Calling All Serious Flashers
You would have all heard of java and quicktime -

Some may have heard of qtvr or virtual tours.

Well at the moment in the virtual tour world there is a big problem with the amount of people who have these plughins to view the software.

Quicktime is the best quality eg here

Java has more % coverage but its old fashioned and not so great. eg.here

Now this is where you come in - Flash on the otherhand is great - interactive and good % coverage. It can cope with sliding virtual tours ok (eg a pic going left and right)

But not a sperical vitrual tour - the best is here Using a circular masking technique.

Right you lot! If any one out there can do better than this I would be very greatfull!!

The idea - if i can explain - I imagine the best way is to create a cube with the view in the middle - and on this cube add a picture to each side - 4 around the sides and 1 top and one bottom. - as you move the mouse like the other tours the cube will revolve and as the pictures are already made to fit - you won't see the edges. - here are some picture to play with ---

I realise its hard to explain so shoot with questions - I would love to know "can it be done properly???"

update - just had a look at this box by flashloaded - here

This shows it can be done - the view should be inside the box though and the cube should be the same dimensions. - (look at the picture render)

I'm setting up a record player for a friends website, and I cant seem to figure out how to code the buttons so that they do what I need them to do. There's 3 play buttons (one for each song) and 1 stop button. I have 2 movieclips for the record players arm, armswing, and armout. I want to press play on the first button and have it load armswing to give the effect of putting the needle on the record and pressing stop unloads armswing, and loads armout takeing the needle off. I have that so far, the thing is, if I go straight from the first button to the second or third without pressing stop, the mc armswing is loaded again and the neddle comes off the record then goes back on. Is there a way useing if statements to make it not load that movie again if its already loaded and to load it if its not?????

I'm having major problems with some of my links. The links have been targeted as _blank, however quite a few of them have been opening dual windows instead of one. I have re-read, re-done, and posted a few "help me's" on flashkit with no luck, still these damn $%%#$# dual windows.

How Do I Do This Flashers................?
OK heres the problem,

i am trying to make a simple game where there are a selection of tiles which turn over to reveal part of a photo if the 2 numbers inside them add up to the same value...

for example, if the user click on the tile with "2+2" in it, that tile's outline becomes a different colour (to show it has been highlighted)- if the user then clicks on the a tile which has "3+1" in it, then both tiles flip over to reveal part of a photo..(because the insides of both tiles adds up to 4...)

WHAT WOULD BE THE BEST WAY FOR ME TO GO ABOUT THIS ?????

I want to develop a way to display a gallary of images (.JPG's) using FLASH MX.

This so called gallery would be dynamic in the sense that the site owner could use my Cold Fusion form to tell my database where theses images are located on the server. ( ie. a path http://www.mysite/images/gallery.myimage.jpg )

Flash would load a variable ( ie. my coldFusion page that had some sort of method to dynamically pic up this image and display them------------- THIS IS WHERE YOU GURU's come INTO PLAY !!

Well please let me know if you have any suggestions / better ways to accomplish this ........

Hello..I am going to make a photograhy website and I would like some of your creative input. I am looking for a "Clean, Classy, Creative" masking effect to display the portfolio pics. I M MAKING A FULL FLASH SITE AND well i got the full flash thingie and i have converted everything perfectly into external swf's and bla bla. But when i preview it as i click on the link the swf appears with only text on the same page in which the link is present. The text just apears on the very own page ??

When I use loadVariablesNum ("banner.txt", 0);
to load a variable from banner.txt called TEXT i only get a maximum length of 20 characters on the first play of the movie... but when it loops i get it's full length...

How can this be fixed?

For Advanced Flashers, Loadvar Split Up?
Hi everyone,

I have a variable #number# from a cfml file, and flash loads the var into the mainmovie.
When the #number# var has been loaded it generates a phone number from the cfm file, the max is 14 numbers.

my question is, is it possible to split up the variable into numbers and play a little wav file for each number

so if 3553678376 is loaded from the cfml file, I want to hear 3.wav, 5.wav, 5.wav etc. etc.

I got the var loaded from the cfml file, but I don't know how to play it.

Big Sizing Problem, Challenge To All Flashers
Here is the problem.

When I go into "Publish Settings" then to the "HTML" tag and change the "Dimensions" box to "Percent". Then change the Width and Height to 100 percent. Problems happen.

What this should do is make my stage how ever big the user's browser is. This works fine. The problems happens when one of my MC goes off the stage. The MC still appears.

When I have the "Dimensions" set to "Pixels" and the Width and Height set to 720x720 my MC don't appear when they go off the stage.

Does anyone know why this happens and a way to fix it or is this an error in Flash MX?

Physics Test To The Xpert Flashers
See if u can come up with an engine to this:

Have a car (2d, profile) be able to drive along a screen (also 2d, profile, like mario bros)... if tha car runs into a ramp, it drives up the ramp... and flies off the end... and it has to be as realistic as possible... which means real life physics, with springs in the wheels and everything...

Is this possible? And i know it would probably be hard as hell to do... but i'd like to see it done, so, anyone up for the challenge?

oh, and the cars is of course moved by keypresses from the player

Online Flash Compressor For Fellow Flashers
Hello everybody.

I'm testing a curious tool at the moment and would like to hear opinions from you, fellow flashers. Basically, it's an online SWF file compressor. It will scan a website for Flash 3,4,5 SWF files and convert them into compressed Flash 6 format. Since the penetration of the Flash Player 6 is high enough already, I decided to compress old SWF files made with previous Flash versions without buying commercial optimizers. The tool shaved 30% off of SWF v5 files on average.
Will other flashers be interested in such a tool? We have some free bandwidth and CPU resources on our server and I'm gonna launch it as a free service. What do you think?

Morning Flashers. Im Having A Problem Getting An External Text File To Do What I Want
Ive not used the forum before, but you do seem like a helpful bunch!

here is the scenario i am trying to create : the web page has a crystal ball, inside the crystal ball, text fades in and out saying something. This is fine, its just calling an external text file, and it works.

Underneath the ball is a dynamic text field which when typed into, will preview what was written in the crystal ball. I figgered the best way to do this would be for the dynamic text to write to an external text file which the movie would call and then preview in the ball. I dont want the file to become part of the text file that the movie uses as its source, but to a seperate one so that I can choose what people can enter as text for the ball to display.

make sense? any help would be really really appreciated as i am tired of beating my non scripting brain in over it.

Just posted here a week or so back a question on how downloads for Ringtones etc work. The answer is ..download ringtone to hard drive.hook them into your mobile if you

a.have a cable to connect to your mobile
b.have some type of Infra red device
c.use bluetooth if you have that.

d.if you want a download page that deals with Diff mobile phones etc
you need coding or a programm etc that might come from your phone utility
company or elsewhere.- or you hook into their service.

Im not sure how many flashers are in this partic forum, 300,000 - 500,000 and ill bet one of you knew the mobile phone procedures for such... No one replied so I called the local Computer technician who gave me the information. That was 30 cents and all over in 6minutes.

While im a newbie to flash somewhat..these are the things I can help flashers with

1.Strategy and copy platforms for web sites-Nothing happens before the copy is written - Im a former retired Senior Writer/Creative Director for 2 of the worlds top 5 Ad Agencies- I can tell you FREE what works and what you need to do to a web site to get it right. In a world where the true comercialzation of the web is speeding up faster- Their are plenty of sites on the web that if I were the client Id ask for my money back.

2Ive animated more than 40 hours of series animation (with a team)
they start the same way- the Story/the Copy and I've Edited more than 30 scripts if you want to know what story structure is about ill tell you FREE!
this is due to the collection of Flash shorts 2D and other 3D stuff on the net which dont have story and make no sense whatsoever and are ghastly IMO.

3. A forum appears to me to be a place where a person can get answers to questions. Feel free to ask questions on the subejcts I know that can help you and your web sites. Im not in competition with anyone, because I can give you tools ...in all creative applications you still have to think of or create the concept in which the tools when applied will have to work...and concept is something you alone create.

Calling A Function, External To The Calling Class

So there's a class, that needs to call/access an external function.
'External' (imho) in this case would be any function, declared outside of the class.
How is it possible to:
1) call a function declared in the main timeline.
2) call a function in another class (i suppose, the only way of doing it is by importing the class having this function into the calling class?)

The "best" Flashers Are Stumped.
It's a simple answer, but no one knows.

Why does the following happen?

On a button, or from the _root timeline... This does NOT work:

on (release) {
_root.gotoAndStop(_level0.theVariable);
trace(_level0.theVariable);
}
(NOTE: trace statement equates to 1G.)

This DOES work:
on (release) {
_root.gotoAndStop("1G");
}

It really is a simple answer. How would YOU answer?

Sorry for the non descriptive title, I didn't know what to really say.
I'm a cold fusion'er, who has been working with the the product almost since birth. Now that MM and Allaire have merged and the MX product line has came about I'm working my way into the flash side of things as well.
I'm under the assumption there are a few flash designers who would like to harness the cold fusion side of things and work into the model that is before us.

So basically is there any flash designers that would like to work side by side with me, I can teach and aide with cf, and possibly learn some flash/actionscript?.

Not looking for the code written for me, or vise versa, just looking in email/website partnerships to learn the two languages together and teach each other our passion of code.

Calling A MC From Another MC
Hi!

My main movieclip, "main", is on top of the hierarchy.

Under "main" comes the "modul" and "text" movieclips.

Under "text" comes "info" MC.

Inside "modul" I've got a button, and when the button is pushed I want flash to play a section in "info".

I try this in the buttons actionsscript (text-mc is duplicated and the curr_mod variable has the correct value):

tellTarget (eval("_root.main.text"+curr_mod+ ".info")) {
gotoAndPlay ("show");
}

But NOOOOOOO, that doesnt work, whats wrong, and how should i call the show-section in info?

Ok, I made the popup window, set it to do what I want. (this is its own movie clip). Here is the thing, how do I call it. I need another movie clip to call this up and display this MC. I could put the MC on the main time line and make the first frame blank and then set a seperite MC to tell it to goto secound frame, but becuase of the amount of MC's I'll be doing this too, I feel it could cause problems. So the question is, how do I call an MC onto the stage. I'm going to make the MC, it won't be part of anything till its called. How do I make it happen.

i expoted my movie as a swf and i have a button that calls to load the movie but flash looks for the movie in the wrong place.... bothe the main flash movie and the movie that it calls to play are both saved in the sam directory..anybody know whats going on..

I'm using flash 5 with several different scenes, I'm starting with one scene and when it goes to the next scene i'm calling with "get url" an asp scipt. Here is what i want to do. i want to be able to display the asp and then have it return to flash to display the rest of the scenes. And I want all of this without modifing asp to call flash.

Calling Up A .swf
I want to be able to click a button in my movie to view another .swf that I have made. When I try it, it either replaces the current movie or launches it in a browser. I want it to play on a certain spot or screen on the current movie.

I have drawn out a small TV set and when I click a chanel (button) I want the .swf to appear in that spot.

I searched everywhere and can't find an answer.

How do I call a movie clip from a button. I've looked everywhere for a tutorial.

I understand how to call a .swf movie clip from when someone clicks a button, but I'm trying to call a movie clip that's in my library.

I'm not sure if what I'm trying to do is the correct way to do it though.

What I'm trying to do is, I have three main boxes in one .swf and I want to click a photo in one of these boxes and have some content load in the box next to it.

I tried just having a .swf load in that box and when i click on the photo using

on (release) {
_root.contents.loadMovie
("photos03.swf");
}

the photos03.swf will load in the correct box, however the photo I clicked disappears because it isn't in the photos03.swf movie clip.

Is there a way to do what I'm trying to do except for copying and pasting all the same content/keyframes from the "clicking photos" .swf to the photos03.swf ?

If so how?
Is this what _parent, etc. actionscript is used for?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

[F8] MC Calling Another MC?
I have 2 MCs on my main timeline. One is a control panel that activates with a visible button. On rollOver it displays like a champ, no issue there.

Contained within that control panel is a button i'd like to use to call my other MC which are audio controls, as i want them hidden until use.

My question is, can I script it so that the "audio button" on the first MC calls the audio control panel even if the audio button is contained in another MC?
