Setting State Of Checkbox Smart Clip
Hello,

This is my first attempt at working with smartclips, so I apologize for any blatant ignorance. I am trying to set the state of the flash provided checkbox smartclip depending on the value of a variable that is loaded in the very beginning. I'm having trouble figuring out how to reference the clip to set it's state - I have a action keyframe at the beginning of the movie checking the value of my variable, and then trying to set the state accordingly, but I'm obviously off.

if (variable == "yes") {
checkbox1.setState(true);
}

Any suggestions or pointers to a tutorial would be greatly appreciated. I found a basic smartclip tutorial, but it doesn't say anything about manipulating their properites dynamically.

Embedding Smart Clips In Movie Clips Causes Crashes...?
i noticed that if you use more than one of those drop-down menu smart clip in the common library, you can't see all the choices...

e.g.
drop in one instance
then another directly below it.
publish the movie
select the third or fourth choice from the second drop-down
let go so that your choice is selected
now re-select the second drop-down menu...
the other choices are hidden by the menu above it.

this is also the case if you try the procedure in reverse...
i.e. if the second instance is on a higher z-plane, the choices in the first will be hidden.

it seemed logical to drop the smart clip into a movie clip then use mc.swapDepth to set the z-index

got swapDepth working perfectly

but as soon as you put an instance of the smart clip into a movie clip, flash (5 for mac, PPC, OS 9.1, g4 466, 384MB) crashes as soon as you try to publish/export/test movie.

i tried it in a button as well... same thing

i've been trying to rebuild the menu in a normal movie clip form but it seems like more pain than it's probably worth...

any suggestions?

is it possible to modify the code of a Smart Clip in the learning interactions section. what i mean, to ask, can we have an access to the fla file of the swf loaded as an UI in the Smart Clips.

Movie Clips, Vs. Smart Clips Vs My Brain
I am having a difficult time trying to wrap my head around the MC process and its usefulness. I know they are very beneficial, make things easier, file sizes smaller etc. but I can't seem to make logic mesh with my brain cells.

Does anyone have a good way of explaining the "How to's" and "Why for's" of Movie Clip's????

Also, what is the difference between a Movie clip and a Smart clip?? (The latter I have the same questions about as well.)

Flash has built in smart clips from the common libraries, on of the clips is a drop down box, very nice, and would be very useful, hower I am failing time and time again to draw information as to what the user has selected from the menu, does anyone know how to determine what they have selected?

Smart Clips
I have a problem... I have a smart clip that can have code added to it and then scrolls right or left depending on where the mouse is. It also gets longer as you add more choices... which is great. The problem is that even if the mouse is off of it, it continues to read the mouse and scroll right or left. I'm wondering if anyone knows how to prevent this from happening.

Please Help With Smart Clips
I am working with a total web site built in Flash. I wanted to add 2 differant sound clips to be controlled by a movie clip. There is the one default sound clip to be loaded( it is a swf with on a sound file on it loaded to level 50) with the exception of when entering one page. On that one differant page (actually a swf loaded to target) there will play a differant sound (actually a swf with only the sound file on it loaded to level 50). So when you enter the site the music plays. You press the music button it unloads level 50 (turning off the music) if you press it again it turns on the music (loads level 50). I would like to make it a smart movie with a variable set that would say if this swf is loaded than plan this song. Can anyone help me? Smart Clips
I've got a smart clip with scrolling and toggling functions that loads an external text file. I want to be able to not only load an external text file, but also load different .swf files (image backrounds) into it and still maintain the scrolling functionality for the text file.

How do I set the variables and parameters so that I can do this?

Smart Clips (i Think)

I have a checkbox MC which i will be duplicating several times in my movie.

In the actual checkbox MC there are some actions but some of these actions need to be changed according to which checkbox it is in the main movie.

I am trying to use some parameters via a smart clip, but i am not sure how to access them using my actionscript.

For example (if the script on the checkbox was):
test = "This is number" add number

where number was the parameter defined in the clip.
How would i do this?

Hello All,

I am having problems with a smart clip I have just created.

I have just created and my first smart clip and user interface. It all works relatively fine except, if I click on my smart clip after I have entered all of the information in the User interface, it resets all of the clip paratmeters in the smart clip, and all of my user interface options go blank.

Does what I have said make sense??

Please I need help before I go mad.

Smart Clips (again)
Hi people,

Just a little question for you :

I have multiple buttons with the same style/function, so I figured I could use a Smart Clip.

Now, the problem lies in it's complexity (for me that is)

What I want is a button with a title, a caption on mouse over(similar to the ALT tag, a description) and an URL to an external HTML file when it's clicked. These 3 are all parameters for the Smart Clip (seems logical to me).

I just can't get this to work

Any help is appreciated !!!

Hi - I'm looking for a better way to make a lot of swf's point to different URLS [makes no sense, i know) The problem is @ http://choons.net/scripts/nav.php?name=mixesck

What I want to do is have 1 swf file on the server, but have it link to different URLs every time it is used. I don;t know anything about smart clips...do they allow you to dynamically set variables inside the animation? Have a look @ the URL - you'll see the problem I'm having. It just seems totally inefficient having all of those swf files on the server.

There must be a better way to do it, mustn't there?

Smart Clips In MX?
I posted earlier today about using multiple instances of a generic button - where the text lable changes. I got the reply I was looking for - Smart Clips...alas, I cannot find Smart Clips in MX - only "UI Componenets". What I've found is that I have to use and modify the available UI Components, but that looks like it's gonna be more trouble than it's worth - it makes more sense to make my own smart clip from scratch - so onto my question - does MX have Smart Clips - or has that feature been replaced by the UI Components panel??

I have tried a few things:First, the obvious, simply delete the entries in the "Define Clip Parameters" box - hasn't workedSecond - occupy each text box with new content - hasn't worked.Also - Unchecked the "Lock in Instance" box, then click "OK" - hasn't worked.

I'm having a difficult time, to say the least passing the variable from the samrt clip I'm using in a Movie Clip instance to the main timeline. Suggestions. Sorry, so trivial.

hey guys,

if anybody among you have a good hang on over the smart clips, (already available in Flash 5), then you gotta help me out. Using some of the learning interactions in the smart clips, the GUI (graphical user interface) which does the main scripting is in a shockwave format which is called by the clip paramater.

Can anybody tell me, whether it is possible to access the fla file of that swf file. I hope i'm making enough sense to you guys.

Smart Clips And Pop Up Windows ...

I have created a Smart Clip which has the variables number and url in them. In the Smart Clip there's a dynamic textfield to show the number and a button to click on it.
As an action to that button I want to open a popup window, using the variable url.

Components, Smart Clips, AND?
Ok i have to do for a big company a list of reusable standard form elements like pulldowns and all that ****. I thought about this nice feature called components in Flash MX, but i had to realize that they are only working if the user have tthe flash 6 Plugin , right???

Then i was thinking about some stuff called smart clips.
Do you know if they are still existing in flash MX and how the **** works???

The customer wanna add and delte lines in authoring environment and wanna change the colour perhaps. Nothing special but i want to have a solution where they don't have to chekc my code or anything with movieclip ****, you know. It should be suuuupppeeeeerrrr easy.

Right now i am thinking of using an external text file to provide easy going functionality. What do you think

Autoringenvionment is Flash MX on a mac. And the customers of my customer are using Flash 5 plugin, so everything has to be flash 5 conform.

Would Smart Clips Be The Answer To This?
I am trying to achieve an effect of random letters all coming in to the stage area and settling to show readable text.

If you click HERE you can see the effect I mean. My problem is that at the moment I have only done one piece of copy and the file size is 85kb or something. Which is going to be too great when there is all of the copy set up and in place.

Would smartclips be a better solution? I believe that a smartclip can be replicated and edited without using up much memory, changing the characters in the smart clip (am I right?). Does anyone think that this is the way to do it or is there an easier, more effective and less memory intensive solution.

I have no experience of setting up a smart clip so all help will be most appreciated.

Smart Clips Values Ignored?
I've made a simple smart clip with a single parameter called loadval, which is going to be used as the name of the SWF I want to load in. I defined my parameter as default type but whenever I set a clip property of a value 01 to 09, it comes out as 0. It will allow any other alpha or numerical value, just none beginning with zero. Is this a bug? I've got around it by renaming any SWF's that begin with zero and using different values.

Sharing, But Not Nicely - Shared Libraries And Duplicated Clips
i'm using dynamically shared libraries in my movie. currently i load the swf into its own library mc (located at _root.sharedLibrary) and ideally i would like to duplicate the clips and use them in the parent movie.

is there a way i can duplicate clips into a different movie clip other than their origin if the source mc's are loaded into a child clip?

i cannot attach the duplicated clips inside of any clip except the library mc. in the following example i'm trying to attach the mc from the shared to the _root level. it duplicates into _root.sharedLibrary instead:

Dynamically Feed Smart Clips?
I'm looking to create a dynamic frontend that will read in XML data. I want to create a smart clip that can be dynamically loaded in from the library with the variables dynamically set at runtime. Is this possible?
--->The goal will be to have a smart clip that KNOWs how to handle 'n'images. the smartclip[x] can be called & attached from section[x] and removed when section[x+1] calls clip[x+1].

Help With Radio Buttons And Smart Clips
Hi-

I am trying to set up either a pull down smart clip or radio button. I want to have a two choice response where the viewer can choose either "a" or "b". I can get the form to process and go to the script, but the problem is no value ("a" or "b"), no matter where I put it, gets sent to the hidden data file (the csv form).

I know how to do this in HTML, but where does the variable name and value get assigned? With the input text it is really easy, no problem there, but how does one make the radio button or pull down work? I'll take either one!!

Is It Possible To Pass Arrays From Smart Clips?
I'm using a smart clip to gather data (name, tele #, etc...) into an array. I have it all bundled up neatly in a series of nested arrays all in one array. What I'm having trouble with it getting the variable holding the array to pass it to the main clip from the smart clip. I'm using the _root.xch variable to hold all the variables I'm passing, and they all pass except the array. Help!

Smart Clips Help Needed - ASAP :O)
Hi!
I am having a bit of a brain-melt with something, and I wonder if anyone can help!

I have a movieclip on the stage with 4 buttons in it. The buttons are just coloured blocks (movieClips), all using a smart clip to control the alpha fade.

what I am trying to figure out is a way of detecting which button has been pressed so that the main timeline moves on to a particular frame label. Obviously if I edit one button, I edit them all as they are all the same smart clip. Do I add a new variable to the smart clip itself? and if so, how do I detect it?

I hope this makes sense and that someone can help me, as my head is going to exlpode!!!

I am using Flash MX on a Mac.

Face Animator Smart Clips Up For Download
I've been working on this for about four months now, ever since I completed the biped animator smart clips (I'm not good at taking breaks) and it's finally ready for the taking by anyone who's interested.

What it is: the Face Animator is an interface that you access through smart clips that you drop on your stage. In the interface, you can create fairly articulated facial animations and lipsynching, and then the code is exported back into your smart clip. Publish your movie and your animation plays! It's a fun little toy, and I'm hoping it proves useful to some of you in your animations.

At my site, in the face animator section, you can download the interface, help files, and four premade smart clips (you can create your own based on these). Have at 'em!

Any suggestions/comments, as always, would be greatly appreciated. Especially if anyone has any thoughts on the code (I've optimized quite a bit since my biped animator, but could always use more)-- send them my way!

Smart Clips Setting Form Variables
Hey,

I'm having a little difficulty with smart clips and hoped you might be able to help.

I have created a simple Yes/No radio button for use in my flash forms. So far, all of the functionality is perfect.

My smart clip has a default property of either Yes or No, and selecting a button causes the radio to change.

I would like to do two things, but because I don't know enough about smart clips, I'm having troubles.

The first and important thing is to be able to access the value of the smartclip when sending the contents of the form. I have a theory on how this might work, but having some facts would clear it up.

If the name of the variable is State and has the values of Yes or No, do I access it via "var ThisYN = clipName.State"?

If that's true, can I set it in a similar fashion?

I can't remeber what the other thing is, so I'll have to ask about it another day.

Has anyone seen a comprehensive tutorial on SmartClips? I have a book called "Advanced Action Script 5 in Action" that's ok, but it doesn't go deep enough into some of these subjects, and I'd rather not pop for another book quite yet.

How do I get the checked box to send the value such as installation?
The clip parameters shows 4 items:

style
I have filled them in as follows:
installation
false (only can select true or false)

I must be missing the point somewhere as to how I get it to chuck out the fact that having been checked its value is "installation details please"

CheckBox And Duplicatemovie Clips
Help for Check Box.
This is my code which is used to call a checkbox. There is a function call render inside the movieclip which is called upon by a movie in the root.
Question is, when we duplicate movie clip, is the functions still inside the duplicated ones. it seems that I cant call the function render from the duplicated movie clip. This function works ( RadioButton.render(node) ) but not
eval(mainpath).render(node).
Why??

Unloading Main Projector And Loading A New One Comman
Hello,

I have projector file that I am working with that I want to Unload itself and load an external exe or swf file (whichever is easier) when a button is clicked on.

I have figured out how to use the FScommand "quit" to close the Exe file, but I want it to load the external Exe or Swf file and don't know how to do that.

Here is some information on the files:

LRC.exe is the main projector file
LibraryLayout.exe (or swf) is the external file I am trying to load

I have tried all these combinations:

#1:

on (release) {

(this one closes the program, but no exe starts prior to that)

#2:

(this one only loaded it directly in the main SWF file)

Dynamic Libraries(shared Libraries)
Hi,

I'm a total AS3 noob, so bare with my learning curve please.

I would be interested to load multiple swf files in the main movie and use the libraries from each swf file.

Can I do that with AS3. I know it's impossible to do that in AS2, where you can have only one shared library, but how about AS3 and FP9?

I've found some threads + posts on the internet, but they are not really helping as I need to understand the foundation and how to and what it means, so I'm hoping for a really helpful soul out there to enlighten me...

Smart Clips "learning Interaction " Please Read Question
i've created a quiz in flash using the learning interaction smart clip...what im trying to do is at the end of the quiz to recieve a score ....
