Complete Flash/AS Newbie... How Do You Modify The AS?
I got Slideshow Pro from http://www.slideshowpro.net and I want to modify it to take the XML image feeds from a variable user directory. Say the user logged in has a username of "user01" so when they view their slideshow, I need it to locate "/path/user01/images.xml" this way it loads his images. I have no idea how to get into the action script and make this change.
the "/user01/" part is a variable, like on other parts of the site I call their username like so <?= $username; ?>
So the PHP call to the images.xml would loook like
"/path/<?= $username; ?>/images.xml"

I Am A Complete Newbie When It Comes To Flash
I got it only a few days ago. The only thing I'm interested in is to work on my sigs. I want to be able to make a signature where when a person hovers their mouse over the sig it plays a sound file.
Any place I can get a flash file like that where all I have to do is change the image and sound clip or of any easy tutorials to follow?

Hi I am new to these forums and flash. The most I have done is the tutorials in the free flash download from macromedia's site. Anyway I have knowledge of html/some xml, and want to start making flash websites. So, I would like to know of some good books that teach you how to make websites with flash, and what software I would need. I am thinking macromedia flash 5 and fireworks #?(forget latest version)Would I also need dreamweaver since I am not just making flash movies and such, but also websites with it and... well dreamweaver is the web publishing program. I just didn't know if I needed it because I thought it was only for normal html. Also I am totally new to this so I may not even need the programs I listed, because I have never even seen actual flash coding for websites. Any info or examples on coding flash would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help!

Hi,
I'm an uterlly newbie at creating flash, swf files, and so forth, and really don't have a clue as to where to begin. I have both Swish and Macromedia Flash MX avaialble at my disposal.
What I am trying to do is create the same menu system that I found on this site Here. I've already emailed the gentleman there, but haven't heard back anything (kinda frustrating, he could as least respond!). So, I'm trying to recreate it on my own.
So my first question, is really where do I begin? I picked up a macromedia flash book, and am attempting to understand this stuff, but am pretty lost. The menu system has a spinning football helmet on it. Now is that separate from the button itself?
I downloaded the swf file off of his site, and its actually 3 separate swf files, one for each menu set.
Again, I'm a complete newbie at this flash, etc. I'm good with a pc, just don't have a clue as to where to begin.

Complete Newbie That Needs A Little Help.
I am a newbie to Flash and I know how to create items in Flash, but I am having a problem adding it to a web site. I am using Dreamweaver CS3 as well as Flash CS3. It seems to work in Dreamweaver, it even works when I preview the site in browser, but when I upload the entire site and go online to look at it, there is no flash, not even an icon where the flash belongs. What am I missing?

I'm taking college courses this semester to learn Flash and am just completely not understanding ActionScripting at all. My current assignment will probably sound incredibly elementary to everyone, but to me it has been a roadblock for the past 2 months! Here's what I need to do:
"Create a Flash movie that displays the current date in a text field. The date will be the numerical value of the day. For example 1 – 31. You should use the String() method to convert the date value from a number to a string before putting the value in the text field. (This is left out of the book)."
The best I could come up with was:
"var myDateate= new Date();
myTextField_txt.text = myDate.getDate();"
which not only didn't do anything, but doesn't have any string methods X_X I don't understand what I'm suppose to be doing here. I don't just want the answer, I actually want to understand the answer. lol. The second part is just as confusing to me:
"Add ActionScript to the file “changeCircle.fla” found in the Supporting Material menu on the class web site. Your ActionScript should use two lines of code to move the circle movie clip to the following coordinates: x=500, y=200. Hint, use the x and y properties of the circle movie clip." I can't get the FLA file to upload, but basically it's just a big blue circle in the wrong darn spot.
The only thing I could think of was:
"circle.x=500
circle.y=200"
But this did nothing. I just don't understand and feel incredibly stupid! Thank you to anyone who can help me!!

Complete Newbie - Where To Begin?
Hello all,
Currently, I run a fairly simple fantasy football league, and I'm looking into spicing up my website this off season with some flash, possible an intro, as well as some other flash on the site itself. Not quite sure exactly how far I'll take it.
Well, I know my way around a little, and understand html, and a little bit of php and mysql. But, i'm very new at understanding flash, and how it should be integrated into a website.
I quess my first question, what would be the best way to proceed? We all have our favorites, but what do you think is the the better software to begin learning with, as compared to which do think has the most to offer? I've been looking at both SwishMax and Dreamweaver 2004.
Also, I've always been a hands-on, trial and error learner. Are there any good sites to visit where I can download some good interactive source files, so that I may begin to try and edit them to understand what I'm doing, and how it all works?
Finally, what about graphics? Are they any sites that offer some good graphic art?

Complete And Utter Newbie
Hey guys.. I am the meaning of the word flash newbie. I don't even know where to begin. I've wanted to make flash movies for quite some time but I don't know what to do. My current problem is what should I use to make flash cartoons. I don't have enough money for Flash:MX (I don't think I'd ever pay that much for anything anyway) and I don't know what else can use. Can someone tell me what a good free program is for making flash programs is, preferably with a good link too.

Complete Newbie Needing Help
Hi all,
I joined a couple of weeks back because I needed a little help, well a lot of help I suppose!
I need to create a vehicle number plate designer for the web. It's for a mates website and I owe him a favour. I figured flash would be a good place to start, bet there lies a problem. I have no experience with Flash. I can draw shapes and animate them, only I've no idea how to have a text box where people can enter their vehicle registration and it show them on the screen what it'd look like. Does this make sense so far?
From what I have read, I can do this in two ways. I can include fonts in the flash file or I can use images. (I have both). What I need to do is be able to type in a registration (i.e. A123 ABC) and click a button (e.g. "Show My Plates") and it to give a representation of the finished item on screen. There's also badges (i.e. GB etc), several different font designs, borders and text along the bottom of the plate.
I realise I've bitten off more than I can chew, but I need to sort this out as cheaply as possible therefore I want to write it.
Can anyone give me any pointers etc? Or a suitable bunch of tutorials I might be able to adapt?

ok I will not pretend I am any good at flash. I started learning 5 days ago and doing it with out a manual and only using software help.
I have created a (very) basic flash animation. I will post link at bottem incase anyone is interested
I have a problem where I have my sound file falling out of synch with my graphics depending on connection speed and resolution of peoples computers etc.
I was wondering if anyone was able to help me to Synchronize (think this is right) my sound file to my images and animations.
I know it has something to do with keyframs in the sound file but the help doesn't really explain this.

Complete Newbie W/ Component Question
I'm a newbie, been working w/ Flash for about 3 mos. I have an animation completed that will be presented through a webpage, but I would like for it to be controllable. I've checked a few component download sites but I can't find the kind of controller that I need for this project. Does anyone know of a good downloadable movie controller/player that has a similar layout as Quicktime (or other standard viewers)?

AS3 - Dynamic Text Boxes - Complete Newbie
I would appreciate some help. I am a primary school teacher and am trying to code some maths software for my students. I am completely new to this and am well and truly stuck.
I have been able to generate a random number less than 100 and then round that number up to the next multiple of 10 (I am making an interactive number line)
I would like to have the first number (firstnumber.text) appear in the 1st frame and then the second (secondnumber.text) will appear in the second frame. I have created an Action layer as follows:

I have folders of images 'Folder1','Folder2,'Folder3' etc.
In each folder I have a textfile with a variable called count
In each folder I have images titled 'photo1.jpg', 'photo2.jpg' etc.

However I need to Re-scale and centre the images in each movie clip. Fade in and Fade Out the images with variables for speed of fade and length on screen.
There must be a complete script somewhere to do all this????
Step2 will be to create .swf for the slideshows and pass the foldername to the swf from a master flash file. The idea is that I can create a new text file that contains the image folder names and use a pull-down to select the folder and pass to the slideshow .swf.
I have non-techie users that need to be able to upload pictures and amend a text file or two - and everything work! No xml, no php etc.
I am using Flash CS3 but Flash8 compatibility would be preferred!
If anyone has done this, please, please help me out! (or if they could bolt together all the other posts into one peice of code). Just throw a .fla my way please!!!!?

Complete Newbie -- How To Expand Work Window
When you are looking at the main workspace for flash, I seen a large grey panel with a little white square in the middle, which is what I can work on, how do I make that actual workspace appear bigger?
Also I can't seem to find any good online tutorials. I only bought the Flash MX CD and serial code and don't have the manual. Flashkit's tutorials are mainly for flash 4 and 5 and I can't follow them with MX 2004 pro. Help!

Modify Flash MX Slideshow
We are looking for someone to modify the Flash MX slideshow template to do the following:
1. Allow the viewer of the slideshow to set the timing between slides.

Modify Script Help (flash 5)
i have found a bytes preloader bar script that works great, but i need to modify it. It goes off the bytes loaded of the entire movie, but I would like it to only concern the total bytes of the first scene. I was wondering if I can change anything about this script to make it possible. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Modify Flash Movie
Hello everyone. I have -NO- experience working with Flash and want to learn badly. I have Flash CS3 professional installed and thought it would be a great way to learn a few things by downloading a Flash Movie off of Flashkit. I found a great one and downloaded it.
So here we go, my first try at modifying the movie. The first thing I am attempting to do is change out some images in the movie, now with all my Noob knowledge, I know I have to locate the image on my hard drive and swap it out for the image I want to be there. I managed to locate the image I want to replace in the library inside Flash. We will call it "bigimage.jpg" This is the image that is currently in the Flash movie I downloaded.
I searched my hard drive extensively for this image so that I could swap it out for the one I -want- to be in the movie. It can't be found...I know it has to exist somewhere because it plays in the movie. What am I not getting? How do I swap out the images in the movie??

The other day my friend on his pc showed me how to import a jpeg image with macromedia flash and modify it by moving vectorial points.
Today that i have bought my software and im so desperate now because i cant work it out how he did it and even worse i wont be able to be in touch with him before the next week
Let'see, I have a simple jpeg image that can be viewed on the canvas but not modified as i would like by vectorial points.

SendAndLoad To Xml Via Php (modify An Xml From Flash)
Here what I want to do:
I want to modify an existing xml file (membres.xml) starting from flash by using sendAndLoad() and while passing by a php file. I control rather well flash, I know xml better and better but I know the php still little. My progamming is partly inspired from this tutorial:

But something still does not function... This is why I need your assistance. All seems to function, but my xml file (membres.xml) remains unchanged.

In flash, after having loaded and having modified the file membres.xml, I use sendAndLoad to send my xml object to the php file:
reload_xml.sendAndLoad("envoiexml.php", membres_xml);
a trace of the xml object did right before sendAndLoad shows that the xml object reload_xml was modified correctly. The error must thus logically be further

Using Flash To Modify XML On Server?
Basically what I have is a flash app in which you write questions. I would like to be able to see the last 10 questions asked. I was thinking of doing this by telling flash to write the question the user types to a xml file that has 10 questions.
After doing a search on the forums I found out this can be done with a php script. Now, I am a complete noob in php .
Does anyone know how to write a php script to modify an xml? And what as3 code is needed in flash to run this script?

Flash Menu Modify HELP?

How To Modify A Flash Player Control?
Good morning,
I do not have much experience with using Flash 8. I am trying to modify a Flash player control bar that is used in Adobe Captivate 2 (called cpPlaybar.fla).
in cpPlaybar.fla each individual “control” is a movie composed of three layers. From top to bottom they are:
Actions (the actionscript)
Icons (a movie clip, the symbol for what the button does)
Button (a multi layer movie clip with button stroke, states and background)
The layer “Icons” is a movie composed of a single layer with a symbol that appears to be a graphic. If I select the graphic, it “grays” a little bit and does not have a bounding box.
The layer “Button” is a movie clip composed of five layers. From top to bottom they are:
Labels (just labels for the button states)
Actions (up, down and rollover button states)
Glow (highlight for some of the button states)
Color (the button background color)
Stroke (the button border)
What I am trying to modify is the “Icons” layer of the control. I want to change the symbol to text.
When I place text on the single layer, the text has a bounding box and does not gray out as the original element does.
When I test the control, the text layer interferes with the click event.
How (and to what) do I change the text layer so that it does not interfere with the click event (underneath it)? If there are any specific tutorials that could be recommended please let me know.

Modify Flash 6 Plugin Detection Page

if I publish my site, I get this automatically generated html file which detects for the flash 6 plugin.
I´d like to modify it so that it loads an html page first(as popup), which loads then the swf file.
Doing the popup is no problem, but I´d like to have the plugin detection on the first page.

Modify Flash Video Bandwidth Template
Good Day.
I'm hoping someone might be able to give me an idea as to what I'm doing wrong...
Using Flash MX Pro 2004 with the built-in template, Video > Bandwidth Select. I'm tring to pass a URL varible of a FLV movie name to the actionscript in the 3rd screen (select screen). I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of to dynamically pass a varible (in this case a movie name) to SWF. I have tried using flashvars and URL variables (but not text files as it adds more complexity). I just can't get it to work. When I manage to get something to show up, like in a simple text box, it always says 'undefined'.
Can anyone tell what I'm doing wrong... or can you not do this with this template?

Hey guys,
I was wondering if there was a way to modify dynamically loaded text in flash?
So to be clear, I want to load some text from a text file, which is easy to do, then I want flash to display that text in a better way than just text, so in a font and size and colour of my choosing, rather than just plain old text.
Any ideas?
I have searched the forums & tutorials for something similar but can only find about dynaically loading the text, but nothing about modifying it...
