Dumb Question From A Designer

Please Help A Poor Dumb Designer
I’m just trying to learn Flash so please bear with me.

I have tried all that I can think of to figure out how to do this but I am afraid I’m going to need some help. If you go here and click on “WWII Veterans Committee” you can see what I want to accomplish. The mask “slides” over the current image in the window on the right, then slides back to reveal the new image and overview of the project copy, which would of course correspond to what ever selection you clicked on. If someone could point me in the right direction, I’m assuming this will require some kind of actionscipting?

I hope what i'm asking is clear enough.

[F8] Dumb Question Please Dont Give Dumb Answer
Rightio folks,

want to create a thumbnail gallery. the thumnails are buttons, and when you press 'em they load a luvly bigger picture.

i dont want to do things the long way round by making lots of new frames with the 'gotoandStop' command for the bigger pictures but want to make use of the loader component.

Is doing such a task possible? ie pressing the button and it loading a big version in loader

i cant seem to find any tutorials on the web been searching all day!

Can you have two different colored backgrounds in the same movie (without drawing a generic rectangle behind everything)? I would like a brown background for scene 1, but white for scene 2.

Designer Needs Help...
Hello,

I'm a designer producing my first Flash movies and I need some help with a simple project I' ve set myself.

OK here's my problem - I have a movie of a ball moving sitting on screen [either bouncing on the spot or rolling around in a circle] with 2 buttons. One button makes the ball bounce and the other makes it roll around in a circle back to it's starting point. What I need to do is let the previous movie clip finish before the new one starts playing i.e. the ball to arrive at the bottom of its bounce before rolling off or complete its circle movement before bouncing up in to the air.

It seems to me that it would almost be simpler if everything was in the one scene! But I am using separate movie clips for each movement.

I would appreciate any help you can give. I'm sure I saw this in one of the tutorials but I've just spent ages looking for it with no success, since I can't find quite the right keyword it seems.

ok people. just had to tell the masses. if you need help, inspiration, a new set of guidelines to follow. if you have creative blocks or need a different way to do things, i have just the answer. READ, "MTIV, process, inspiration and the practice for the New Media Designer" by Hillman Curtis (http://www.hillmancurtis.com/) many of you now who he is, many dont.

after reading this book, youll never approach a design for a site, print or flash movie the same way again. i PROMISE you. the book looks big but its really EASY to read with tons of pics. he writes it as if he is talking to you one-on-one.

i read it in 3 days and im gonna refer to that book as long as im in this field probably as long as im alive. it change the way i looked and design sites, print graphics and even the average product in the grocery store. go out and get. YOU WONT REGRET IT.

New Designer, Help
I am new to this and have done a site for a company in flash.
The top menu is one flash file and the portfolio is a separate flash file.
It is very slow and choppy. What I did was make a lot of key frames in the scrolling and speed up the keyframe frames per second to 75 FPS.
The client wants the portfolio section to be a lot faster and not so choppy.
Can any one advise me on how to do this?

I Need A Designer
to create an animation. a santa claus for a flash movie that will be the back drop at a rock concert.

it has to be simple, yet extremely cool, im thinking south-parky could work. basically the character would lead people through a series of scenes like sponsors, djs at our station etc...

of course i dont have a ton of money. but the job would look great on you resume. last year the back drop played behind jessica simpson. i have a picture of her singing in front of my flash movie. looks great in my portfolio.

thing is i would love to create the santa but i dont have time. if i dont get any responses that i am satisfied with then i will go ahead and make it on my own. just trying to save some time.

Designer Needs Database Help
After much reading, I created a movie that should send variables to MySQL via Lasso 5 professional on an AppleWebserver (someone else set that part up). After a lot of unsuccessful tests with the bigger movie that should send the data using LoadVars with POST, I just wanted to see something actually send. So, I made a test with just one variable (actually, it is word-for-word out of Colin Moock's ActionScript the Definitive Guide, of course with the exception of the domain name, the Lasso file, and the variable -- I used a variable name from the database that was set up for the larger program, which should be ok since all the fields accept nulls.) It never makes it to doneloading. What is wrong? Ideas?

Could Anyone Help A Mere Designer?
I am currently designing a game, which is all well and good but I don't fully understand Actionscript and am now at a loss as to amend the current code I have.

I am using this drag command to move a piece accross the screen to hit a specific area and if its wrong it says its wrong, but I now want to make the piece move back into its original position before moving it, please could anyone tell me how to do this?

Non-designer Looking For Urgent Help
I have just bought a template of a flash site and with no actual design knowledge I have managed to change the text and static photos' on the site. However, on each page that opens a graphic fades into view. Then fades out when you go to the next page and subsequently a new images fades into view. I need help using the same fading action but with my own photos.

T-shirt Designer
Hi all

I was wondering whether anyone has ever come across implementing a t-shirt designer in flash. I've looked for tutorials and tips but no sucess.

What I'd like to achieve is the ability to let user switch back and forth view of a t-shirt. Example: he could click on a button the view the back side of a the t-shirt and vice-versa. The problem is that I have no idea how the user will not lose the design already placed on a shirt while he's switching the views.

The next step of this process is to allow the user to be able to view both sides of the designed t-shirt in a different screen.

At the moment what i'm looking for is ideas and thoughts in how i could implement such thing. However, if you have any code to share how would be grateful.

Designer Vs. Developer
This is just an observation:

I like to create visual elements in flash, lay them out on the screen, give them instance names, and then proceed to program them to do things. Yet I am starting to understand the benefits of using classes and oop. The problem is that by laying out visual stuff and then using classes, you're bound to violate certain aspects of oop. As soon as you write into an external class one of your instance names in the fla, you've made the class depend on a certain instance of a symbol being present (and having that name!) or the class won't work. This can't be in the true spirit of oop.

And yet, somehow, having a blank screen on the fla doesn't appeal to me either; I like to manipulate visual things. I know I could create everything dynamically, by first laying it out there and then taking down all the x's and y's and scales and whatnot, and then coding all of that, but that really doesn't seem like much fun.

There's another penalty, though. If you use stage instances that have classes representing them, it would seem that dragging out an instance is the same thing as using "new" and "addChild." However, you miss out on the opportunity to send those classes any parameters in the constructor if you do it this way.

Probably I'm going to wind up giving up on laying things out visually, but it's a hard habit to break. I haven't gotten specific on what I'm working on, but I thought this might strike a chord with someone. Any thoughts?

Designer Who Want To Become A AS3 Coder
I'm an established graphic designer. I don't have any prior knowledge of any programming what so ever. I know my way around the basic flash animation functions but now I want to take the step to become a master in Flash and Actionscript. I want to know where to start, I've heard that it's better to know your way around as2 before you can start with as3, is this true? Or is it possible to start right away with as3? I also heard that books like "essential Actionsript 3" is hard to understand if you don't have basic programming skills with variables and such. Are there any book/books that cover it all? Which is the best way to learn ActionScript without any former programming experiences??? I'm sorry if this question has already been posted, but I'm very eager to begin exploring this new world so any tips and tricks are highly welcomed!

There's A Struggling Flash Designer Over Here :(
Hey folks,

How do you get a button rollover animation to reverse back to its normal state once the mouse has rolled off instead of it just snapping back?
I know there must be some action script that does it, but i'll be jiggered if i can find it.

Also, when buttons trigger different scenes, how do you tidily reverse out the current scene before the new one comes in? At the moment, when you click on a button in the menu, the scene triggered by that button just overides the last scene and it looks uglier than a bulldog chewing a wasp.

Its making my headache just thinking about. Can anyone help?

P.S sorry if you keep seeing this thread, but flashkit is just so slow for me and doesnt let me know that the thread has been added

i couoldn't get the reply to work...it kept messing up so here is the reply

if you put an MC in the OVER frame of the button.. then put another MC that has the cube go from little to big on the
UP frame of the button, then put an action on the last frame of that new MC to stop it...but when the button goes onto the stage first the button will play that new MC. but then it will work fine...hope this helps.
