Converting Bitmap Image Sequences To Flash
Hello,
I use LightWave 3D to create a set of characters that are simple talking heads. Composited in Mirage and edited in VT4, it's all bitmap images. You can see a sample here:
Subversive Entertainment
That version was intended for TV but isn't going to sell. I'd like to try it as an animated editorial cartoon embedded in a Flash player at online newspapers. But when I compress the video it doesn't convert as cleanly as I know a direct Flash file would. I'd like to import the image sequences into Flash and converting them to symbols(?) or movie clips(?) or(?)...
What would be the best way to handle the image sequences in Flash? They are currently 180 frames long for each character, but I could reduce the image sequence to as little as 60 frames. Once the image sequence is converted to a set of symbols(?) they would be re-used over and over.
I imported a 180 frame image sequence and it put one image on each frame in the Flash timeline. How would I convert that entire image seqence to a sequence of symbols(?) that I could re-use. When I exported it as a movie it made a .swf file that looks great but I don't think that's what I want to work with within Flash. (I'll create a differnt background in FLash as well.)
Whew,
Hope this made sense.

Converting Image Sequences Into Video (inside Flash)
On my narrow search for transparent video, the only solution I could come up with was converting a movie into an image sequence, using photoshop droplets to erase certain areas, and then exporting with .PNG's.
So how can I get an image sequence (~500 frames) back into Flash, letting the images keep their transparency AND allowing the images to be played at 30 frames a second, so it still looks like a video.
If there's a better way to do this entirely, please, let me know.
here's a visual: (~3mb, no preloader) http://clay.bellmor.com/gotoandlearn/example.swf
//I'd like the top video of my little brother to be transparent on the outside (black area) so the bottom video (glowy things) can show through.
//note: the video may look choppy because it was recorded at 15fps.
Cheers,
CLAYTON

Bitmap Sequences
I hate web templates... but I am curious about one thing.
The vast majority of flash templates use sequences of complex bitmaps as transitions and effects. Effects that flash alone couldnt produce...
see here for some examples http://www.webmastersplaza.com/flash-templates.htm
the top row, second from left is a good example.
As you see its a fairly simple pag flip effect, but it uses a string of bitmaps. (i confirmed this using a decompiler).
What programs would be best suited to create such effects?
Would it be something like 3dsmax?
I suppose it could be done in photoshop... but the point would be to avoid making each frame by hand...

[Q] How Do You Load JPEG Image Sequences Into Flash And Play?
Howdy...
I am given 9 image files that I need to load into Flash dynamically and play them all in sequence... (Imagine 9 individual images of the clouds and it generates a movie when you do the flip book thing...)
The only way I can think of is to load all into one holder_mc and there will be 9 individual subholder_mcs underneath it... and once the images are all loaded, I can change the depth to simulate the play, but it sounds very clumsy to do...
How do you go about that???

Converting A PDF To A Flash FLA File Without Converting To An Image First?
Basically, I'm building a digital catalogue that runs off a CD and uses a Flash 'page turning component' to display the pages. Certain pages will have links that use Flash's Fscommand call to open Word and Excel documents.
Has anyone got any bright ideas of how to Convert a PDF to a Flash FLA file without converting to an image first?
I know I can open a PDF in Photoshop, save as a PNG or JPG and then import this into Flash, however the quality isn't brilliant. If you use a hi-res image, then you get a hi-res file size...
Currently, the best way I have found, is to open the PDF in Illustrator, then export it as a SWF. Illustrator converts all text to shapes and you end up with a small SWF, yet great quality when displayed in larger sizes. As I'm currently using a page turning flash component that loads SWF files, I need the quality to be good for the 'Zoom' function.
I've found an Illustrator script that will do the hard work via a 'batch' process, so I can take a 100 page PDF and convert the whole lot to 100 SWF files while I drink tea and 'look busy' and read a magazine, but the problem I have is that I need to add a layer of buttons to several of the SWF files to add a little functionality....
I do have a SWF to FLA decompiler which does a good job, however because Illustrator turns everything into shapes, the decompiler does the same and you end up with thousands of files in the library.... Plus there are a lot of error messages when the file is first loaded...
Many layers are masked, (for some reason without a fill), so if you publish the decompiled file straight away, you just get a blank file. Once you go through and fill the masks needed, it shows when you publish, but this really is a lot of work and I've had a few pages that show when you open the SWF file, but don't show when the SWF is called into the page turning file.... Hmmm....
So in short, I'd like to take a PDF and convert it to a FLA file, add a layer of buttons and publish as a SWF file....
Anyone got any 'Pearls of Wisdom'?

Importing Image Sequences
I remember when working on an old version of Flash a few years ago that when I imported multiple images into a movie it asked whether I wanted to import them as a sequence, if I clicked yes it put them one after another in a movie clip.
I'm currently working on a project in Flash MX and I'm trying to create an animation out of about 100 sequential png files, but when I import them it doesn't offer me this option anymore. Does anyone know how to import graphics as a sequence??
Any help appreciated.

[CS3] Two Issues (scaling Keyframes And Exporting Image Sequences)
OK, so I'm working on my first character animation in Flash. Since I'm usually a Maya animator, I've of course found things to be very different, but I've made it work. However, I did make a big mistake early on, that I'm hoping to be able to fix somehow. But...if I can't export movie clips to image sequences then I guess it's not actually a problem.
So my first question is: Is it possible to export a movieclip to an image sequence? My character's animation is nested inside of a movie clip and when I export to a .jpg sequence my motion tweens of the clouds behind him are moving, but he is not. Is there anyway to get this to work or will I have to export it as a quicktime movie? I always prefer to work in image sequences due to quality, but if I have to stick with quicktime, so be it.
Now for my second issue: Flash defaults to 12 fps. I didn't even think about it at the time, but since I'm doing this for television, I need to be able to export the image sequence at 30fps. Obviously, if I change the fps of the timeline, everything speeds up. Again, being used to how Maya scales your keyframes for you depending on what fps choice you make, I never thought this would be an issue. Is there anyway to scale my keyframes up to 30fps relatively? I know I can do it manually, but with close to 50 body parts being animated and having nested symbols within symbols, it would take forever.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Edit: I also just saw that there was an animation forum, so if this thread needs to be moved, let me know. Thanks!

Converting MovieClip To Bitmap

I have a Movie that loads from the internet, and after the movie has loaded, I can start "playing" with the movie, like drag, scale, and rotate.
I want to change some of this movie pixels, but for doing that, I have to convert it to a Bitmap.
How can I convert this movie to a bitmap (and change its pixels) , but also, still do the drag, scale, and rotate actions.
Thanks,

Converting Dynamic Text To Bitmap
I've built a two row stock ticker that runs from constatntly updated XML files but it locks up the processor on anything below 1.5ghz.
My suspicions are that as Flash only uses the processor (not the video card) and renders text as vector information I simply have too many points to move at a time.
So I was thinking, can I convert the dynamic text field instances to bitmaps on the fly much as you can in director?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Converting A Movieclip To Bitmap Data
Hi,
Just been gradually switching over to AS3, and I've hit a problem and its doing my nut in because I can't find a way to get it to work.
Basically I want to take a portion of a movieclip and convert it into bitmap data into another movieclip.
I know the basis would be something like:
var b:BitmapData=new BitmapData(100,100,false);
var bm:Bitmap=new Bitmap(b);
mymc.addChild(bm);
But I can't work out how to get that to pick up the movieclip that I'm trying to extract from.
Hayyyulp.
The link below is the kind of method I want, but because this is drawn at real time it would cause the area to expand with the movie clip, when all i want is to extract a portion and place it as a surface texture. (draw on the box on the right hand side)
http://www.visitmyworld.co.uk/body.swf
Also, I don't really think it necessary to update in realtime, that and id assume generating the bitmap area in real time would cause major slowdown issues. If anybody has any different solutions to what I propose then advice welcome.
The reason id want a bitmap is that data id want to project could be complex layers, ie- items can be dragged on rather than just being drawn on.
Cheers,
Adam

Animating TextFields - Converting TextField To A Bitmap
Hi,
I am just starting to get my feet wet with ActionScript and have run into a bit of a problem. As a learning project I am trying to port some newsticker code I have previously built with Java to Flash. The Java code was built over 7 years ago and runs super smooth, even on hardware back in the day. Try as I might I just can not get text to scroll smoothly and without flickering in Flash on far superior hardware. (Note: I am using the FLEX SDK to compile my code.)
Here are some of the things I tried:
Attempt 1:
- I created a textField object. Then I start listening for ENTER_FRAME events. On each frame event I change the x co-ordinate of the textField object. - When the text scrolls it flickers badly, also the scrolling stops now and again (seems like flash is waiting to complete other tasks before resuming my code.)
- I tried playing with frame rates this just changes the speed but has no effect on the fickering / stuttering.
Attempt 2:
- Similar to 1 except now I tried a timer event. Same problem
Attempt 3:
- Convert the textField to a BitMap. Try to animate the BitMap as in Attempt 1 and 2. Same problem.
Attempt 4:
Now I am thinking that I will have to do the animation using a double buffering technique with two bitmaps. Seems a shame to have to do this. Anyways before persuing this method I need to solve the issue of converting a textField to a bitmap object. The results I am getting are not acceptable as the bitmap representation I am getting is very blocky, if i enable smotthing the resulting bitmap text is way too blurry.
This is the code I am using (without smoothing):
var textField:TextField = new TextField();
textField.text = 'I had this smooth using Amos in the day!';
textField.autoSize = TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT;
var bitmapData:BitmapData = new BitmapData(textField.width,textField.height);
bitmapData.draw(textField);
var bitmap:Bitmap = new Bitmap(bitmapData,'auto',false);
addChild(bitmap);
textField.x = 0;
textField.y = 15;
addChild(textField);
I need some pointers for:
a) Best way for scrolling a display object horizontaly.
b) Converting a textField Object to a bitmap that looks identically.
c) If a Guru knows it can't be done, please let me know.
Cheers
Marcel

Converting Flash To Image ... Is It Possible?
Is there any way to convert a flash movie (or a part of it) to an image? Here is what I must do:
I need to create a logo builder that allows the user to specify different colors to parts of a football helmet and put some text on that helmet too. This part is almost done. The trick, however is to get a "snapshot" of the final logo to use into a PDF newsletter. The ideal thing would be that the conversion of the swf to image could be done by scripting (action script, php, java script).
Can anyone point me to the right direction?
Thank you in advance.
EDIT: Another usefull way would be to be able to send an eps file to the server, if it can be done. I mean to print the specific frame, but instead of using the user's printer, to use something on the server.

Best Bitmap Image Format For Flash?

right now im using AVI with the techsmith codec, but quality lowers quite a bit when imported into flash, and also i cant get seamless loops as there is always a pause.
I was thinking of trying maybe gif or bmp's?
but.. if i do use bmps or something similar, do i have to import the whole animation one pic by one pic? and key every frame?
heres a preview to help understand, the video right now is all emdedded AVI.
Also its still in very very early stages. and thers no preloader so it will be choppy first time though

Improving Bitmap Image Quality In Flash
I saw this at Macromedia site and i guess might be usefull for some users of Flash.
There are a few things that can be done to improve the image quality of bitmaps before and after importing them to Flash.
To improve bitmap quality in Flash :
>Don't scale imported bitmaps within Flash, which can greatly reduce image quality in published SWFs. Rather, use an external image editor such as Macromedia Fireworks to scale the image to the desired pixel dimensions before import.
>After importing the image into Flash, break it apart and convert it to a graphic symbol . To do this, first select the image and choose Modify > Break Apart. Then, with the image still selected, choose Insert >Convert to Symbol and select the Graphic option for the behavior.
>In the HTML tab of the Publish Settings (File menu > Publish Settings > HTML tab) set the Quality to Best.
>Disable the Allow Smoothing option for the bitmap. In the Library window, right-click (Windows) or control-click (Macintosh) on the bitmap and select Properties. Un-check Allow smoothing in the Properties dialog and click OK.
>Use lossless compression for the bitmap. In the Library window, right-click (Windows) or control-click (Macintosh) on the bitmap and select Properties. Choose Lossless from the Compression pop-up menu and click OK.
This will cause Flash to render the image at the original imported quality and will probably cause the SWF file size to increase considerably.
Just some tips, good luck...

2) Is there a way to define "edges" to the image, so you can constrain the draggable area (so as not to drag it off the page)?

Converting A Vector Into An Image Via Actionscript
Ok I was just wondering,
wouldn't it be great, to save swf filesize, if you could, at the start of the frame, change some vector movieclips into images.
This would save massive amounts of filesize because you don't need to embed the images, and also I/you could change your vector in flash without having to re-import the image...
Is there a way to do it with BitmapData or copying a movieclipt to a bitmap or something?
Is this possible and if so, how can i acheive it?

[F8] Converting Child Image To Symbol/red Box Of Death
Hello all,
I have started using flash to create some interactive learning tools, but I have run into a problem.
I created a scene that contains a movie clip of a diagram that rotates. It is an octagon composed of 8 child bitmap images that fit together like slices of pie. I used this action script on the movie clip,
onClipEvent (enterFrame) {
i = getProperty(this,_rotation);
setProperty(this,_rotation,i + 1);
}
when I test it it works fine.
Now I would like to turn each of the child images into a button. I 'convert to symbol'. Now when I test the movie, the slice that I converted has been replaced by a red box that overlaps onto other slices, the whole box reacts to mousover like a button. It is the same red box that appears when I double click on a bitmap image in Flash and there is nothing inside.
What is the meaning of the red box? Is there a problem creating buttons within the movie clip?
What I would like to do is have each slice of the octagonal pie be a button, which would rotate the movie clip onclick so that the clicked slice is at the top, then transition into another scene.
