Recommendations On Flash Books
I am trying to learn making websites with Flash components or even a all-flash website.
I will appreciate any recommendations on books or free tutorial websites, although I would prefer books because I can read them in my spare time when I am away from the computer.
The books should be mainly about website making, but any other good books that explains the basics of Flash is also acceptable, since I am pretty new to Flash.

Free Flash Video Tutorials For Intermediate Level
I finaly finished making some video tutorials on doing some basic tasks in flash mx2004...Now they may be a little unprofessional seeing as how im not a young nimble nymph with a sexy voice hehe but an old geeky geekster..But they are free..and hosted on my webserver ..hope my bandwidth holds out ...
anyway I created 3 tutorials

1.Loading dynamic text from an external text file

2.Adding a scrollbar to said dynamic textbox

3.Creating a preloader for a movie clip..

Now these are not training videos for the advanced flash master so be nice..I made them for intermediate
users with basic skills in tweening and such ...
They are around 3 to 4 mbs hopefuly you have a highbandwidth connection 56kers will have to wait a few minuites...
I appreciate any constructive critiques ...
Seeing as how most places want to charge for these things I thought it would be nice to have some simple questions answered using videos without having to charge arms n legs for the stuff..They are very good quality presentations I used camtasia to make them...

Debugging Recommendations? (websites Or Books)
Does any one know of any website or books that have an extensive section on debugging? I am working in CS3 and most of the files that I'm being given have been written in CS2. I am an extreme beginner in Flash, so a reference that I can turn to for my multiple error messages or messages that appear in the pop boxes would be great.

I know CS3 has the Debugger, but even that is not the easiest to learn.

Medium To Advanced Skill Book Recommendations?
I just got the Sam's "Teach Yourself Flash MX in 24 Hours" book, and it's a pretty good starter book. Basic drawing, animation, sound, and some actionscript.
I think I'll be able to get the basics from it.

But VERY soon I'm going to need to be able to create a Web interface very much like what's here:

(If the link doesn't work, it's an interactive postcard creator using Flash to allow the user to select postcard size, alignment, insert text, etc. It then sends a copy of the completed postcard to the printers, and stores the card in the user's account.)

Best Way To Learn Flash... (ADVANCED LEVEL)
I am pretty good in photoshop, dreamweaver and php + mysql. But this is the challenge I am still fighting with. Flash is something that is just getting on my nerves. Like for example I am planning to make a intro in flash. I made cool graphics in Photoshop, imported them... make all those motion effects, the text bounces up etc..etc... But I am trying to make it more dynamic. Like, I want to implement PHP scripts in a flash website. Like, you click on a link called tutorials, and then it loads up the frame for the articles in it. And the articles are displayed over there from a database.... And then I saw some people making contact pages, or performing anykind of form processing with flash. How can I do all those stuffs? Can you give me a good web resource for flash... or perhaps a book? By the way, do you guys know a good site for sounds to use in flash?

I've been programming actionscript for some years now, but I'm self taught and I thank I sometimes could do thinks better and more professional if I had the knowled. I've been looking for some advanced actionscript 2.0 books, that is books that skip all the basics and does not start by explaining what a variable is.

Been looking at "Essential ActionScript 2.0" by Colin Moock but else from that I can't find any interesting.

ADVANCED LEVEL SCRIPT
I need help with a script. Heres the situation:
I want to be able to ALWAYS LOAD AN EXTERNAL SWF ONE LEVEL ABOVE EVERYTHING ELSE. The external swfs i am loading cover the entire main stage when loaded, so you can't see anything that was on the root level. I have 5 main buttons on my main swf, so I cannot assign each external swf its own level to be loaded into.

example: first.swf - load into _level1
second.swf - load into _level2
third.swf - load into _level3
THIS WILL NOT WORK. because if someone is in "second.swf" and they click on the "first.swf" button, it will load into _level1 which is behind the level they are on, and you will not see it.

So basicaly I want a script that will load a movie into _level1+i when i=1
so it always loads into a level higher than the current one. That way the swfs just keep stacking on each other.
The reason I want it like this is because for each external swf i have a preload scene that i want to layer ontop of what ever is currently on the stage.

example: On the stage you are looking at the loaded swf "first.swf".
you click the button "second". "second.swf" begins to load and you see the preload bar ontop of "first.swf" then when "second.swf" is completely loaded it covers the stage and it is all you see.
Therfore i cannot load second.swf into the same level as first.swf or else you will not see the preload bar of second.swf ontop of first.swf.

HOW CAN THIS BE DONE? i have looked everywhere.

Advanced Level Help Needed (drag/move/bounce)

This is a step in the right direction, but doesn't quite cut it. It should move in circles and a lot slower. All in all a lot smoother and infinite, not going back to the original x,y co-ordinates unless you put the mousepointer in the movie again.
The speed and infinite stuff should be doable, but the cos/sin stuff is something I have never actually done before.

When, in your opinion, does a person move on from being a newbie in flash to what would be considered, an intermediate developer?

A bit of an abstract question I know. Perhaps posting links to what you consider a newbie site and what you consider an intermediate site would be a good way of doing it.

Anyone any experience with the lynda.com flash mx2004 intermediate video?

and I think they mixed up bytesTotal with totalBytes and so on...
anyway I tried several things but( can't seem to get my stuff preloaded in the way they seem to do it...

Has anyone ever watched the entire "Intermediate Flash MX 2004" training cd-rom by lynda.com?

I have it, and am starting to watch it... I just want to make sure that it is teaching me the right way to make Flash websites.

One thing that is on my mind is that he is putting all AS code into a master.swf file... including loadVars type code to gather text to display to the visitor. With the structure of the website in the CD-ROM, wouldn't you want to have a loadvars inside each externally loaded swf files that gathers the text for use inside that specific swf file?

or is it best to have all that in the master swf file?

Some Guildelines To Learn Flash (intermediate)
Well I kind of know the basics of flash already and I got the concepts of movieclips and how they work, I have manage to create some easy tasks such clocks, countdowns and calculator..but then once in a while I do feel limited when creating my site as for scrollers also slideshow can be a real pain cause I dunno how else to do it beside you either use frames or load externally using loadMovieNum() method but then I need array with all the names in it and such...I was wondering if by making myself a class I would make my life easier with many sometime I feel limited to the components flash has because i dunno how else to do it I have noticed that actionscript's syntax is similar to java 2 syntax, many I would make the code in java 2 and well start to translate to flash (sometimes with a friend's help) is it really hard to develope your own classes and when u make them how do you implement them I'm really a noob about that my java 2 language might help me I guess at least for the logic, but I really dunno where to start the tutorials I find in actionscritp.org sometime they are too confusing or well they php and such..which I'm missing that too but I would like to learn more actionscript before moving on and learning php, and I read in another topic that xml is native so I might need that more that php so well some help here where do I start

I've got a load of MP3's that I'm importing into Flash on-the-fly. Trouble is, they play 3 times faster than they're supposed to when I import them at run-time! Flash Remoting With Amfphp - Intermediate Tutorial
Hi to everyone.

I red this (mostly perfect) tutorial here:

What I need to do is the following:
1) a user logs-in using a form in a Flash interface;
2) if username and password are right:
2a) there's a pdf in a directory;
2b) it is imported into another pdf;
2c) some personalized data is written into this new pdf;

-->3) this newly created pdf is served to the browser through a prompt:
that is, a prompt asks you if you want to download it.

I used two libraries to do what I need and they wonderfully works if I don't use AMFPHP. [http://www.fpdf.org/, http://fpdi.setasign.de/] One of the libraries has a more wonderful command thats simply says:

$pdf->Output('mydoc.pdf','D');

and sends the data to the browser.
How can I reach the same result with AMFPHP without having to use... getURL()?

Any Recommendations For A Flash CMS Tool?
I am looking at possible solutions to allow my client to edit the all flash site we are creating for them.

I have looked at several flash CMS tools, but cannot decide which would be best, if any, for this project.

It is a large site with many different pages, all of which will have different layouts/looks. I am leaning towards fcmsPro, just because it writes to a mySQL database, as opposed to XML.

Note:

1. it is mostly not interactive in nature.. like most games or interactive flash sites are.
2. contains mainly time line based animations... static in general.

Flash Video Streaming Service Recommendations
I am looking into a steaming service, and found several websites (including the macromedia certified services) but am looking for recommendations.

Also, as far as pricing goes of course everyone wants you to contact them but I don't want a lot of sales reps bugging me. (or my boss for that matter)

As far as looking for service for maybe a few sites (less than 10) with probably only one video per site (if even that many, right now we only have one client interested in streaming an 11 minute video on their site)

Does anyone have a ballpark figure on this range of pricing?

Flash Sound / File System / Book Recommendations?
I'm fairly new to flash and actionscripting but i'm very vested in programming. (VB.NET, ASP.NET, PHP, VB6, SQL, C++, C, Javascript, HTML, etc)

I'm need to create a sound player that loads files from a file system folder and then plays each file upon the user clicking "Play" or "Next Track" etc etc. The file needs to stream and preload so that its playing while downloading.

When the user loads the swf file I want it to look in a certain folder and load "x" amount of files. The number can vary, but they'd all be .mp3 format. This allow for easy management through an FTP client.

I'm looking for a good book on this so I can have some good reference.

And ideas?

Level 0 Loads A Movie Into Level 1 - Buttons On Level 0 Still Appear To Be Active Underneath
I am working on an interactive cd. My main movie plays in level 0 and clicking on an option loads the relevant movie into level 1.

The problem I have is that the main movie's buttons are still active underneath and if you click on the wrong place in the movie on level 1 it jumps to a new movie because of the button below.

Is there a way to somehow deactivate these while there is a movie playing above?

Scrolling Intermediate

Best Book For Intermediate?
Hiya, I am just getting back into flash and am looking for a book to help me out. (I know you can learn most of it from the internet and boards like this, but since my uni days, I find it useful to be able to flick through a book, it also gives me something practical to read in the toilet. Just to give you an idea of my level, I used to use flash a bit a few years ago (not much scripting) and then switched to director. At that time I also began doing a fair amount of java programming, so I have a fairly good idea about forming the graphical aspects (although not new aspects) and have a decent base for oo concepts and structure. I just want a book that will help me out with some of the more useful functions and actions, but isnt too basic.

I had been looking at =Macromedia Flash MX 2004 Actionscript: Training from the Source, or Macromedai flash MX 2004 Bible (as they tend to be pretty good).

and wondered if any of you had opinions, advice.

DuplicateMovieClip Help ... Anyone? (Intermediate)
Ok I might be taking the wrong approach here, but ...
I want to duplicate a movieclip that is nested within 2 other clips ex. movie1.movie2.mcToDuplicate

But the problem is that I don't want to duplicate the movie within movie2, I want to duplicate it to _root. Do I somehow need to change the target path after duplicating or is that possible ... help?

Flash MX AS Books?
hey all, I've been working as a straight designer for a little while, mostly graphics actually just starting to really get into flash...anyhow, I was wondering what the best book to learn actionscripting would be...I know some basics and I've got a pretty good understanding of C++ and some int. lvl java...so what would I want to look into to learn the real power of flash? I've seen the 5 books, but with the changes in MX I'd rather start there.
