Building A Web Site With Flash MX
Can anyone recommend any good books or tutorials on building a complete website using Flash MX? I've found a thousand & one books/tutorials on Flash MX/Action script & making objects follow the mouse around the screen etc.... Yawn! People are going to be sick of that kind of stuff before long aren't they

What I really want, After going through some basics with Sams: Learn Flash MX in 24 hours book, Is something that will demonstrate how to construct complete web sites with Flash MX. The only book I've found so far is the one on the link below but it's had appaling reviews & apparently contains lots of mistakes.

Building My First Flash Site.

first time here by the way,
well im building my first site in flash, ran into a problem tho...i put a stop action in one layer at frame 220. in another layer i put a go to and play (1)..evn though i have no clue about action scripting....therotetically layer 2 should keep looping and layer 1 should stop. problem is both keep looping. if anybody can help...would appreciate it.

Building A Flash Site
Hi there,

Can someone help me please? I have a master.swf file that has an empty movie clip called content to display other external swf files. It is an existing site with multiple scenes that I've have just broken down in smaller chunks (i.e. one swf file per menu item). I have a preloader.swf, home.swf, aboutus.swf etc.

In my master.swf, I am calling the preloader.swf in frame 1 and home.swf in frame 10. My home.swf doesn't load. How do I get it to load after the preloader finishes?

Also in my home.swf, I am not sure how to call the external swf files for each of the buttons. Any help on this too would be much appreciated. I am just getting used to AS2 with books and looking on the net to put all the pieces of the puzzle together.

Building First Site With Flash
I have been messing around with Flash for about a year now (off and on). I am working on building my first Flash site.

At first this didnt seem to difficult, but as I go along it is getting more and more complicating.

Flash Site Building
Hello everyone at Kirupa! I'm new here and I just wanted to say hello!

I'm making a flash site for my MySpace. Right now, I'm struggling with the actionscript stuff, I'm a complete newb at it. I'm learning though.

My question is, how would I make a site that will load external .sfw files into the movie with a working preloader for each .swf file.
As of now, I know how to load external movies; now I just need to add preloaders to them.
I went through the tutorials on this site and don't care for the results. I found one tutorial that came close to what I wanted but I didn't like how it added a transition. Can I just make each .swf have it's own on/off animations and have one preloader for all of them?

Here's an example:
I'll have the main movie play and stop where the content gets loaded.
The main page will load and I'll have buttons for the external .swf files.
If one of those buttons were clicked, then the current external .swf would play it's own out animation then have a preloader load the next .swf. Once that .swf is loaded, the preloader will fade out and the .swf will continue with it's in animation.
Catch my drift? I hope so, that's a lot of reading huh... I'll leave it at that.

Building A Site In Flash
OK, first time using flash and I built my whole site as one file 1.8 mb. As a swf on my hd it plays flawlessly, everything sound video buttons etc all work perfectly. When uploaded it worked perfectly for several weeks now it's taking so long to DL and play that I have to consider changing Hosts and rebuilding the whole thing as it seems down;loading 1.8mb is causing part of my network problems.
I'm trying to figure out how to do this using DW and Flash but the simplicity of building it in Flash and having everything linking so well in Flash is putting me off trying to do a half and half with DW. It's starting to feel messy.
Each scene represents a single 'page' in the site . Question is can I break each scene into seperate files ( SWFs) and still have them link through the buttons etc from SWF to SWF or scene to scene . That way you only have to wait for the homepage SWF ( scene ) to DL before browsing the rest of it.

I have to make a full flash site and I'm having trouble getting started. I think I just might be frustrated and that I'm making things seem a lot harder and more difficult than they really are.

Beginner Looking For Help Building A Flash Site
Hi,

I've been experimenting with Flash and have successfully created the basic layout of my site. However, I'm having problems loading the different pages of my site.

Basically, I've created different "movies" which act as the content of my site. I'm trying to insert these movies/content on my main site, where there is a blank space where the movie should go.

I'm trying to make it so that when you click on the nav button which says "THE TEAM", the movie theteam_mc would play in the blank space provided. I tried different AS but failed. Could anyone kind souls fix that up for me please?

Building A Flash Site - Any Advice :D
just startiong to build a flash based site for a uni assignment. within the site i need to include updatable news pages, image gallery's and some kind of e-learning games, the website is based upon a local museum.
im stuck weather to build the full site using flash or just conbine flash elements with dreamweaver...
if i build the site within flash am i best of loading each page in individually to save on file sizes and loading speeds or simply jump to different frames as the site might be quite big with plenty of content..
as for an updatable news section which is the best way of creating this ? if i do it in flash i would have just loaded in an external text file which can be added to..
main reason why im asking about which way to build it in is because i have been asked to consider usability and loading speeds :S

Building A Magazine Site Using Flash
I have a buddy interested in building a website for his toys for tots foundation magazine, he gave me a link to an example of how he wants the site to work:

I've never really built a flash site but from the looks of his example, this flash site takes a heck of a time to load and really isn't user friendly. Does anyone know of any magazine websites which uses flash in a much more accesible manner? I've suggested to him to have us use javascript/ajax on the site but I'd like to know if any of you can suggest a magazine site with a much better use of flash.

ok, to the serious stuff...i am a serious golf gti fan, and consequently, i am a memeber of one of the UK's best gti fan based forums. Now, within that forum i have posted a few examples of my graphic design work, and yesterday i recieved an email from the chairman of the board telling me that he'd like me to redesign his main site (which is pretty **** looking atm, see http://elite1000.co.uk now, in terms of desing, i'm ok, i know exactly what i want to do with his site (which is pretty much working around the same sections he already has existing) but, he would llike me to design and possibly maintain the site with regular updates in mind. so heres the question : is it, and how is it, possible to design a flash site, where you can update text and pictures (jpegs) easily? like do you guys refere to it as being dynamic?

theres no money in this whatsoever for me, and i really want to do it out fo pure enthusiasm, and don't want to let him down - only thing is, i just need some help on how to create a site that i can update pretty frequently without having too much bother

anywho, im having trouble on the full flash site tutorial.
ive re reaed it lots of times now, and
well ill just tell you my problem.
i made the front page of my site.
then i opend a new fla. file and made the next page (comics)
i then exported that with the name comics (obviously).
then in the front page fla. i made a button to take you to the 'comics' page.
i put this code into the button

on (release) {
_root.contents.loadMovie("comics.swf");
}

then i published previewd it in HTML ,clicked the button for the comics page, and it didnt work.

so this is what i dont understand, in the file you download with the tutorial, if u look in it, the other pages of the site arent in that file, each page has been exported and isnt connected to the home page.
i know that when you click a button, it loads the page (in swf. form) into a movie clip on the main site....does this make sense?

Building A Ecommerse Based Flash Site
Hi guys!

Looking for some advice on how to build a flash based gallery which will show a scrolling image of a series of products which will be displayed by accessing a series of catagories via a navigation bar. It is envisaged that an ecommerse based element will be integrated in order purchase these products. The site needs to be built in Flash as there are a number of interactive and animated features which can only be achieved using flash. I would imaging the product details and images need to be stored in a database which flash will call upon. Can anyone tell me what other software I should consider to build the site from a developer/programming perspective. It has been mentioned to me to consider XML and actionscript, what about the integration of ecommerse? Hope this makes sense.

Really appreciate any advice and go easy cos Im a designer and not a developer! Need to know what kind of skillset my developer needs to have in order to build the site.

I am building my first big site in Flash.

As I add more and more content and the 'pages' become more complex with subnavigations and forms, I wonder if my approach to building pages - which is to create a scene for each page - is flawed.

So I'd like to ask the experts:
when you build a site do you make a new scene for each page or do you link from swf file to swf file?

-Laying out of flash content in a fullscreen flash site -Allow scrolling of flash content, when the browser window is smaller then the minimum area required to display the flash content.

Good Morning, AS3 Help Needed For Building My Own Site In Flash
Good morning to all,
I am creating a site in Flash, I am using AS3 to create a site that stops/starts the movie on my home page and I have a series of buttons that play a head (or are supposed to) to the a frame for each additional page. Do I need A.S. for each button as well? I didn't think I did. The script below is the first one in the layer titled actions, this I thought is supposed to stop/start the movie at the beginning and the button abt_mgn_btn is supposed to bring it to frame 10 to play my about page. ?? at my frame number 10 should I put the stop(); script there as well? And at every frame break for the next pages? I am hopelessly in need of guidance. Thank you to anyone helping me out.

Using AS2- Building A Flash Site- Two Buttons Work The Rest Dont?

Building A Flash Web Site: Best Build Method To Adopt For Efficiency?
I've got a fair bit of experience in working with flash, however I've always used it more in the design field as opposed to the operative field. This is my current method of having multiple pages:

- Main .swf with design
- Menu system in main .swf calls sub .swf files using loadMovieNum
- When user changes page TellTarget used to start out transition in current sub swf file and then once again use loadMovieNum to load the new sub swf file in.

Now this method seems fairly common, and it does serve it's purpose for a small personal site with a couple of pages. What happens if you want to take it to the next stage? I.e. where you are looking at 30-100 pages, imagine if I wanted to change the out transition on a page, I'd have to go and re-edit all those sub swf files.

I am positive there are more efficient methods available and I am determined to learn them and utilise them, any help/advice would be appreciated.

Newbie Needing Some Site Building Guidance - How To Structure A Site?
I need a little help - I am designing an art portfolio in Flash, and so I need it to be a site that has a few different pages that are linked between each other - you know, common sense. I really have no idea how to go about structuring that. I've been doing well at animations and buttons and ActionScript and all kinds of things in Flash, but I just don't understand how to make several pages that are part of the same document. Do you use scenes, or different "projects" within the document, or what? And then how do you link to them - just like it was any other URL?

Site Building?
Hi all,

Im curious as to know if this site Im building is a good way to go about it.

On this site,the pages are in different scenes all within the same swf file...the doors open...a button is clicked setting a variable name (e.g. About button sets variable to "about") and the scene plays on (doors close)...then last frame is an 'else if' scenario reading the variable set and therefore jumping to the right scene for the right page button clicked.

My question is...is this a good way to do it?...one whole swf could be a biggie to load....can I put preloaders before each scene?...should I be using the 'load movie' action instead for each page?..in which case, how do I get the buttons to know which page is open and which to load next after an outro of the page before has played?....should each page be a movie clip that loads when the buttons are clicked?

Basically whats the 'usual' way of building a flash site?

How are sites like http://www.estudio.com built?

Help Building A Site (I'm New At This)
I was wondering if any of you experts can help me.

I am building a small site for my soccer team. It will be relatively simple with player pics & info and general team info and some links.

I have already made an intro movie (using some animations and music from flashkit).

Now HERE IS THE PROBLEM.

Unfortunately, I can't find the spare time to do this from scratch, and I do not know Flash well enough to be able to do it in the first place. What I am looking for is somewhere where I can download a FREE template and maybe edit it (change graphics etc...) and make it work for my particular site.

If anyone knows where I can find a template with a menu bar (preferably horizontal, but I'm not picky), and prehaps with some nice glide over or button click effects incorporated in it, I would really appreciate a link or two.

I would like the site to be an entirely in Flash, with the "frames" popping up within the "movie" once a button on the main menu is clicked (i.e. when "Player Bio" is clicked, it would load a pic with some text, which I will edit into the template).

So far, everywhere I've looked has only had templates for sale.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with something i see on all sites that i vist. So I'm thinking it cant be to hard to understand but then agian :P.

[CS3] Site Building Help
Hey guys I wonder if someone can help me. I've been using swish for some years now and felt it was time I started using Flash so I thought I'd make a simple website for a online community. Trying to learn this on the fly, I find trial and error mixed in with the experience of others allows me to learn faster.

Anyway, I've essentially created 4 layers in Photoshop that I wanted to use as the base of the design.

The 4 elements

-background
-logo
-menu panel - the site navigation
-content panel - where page content would be displayed.

I've imported each object created and imported the images to "stage". I'm assuming the library lets me view everything within the document that's been important weather its displayed on the screen or not?

Next after some fiddling around I found the transition effect, specifically the ability to make my layers "fade in".

I've given the background 15 frames. Then the logo (with some text) fade in, followed by the menu and content panel 1 frame after each other. Which gives a nice flowing transition from left to right of the screen.

I've included a image to help demonstrate what I mean, here.

Now here's the bit I'm a bit puzzled by and where to go from here. What I now want to do is have the menu text pop up cascading down the menu panel with the fade in transition. So for example the text home, news, forums etc will pop up that i can convert to buttons.

Now, my logic would have me create a new layer with all the text needed for the menu/buttons. But if I did that how could I cascade the test through the fade in if its on the same layer?

I've briefly read into movie clips? Could I save what's currently done as a movie clip? Then create a new movie clip for the menu cascade? Or would it be easier to create a layer folder? Separating the "menu intro" to the text. I'd imagine that would allow me to replicate what I've done so far but with the text. i.e. a new layer for each button wanted with the transition effect?

Building My Site
Hi all,

I have a website that I've designed for myself that I'm in need of getting programmed. I have a basic understanding of basic flash, however, I don't know where to start, etc. when it comes to what I need to do. I'm a designer and my flash development skills aren't really well crafted since I don't use the program often.

I found this site which is a great example of what I need to accomplish, in terms of functionality:

Although my design isn't the same, the sliding/scrolling effect with the cursor and by using the navigation at the bottom is very similar to what i'm trying to achieve.

I can't find any good online help tutorials to assist me and any other board I post on says "I can't do it because it's too complex" which I'm not saying isn't true. I'm looking at taking this step by step, with anticipation to have this up within the next month.

On that note, if you can offer any links to good lessons relating to this sort of build I'd be most appreciated. Furthermore, if you're interested in assisting me along in this project, let me know what that would involve and/or what design trade offs would be a possibility in return for your help.

Building Portfolio Site
hello kids,

i am trying to create a full portfolio site in flash. i have a bunch of flash movies that i have made that i want to load into my main movie. the problem is, is that all the other movies have a different frame rate than my main movie. i have tried to use setInterval to force a frame rate on the loaded clip, but because i'm using heavy AS in them it messes up the playback.

what would be the best way to tackle this project? turn the swfs into flv files somehow? screen capture the swf files and convert to flv? is there a better way to load external swfs and maintain the original frame rate?

this is driving my insane, please help meeee

Building A Search On My Site
Hey how's it going? I downloaded a template and it has a flash header and in that header there is a search feature. I want to be able to use that feature. I tried using coffee cup and it indexed the site but it also generated a swf that it wanted me to use. Building First Site, HELP Required
I am building my first ever site in flash using actionscript, and I am having some difficulty understanding how to code a specific part of the site. The problem I am having say for instance i was in the home section of my site, and i wanted to view the contacts page. I click on the contacts button, and the page arrives as it should. However, i just dont know how to address the current page to remove it. Obviously the current page could be any number of pages. And when i click on a menu button i want the "current page" to be removed for the new page to take its place.

I dont want the code written for me, so if you could explain this to me or point me in the right direction of a good tutorial explaining the above, it would be much appreciated.

Site Building Question
I recent attended a class on Flash. They took us through building a website using "forms". I asked if this was common practice to build a website. The instructors said it was. I have read through a few books on flash, and none of them mention using "forms" to build a site. I like the way forms work, and it seems like a nice way to do a site, but, I was just looking here to see what the general feeling is toward them, and some pro's and con's.

Building A Site With External Swf's
Hi there,

I am building this site and each page is it's own swf file.
Why is it that everytime I click on a button in my nav bar that the site flashes back to the index page and then to the page I have selected???

OR, if I am on the index page and I click a nav bar button, the preloader for that button loads in the index page??

How can I solve this? I am sure it's something simple, but it's driving me NUTS!

Building Site Problem

I'm dying to learn AS3. I've got the ActionScript 3.0 cookbook and I'm gonna pick up Essential AS3 (Essential AS2 was my bible).

The best way for me to learn is with a practical application though. I'd like to build a site in AS3 and I'm just wondering what the best practice for this is. Does anyone have examples of a site with some basic section sections setup in AS3?

I'm wondering if I should build the interface / animations in flash and then just load in classes for navigation, loading sections, deep linking, etc...

Really not sure how to structure it so any help is appreciated

Help Stuck Building Site
im building a site in photoshop 7...it has a rectangular menu bar that has an arrow on it that will be clickable to bring the menu down/back up...the arrow will also have a mouseover...

when the menu comes down, there are text objects that will need to be made links...which will also bring the menu up when clicked and will open the new page in the frame below the menu...

my problem is getting all of this in a flash project and making it work....please refer to the two images below

Samsung Site - Building Something Similar
Hi everyone

I was browsing the for flash sites and came across this samsung site

I wanted to ask the members of this forum if they would be willing to help me build something similar to this step by step?

Ofcourse not as complicated - I just want to learn basically how the resize functions and moving around the window functions work as well as co-ordinating animations between the 2 seperate pages.

Question On Building A Full Site
I was wondering if any one can tell me how to get the browser on a flash site to fit the site like for example in the
kirupa full sit check out the site example to see what I mean, I'm sure its java or some other program lang that I don't know. I hope someone can prove me wrong

Building 'How To Use This Site' Demo For Hotel
Building 'How to use this site' demo for hotel booking company, very similar to the one on expedia:

The problem i'm having is that my screenshots are huge. I can get them down to about 80k (745x494) & i will be using about 5 of them.

Is this too big or do i just make each a separate movie & have them individually load as the previous movie is playing? It still seems like it would take to long to load.

Also what is the best way to do the fading transition?

Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

My flash background: I will always consider myself a newbie no matter how much I learn since I can always learn more. I have a good grasp on basics, animation, tweens, all that stuff. And also I can do some simple action scripting - nothing fancy though.
