Who Can Recommend A Good Book?
Thanks for stopping in, I need a book on Flash MX.

What I do:
I am not new at this. I am more of a developper than a designer. I am fluent with OOP (and event-driven OOP), I understand all of the features of Flash 5. I am able to get around in the MX development environment.

What I want:
Someting that details the new features of Flash MX (components, listeners...). And if possible, something that also details the OOP approach to ActionScript.

What I don't want:
Not really interested in the drawing features... and a lot less in the "environment" (window docking, etc...).

Hopefully, some of you guys have already waded through most of the available books out there, and could lead me in the right direction.

Recommend A Good Actionscript Book
Hello Flash Kit Community.

I just recently started learning Flash about a month ago. I've been using a book to learn, however it focuses mainly on animation techniques and only has the basics of actionscripting. I am almost done with the book and would like to know what a good book for learning actionscript 2.0 would be. I would prefer a newb friendly one that will take me from basics to advanced actionscripting.

BTW, I dislike using online tutorials. I'd rather learn from a book. For some reason it's just easier that way for me.

Can Anyone Recommend A Good Flash Book?
I've finished reading "SAMS Teach Yourself Macromedia Flash MX" (even though I'm using Studio 8 but I've coped ok) by Phillip Kerman, and I was hoping that after I finished it, I'd be able to produce a finished website without much fuss.

Unfortunately, that's not the case. I know the basics of Flash, drawing, animation, timeline, layers etc and how to use these relatively simply tools to create a reasonably good looking, albeit simple movie.

The book itself was a big disappointment, written in a really tedious way and frankly I feel I want to know so much more but I wasted £20 on it.

It might just be me but I still lack the ability to create more than a simple non-linear movie. I have to create a website for my company before the end of March. I'm really frustrated at the moment, I've just tried to create 4 sample "proof of concepts" so the boss can choose, but I can't even do that at the moment! It took me an hour to make a scrolling movieclip for example, and that was following a tutorial on Flashkit http://www.flashkit.com/tutorials/Ac...1174/index.php

You might be thinking "well can't he just use these tutorials and use those skills to create something himself", but I dont know where I'm supposed to start! I have plans, storyboard, and scribbled diagrams of the website, and I dont even know where to begin in making it!

If someone can recommend me a book that'll be more helpful, or even just offer some friendly advice (I'm sure lots of people might have started out like me), I'd be really grateful.

Can You Recommend Any Good Beginner Courses In The Bay Area?

I am the newest newbie to Flash.

I've opened the program once or twice, but thats about it... I plan on doing my "homework" first: completing the beginner lesson & online tutorial, playing around with the software, & reading up in online discussions before I start classes.

My questions are:

1. What are the best courses in the SF Bay Area? Preferably one which offers advanced levels as well. Silicon Valley area is best.

2. Do you recommend regular courses vs. online?

* I am currently looking at the UC Santa Cruz Extension Program in Cupertino. If you've taken it or heard of it, please let me know your thoughts

3. What is the best, easy-to-understand comprehensive beginner guide book to Flash? I've seen Colin Moocks posted several times.

Recommend A Good "starting Out" Flash Creation Program?
I am about ready to start out.. I've never created a flash object in my life, and I need to modify one this weekend.

It's just a simple modification (I think), that will involve changing the color of a flashing button.

Can anyone recommend a decent "flash editor" to do this work? I prefer as low cost as possible, since I'll only really use it to make very simply modifications to existing flash files. (Like the change I described.)

Good HTML Editor For Flash TXT Files?
I've been using GoLive to export .txt files to load into dynamic text fields in Flash MX. It doesn't actually have an option to save text files, I just manually put the .txt extension and it works.. sort of.

I am finding it a little sloppy are in need of manual editing to get to display properly in Flash MX. Anyone know of a better editor for doing this?

Text File Editor For Flash
Hi there,

I am looking for a good way to update text files (html formatted) to be read in Flash. I managed to find a script a long time ago, but the website it came from is gone and apparently so is the author. The actual script works fine except it adds backslashes all over the place. That and it doesn't have a WYSIWYG editor. The scripts readme file says that it can be altered to read html but I wouldn't know where to start with that one. All I essentially need at this point is to have a PHP script either I or my clients can log into and change the content on their site. Whether that is just plain text or not at this point doesn't really matter.

If anyone would like to see the script I found, just ask.

I sure hope someone can help. I've posted about this before and didn't get anywhere...

ActionScript File Editor Vs Actions Panel
Is anyone else just supremely annoyed they did this this way? By this I mean having the editing of an actionscript file take up the work area and ghost out the actionscript editor. If you're working back and forth between fla and as, you're jumping back and forth between two separate windows that are potentially the same thing. With one monitor, this is a pain in the arse too because you have to keep ditching and reviving the actionscript panel whenever you switch.... and yet, its the SAME thing as the actionscript editor in the workspace :mad:

luckily the actionscript editor allows export. So, as an alternative, create an simple shape movieclip in your library (no linkage) and write scripts there to export out .as files with. Keep an instance on the screen handy in areas you are programming in so you can double click it to access your scripts. Just be sure you delete all instances before testing or publishing.

Good Size File For Web?

What size flash file would you recommend is a good size for the web??

I realize theirs sevral variables, who are your clients going to be, how extensive is the site etc. But for a full flash site, what kind of file size should i be shooting for, just for the interface and a few images. I want to be selfish and use photoshop to creat the effects instead of spending five more minutes in flash, aka put more bitmaps in the GUI

GOOD Preloader In The Same Movie File?
I've been using oldnewbie's preloader, and it works fine, its just that it's a pain to have to make two files for every movie!

Anyone know of a good preloader for large files (2.5 mb)?

I tried my own and the percent loaded didn't show up until the movie was 68% loaded!

I am new to actionscript and am currently using the following script to load 25 images into a movieclip container ("lgpicture") from an external .xml file. The problem is that each image loads individually and there is a long pause between viewing each image for the first time. Instead I would like, if possible, to use a preloader that will load all images at once, before any image is viewed with a percentage bar or something like that. I am unfortunately unable to compromise on the image size (some well over 500K) but one long pause in the beginning is much more favorable than pausing between each image. I would really appreciate any help I can get!!!

Want To Learn Flash From A Good .fla File
Where can I find a good example flash animation from which to learn. I learn best from examples. I think if I can see how a flash animation looks once it's build already, it will help me to learn how to create my own. Anyone know of a website that offers free downloads of sample .fla files?

Show Text Created In Javascript Text Editor And Saved In Xml File
Hi all

I am currently investigating how to show text in flash that is created using a javascript text editor in a CMS. The text is imported from an XML file and you can see an example of the data below.

My problem is that the current version of the text display component I've created for flash has no room for "weird" symbols. This means that a lot of characters are not displayed and somtimes only half the content is displayed.
Preferably, the component should be as good at showing html content as if ws displayed on a normal html webpage.

I also want to be able to load images into the text component. They should be specified in the XML code as simple <img> tags.

Do you have a good idea of a solution or do you know a super solution already made? Preferably a solution that can be used for commercial purposes.

Hello,

Does anyone know the best way to extract jpegs or gifs from a flash file? -- I just need to get the still frames out of the fla. or swf. file, so I can then make a storyboard in photoshop...

I know this is probably a very straightforward thing, I've tried going through 'publish settings' selecting both jpeg and gif, but the resulting jpegs and gifs are either completely black or all pixelated and off-centre. I have no idea why it's doing this. It is a large file with any movie clips within movie clips...

When you open the site, there's a really sweet slideshow. I've been able to replicate the sliding action and I can click on each image to take me to a new URL, but I can't get it to automatically rotate on it's own. The numbers are fine, but I'd also like to add next/prev buttons.

Like I said, I got it scrolling, I just don't know how they're controlling theirs. I think I'm just doing it all wrong. How would you go about doing it? TIA!
