Dreamweaver Update Seems To Take Care Of IE Problem With Embedded Flash
I know this is a Flash forum, but this does relate to those who use Dreamweaver to build their sites with embedded Flash. There is now an update patch from Adobe/Macromedia (Dreamweaver patch 8.02) that automatically writes the javascript and puts it in a Script folder for you. So if you have Dreamweaver 8, I recommend this patch.

If you don't have Dreamweaver 8, then I can recommend a couple of utilities I have tested. One is: FSR

Flash 8 Wants To Update Player (why) Video Embedded
I have a flash movie created with Flash MX set to Flash Player 7 and Action Script 2.0 with an embedded MOV file.
A user with Flash 8.22 can't see the movie in IE because he gets a need to update Active X message. Unfortunately he does not have admin privileges to allow Flash Player to update.
What I would like an answer to is why is Flash 8 not running this movie in the first place???

Url Links Created In Flash And Embedded In Dreamweaver?
I created a menubar in Flash MX with hyperlinks to the other pages on the site and embedded it on the home page in Dreamweaver MX.
I used the button feature in Flash MX to create the menu links. I programed the button to go to the link on the hit state.
The problem is the embedded file shows up on the home page in preview mode but the button links don't go to the linked pages.
does anyone have any idea what this is?

Update Browser Check Files For Old Dreamweaver Version?
I'm still using Dreamweaver MX 2004, because my school hasn't upgraded its free (VPN-tied) options, and I can't afford to buy an updated version myself.
Unfortunately, the "Target Browser Check" only goes up through IE6, and has "Mozilla 1.0" but no Firefox.
Does anybody know if there is a way to update the files that Dreamweaver uses for its CSS/HTML browser check, without buying a new version?

Safari Can Just Die For All I Care
For Mac and Safari Users. If you can help me it would be a merry xmas. If the sob story doesn't interest you please skip to THE SUMMED UP ISSUE below.
I made a virtual store tour for a client. The tour was of one of their main outlets. I made it put it in a sample html file for display purposes and the job was done. Cheap and quick was what they wanted and I took very little time in doing it and was hoping to leave it at that.
Suddenly last week I get a call last week. The client says "it's not working , can you see whats wrong with it."
I immediatly began testing it out on various browsers.
I have a mac laptop with safari and tested it out and it didn't work. It would load the top bar and bottom bar, but it would not load the .swf in safari.
I right clicked on the area where it should be and I didn't get the options that usually come about in regards to flahs player. There was for all intents and purposes no flash .swf being "embedded" into the shtml document my client had inserted into. Note that it was loaded fine in both PC and MAC internet explorer.
I then started randomly doing things after hours of testing and stumbled on somthing that might be a big Lead to the solution!!! I clicked on the text resizing tool in safari which resizes fonts to be easier to read. As soon as I clicked it my movie started to play. If I refreshed the page it would not load again until I hit the text resizing tool.

THE SUMMED UP ISSUE
This webpage doesn't load my swf properly in Safari. Can anyone tell me why. When you click the front resize tool it starts to load and play.

Anyone Care To Help A Newbie?
Hello, I've used flash before but I really don't get it. What I wanna do is make a flash nav banner for my site that looks like the strings of a guitar with a link on every string. Then make it so when they hover over a string it vibrates like it is being plucked.

Anyone Care To Verify This?
Recently I was having problems getting a preloader to work correctly. Well it turns out that the preloader doesn't work if you try to view the .swf file by itself in the web browser.
Sometimes I will do a "quick test" by viewing the .swf file directly. I had always assumed it was no big deal since you see the .swf file regardless.
In other words, let's say your preloader is named "preloader.swf"-and in your browser address bar, if you simply type in http://www.mycompany.com/preloader.swf , the preloader will not work (assuming your ActionScript is at the beginning of the timeline)-the movie clip will fully load, which will simply be a long pause for dial-up customers. However, if you use the object tags found associated with an HTML/XHTML document and provide the appropriate URL, then it does work.
Anyone care to verify this with a dial up connection?

Anybody Care To Code Review My First AS3 Package?
I was hoping someone very AS3 savvy could take a peak at my first package attemp. Please be gentle! Basically it a multiple item loader, for loading a series of swfs or image files in sequence, in AS2 i used something similar to preload all my external swf and to cache BitmapData. Functionally it seems to be working fine, what I'm hoping for is some input on my class usage/structure and event handling and whether it's up to snuff or out to lunch.
The package includes two classes, a base ItemsLoader that handles all the events and event forwarding, and second optional ItemsLoaderPB that just adds dual progress bar support. It's only public methods are load( urls:Array ) that takes (oddly enough) an array or urls for the stuff to load, and destroy() which removes all listeners from the internal load instance. One thing I'm not too crazy about is having to wrap and forward all the events for the internal load instance, is this an OK technique or should I be using event bubbling in some way? And if I were to use a different technique (other then the current wrappers) would I still be able to maintain ItemsLoader as the event.target for external listeners?

Preloader That Takes Care Of Externally Called Files?
Hello,
1.How do i write a preloader which would also take into account the contents of any swf being loaded from outside.
To be more precise say, my main movie is 200kb and somewhere in this main movie i am loading an external image(or swf) of 100kb. then what code would go into my main preloader which would take this 100kb also into consideration.
2. Also suppose i have a movie clip containing three loader components recieving three .jpg files stored externally, how do i write preloader for this movie clip?

Textfield.htmlText Doesn't Care About Css Loaded File
Hi everyone. I'm new to actionscript 3.0. I want to load a css file, format my html tags and show the text in a textfield named as an instance 'codebox'. The function wich I'll post below, is where all happens. If I do trace(e.target.data) it shows me the right content of the file I've just loaded, so css file is loaded well. Button/navigation Issues...care To Look At My SIMPLE, Yet Non-functioning FLA?
Hey there,
I have attached my FLA, and I am stumped. I KNOW this should be super simple.
I have a very simple, common setup. main window with some navigation buttons.
I have a layer for actionscript, and a layer for labels.
currently, I have only tried to get the "home" and "contact" buttons working.
I can get a little bit of functionality if I put the AS on the button. Yes, I know this is not best practice, but it was working. Sort of.
When I click my "home" button from the initial window, I get the home window reloading, as I would like. When I click the contact button, it loads an external SWF, contact.swf. great.
But when I am in the "contact" mode, and I hit the "home" button, I get nothing.
Now, if I move the AS to the actions layer (changing the on(release) to onRelease, etc...), I get NO functionality at all. I have no clue what I am doing wrong. There aren't miles of code to go through here. just this basic navigation.

Dynamic Text Field Won't Show Update Until NEXT Update Happens
Hi,
In a very simple Flash file with bascially just a dynamic text field and a button I attached some very simple code to the button that updates the text fields .text parameter, like this:

}
With trace(...) I have verified that "some_value" is what I want it to be. However, the txt field doe NOT get updated! It gets that (b ythen old) value the NEXT time I press the button!
So when I start the flash movie and click the button nothing happens, the next time I see the value I should have seen the first time, etc. - always one event late. Since the trace() I put inside the on(click) handler shows the correct value I'm really at a loss to explain why the text field is not updated.
Any explanations?
PS: By the way, I'm using font "_sans" so there's no font to embed, but trying Arial with "embed numbers" (I want to display an integer number) doesn't work either. I only mention that because I think to have observed something like the above strange behavior caused by embedding (or not) the characters.

Player 9 Update-Firefox Update And Bandwidth

I have a site of mine online which I created some 2.5 years ago probably with Flash MX--Recently, my hosting company informed me that I had allotted my bandwidth allowance--I had recently installed the latest version of the Flash Player as well as the latest version of Mozilla Firefox--It seems that through viewing my site in the updated Firefox browser with the updated player there was some code in my swf which apparently kept trying to download the mp3 file --Some 271769 hits in a few hours resulting in using 1341.07 GB of bandwidth, all originating from IP address, btw--The hosting company is threatening to charge me at the rate of $10 per 5GB over my allotted bandwidth-I get 20GB free per month--That means they are planning to charge me over $2,600 --

Flash Embedded In Flex Embedded In Flash
I have a flash 9 as3 movie that contains a flex flv player that uses an embedded flash flv player. All works great, except the main timeline of the top level flash movie, I need to unload the embedded flex/flash when someone exits the video player. Currently the player is unloaded from the stage, but the movie continues to play (still hear audio).
The flex application & flash flv player (as2) communicate via local connection. Works great standalone.
The wrapper flash movie is dynamically loading the flex application via Loader.
The main timeline contains a flvPlayer:MovieClip instance of "movieClip".
movieClip contains the actionscript to load & display the flv player via myLoader:Loader.
So... root->movieClip->myLoader
I have another movie that contains animated navigation... I need to check & see if the moviePlayer is loaded when any navigation button is clicked... if it is, unload it.
Currently I have...

So I need to be able to call a function (local to Flex) that contains...

... or call this directly.

How Do You Define Which Character Set Gets Embedded With A Font Embedded In The Library (i.e. Korean)?
I have project that uses a shared fonts. The fonts are all contained in a single swf ("fonts.swf"), are embedded in that swf's library and are set to export for actionscript and runtime sharing.
The text in the project is dynamic and is loaded in from external XML files. The text is formatted via styles contained in a CSS object.
This project needs to be localized into 20 or so different languages.
Everything works great with one exception: I can’t figure out how to set which character set gets exported for runtime sharing. i.e. I want to create a fonts.swf that contains Korean characters, change the XML based text to Korean and have the text display correctly.
I’ve tried changing the language of my OS (WinXP) and re-exporting but that doesn’t work correctly. I’ve also tried adding substitute font keys to the registry (at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionFontSubstitutes) as outlined here:

but the fonts I added did not show up in Flash's font menue.
I’ve also tried the method outlined here:

to no avail.
I know there must be a simple solution that will allow me to embed language specific character sets for the fonts embedded in the library but I have yet to discover what it is.

Flash 9.0.2 Update
I have Flash CS3/9.0 Professional which I haven't used much, but seems to be a touch unstable so I started looking for updates...
I can find reference to 9.0.2 on the Adobe website, but no indication of how to get it. The Adobe automatic updater thingy is not finding any updates either.
Anyone know if there is there an update for 9.0?

Flash Update
Yesterday a message came up on the computer for a update to Flash. Now when I try to go on the computer with Netscape 7.2 my homepage will come up and then crash to the desktop as soon as Flash starts to load. My email incredimail will also not work now. I can't imagine Macromedia or Adobe taking done computers you might as well be sending out virus. Can you please tell me how to fix the computer.

Flash Update
While my computer sat idle a message appeared that an updated version of Macromedia Flash was available. I clicked the button to update the program. When the computer sat idle again an error message appeared stating "Could not find the Macromedia Flash." No big deal...I clicked the window closed.
Big deal. Now the same error window appears every ten or fifteen minutes when the computer is idle. At first I thought I could outlast the messages and have been closing them for three days. It's time to pull the plug.

Update Xml From Flash
Hi there the problem I have is:
I have a flash site that dynamicly imports its data from an XML file, mainly text. This is all fine but in my application I also want an edit area so the administrators can change the dynamic text and save the changes back to the XML file.
I have been told this cannot be done without a web technology such as PHP. That is fine if thats what I have to do but the only web technology avalable for this project is ASP.NET.
I cannot fined any tutorials anywere on how to do this with flash XML and ASP.NET. The XML is the main data storage and is not called from a data base. Does anyone know how to do this or any good tutroials as I fined alot in aimed at PHP and Flash that say it can be done as easy in ASP.NET but do not say how. I also can fined lots on updating XML to be sent to a database but I just want to update some text in flash and save the updates back to my origonal xml file

How Can I Update A Flash Map?
I have a flash map that was developed for us, that needs to be added too regularly with new clickable points (towns) as our Guild gets more members. Or the points need to be taken off as members change or close.

Should I start from scratch?
Is there software I could use to make the process easy?
Any advice on how to do this was a limited knowledge of flash would be appreciated.

From my Provider where i host my homepage i got a package with flash 3, dreamweaver 2, fireworks 2, homesite 4.
I will update my flash to version 5, but i dont have the money for the newest version, and flash 5 got some features i want (mp3-support, load txt from *.txt - file, more actionscript).
Does anyone know where i can buy the update for the german version ?
I ask Macromedia, but they says they only sells the newest versions and i should ask the
supported macromedia shops at my town.

Flash Won't Update
Ok, I just wrote this script in Flash/SQL. When a certain item is clicked, a box appears with information from the MySQL database. However, if I insert a new entry in the database and refresh, it doesn't get updated. It's not checking the PHP script for new information, why? I don't want users to have to constantly clear their temp files just to get the latest info from my site.

Update Use Counts In Flash 4
I have been keeping my use counts updated in my library. but there are some elements that are symbols called tween1...tween6 etc. I can click on them and see what they are in the preview screen, but some of them are the same as symbols that i actually created, is there a way to find out what these generic symbols are referring to... where they might be located in my movie?

Is There A Flash 5 Patch/update?
Hi I was wondering if there is a flash 5 patch or update, cause flash seem to crash on me all the time. If I move tweened animation from one layer to another, it crashes, or my actionscript code messes up (the code is changed when I have not even touched it). certain actionscript code does not work, but once I reboot my machine it works??????????
Has any of you experianced this problem too. By the way i am using a PC and not a Mac. I am grateful for any help given

Update A DB Using Flash...several Ways...Which Is Best?
Hi all. I have a flash application that I'm using to update a database. I'm using ColdFusion 4.0, Oracle and Flash MX (for the browser). Since I can't use CFC's or Firefly, I am left to what I can deal with in CF 4.
What I need to know is how to push data to an update.cfm page from within Flash and not have the user see the new page (that does the update). Is there a way to do that? I was thinking of using loadVariablesNum(loaddata.cfm?varToUpdate="+varToU se, 0);
Although the above example wouldn't necessarily return any variables to level 0 I can pass variables to my update page that will have an UPDATE SQL statement to complete my updates to my DB. Is this the only way I can have the user not see the update page? Or can I use OpenURL and somehow not have it viewable by the end user????

In Flash Database Update
I run my 11th grade chemistry teacher's website, http://www.blakleychem.tk , and i was bored so i asked if I could put grades on the site. There was a big controversey and it went to the administors board meeting and so on. Anyway, I was wondering if there was a way to have a grade poster in the same flash. As in, my teacher enters a passworded part of the swf where there are forms she can input students grades. Then have those grades posted on a portion of the site viewable to the public. You don't have to explain it to me very much, just point me towards a tutorial or movie. I have the whole studio if that makes any differnce. PLEASE HELP! Thanks!

Flash Doesn't Update From PHP? O.o
Ok, in flash, I have one simple line:
loadVariables("system/scripts/menu_is.php", "_root");
It works great, PHP prints directly to the variable it's suppost to.
One major problem, which I hope can be fixed somehow. When I change the PHP file to print something else, the FLASH SWF file on the website does NOT update unless I'v closed out the browser and/or opened a new one to the site, or clear all temporary internet files and hit the refresh button on the browser. Those are the ONLY two ways it will update that flash file. Is there some way to fix this or get around it? Please, anyone that can help.

Check For Update For Flash App
Hey everyone,
I have made a flash app (.exe) and now i was wondering. Every time someone starts it on his PC i want to check that he has the latest version.
Example:
The right version code is placed in a file on the webserver. So if the flash app is started it checks the content of the file. If the version code isn't correct you get the question if you want to download the latest version
