Hello new Kirupa friend! I am jakartaguy from jakarta indonesia with crazy simple question...

code below is okay IF people put in only number... but if they put in LETTER... result is NaN (non number)....

the code i use (from tutorial here) is:

But question - how do I add if/else for Letter??? The script below NOT WORK... can someone please help??

If my job is english or other language I will think about it...

I am pretty new, and I was wondering...

I am making a bar with music in it, there is a little animation before the music starts to play... I have the music set to stream, and for some reason when the page is loaded, the flash bar decides to load the entire swf (music and all) in the background...
Is there a command to make it so that before it starts to load the music you would have to carry out an action[like an onmouseevent]????

I'd like to get better with Flash 4. I am working on a game, which I have already conceptually designed and begun building graphics for. So far, I have completed the background images, character animations and gathered the sounds that I wish to use, but I do not believe I am ready to handle the task of all the programming without some live interaction. I was wondering if anyone would volunteer their time either through IRC or AIM for consulting on the project. As stated, I have storyboarded almost every aspect of this first person "shooter" and don't see it as being an extremely complex ordeal, but I would be more than happy to give recognition to whomever is able to assist me.

I am working on my personal web-page and I want to define it’s structure/links in an XML document – it is functioning on my system, but I want to make sure everybody can use it… and I am totally confused about the first Flash Player version that supports XML (I was not able to find a clear statement about it neither on books, nor on Macromedia’s web-site – I am just assuming…)

1. am I supposed to “sniff” for version 5.0.30.0 or later (the first that supports XML)?

2. if version is 5.0.41.0 can I use ignoreWhite (there is no word about it in my Flash 5 ActionScropt Ref. Book)?

3. and if I can, will it ignore the blanks or delete them?

4. what about CR and TAB’s?

hi all,

i've been playing around with flash and learning the ropes, but i can't grasp the concept of how it all fits together...

what i think would be really helpful is if i could look at a finished movie and see how it's constructed, because i have no idea about what is a movie, and what connects to what else etc...

this is a huge ask, but if someone had an old flash site from anywhere that they could send me to analyse, i would appreciate it so much. I can understand that people don't want their work stolen, but if there is a trusting individual out there with something that would be of use (doesn't have to be good!), i would be very grateful...

Request Help Please.
It would appear that I have gone over my head again, and was wondering if someone could place me in the right direction. I am trying to spruce up the login page on my mail server by using a flash login instead of the ugly two input boxes and login button.

This html works very well however as you can see it's mighty dull. In flash I have gotten as far as creating two input text boxes one called username and the other called key (setting 'key' as a password text box). Then creating a button to login. Unfortunately no matter what variables I use to try to get it to do anything or where I've placed the variables it won't work. I'm at the point that the more I do the worse it gets.
If some kind soul could please point me in the right direction of where to place the variables and what need to be assigned to the login button, and what changes to be made to the html code on the new page I would certainly be most grateful. Thanks

Request For A Nav Tut Or Help
Ok I'm looking for a tut or source file I can check out for a specific type of nav. You've all seen it and I've seen it talked about before on here. It's a vertical menu, let's say 12 buttons, some have submenus. When you rollover one that has a submenu the ones below it automatically slide down to adjust for the submenus height. When you rollout the menus automatically slide back up. If anyone knows a good tut on how to accomplish this effect or has a source file I can check out it would be most graciously appreciated. Request An XML Doc To Use For Later
Is there any way to request an XML doc then use it in a 'succes' statement later when needed. The reason I have this question is that I have menu that builds itself from this XML doc plus it loads jpgs into each menu item (making use of the moviecliploader class) and there a huge hang time. The combined jpg kg size is about 120 kb, I thought loading the XMl doc earlier would take away some of that hang time. Am I going about this wrong? I realle have a solid (at least I think so) XML statement that does everything I want it to and Im looking not to change it all that much. Maybe preloading the images is a better angle (though I wouldnt know how to go about that).

Would somebody please try this simple test to confirm it is a problem with Flash -
or maybe it's me? It's a pretty simple test:

Make a dynamic text field box on the stage and call it my_txt. Make it big enough to display
"Green background with red border"

Now set some properties in frame 1 as follows:

my_txt.border = true;
my_txt.borderColor = 0xff0000;
my_txt.backgroundColor = 0x0cfd97;
my_txt.text = "Green background with a red border!";

Now test the program and the field should display the text with
a green background and red border. OK, so far?

Now please let me know if you can now print out this text using the
Flash Print function. Right click on the movie and select Print.

I have a client asking me if it's possible to somehow add a date / password script into a flash based presentation where it somehow interacts with the date and clock on the user's computer and resets to a new password every 3 months let's say. Only issue is, it'll run off of a CD ROM.

The presentation is for their clients and will be distributed on a CD rom but will time out after a certain period so clients need to call our client's firm for a new password. The program will contain a certain number of hidden passwords built in but they'd have to call if it passes a certain date so the agency can give them the "new" (next) password. It's basically designed to keep their clients in check with their agency.

Anybody have an idea to this? I told him I don't think it's possible if it's running off of a cd rom but I thought I'd ask here. Worst case scenario is, people back-dating their computers and he's aware of that.

An Odd Request
I don't know if you guys have heard of TextMate for Mac, but I'm switching my workflow over to it right now. Everything's moving along smoothly– I can compile with mxmlc and I've got a nice setup so that my Console app acts as the output panel for the trace() function– but the current "bundle" (that's what they call it) for ActionScript 3 is somewhat lacking, and I'm working to improve it.

A TextMate bundle, for those who don't know, is a complicated bunch of info about a programming language, plus some commands to help programmers write code in that language more conveniently. Bundles are created by generous people with lots of time on their hands, rather than the TextMate developer himself. Bundle makers need to describe in full detail the programming language for which they are providing functionality, and right now, the AS3 bundle is particularly geared toward Flex and not Flash. That's my problem, long story short- I'm working to strengthen TextMate as a Flash development platform, and I need some help.

What exactly do I need?A list of all the properties of every class in the flash library, the fl library, and the top level objects
A similar list of all the public methods of these classes

And although I could make these lists myself, that would take a very very long time.

Does anyone know if these lists already exist? Perhaps they're already written up for other AS3 editors? Any help would be appreciated.

I have four buttons each requesting a URL. I have managed to requested each URL however button two, only works if button one has been clicked first and button three if two has been click etc. I would like to be able to click on each button without the need to click on 1 before 2, 2 before 3 and 3 before 4.

Hey guys, Long time lurker and this one has me stumped for now
I'm doing a local offline app for flash. everything works on projector fine. when i export for AIR the problem arises

in the original flash i use this as a url : "swf/asdf.swf"
now air seems to take the addresses relatively that i need to rename it to: "/swf/asdf.swf" for the URLrequest to work. this method doesnt work on regular though.

I know, stick with the air app but is there a way so i could make it work both ways or am i just boned and I have to rewrite all of my url?

I hope I can explain this properly. I'm trying to create an effect with a line. One end of the line is constantly anchored somewhere outside the movie boundaries. The other end is anchored to the mouse coordinates so that it seems like the line is "tied" to the mouse and changes in angle and length accordingly. I've seen it done a million times, so it's nothing new or original, I'm just wondering how. If someone could explain or point me towards a tutorial, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

A Simple Request...
Could somebody make a simple file with a loader in the beginning, at the bottom. Then have a play button appear when it reaches about 50%? I just need room to add my title pic and a 37 sec. music file. If you can do this, I thank you in advance. I'm making a little animation...but this part still confuses me.

URGENT - 2nd Request For Help
This is my second post of this question as the first was ignored for two days... Perhaps I didn't explain well enough the first time.

I am trying to use the .textWidth property to dynamically set the spacing between buttons containing the targeted text box.

If I stop the timeline after loading the all the external variables and swfs and then apply the action:

to a button - it works.

But if I apply the same code (without the play action) to a frame that appears after the all the other code (and yes I am sure everything is loaded) it doesn't work properly.

I am thinking that it is an issue with timing. Is it possible that there is a substantial delay between the time a dynamic text variable is set and the time it is rendered into the embedded font?

If so, is there a way to check to see if the text is rendered?

I maybe grabbing at straws, but I am a pretty experienced flash developer and I haven't seen a problem like this before.

2 Questions And A Request...Please
I have 2 questions today that i am in need of assistance with..I am new to flash and am in need of guidance....

1. I have created a gauge..used lets say to gauge temperature..and i created the dial ..but the image is flat...i will include the fla. this is hard to explain but the guide on the dial that tells how fast you are going...not the needle but the graph on the gauge itself (ie. 10,20,30 and the little lines inbetween) i created this graph in flash and now need to bend it so that I can make it more circular. See the fla in the following post (file on another computer)and any assistance is appreciated.

2. I have an effect that i want to have that simulates interference in a video line...like a scrambled cable channel..is there a tutorial on this or can someone please guide me in what i can to to acheive this!?!?!?

here is my question.

I am trying to load a var from a text file and use that value (always going to be a number) to determine when to stop progressing through named pages (1,2,3,4,5 etc....) and after counting to the highest numbered page (which is the loaded var from the txt file) then move to a final.htm page.

The goal is to create dynamic forward navigation for html pages, in a frameset without having to code each click of the next button.

It appears my main issue is getting the if statement to properly evaluate when the var pageNum = the value myPage, and to count all in the same frame.

It also appears that I am in a never ending cycle of always resetting my var myPage back to 1 when I reload frame1 with my button.

txt08 is the state
txt09 is the zip
txt010 is the phone number
txt012 is the name of the tape

i also have a combobox with the media types to choose from which i named combo011... by the way that is all in a movieclip named form3

here is the scripting i have in flash:

on my send button i have:

}

on the actual form3 movie clip i have:

_root.play();
}

i don't think the problem is there.. i think it is in my php file.. here is the script i have for that:

i think where i am going wrong is with all the $message = $_POST... and I think i will need use something different for the combobox (instead of $message = $_POST["combo011"]...

please help... i have no idea what i am doing!
