Creating A Backend - Do I Use Flash Or Flex?
I want to create a backend for a gallery I have created that runs off XML. However I am confused which to use: Flash or Flex? I have gotten used to Flash/AS3 now and it would have, I think, a much shorter development time building it in Flash as I wouldnt have to learn much new principles. Whereas I have never used Flex before so would have to learn it before I can develop.
If you show me that Flex is the only way to do this then I will of course teach myself it, but after researching I can't get my head around the advantages of using Flex. Is it all about Flex being easier to set up communication through PHP to manipulate the XML? Is this really so hard in Flash?

Any thoughts, links, advice etc would be great, thanks.

I am going to be working on a new contract soon, which may eventually lead to either me, or a programmer, creating a backend driven site.

Are there any considerations that I need to think about when designing a site with this purpose, as far as layout and actionscripting is concerned? And how difficult is it to do with a program like JGenerator, or Generator, or the like...

Creating A Backend
I want to build a backend for a client with an XML/AS3 photo gallery site, to allow them to edit / upload / delete content and was wondering what peoples thoughts were on the best practise. I understand that a purely PHP -> XML browser based system would be the norm with server interaction, but I fancy giving it a go adding on Flash, i.e. Flash -> PHP -> XML. Would Flex (which I havent used yet) be best? Are there any examples online to have a look at?

Can anyone give me any pointers on creating an all-Flash website? I've read that a website can be entirely created in Flash, but I'm a little in the dark as to whether that means it's completely composed of SWF files, or a mix of SWF and HTML. If it's all SWF files, how does one go about linking pages to each other, and what would the URL for the index page end with (.html?). Thanks.

OK, first of all - I'm a complete newbie to flash! I use Flash MX 2004 Pro and I've got the idea of creating a website for the band I'm in using it. I usually use HTML to create my websites, so Flash has become an entirely different ball-park to me. I made a quick sketch of what I'd like for the layout of the site, and then I'll fire you questions that I have about it, hoping that someone out there will be able to help me! Here goes:

The layout...obviously the lines drawn on there are just to make it easier to interpret, I wouldn't have them showing on the finished site.

Nav Menu
I'd like a drop down menu system that works like this:

How hard is this to implement, and how would I go about doing it? I'd like a little mouse-over effect on each option aswell, something like increasing the brightness? How achievable is that? Also, when the user clicks an option, I'd just like the content in the "page content" box to change, in a similar way to how an inline frame would work in HTML. How hard is that to implement?

Header Image
Just a standard JPEG file will do here, I think. So I guess my question would be - how would I go about putting a JPEG file on my Flash website? Also, I'd like it to fade in when the user visits the homepage, would could I do that?

Page Content
I think this will be the one that will cause me the most trouble! Like I said ealrier, I'd like it for just the page content to change rather than having to re-load the entire movie, similar to inline frames in HTML. I'd like the "page content" box to remain the same size, but have scroll buttons that the user can mouse-over to scroll the content in the box. How would I achieve that? Also, I've used some flash templates in the past that allowed me to edit the content by editing a text file. How would I go about doing this for my website? Would this still allow the same kind of "advanced" editing that HTML offers? (formatting text, images, tables etc.) I think that's it for this part!

"Next Gig"/Links etc.
Conversely, I think this part might be the simplest! Again, I'd like the "Next Gig" section to be edited by an outside text file. For the links part, I'm thinking a similar kind of mouse-over effect as the menu, whereby the brightness increases or something similar. Also, I was thinking, would it be possible to have a music player somewhere in the corner? Only something small so that it doesn't get in the way, but still big enough to use easily...just with "Play", "Pause", "Stop" and a display of the song that's playing. How easy would that be to put in?

I've also seen snippets of ActionScript (I hope that's right!) posted around here...it looks mighty complicated! If there's anyway that I could avoid using it at all, and just using the menu interface of Flash MX 2004 Pro, this would be much prefered and very much appreciated.

I know you've read this a thousand times, and my apologies in advance, the search function isn't working, and i got tired of reading through each page, there's a lot of posts!
So here's my question: this is my very first time making a website in flash, do i have to make seperate swf files for each page like in regular html?
or do i keep on creating the pages on the same timeline and scene, so it's like a one scene website?
or can i make each page on a different scene.

I hope the question is clear enough, thanks in advance to anyone who can help me. It's much appreciated.

I'm new to this forum, and to Flash in general. I have been trying to understand what I need to do from books etc, but can't quite grasp it. What I am trying to do is create a website entirely in Flash (or part Flash/Dreamweaver if necessary). What I want the website to do is have a navigation bar (i.e. home, contacts, about, services) which when each button is clicked by the user , will slowly fade out the content in a seperate window and fade in the relevant different content depending on what was clicked, in the same window. How do I get flash to remember to fade out the currently selected window content and then fade in the new content as Flash has no memory of whats happened before if you get my meaning. Would I do it by changing a variable each time a navigation button is clicked, or is there an easy way to do this.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated

Hey btw this is my first post.

There are twelve buttons that onclick go to a certain page labled in the movie clip "pages." I am trying to figure out how to get buttons 9-12 to be on the pages movie so when people click button 2 the pages will display page2 but with button 9 on it and button 9 has an onclick that goes to page9. I have everything working for the 12 buttons on the first page but when i drag the button to the stage of the movie clip "pages" it does go to that page directed to. I had the correct label names down and everything. The buttons work find if they are on the main scene but don't work in the movie clip. To solve this problem i just kept them on the main page, I may try to put them in the mouse over on the main page to solve this problem. Ok first frame is has this code. I know this is probably really easy.

I want to make a website similar to FlashPlaya's site. (Inspiration ) What should I read up? I have played with flash around March of '04 and don't really know too much about it anymore. Need some brushing up to do . Can someone recommend some areas to check out to go about making a site like that?

FlashPlaya: Your site is nice but due to low processor speed on my pc (1.x Ghz) the fps drops to about 20. Nice site though.

Creating Large Flash Website
I'm trying to create a large website using flash. I've created it using one big swf flie. Right now the swf file is almost 1.4 megs. As the site gets larger as I work on it, I need to increase Flash's RAM allocation, just to be able to test the file as an swf. If there an easier way for me to make this site. I thought about creating separate movies that will load into a skeleton fla file. Is this the best way to approach this problem? Any advise, please let me know,

Creating Buttons On Flash Website
Okay, this is probably a dumb question for some of you, but I am a newbie to flash and am trying to get started. I have attached my flash file so that you can help me if you would like.

I have a little intro to my site. I am getting stuck on a certain part though. I am wanting to have buttons scroll in from the right side of the screen. I was able to make symbols scroll in from the right, but I am having a hard time making them do what I would like them to do. One is a home button that I would like to use to send the user back to a certain frame. I have tried and tried the gotoandplay function but cant get it to go to another frame. If I can get that solved, that would be a huge help.

Creating A Hyperlink In A Flash Website

I am trying to create a hyperlink using a button object with the following action script:

This works fine when I run the .swf move file and opens the requested page in a new window. However when I embed the movie in html and click the link, I get no response at all. I don't get an error message or anything, but nothing happens when I click the button area.

I am wondering if this is related to a browser setting that I may have to change? Or is there a line of code in my html that I need to include to get this working?

The Concept Of Creating A Flash Website.
I'm understanding the concept of Flash animations but where I get very confused is "How to Make a Flash website."
I can't seem to find any tutorials that teaches you how to build one.

Flash is broken down into many parts, making animated buttons, creating banners and so on, but how do you turn all this into a website?

I could get around making a banner, buttons and so on but just can't get around the concept.

Any directions?

I have downloaded many website templates but find them difficult to edit.

Trouble Creating Flash Website
Hi,

I am relatively new to flash, and trying to understand everything by example.
I am trying to build a website down, and I have the foundation working, i.e. the navigation.

I want a consistent transition between loading movies, and i have figured out how to do this, but i haven't been able to create my transition.

I want the tranisition to be a two long horizontal bars, opposite each other, and i want them to travel towards each other, all the while erasing everything underneath.

And then when the movie is loaded, i want similar bars to travel towards eachother, but this time displaying what was underneath.

I have been tryin to figure this out, and what i can think of would be to have a mask, i.e. a rectangle, and have it grow/shrink the size of the screen.

but i haven't been able to figure out how to make a motion tween of a rectangle growing/shrinking. I know how to move it around...but thats about it.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Creating Scrolling Website In Flash Pro CS4

I am trying to create the mechanics for a flash-based site. But what happens is the menu buttons, rather than going directly past the other pages of the "site" and jumping to specific point, it scrolls past the other sections as well and THEN stops at the point you want it to.

So for example if you look in the sample .fla, if you are in section 1(satellite) and press the section 4 (employee) button, the window should scroll past (and be visible to the viewer) - screen 2 (painting), then screen 3 (oil drum) - and THEN stop on screen 4. Then if I'm on Screen 4, and pressed the Screen 2 button, Screen 3 should whiz by the screen, and THEN stop on Screen 2. Make sense?

How would this work?

Few Questions About Creating Flash Website
Hi everyone, I have several questions in regards to creating a Flash Website. First one being the user interface and images used for it, I know that some of you use fireworks or illustrator for creating the vector graphics user interfaces. Let's say, I have a pixel image (ie. landscape) that I would like to incorporate into the vector graphics user interface. How do you convert that pixel image into vector graphics? But also still keep the details of the image without losing the textures.

Second, in Fireworks, you can just copy and paste the vector graphics user interface or any image into Flash. How would you do it from Illustrator? Can you copy and paste it straight to Flash or do you have to export it? If so, what format would you export the vector graphics and can be edited in Flash?

Third, can someone explain to me some of the techniques this Flash Website uses to create the effects? Also, any example would be great as well. For example, in the intro, the head of the dragon pops out, other shapes pops and moves to certain areas, and some shape appears to grow/expand from one end to the next.

It looks like it can be done with motion tweens for some of the shape. But can you use tweens for the Chinese words that slowly appear from top to bottom? Additionally, there are some shapes that appear which shows a bit of it then gradually the whole portion.

Can someone provide a tween and AS example of the intro? ie. an image or two with vector graphics that pops out to certain areas. Thanks.

Creating A Full Flash Website.
Hello, I am new to Flash, well, somewhat. I know how to do the basic things, but I have never messed around with Actionscript, or anything like that. What my goal is, is to create a personal website for myself in all Flash. The problem is.. I don't really understand how to link all my FLAs together, and I am not really sure on how to create all of the animations I want. I mean, on sites like 2advanced, did they actaully motion tween all of those animations when the page loads, or when you click a button for a different page? Guess i'm just a little overwhelmed by it all, but any help is very much appreciated. Thanks!

I am thinking of creating a full flash website and need to know some things before i do so. I have looked through the movies on this site and the tutorials but i still have never found out what exactly is the best way to create a full flash website. We have all seen sites like www.2advanced.com and www.whoiswe.com where the site doesn't take alot of time to load but the images and animations are amazing. I guess what i am asking is, what is the best way to do these type sites. Should i use "load movie" for each link? or should i make a very large file with 10 scenes and preload it all? Right now, on my site for my band ( www.loband.com ) i have a flash file for just the navigation and if you are on dial up.....you might as well go get a sandwich and come back in a bit. And the graphics and animation are not all that crazy. Any help, any files for examples, any emails would be greatly appreciated.

Creating Flash Website With Single Navigation
I created a website in a single movie using scenes whereby clicking a button would load the appropriate scene or "page". After perusing the forums, I realized that most people advocated using a single navigation mc and then loading mc's for each page. This is more efficient, smaller file sizes and only loads pages (mc) as necessary. I guess you can use actionscript to indicate the down state for a clicked button and load a mc of the appropriate page. However, I cannot discern the code or understand the "container" for the buttons or how to go about creating a site in this manner. In addition, I would like to "convert" the site with scenes I just completed. Is there a tutorial or can someone explain the philosophy and steps involved in creating a site in this manner?

Hi i have a website which is a gangster MMORPG, it using PHP, CSS, HTML and some javascript but however with the amount of game similar to mine i want to make it unique so i bought "building flash websites for dummies" i have read must of it and understand most of it. but however don't really have a clue i it could actually work with my website.

what i want to know is can it work with my current PHP & MYSQL, so for example i want to create a logging page with flash to replace my old PHP/HTML one this will be my first crack at it. but will flash be able to check the MYSQL database and send error messages back to the view etc.

Creating A Simple Flash Website - Button Problems
I am totally new to this. Please be as detailed as possible. I do not know anything.

I'm building a website using this basic model (http://www.oman3d.com/tutorials/flash/simple_website/). I tested the tutorial to become familiar with it.

However, I want to use custom buttons that I made in Photoshop as links to the other pages in the website. The tutorial I'm using only demonstrates the use of components and parameters. How would I go about doing the same thing but with my own buttons? I've imported them as TIFF. Is that correct? Do I need to make them into symbols? And even then, how do I link them to the pages?

Can you please help me or direct me to an useful tutorial that can better explain the process?

Backend With Flash Help
I'm currently doing a trivia game and would also like to have an online competition. (Like You Don't Know Jack....for those of you that remember the game). The problem is, for holding large tier/play off type competitions, I don't know what to use for the server. I'm very advanced at Flash MX but when it comes to the technology behind holding large competitions, I have know idea what to learn and impliment. Any ideas?

(the basic idea is that people would compete against each other online...both being asked a question at the same time and the first to answer gets the point...that's the basic jist of what I need it to do)

Hi, I have been working with flash for about three years, I have yet to integrate a backend with a full flash site. The objective is to build a complete flash site where the client can update his images. I could allways take the easy way out and make a pretty decent hybrid site in asp which is still likely if I there is no simple solution to creating a 100% integrated backend within flash. Flash To PDF Via Backend?
Okay so we're working on a photography site at the moment for a client that wants to be able to have a lightbox that is 'downloadable' via pdf from the site.

I have looked into this over Google and other places, but still have not come over the best solution as of right now. How does one convert everything in a flash movie, let's say it contains 20 images or so --- directly to a pdf file via the backend and then have it prompt the user to save it to their computer?

I am pretty sure it has to be via PHP or Flash Communication Server...but am I right here?

What Backend To Use With CMS In Flash?
I've read several tutorials on how to import xml files into flash and built a couple of pages which do so, but what do use as your management tool? Or what tool do you use to alter the xml files? Are there any "out of the box" solutions and what do they cost?

Flash Login With ASP Backend Without DB

From what I understand, using Flash Actionscript to do a password protected movie is not really that secured as all variables in Flash are store as txt, pls correct me if I'm wrong.

How difficut it is to do it with ASP and is this the correct way:

1.Flash Frame 01
-Login with User name and Password
-User clicks sent button
-getURL sents name & password to check.asp

2.Check.asp
-ASP script that checks sent pasword/user with Text File
-eg password.txt

3.ASP sents something back to Flash
-If user/passward = correct, go to Frame 03
-If user/passward = incorrect, go to frame 01

a basic form PLUS a jpg upload button
it seems SO simple
once we have the jpgs
and txt files in the folder with our swf
we're fine!

we then plug jpg's into movie clips
and text's into dynamic text fields
no problem

do I HAVE to even use a database
if I just want the jpgs and txt files
on the server in the same folder as the swf and html files

seems like a full blown database is overkill
I don't need any search functions
then again
possibly a database
probably my MySQL is required to do this

PHP or XML??
do I have to use one of these?

Best Way To Display Spreadsheet Data In Flash? (no Backend)
i was wondering what anyone's advice would be on the best way to display spreadsheet data in flash? specifically, time series data i would preferably like to display in bar or line format. while i would like the user to be able to dynamically change the properties of the chart, the data itself will *not* be pulling off of a mysql, generator or other backend table. (perhaps xml?)

i know there is swiff chart and wa chart out there but if there this an extension (read: *free*) (also, i dont need it to be that comprehensive) that does all this, that would be much preferred.

Insert Images Into Database Using Flash Frontend PHP Backend
Hi

I need some help. I am trying to make an address book where I am storing the name number and address of people.
I am using flash(MX) as my front end and storing the data into MySQL database using PHP.
Everything is working fine.
I was trying to modify my file so that I can store an image of the person as well, so that when I click on their name I see their details along with their image.
I dont know how to upload the images using flash. I need to make browse button with which I can search my machine and attach the image and insert it into my database.

Creating "hyperlinks" Within Full Flash Website? HELP
Pretty new to flash, so bought a template to build a website. I have basically figured out how to do everything thus far, except how to link one page to another. Very simple task in HTML (hyperlink), not so much in flash apparently.

Each page of the website is a collection of symbols and movie clips it seems. The template has 4 main pages that when you click on one of the menu items across the top, you go to one of these pages. Very simple.

So I created a copy of one of the symbols and modified the text on it to be a new page.

Now I want to create a "hyperlink" from some text to this new symbol that has my new text on it. Each page calls a series of symbols to create the full layout of the page.

I have created the button around the text I want to be active and now completely stuck on the code necessary to call up this new page (symbol copy).

I have looked everywhere and really can't find exactly how to do it. Any assistance on this is GREATLY appreciated!!
