Compression On Embedded Images
Can anyone clear this up for me:

If Flash compresses embedded images when it builds a SWF using the setting in the export dialogue, then is it best to import the highest quality images possible into the Library?

For years I have been compressing images before import, but today it struck me that if Flash is also compressing them, that is a very bad thing.

Sound Compression
One thing that has always puzzled me since I got flash is how other
people always manage to keep their file size's so small when using so
many songs, whilst me on the other hand insert only one small piece
of music, which increases my file size by huge amounts. How do
people do that? do they use some niftly sound compression program, or
do they use only flash?. Or prehaps its down to the file types that
I use, its my understanding that only mp3 and wav files are
compatible with flash MX, so with mp3 being the smaller of the two,
thats what I use. I am I correct here or are there other smaller
sound file types that are compatible with flash?

Sound Compression...HELP
Okay, I already know how to stream sounds but is there anyway to compress it even further? I've added voices to my flash and the file size sky rocketed! Even when I streamed it. I have a sound editing program (Audacity) and I want to know if there is a way to compress the voice file (or if I can do it in flash even better). Please help me.

Sound Compression
Hi, i just wanted to know if there is a way not to let flash compress the quality of audio file when SWF is published.
When i import an audio file (size 135 KBs, sample rate 32 KBPS) and i publish the file (with settings, 32KBPS, Quality Best), the published SWF file size is 127 KBs and the quality of the sound is lower than the quality of the orignal sound file.

Is there a way to make flash not compress the sound file?

MP3 Sound Compression
I'm trying make the mp3 sounds for my Flash movie the highest possible quality so that they actually sound like the original. I tried changing the publish settings and compression settings in both the File menu and the File properties in the Library but it was of no avail. I still the get a message that reads 1.1% of the original. Where do I control the compression of my sound file? I want the full mp3 file exported, not a crappy 1.1% of the original file. Thanks!

Sound Compression Trouble
Hi everyone,

I'm running into sound problems with Flash MX, specifically recorded speech.
Attempting to use professionally produced, compressed etc voiceovers of higher-pitched female voices have resulted in seriously distorted, sibilant "s" sounds when exported out of Flash.

Using programs like SoundForge or ProTools to clean up anything in the source files is misleading because it sounds fine until the final Flash export, even while scrubbing the timeline it sounds good, and regardless of what setting the soundfile is, "speech" "mp3" whatever, the result remains the same. It either sounds like they're suddenly underwater or in a large metal tube...heavy reverb and as mentioned, sibilant "s" distortion.

Has anybody encountered anything similar, and if so, how did you remedy the problem.

Compression And Streaming Sound Problem
Hello everyone,

I have a 6 minutes streaming animation for
a projector. When I export or publish the
movie with the Raw Audio Export setting,
the audio has alot of glitches in it.

I want my music to be as pure as possible.
The animation will be presented on a
9 x 12 feet screen with 4 speakers and
a subwoofer.

I certainly wouldn't want to use the MP3 compression...

Any ideas why I have these glitches???

Compression And Streaming Sound Problem
Hello everyone,

I have a 6 minutes streaming animation for

Bizarre Sound Distortion On Export - Not Newbie Compression Issue
I'm trying out the Flash CS3 demo - OSX. (Using OSX 10.4.10.)

I've got a slightly complicated timeline with about 8 layers and some things alpha fading in and out, and a bunch of sound samples being used as timeline sound effects (forget the term, but attached to frames not streaming). No scripting.

The sounds are mostly too long for the amount of time allotted to them in the timeline, and cut previous sounds off. I'm speculating this might be a possible issue. That is, I have say a 5 second sound, which has only 3 seconds of time to play, before another sound interrupts it in the same timeline layer.

There are two separate layers of sound playing at the same time.

All the original sounds are imported into the movie as 44.1/16bit AIFFs. They are mono files (might be another possible issue).

I'm trying to export with quality of 128k MP3. I've been trying different variations:

- setting the compression for the audio files in the Library/setting movie export settings to use Library settings

- setting audio files in the Library to use "default compression", and specifying the correct 128k MP3 setting in the export settings

- or both of these (set individually in library, then overridden in export settings).

I've tried with and without the "use mono" setting (both in Library files and export settings). (This is a question for me: what should be the correct setting for that when the original file already is mono?)

Sometimes everything's great. I test or export the movie and the sound is fine.

Other times I test or export the movie -- with exactly the same audio settings as the last time when it worked -- and now get unbearably hideous hissing/cracking instead of the correct sound.

Most dangerously -- I think but haven't quite convinced myself -- the same flash export file may sometimes play fine, and sometimes play with the distortion. So I'm not sure if this is an export issue, Flash player issue, or combination of export doing something semi-weird that the player only sometimes chokes on. A "bad" export is distorted both in the desktop Flash player that comes with the Flash demo, and in a browser with Flash plugin 9 r45 (OSX).


GUH!

And this is the $800 product which is little more than a basic text editor for scripting and an animation timeline that hasn't gotten updated functionality since 1999.

String Compression Not File Compression Help
Does anyone know of an Actionscript string compression function? I DONT want to compress a file.

For example:
Input: str1 = compress("abcdefghig 2nd word 44444444 555555");
Output: str1 = "GtyU"; //Some stupid gibberish that would make sense to Flash only.

Preloading Images And Sound
I have built a preloader into my flash 5 movie.. it preloads using the "if frame is loaded" code. Once the movie starts it plays pretty slow because i have alot of images in the movie but when it goes around and plays the second time it plays at normal fast speed. How do you preload the images so when it plays it plays fast the first time. The images are called up from the library into the scene.. thank you..

AS:1 - Sound Not In Sync With Images
Hi. Its been ages since I have done frame based animation.

I am converting someone's powerpoint show into flash, with audio for each slide.

Its all perfect in the environment. But when rendered the sound seams to be going at a different rate to the graphics.

Its set to stream (as the user can scroll back and forward) and the frame rate is 8fps.

im screwed if i can't sort this... please advise...

Some Questions On Sound/images
1. How do I code something in flash, that when clicked on, fades out background music ? also want to do the same when someone clicks to play a video clip, I want the music to fade out and fade back in when video is over.

2. Sometimes I see sites that have an image in the background(raster) and preloader right away when site shows up. When I put a raster image in the first frame, it shows up blank first then the image shows up. How do I use a raster preloader that shows right away?

3. for video, I want it to say buffering right when you click to play video, in my case it shows it after a few seconds.

Pre-loading Dynamic Images/sound
what i want to do is for you to click a button and for an image to appear or a sound to play. both of these would be dynamic. but when you click the button, i want a loader to come up and load the image or sound so that the users know that it's loading and not that it is just messed up. thanks in advance

Synching Up Sound/images In Flash On Web
Okay, Im quite frustrated with this one. I post a new question on this forum almost every day, as Im presently working on learning Flash. The way you learn this stuff though, I usually figure out the answer 10 minutes after I post my question, but this one I have been stuck on for a while.

I have a movie. Its not the greatest movie, but there's a dancing monkey, and a neato song playing. In my movie the dancing monkey, the words that appear on the screen, and the pictures that I threw in on the side all synch up to the song that is playing in the background. When I go Control>Test Movie, it synchs beautifully. However, when I upload it to the web, it ceases to do so. What in the heck can one do about this? And what is the problem? Is that natural, and I should adjust the frames to make it synch online? Or could it be a problem with the host (I use Angelfire, and I've heard that can screw anything up if you give it the chance)? I know its not my connection, cause its been screwing up for my friends too. Any help would be sooper dooper Thanks!

Adding Sound To Images In A Scroll Bar
Hello -

I've created a scroll bar with several images in it. The images are buttons, and once clicked, cause a larger version of the image to appear above the scroll bar (these larger images are movie clip symbols). I would like a specific song to play when each large image appears, and stop when a new image is selected. I can get a song to accompany a large image by putting it in its own layer inside that large image's movie clip, but it won't stop playing when a new image is called up which causes songs to overlap, even though I've scripted the movie clip to hide when a new image is selected. Is there a simple stop action I can apply somewhere? Or am I adding sound illogically?

ii) Loads diff thumbnails/pics within the movie

Sound & Images Making My Flash Files Slow On IE
Anyone know how I can shrink the size of my files so they dont take ages to load.

The files that are taken ages to load are things like gallerys that have 30 or so images 200 x 200 and files with songs embedded into them.

Any help would be appreciated.

I compressed my graphics in paint shop before using in my movie - the largest is still 41.9; should I attempt to compress again... I also have my movie set to publish compression of jpg at 85 in addiiton to that.

I'm not satisfied with the download time of this movie. All lines used were one symbol so I know it's not that.

Jpg Compression?
Hey guys,
I have this image at the following link. When I saved it in photoshop it was at a leevl 10 compression. Also in Flash the export settings were set to max. Yet when it comes out, it looks rather poor. I have no clue why. When I view it in the Flash editor, it looks fine but the second it leaves, it looks bad. Any help?

SWF Compression
Question after the fact. I have created a swf file that came out much larger than expected. The images and sounds were optimized prior to importing, however there are many scenes within the file and it's too big to put up on the web without a long load time.

Is there a compression tool that I can use after the file is completed? I would like to retain the quality of the images if possible.

This is a problem as well as a little brainteaser. I have been trying to compress a demo reel for my site and have decided to post it in two different formats. One being quick time.. My with Sorensen Squeeze I took my files from 4 gig to 7 mb... I love that program,... some times. From every thing I have read squeeze can compress flv or swf more.. So can some one tell my how the squeeze suite does this and how to do it... I have tried a couple times. I also just wanted to tell any one that is reading this that it is possible to compress a QT into another QT format with and then compress it into FLV and get a smaller file size. I know this sounds stupid but I have done it with a video clip that was over one hour and 45 min long and got it down to 100 mb… I had 7 of them on a cd and the frame size was 180x240.

I've always wondered what the best way is to bring jpgs into flash, and keep the swf filesize as small as possible.

I've always been told the best thing to do with jpegs is save them out of photoshop at 100%, then compress them using flash settings.

Is this the case?

If so - is the best way to do this, to alter the quailty in the properties of each bitmap in the library??

some clarification on this issue from an expert would be MUCH appreciated

Hi there people I am having a slight problem with my website at the moment. The problem is creating a smaller output file size so that it will load faster on the web. www.platinumweddingphotos.co.uk

It will take forever to load as the swf size is 4.6mb at them moment but once it has you can see the effect that I am trying to create.

Home page is a loop gallery with 30 images in. Does flash count the images as 30 images fade in, 30 images hold and 30 images fade out. if say the images are 100k each. would that bring the output size to 9mb minus compression through flash.

I cannot drop the quality of the file any lower because I need to portray quality in my work. but I was thinking.

is there anyway I can fade in an image them pause instead of (stop), pause for 2 seconds before moving onto next frame of fade in. This would allow me to only load 30 images instad of 90.

Any other information would be great, as I feel like I am hitting my head against a brick wall

FLV Compression And Other
Ok here it is
We are working on a website that use many FLV file in Flash 8 (We use On2 VP6 compression) for transparent background. The question is about the best way to compress it. Is that better to get the highest MOV file quality and the compress it with the Flash Video Encoder, or usign a pre compress file and compress it again in the Flash Video Encoder.

Any suggestion or other way to get the best quality, lower weight and best performance on all computer.

FLV Compression
Hey guys (girls),
I am trying to compress some FLVs to be placed on my site. I shot the footage in an interview style, I am keying the background out and adding some colorcorecting and such. I then need to make the end FLVs 125px X 150px to be loaded into the page... They are set about 17-20sec long and have a slight extention on the begining that i plan to script in a loop.

My problem is that I am having an issue with the end file size. I have tried making the FLVs from After Effects, Final Cut Pro and also Sorenson Squeeze 4.5. I just cant get the end file below 450-500K and look good. I have tried adjusting the datarate all the way down to 176Kbps(video) and 64Kbps mono(audio)... anything below that seems to make the image "smoke and boil" as someone looking over my shoulder mentioned...

Any ideas about getting the file size down further would be much appreciated. Thanks
