Compress Movie Setting
I always wondered what are the pros and contras of using the compress movie setting, when publishing!
This time i'm having a navigation system that has a file size of a few kb only.
With all the necassary AS in it, it comes up to 138 kb without any compression. If using the compression it needs only 17 kb...
this souns too good...so now I want to know if the compression has some negative influnces?

can anyone explain how the "compress" works on export settings. I think it just compresses the actionScript within a movie

i just discovered the "compress movie" feature that is only available when exporting as flash player 6, ok, wao, it certainly reduces file size.

does anyone know a script to detect flash 6 player?

does anyone know the penetration of the player so far?

When Not To Compress A Movie
I've read the posts here about the "compress movie" option in the publish settings of flash and I understand that its using zip decompression on the fly as the user downloads the movie. However, I'm wondering if there is ever a time when you shouldn't compress the movie. It seems like since its an optional field there might be situations where it wouldn't be desirable.

folks,can anyone tell me how i can possibly compress my flash file to a smaller size? i'm using some jpegs, but when i try to set the jpeg quality in the publish settings to a lower setting...it shows no effect to either the jpegs or the file size. PLEASE HELP!! Thanks!!

Movie Clips Compress, Right?
Arent movie clips supposed to compress the images and objects you use to make them? I thought that was one of the biggest advantages of movie clips, was the user didnt have to download all your crap, just the clip...

BUT, when i take a set of images that total about 21mb together, and make a movie clip of them, it adds that full 21mb to my .swf :/ What gives?

I just found the "compress movie" option in Flash MX... is this new in MX?

Anyway, I checked it and it decreased file size by a large margin.

I couldn't find any info on this in my MX books, or on the Macromedia site. Are there any drawbacks to doing this? It seems too good to be true.

How Do You Compress A Flash Movie?
I was wondering how I could compress my flash movie so that It would be a smaller file. It is currently 1 MB. Thats pretty big for those who have 56k modemns. For them, it takes like 3 minutes to load. So can someone help me?

Hey guys I just made a banner for the clients website I'm designing, it's a pretty basic flash movie but it has aboout 40 images that I fade in. The original source files of the images are really large, I didn't think there was any need to resize them before importing to flash because you can resize in flash, but to my horror and amazement, my "simple" flash banner is almost 10 MB large. I was able to shave almost a megabyte by setting the jpeg quality down to 0 but I need to get this under 3 MB, here's the flash file:

I'd appreciate some tips on what I should do , especialy if they can save the time or resizing and re-importing all the images, plus I dont know if that's even the issue so if anyone has any info on what I did wrong and how to fix it I greatly appreciate it, cheers,

Does anyone know what the 'compress movie' function exactly does in the publishing settings. It makes your movie smaller yeah, but how? Does is handle code smarter or what?

Preloader + Compress Movie = Crash IE
Hi Peeps. Got a weird problem here.

I am using Flash MX and when I publish my Movie with a Preloader and Choose to Compress the movie 80% of the time it will crash my IE and others it will not load my movie which I discoved by right clicking on the movie and it says Movie Not Loaded.

Now if I decide not to compress the movie it works fine, same if I decide not to have a preloader and just let it stream.

Has anyone else come across this or does anyone have any ideas on what I can do?

Issue With Compress Movie And Include Files
Is there any known issues with having #include 'd .as files and then using Compress Movie when you Publish out your swf?

I have an .as file that works great when I don't use Compress Movie but when I do use it, it acts as if the included file was not even included.

Anyone know anything about this?

To Compress Or Not To Compress...Are You Experienced?
It seems that a possibility of compressing a swf file is really great feature - I was able to compress 300 k file to 100 - amazing. But - are there any drawbacks? Are there any reasons why not to compress? Share with me your experience, please.

Hello everyone, I'm building a site and the file is up to 399K and i don't want to scare off 56K users. I've tried resizing the pics i'm using and cutting down on animation effects. I do have a lot of frames but still.
First question: How can I maximize the compression so I can also put sound in my swf.

second: is there a utility that will look at my swf and recompile it to make it smaller.

what would be the best way to compress any audio file so that it still retains a quality sound but has a low file size?

i have some 2:30-3:00 min tracks...is its possible to get the file size lower than a Mb without killing the sound?

Hi! I am new to the forums and need some help with loading flash onto my website. When I export the main page which is NOT ANIMATED it comes out 10.4 MB! But on the other hand homestarrunner.com is able to make ANIMATED PAGES less then 1 MB! Is there some special way to compress my movie so that it will load faster?

The Best Way To Compress MP3
I’m planning to add external MP3 files to my Flash MX 2004 project.

I do have sound editing and compression programmes (Sound Forge & Audacity).

Is there any advantage in compressing my sound files (wav) using the compression facility in Flash: or should I continue using my sound editing programmes to make my MP3 files?

heya! I created a swf movie. it's just a plain big banner on the top of a website, that changes every 10 secs.. I used photos.. so it's quite big. Pls let me know how I can break it up, so it's big enough for people who still uses slow connections.

I've done that properties for every image I used, and made them about 30% smaller, but the file still 192KB.

If I have an exe file that loads and swf into it. Will the end user need flash? I saved my swf out as a flash 6 compressed file but when I play the exe that loads that swf it plays like crap (buttons start to perform release action on rollovers, audio skips, etc.). When I save it as a flash 5 with no compression it works fine. Does this have something to do with using the compression setting or will the user have to have flash player even though it is an exe file that loads an swf?

Flash Won't Compress Mp3
Flash used to work fine then one day it stopped working. Now whenever I export the .flv file it just plays the entire song instead of the small clip I made. The file should be no bigger than a few kb, but it's 3.0 mb the size of the entire mp3 file.

It worked fine until I imported this mp3. Is the mp3 file screwing up flash?

"getBytesTotal" And "Compress Movie" Problem
Hi all, first time posting here
I've done a search on this forum and google about this problem but didn't seem to find the answer for this, so here I am asking for help. Just 1 link on google, but no solution.

// The Problem:
I have a SWF file with the following sizes:
497 KB (509.399 bytes) -> uncompressed
396 KB (406.073 bytes) -> compressed

Compressed means PUBLISH SETTINGs > Flash
> Compress Movie enabled
> Flash Player 7
> AS 2.0

The problem is... in my preloader I use the getBytesTotal() function and it ALWAYS shows me the uncompressed file size of the file, while it should show me the compressed file size, so people wouldn't be worryed too much about the size of the swf download.

I want a way to fix this and do something to show the real file size, witch is the compressed size on disk, that is, the REAL file size they would download. Or am I talkin bs?

Here is the code, so you can have an ideia of what I'm doing. (the code is working 100%)
Some variables are in portuguese, since I'm from Brazil. But should not be a problem I think.

How Can I Compress Sound Files...
I put in a MP3 file into a flash movie file I made and compressed it to the lowest setting I could for the movie, I even cut the length of the track, and put it on the lowest quality possible via forge. But it still take a mean amount of space and in the process, the flash animation takes a long long time to load, any suggestions on how i can speed it up?

How Do You Optimize/Compress SWF Files?

I recently did an animation that consisted of 30 low-res frames. The frames are approximately 320x320 pixels and are around 17Kb each. The resulting SWF file turned out to be 1.4Mb.

If you've ever seen the "My Stiletto" tutorial for Flash MX, that tutorial consists mainly of 3 high-res .png images, the car (about 80Kb each average) and an mp3 sound file which is 130Kb. As a total that would be about 370Kb. Yet the finished SWF file when you export the movie from Flash MX is only 306Kb.

Ok, I am new to Flash and SWF files on the whole, but what am I missing here? At most it would seem like my animation should be around 510Kb (30 x 17Kb). But it's 1.4Mb. I output this animation from Poser, which has the ability to export SWF files. What's going on? Is poser just lossy and extremely inefficient?

Is there any way I can import 30 still jpg's into Flash and just animate them that way? I don't know for sure but I think Poser must just suck in the quality vs compression area.

Any ideas?
