Flash :: Creating Older Format Flash Files

Flash Publishing - Writing Over Older Files?
Wondering if anyone can offer suggestions on what I'm missing. I create a wonderful flash file.. with or without video. I publish the files and upload to the web. Everything works beautifully. However if ever I need to make changes (which is all the time) to the file, I go in and 'publish' again over the same files and upload to the net, I get a blank screne every single time. Before publishing, I test the movie and it appears to run wonderfully. I test the html file and it appears to run wonderfully. However when I upload to the net, I get 'nothing'.. nada.. zippo... I end up having to save the .fla file under an entirely new name and upload.. I would like to keep the same html page, but can't.. can anyone offer ideas on what may cause this? I'm running Flash 8 Pro and using Dreamweaver 8 to upload. Thanks ever so much!!

My Flash MX 2004 Professional Will Not Open Older .fla Files
I have a copy of flash MX 2004 Professional on my work computer but I'm having difficulties getting it to open some .fla files from flash MX (and flash 8). When I try to open the files I get the error message " unexpected file type." At first I thought it was because my files might be corrupt, I've been having troubles with my portable drive, but I decided to come here to Kirupa and download some source files and I got the same message so I think the problem is with MX 2004.

Has anyone had any problems with this or know how I might be able to fix it? I have downloaded the updater (do I have to run the updater or dose it update automatically?) but have not tried a fresh reinstall.

Any ideas?

Flash Player Older Versions For Linux/socket Policy Files
can anyone tell me where i can download FP 9.0.115 for linux from?

Adobe site gives only windows versions

actually i am doing a project that relies on XMLSocket for client-server communications (can't use urlloader, requires real time connection). when i installed FP in our new linux machine, 9.0.124 was automatically installed and i can't make XMLSocket connection from that due to new security policy.
(i read a lot of white papers about setting up a socket server and having a master policy file and stuff but nothing worked for me. i put the crossdomain.xml with allow-access-from ='*' and to-ports ='*' in every possible folders to no avail so i thought i would leave that head ache for another time and go on with 9.0.115 for the time being); it would be a great help if u can guide me to the correct method here.... (i am using Twisted Python server);

Flash CS3 With Older Flash Files
Im having problems using flash to make files that play other swf files that used to work just fine...
Problem 1:
What i have are swf files that are a preloader that loads another swf file into it. They play fine until i try to put them into an html page. This is how they have been all along, in an html page and they worked. somehow now the swf file (the preloader that loads the swf) wont play, its just white. (example of this is on the following page at the bottom left click the face with the sunglasses on it http://www.christykarpinski.com/videos/myeyes.html )
Problem 2:?
I tried making new preloader files with the same template i had been using before but with newly made swf files being loaded into it and it wont play at all.

So I tried getting a new preloader file (found a template online) and used this but this just gets me to where i was in problem 1. they work but not once i put them in the html page.
Problem 3:
I have tried making new flash files with the new preloader loading up an old swf file and it wont play properly. (here on this page click the second little square in and then your suppose to be able to click three more times and get different pictures-this used to work - http://www.christykarpinski.com/videos/myeyes2.html)

but if i make it load up a new swf file it works fine (except as noted above, not when i put it in an html page)

I guess Im wondering if all this has to do with using CS3 now and the older files being made on CS (or it may have even been MX i cant remember now)? any clue at all would be great. any ideas what i can do?

im sure ive left something out, its a bit overwhelming trying to keep it all straight. and frustrating

Tools For Creating Tutorials In Flash Format
Hi,
I need to create 20-25 very long animated tutorials for new software in Flash format.
Is there a fast of doing this?
I need just to capture screenshots with software interface, mouse movements and insert small boxes with text tips.

I was using a free version of Qarbon ViewletBuilder but our manager doesn't want their banner on the top and is not going to buy a full version - $1000 is too steep.

So, since we already have Macromedia Flash here (nobody used it though) I'd like to know if there is a way to tune-up Flash (perhaps with scripts) to do the same as ViewletBuilder.

Any suggestions?...

Does MX Prof. Load Older .fla Files?

Problems Opening Older Files
Even though everyone says Flash is supposed to be backwards compatible I've been having a problems with opening files made in older versions ever since I started using it. I just upgraded to Flash 8 and just as before it can't open any of the files I created in earlier versions. Therefore I'm forced to have about 3 other older versions installed at the same time just to be able to look at my files! I just get the infamous error message "Unexpected file format". If anyone knows how to solve this I would be most grateful.

Opening Older Version .fla Files

I'm currently running Flash MX 2004 but our agency has created a number of movies for us in MX. They are willing to supply the source files but I get an error when I try to open them. Is there something I need to do open backward versioned files?

Creating Dynamic Text (Introduction To Flash MX , PDF Format)
I am new to the Flash software and am having problems with "creating dynamic text", starting on page 36 to page 40. What the problem is that I went and loaded text to my movie using the "loadVariables" action. This action includes a parameter to specify the path to the variable text. The text is in a file named "copy.txt" within the "Introduction to Flash MX Tutorial". The path is: ../assets/copy.txt

What I did was to open the "Actions" panel, then chose Actions >Browser/Network, then double-clicked "loadVariables". The ActionScript is then added to the Script pane. Parameters for the action appear above the Script pane.

In the "URL" text box I typed the path to the text file as: ../assets/copy.txt per instructions on page 40 of the "Introdution to Flash MX" tutorial. When I saved the movie and clicked on test movie the movie ran as it should but the text did not appear, instead an output box with the following appeared: "Error opening URL "file:///C|/Program%20Files/Macromedia/Flash%20MX/Tutorials/assets/copy.txt". So what did I do wrong??

Best Image Format For Smaller Flash Files

Hello there,

I have been updating a website with a lot more pictures in the gallery. What my question is, what is the best way to save images to load into Flash??

I have been told in the past that if I save all my images as .psd then load those into Flash they will be compressed smaller than .jpgs. Even though the .jpgs files would be smaller than .psd.

Is this true? Also, would you say this site takes too long to load? If so how would you make it load faster?? www.countandcastle.com

I have attached my files as you see the flash file reads from the .txt doc - but how can I add links to the .txt file?

Creating SWF Files Outside Of Flash
This question has three parts.

First. I am creating a movie that uses floorplans exported from MS Visio as a background. The movie has to dynamically import these images based on who the viewer is.

From what I understand, MX can import only jpeg and swf files. I have found the jpeg files to be far to large in file size as my images are very large in dimension. Consequently, I am focusing my efforts on converting the images to swf files as they seem to be smaller in size.

I have found when I use Flash MX to create the swf files, that it has a dimension limit of 2880 px by 2880 px. And if i create the swf with another program, they do not function if my canvas is larger than that.

My images need to be bigger than that as they are archictectural diagrams. (I am showing them in a third party zoom component, so that the movie size is ok for the screen.)

Is there any way around this 2880 px by 2880 px limit???

Secondly, it would be great if I can automate the conversion of the visio images (I am exporting them as gifs, but do have other options)
to swf files.

Can anyone recommend a way to do this? I have yet to find a way that I am happy with.

Third. I could perhaps work with the file sizes of the jpgs if neccessary. I could at least try it. But when I dynamically import the files as jpgs, Flash changed their size.

Any advice on that one?

Creating Xml Files With Flash
We've already seen how to import a xml file with flash and use it's data.

Now i'd like to generate an xml file from flash, getting information while the user runs de application. For example, if I make some kind of quizz and i want to save the user replies to an xml and save it to the server.
Is that possible? i guess it is.

Is it possible to create an .eps or .ai file online through Flash? Say that you want an icon to be exported into an .eps file online, is this possible? Any tutorials or books that show this?

How To Format .txt Files?
I wasn't sure if this post would go under Flash MX, or AS; but here i am. I am loading external .txt files into a scrollbar. I need to know how to format the text in the .txt file (I.E font size, color, bold, italic). Or, if there are simple tutorials or reference guides that i can look at.

Flash Projector Creating Blank Files
I am using Windows XP Pro SP1 and Flash Player 7 installed. The problem is that no matter for which swf file I create a projector exe, it creates a blank files of default width and height. I have searched many places but can't find a solution. Any help would be appreciated.

Enabling Your Clients To Edit These Xml Files Or Txt Files In An Easy To Edit Format
Okay so this is an issue i've faced since day one and am growing tired of not having an ideal solution for. I've learned to create files that can be updated via xml or simple .txt to make the updating process easier, but how do you gurus out there bridge the gap by enabling your clients to edit these xml files or txt files in an easy to edit format like your basic cms... but except it would be cms that would update the xml or txt file and then in turn update your swf file.

I'm sure you guys out there rely on many different solutions but i'm just looking for some enlightenment on the different ways to accomplish this and what i could possibly do to be pointed in the right direction.

Does anyone know how to make it look neat with only 1 line spacing between paragraphs?
If you take a look at the 'about' section on my site then you'll see what I mean. IF I use a line as a spave in notepad then I get 2 when I view online, but if I dont use any spacing then when I test it locally its fine, but online there is no spacing....It really buging me.

Can SWF Files Save As Another Format
Hello all. I wanted to know if a swf file can save the work in it as another format. I sure the answer is no, But I'm thinking can it save it self as jpg. What I wanted to do is make a swf that lets you create a graphic. You can edit the text and Add and remove elements. I know that flash or (the swf) can save the last thing you did in a movie clip. I know that people would like to save the different version that they made and go back to them. If can't save as a jpg that would be ok, but any ideas on save a file as different versions.And be able to acces them.

Flash SWT Files Creating Flash Button Templates For Dreamweaver
I was working with some students who like the Flash Buttons that are part of Dreamweaver. They thought it would be a cool idea to create their own buttons and add them as templates. Reading on the Adobe website it says to use Flash 5 to create and export the file as a SWT file type. There are further articles that says this can not be done with Flash MX. Has Adobe brought this back for Flash 8 or CS3? How else would someone accomplish this?

Easily Creating Html Text Files For Use In Flash?
I'm looking for a word editor where I just type stuff, being able to use underline/bold/italic/font size etc etc (aka wordpad), and then to save it as an html text file... with all the HTML tags for the above options ready, for easy use in dynamic text fields.

Prevent SWF Files From Being Decompiled Back Into FLA Format
Some programs such as Sothink SWF Decompiler may be used to decompile the SWF files back into FLA format. Even the ActionScirpt inside the SWF files can be decompiled as well! No one can even tell the difference between the original FLA file and the compiled FLA file! What can we do to prevent this from happening? I heard that we may protect the SWF files by using ActionScript Obfuscator. Is it true? How to do that? Please help, I must do something on it.

Flash On An Older PC
My parents computer is really rather old now, but since I got 'em a new monitor they want to watch some of the iPlayer stuff occasionally for anything they might of missed on BBC, and maybe a little Justin.tv thrown in for good measure, however, it's juddery as hell as soon as the flash takes up over half the screen, full screen is pretty much unwatchable and seems to chug along at around 3 frames a week.

I know a new PC seems the most sensible option, yet I'm hesitant since for whatever reason, the boot up speed is incredibly quick, and for general day to day stuff it's probably as fast as my 3Ghz Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM, and for example last night I managed to run a 720p Quicktime video without any problems, whilst buffering another three in the background - super smooth and no problems.

If, for example, I load up an online casino too, it'll have a basic game in a fairly small window, the basic card animations are laggy as hell, it doesn't make sense that something so simple would run so slowly.

Is there anything else I can try before just buying them a new PC? It's Christmas coming up so I guess now would be a good time for me to get one for them, but as weird as this may sound, other than Flash, everything runs surprisingly (very surprisingly) quick on this computer.

I've had a bugg reported to me that crashed ie under an earlier version of six.

All i can find on macromedia is the archive of v4 and 5 etc. I have seen a page which listed more that one version of the 6 player and some technical issues about it but i can't find it again

Reducing/converting Swf Files In Smaller Format (width, Height And Kb's) Possible?
Does anybody know if it is possible to convert swf files (with lots of bitmaps) to smaller files in sense of filesize in kb and format (while keeping the actionscript), like converting an 400X300 swf to 200X150.

for instance like one could resize an 720X640 avi or jpeg to an avi/jpeg half that size and very much smaller in kb's.

This question could bring up a lot of things which I know of and dont mean to do, like:

setting the jpeg publish quality lower
reducing individual jpeg quality
resizing it in the browser window or resizing it in an movieclip

The point is that I have some swf files which are made for an cd-production and are large in terms of filesize in kb and format (width, height) and I want to convert them for the internet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi! I'm brand new to KoolMoves and I have a question. I made a banner today for a story I have posted on a website. To be able to post it on the site, I have to have it hosted through an Image Hosting website. I use Pix8, and when I tried to upload my banner to the site, it wouldn't accept the flash format. Does anyone know if there is a way to convert my banner to JPG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, PNG or PDF format? I would appreciate any help anyone could give me, this has me really frustrated! Thanks!!!

Problems With Older Version Of Flash
Hello everyone...this is my first post here. I'm having a problem with a movie I've been working on in Flash. I have Flash 4 on my computer, and have been working on this movie for a long time. I keep it on a disk, and I recently opened it on a different computer that had Flash MX. I did some work on that computer and saved it, and now when I try to open it in Flash 4 I get a message saying "Unexpected File Format". I've tried loading it on the Flash MX computer and saving it as a Flash 5 file, and that doesn't work either. Is there any way I can open the file in Flash 4, or convert it in Flash MX so it can be opened in Flash 4? Thanks in advance...

I've just installed Flash MX and when I try to open files that I produced in Flash 5 I get the message that they 'failed to open.'
Any ideas anyone? Do I need to install a patch?

I am trying to install older Flash players for testing, and to see if different versions can exist side by side. On this Macromedia site, you can download older players: Download older players

However, what I get are cab files with an inf and ocx file. It’s not clear to me what I should do with those files to install the older players.

Flash 2004 Won't Open Older .fla's
I have noticed the new flash mx 2004 won't open up my .fla files that I built with the previous flash mx. I am getting error "unexpected file format". Has anybody else had this problem? Is there a way to fix this? Thanks in advance.

SetInterval And Older Flash Players
I think I have a problem with my Flash app, and am not sure what to do. My app uses the following code, and includes setInterval. The app displays fine on my computer, but I have Flash Player 7. A friend tried to load the web page containing this code, but it never loads the Flash app...he disconnected before I could ask him what version of the Flash Player he was using, but something tells me that it is an older version. Can someone tell me if this is the reason for the file not loading, and if so, is there a way to make this code work on Players dating back to Flash Player 2?

When I donwload an want to use the Archived MM Flash Players, I can't get them to work!

I don't know where to put the 2 files after decompression.

Tried searching for this, but got over 500 pages of results so if this is a repost go ahead and let me have it .

If you need to download old versions of the flash program or player, you can get them from http://www.oldversion.com.

Now I have not downloaded the flash programs from here, but I did go here to get an older version of quicktime.

So I figured this may be of some use to some people here.

P.S. You can get older versions of other software programs there as well, and no I have nothing to do with the site
