg and imported into flash. not sure what the problem is....anyone got any ideas??

blurry edged bitmaps

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to produce a picture, presumably a bitmap, where the edges sort of fade out, or go hazy. So the picture is static with a hazy border? It's quite popular with adverts at the mo? and is this poss. with flash 5.

i have a "m" that i converted to a shape and a line coming from the right-most "leg" of them "m" and extending down as an underline of the entire word. but the line isnt the exact width of the leg of the m, and its only a tiny little bitty bit of. is there a way to get them to connect, and mere together?

i am trying to make a script that will stop the movement of the picture when it reaches the edge of the window/movie. the picture is contained within it's own movie clip and has the following script attached to it..

NO BORDER Around Edges
How do I get my Flash movie, when published, to sit right in the LHS corner of the screen so that NO border appears around the edges?

In the "Publish Settings" I have already tried setting the HTML Aligment to 'left' and the Flash Aligment to 'left' and 'top'.
But this STILL leaves a big border around the whole swf movie.
