String Compression Not File Compression Help
Does anyone know of an Actionscript string compression function? I DONT want to compress a file.

For example:
Input: str1 = compress("abcdefghig 2nd word 44444444 555555");
Output: str1 = "GtyU"; //Some stupid gibberish that would make sense to Flash only.

Brush Tool And Eraser Tool Troubles
i've been using flash for over a year and a half and i've NEVER came across this problem.

when i go inside a movieclip to edit it, it won't let me use the brush tool or eraser.

unless i draw a circle around the area i want brushed or erased.

what the crap did i do?

keep in mind that it works normal when i'm on the main timeline.

Fill Tool - THE MOST ANNOYING TOOL EVER
I'm trying to draw stuff, but the fill tool never works when I want it to. I try to fill something in, so I mess with the options till it works, but sometimes.. I CANT FILL IT IN AT ALL! Soo, then I have to do it manually which is really annoying. I CANT WORK LIKE THIS! Is there any way to make it not stupid?

Line Tool/ Pen Tool
hello all i am obviously new to flash and my question is this. i want to be able to draw lines with the line tool and pen tool that do not have rounded edges. i want the edges to be flat with two sharp corners. is this at all possible using the line tool or pen tool? thank you.

I compressed my graphics in paint shop before using in my movie - the largest is still 41.9; should I attempt to compress again... I also have my movie set to publish compression of jpg at 85 in addiiton to that.

I'm not satisfied with the download time of this movie. All lines used were one symbol so I know it's not that.

Jpg Compression?
Hey guys,
I have this image at the following link. When I saved it in photoshop it was at a leevl 10 compression. Also in Flash the export settings were set to max. Yet when it comes out, it looks rather poor. I have no clue why. When I view it in the Flash editor, it looks fine but the second it leaves, it looks bad. Any help?

If I export a movie and set the jpg compression it does not have any impact on the size and quality of the movie. Is that supposed?

You know when you export a movie, there is an option to compress. I noticed that it lowers the file size (obviously), but also no quality is lost. What's the deal with that?

Question after the fact. I have created a swf file that came out much larger than expected. The images and sounds were optimized prior to importing, however there are many scenes within the file and it's too big to put up on the web without a long load time.

Is there a compression tool that I can use after the file is completed? I would like to retain the quality of the images if possible.

Hello all was to do a few animated .gifs and export them out of flash as the gif but it seems every time I try the colors of the graphics get all messed up anyone have any ideas?

This is a problem as well as a little brainteaser. I have been trying to compress a demo reel for my site and have decided to post it in two different formats. One being quick time.. My with Sorensen Squeeze I took my files from 4 gig to 7 mb... I love that program,... some times. From every thing I have read squeeze can compress flv or swf more.. So can some one tell my how the squeeze suite does this and how to do it... I have tried a couple times. I also just wanted to tell any one that is reading this that it is possible to compress a QT into another QT format with and then compress it into FLV and get a smaller file size. I know this sounds stupid but I have done it with a video clip that was over one hour and 45 min long and got it down to 100 mb… I had 7 of them on a cd and the frame size was 180x240.

I am trying to publish a .swf file file from a 49 mb .fla file, and the smallest I can get it down to is 7 mb. any tips for making the file any smaller?

This may seem a silly question - but im new to flash and am putting together a flash website ( a very simple site!) - the site is mainly image based - my question is - i have exported and saved my jpegs for web - and then imported them into my library - do i need to go into symbol properties in the library and compress them again? - im not sure what is the normal size of and image?? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I've always wondered what the best way is to bring jpgs into flash, and keep the swf filesize as small as possible.

I've always been told the best thing to do with jpegs is save them out of photoshop at 100%, then compress them using flash settings.

Is this the case?

If so - is the best way to do this, to alter the quailty in the properties of each bitmap in the library??

some clarification on this issue from an expert would be MUCH appreciated

Hi there people I am having a slight problem with my website at the moment. The problem is creating a smaller output file size so that it will load faster on the web. www.platinumweddingphotos.co.uk

It will take forever to load as the swf size is 4.6mb at them moment but once it has you can see the effect that I am trying to create.

Home page is a loop gallery with 30 images in. Does flash count the images as 30 images fade in, 30 images hold and 30 images fade out. if say the images are 100k each. would that bring the output size to 9mb minus compression through flash.

I cannot drop the quality of the file any lower because I need to portray quality in my work. but I was thinking.

is there anyway I can fade in an image them pause instead of (stop), pause for 2 seconds before moving onto next frame of fade in. This would allow me to only load 30 images instad of 90.

Any other information would be great, as I feel like I am hitting my head against a brick wall

Ok here it is
We are working on a website that use many FLV file in Flash 8 (We use On2 VP6 compression) for transparent background. The question is about the best way to compress it. Is that better to get the highest MOV file quality and the compress it with the Flash Video Encoder, or usign a pre compress file and compress it again in the Flash Video Encoder.

Any suggestion or other way to get the best quality, lower weight and best performance on all computer.

I am trying to compress some FLVs to be placed on my site. I shot the footage in an interview style, I am keying the background out and adding some colorcorecting and such. I then need to make the end FLVs 125px X 150px to be loaded into the page... They are set about 17-20sec long and have a slight extention on the begining that i plan to script in a loop.

My problem is that I am having an issue with the end file size. I have tried making the FLVs from After Effects, Final Cut Pro and also Sorenson Squeeze 4.5. I just cant get the end file below 450-500K and look good. I have tried adjusting the datarate all the way down to 176Kbps(video) and 64Kbps mono(audio)... anything below that seems to make the image "smoke and boil" as someone looking over my shoulder mentioned...

Any ideas about getting the file size down further would be much appreciated. Thanks

NOTE
PNG files are by far the best for importing into Flash because Flash runs .JPG compression when you publish a movie. You don't want to compress an image twice, so don't import .JPG images. Seriously. Just don't do it.

My skepticism with this advie is Macromedia appears savvy enough to anticipate this redundancy and compensate for it, please enlighten?

I wish to make use of on-the-fly FLV compression, i.e. someone selects a file of any supported type and Sorenson encoder (or simular) then compresses it to FLV format, ideally with a level of control over the compression ratios either via preset confirguations or via user input.

after some goo'ing I've found very little to support this, I know sites like youtube do it somehow but does anyone have a clue as to how I can achieve this on a server-side basis?

I've read quite a lot of threads and some article about compression in Flash here at kirupa.com. But I must say that I still don't fully understand how it works...

I have a good understanding about different compression algorithms, so that is not a problem. What I don't understand is how Flash works with them...

So, I have a couple of questions that someone might be able to answer:

1. I use Adobe Photoshop to process my images. When I work with photographs I save them with JPEG-compression and tweek the settings so that the image quality and size suits my needs. That said, when I import them into an image gallery in Flash, I DO NOT want Flash to recompress my images. I just want Flash to display my images just as they look when I export them from Photoshop. How do I do that?

2. If I want to compress my images with Flash, I can make the settings in two places: in my publish settings and in each individual image in the library. Which settings will be used if I apply a setting in both places. For example, if i make a setting of 80% JPEG compression to an individual image in the library, and make a JPEG compression setting of 60% in my publish setting, what settings will my image be compressed with?

I hope someone has the time and knowledge to answer my questions. I would really appreciate it!

I've made some rather large .swf files in the past and have decided to go back and make them more cpu friendly but when I follow the steps to compress my .jpg's and wav's I end up with a larger .swf!!! What would this result from?

I had my post house compress some videos for a flash presentation. After many attempts with mov's, mpegs, and DV, hardware and software compression, I still do not have a working format. Some formats I can get video, but no audio, other formats just won't import.

Can anyone give me some recommendations on what professional compression software will work with MX, or what other problems may be causing this.

does anyone know, how the decompression of a compressed swf is handled by flash ?

I have a preloader with a speed detection script in it, that works very well until some point when the loaded movie seeems to get compressed, because the detection script shows doubled to tripled values for kb/s.

I guess this is because getbytesloaded() all of a sudden doubles..

So does anyone know when the decompression starts ?

I went to a Flash MX Seminar about a month ago and the speaker demonstrated the "fantastic compression powers of Flash MX". He took a 82MB video clip (I think it was a .mov) and imported it into Flash MX. When he exported it, the resulting file size was just 650KB!

I've tried importing both .mov and .avi format video to test this and once exported the file sizes are always much bigger than the original video clip.

Did I miss something in this seminar?

JPG Compression When Exporting SWF
HI,

I have a .fla file that contains a lot of JPGs (it's a flash movie for my photo portfolo).
I am trying to make 2 versions of it, a lite and a regular version. By the way, i am on Flash5.
I tried to compress the JPGs when exporting, but if i set the JPG compression level to 90 or to 10, i have the exact same result at the end (both having the same file size).
Anybody knows why Flash don't compress my JPGs?

i get the impression that there are different schools of thought regarding image compression. i know some people save their images out as png and then use flash's jpeg compression to shrink the file size. i tend to save out as a jpeg to begin with. or the difference between png24 (with transparency) using flash's jpeg compression on a very large file size vs. a gif with a transparancy as a very small file size. can anyone clarify the best technique for image compression.
