Dynamic Text And Embedding Fonts
Hi,
I got a dynamic text field that displays text from a database linked to the swf with asp and a load of database crap. It works fine and all but it stops working all together once i've embedded the font. Its a bit bizarre but thats the only thing i'm changing, just embedding all the standard letters. Am using mx 2004.
Any help would be good and appreciated.
Steven.
Embedding Dynamic Text Fonts
I have a flash game that reads the questions and their answers from an external text field. The game takes a question from the text file and puts in a String object. The game displays that String in a dynamic text field. When I do not embed all font outlines for the dynamic text field, the font I chose does not display when the user is on a computer that doesn't have the font preinstalled. When I do embed the font outlines, nothing shows up on any computer.
What am I doing wrong?
I made a zip file which contains my fla, swf, txt, and font files. You can access it at http://members.cox.net/twlip/gameshow.zip if you would like to take a look.

Embedding Fonts In Dynamic Text
could somebody cler something up for me please -I thought that if I include a font outline for some dynamic text then the user at the other end wont have to have the same font on their computer?
the reason I ask is because ive got a dynamic text field that Ive embeded the font for. At work it looks one way - when i come home and view it here the text is sightlly different and the text is longer! (as if its using the font from my computer)?!
I thought if I embedded fonts it would have a universal look on all computers

Embedding Fonts For Dynamic Text.
Hi,
I am having a problem embedding the fonts for text which i have created dynamically. I am creating the text format and text field in a class file, then using a create Text function. I pass the create Text function all the attributes related to the text. In the the create Text function i also define other attributes such as selectable.
I have tried using embedFonts = true; However this then causes none of the text to appear.
Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?
Thanks

Embedding Fonts For Dynamic Text
I can't seem to get the font I want embedded into my file working right. I have a few text boxes that I using the dynamic text option and the using the HTML tags to format it the way I want it to look. I only use one font, but I can't seem to get it to embedded into my flash file, every time i have someone else look at the font it just substitutes something in there for it. How do i prevent this from happening, I thought I knew but I guess I don't

Embedding Fonts In A Dynamic Text Box & Formatting With Css
Yeah a mouth full I know, but here it is, I have an XML file that is putting a paragraph of text into a dynamic text box, however in the paragraph there are links, and i want those links to stand out with bold and a different color.
So i've attached a style sheet to it and that all seems to work... until I embed the font, then styled link doesn't show up.
I've tried adding the font to the library, (both regular and bold versions) i've tried font tags and bold tags in the XML and i've tried to reference the font directly with css. nothing is producing quality results, they best I ever got was a large bold version of the font that was the same color as the rest of the text.
If anyone knows how to make this work or get around it that would great!
Thanks
Dynamic Text, Embedding Fonts And CreateMovieClip
I've made an XML driven drop down menu that dynamically builds the structure as the XML is parsed. However, like many other users out there, I'm experiencing issues with fonts in Flash 8.
I've read the other posts, which detail embedding a font through the library, making an external Font SWF, and using the Embed button on the Properties tab, neither have worked for my situation, however I have noted one odd thing.
If I create a dynamic text field, and put some text in it, with the exact same Font properties (including a correct selection of characters to embed) and styles as the troublesome one, it works fine. But then if I use ActionScript to manipulate the text, it disappears. I've tried using TextFormat, and that doesn't work so not really too sure if I've missed something or what.
Does anyone have any suggestions or workarounds? I've got it working in Flash 7 and below, but they don't have the Filters that I want to use (just a simple Glow).
Dynamic Text Boxes Ruin My Fonts
I've created a website for an ad agency, using Flash MX 2004. I used the Gill Sans typeface, and throughout the site it looks fine... but whenever I've used a dynamic text box it substitutes some random ugly font. This only happens when I open the site on a mac, on pc the font looks fine. This is after I've published and uploaded it to the web.
the site is www.rspjh.com if you wouldn't mind checking out the problem. (it's most notable under client, case studies.)
Embedding Fonts, Or Font Symbol, For Dynamic Text?
Hello.
I use the same fonts throughout my website. The site itself is modular in nature, meaning several movies are loaded into and on top of one another. I have a shared library that all movies use for certain assetts.
My question is this. Can I embed or create a font symbol to apply to a dynamic text field that loads a .txt file? Instead of using a font the user has, I would like them to view the text in a pixel font that I use throughout the site.
Can it be done and what is the best method.
Embedding Asian Fonts In Dynamic Text Fields...
Hi,
I am wondering what asian people are used to do regarding dynamic textfields ?
I have no problems having japanese or other asian languages work when loaded from an XML file, but I don't know what to do about embedding fonts in the text field.
For example, do Japanese texts usually need the Kanjis to be included (3 174 glyphs !) ? Or are the Kanas enough ? Or maybe all the glyphs are required (7517 glyphs !!) ?
Ideally, I'd like to include the glyphs so the texts will anti-alias, but if this implies including at least the kanjis and the kanas, I assume I have to forget anti-aliased text or my flash will weight mega-octets (I have tested it) !
The same with traditional Chinese level 1 (560 glyphs), simplifyed chinese level 1 (13746 glyphs), etc.
So basically, I think all my question can resume in one : does anybody know if Japanese and Chinese people are used not to embed fonts in dynamic text fields because they need too many glyphs ?
Thanks for any help, especially from Japanese people, Chinese people or other people that live in Asian countries !!

Masking Dynamic Text Fields And Embedding Fonts
Hi All,
I have an xml file and css file that I'm binding to a dynamic textfield. It works fine and looks great. I wanted to add a text scroller which requires the textfield to be masked...and I tried this, but the text ended up invisible. I know its there because i can copy and paste from the flash and see it.
I tried embedding the fonts (that are called from the CSS), but this still hasn't helped. Any gurus out there run into this in the past and have solutions to it?
HTML Enabled Dynamic Text Fields And Embedding Fonts
I searched past posts and couldn't find this specific version of this problem, so if it HAS been answered before, I apoligize!
So, I have a dynamic text field that I want to embed the fonts in (since it looks so much better). Is it possible to use HTML and embed the fonts? Everytime I use HTML tags, while embed fonts is true, the text between them disappears. If embed is off, it works fine.
The way I'm using the textfield is that certain events set the variable, and when the event is over, it's set back to "". I've tried both a pre-made dynamic text field and also tried using the createTextField function, and had the same results with both.
So really it's just an aesthetic thing. I just want to know if embedding the fonts is possible when using HTML is necessary.
Thanks!
Embedding Dynamic Fonts
Hello
I am Trying to load fonts dynamically from an XML file the code is working fine if I am using it directly on the timeline.
Code:
var myFont:Font = new Font1();
var textFormat:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
textFormat.font = myFont.fontName;
textFormat.size = 26;
var flashText:TextField = new TextField();
flashText.autoSize = TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT;
flashText.defaultTextFormat = textFormat;
flashText.embedFonts = true;
flashText.x = 25;
flashText.y = 30;
flashText.antiAliasType = AntiAliasType.ADVANCED;
flashText.text = “Text Example A”;
addChild(flashText);
but when I am trying to load from an XML file it does't display anything if I remove text.embedFonts = true then I can see the font any idea about this error
Thanks in advance.
Embedding Fonts For Dynamic Site
I have been working for quite some time trying to embed fonts in my Dynamic Flash file. Basically I have a Flash Movie that uses PHP/MySQL to load dynamic data. Most text fields throughout the movie are dynamic. I have used setTextFormat() and setNewTextFormat() when setting the font style.
I originally tried loading an external library containing the fonts, however I gave up on that and just tried embedding the standard way, by creating a dynamic text field on the stage and using the 'Character' button selecting the glyphs I wish to use. However, after publishing the movie, I removed the embedded font from my computer and the font still did not display in any text fields throughout the whole movie.
The movie selects the fonts dynamically through a drop-down menu in the editor. Basically I pre-select several fonts, embed them manually into the .SWF and store the font name I want in the drop-down menu which changes the active font in the database. When the font is on my computer it works beautifully, but I am yet to get it to work after embedding it many different ways. I am using Flash CS3, publishing in AS 2.0, and Flash Player 6. You can view the live .SWF at http://www.quick-sites.biz/TestServer/Version4. Click "Login" and click the "Fonts" page to see where the fonts are changed.
Embedding Dynamic Fonts And Runtime In AS3
I have made a post at my blog that has the source files and a small break down of whats happening and how to use the files.
http://gfxcomplex.com/blog/?p=74
The hole point of runtime font loading is simple.By being able to separate the fonts from the main document you dramatically reduce the file size of the main document and you speed up the time it takes to load.
You can mange the fonts used with out editing the main document every time you need to change a font.
You can load as much or as little as you like at runtime. Save bandwidth on your sever by only loading content when and if it's needed.
You can make a library with every font you ever wanted and access it later in your projects. This will speed up production time as you can address fonts used in your projects before you ever need to use them
I think people with text editors and others that require a lot of custom fonts will really benafit from this.
Also though I have only one font per swf you could load as many fonts in to a single swf and load that at runtime. I will try to write a more in depth tutorial some other time until then Enjoy.

Embedding Fonts And Dynamic Formatting Problem...
i've got an interface built that allows users to change the font and saves the values to a mysql database. everything saves fine but when i try to load them, it always uses times new roman instead of the font they chose. i am using textFieldFormat.font=fontvariable; and setting everything properly (i know this because the size, bold, italic, color, etc. are working fine). I've embedded all of the fonts earlier on in the .swf but that doesn't seem to help. do i need to set embedFonts=true?
i must be missing something here.
thanks...
Dynamic Created Input Textfield Not Editable When Embedding Fonts?
Hello,
The topic says it all..
I create a textfield using this code:
Code:
_root.createTextField("textArea",1,12,16.5,232,272);
textArea.type = "input";
textArea.wordWrap = true;
textArea.multiline = true;
textArea.variable = "text";
textArea.embedFonts = true;
myformat = new TextFormat();
myformat.font = "MyGillSans";
myformat.size = 14;
myformat.color = "0x" add /:colorRgb;
myformat.bullet = false;
textArea.setTextFormat(myformat);
When I export the movie, the textfield is on the right position, with all the properties attached to it. BUT.. You can't edit the textfield? If I outcomment "textArea.embedFonts = true;" (or make it false for that matter), the textfield is editable..
When I add a default text to the field, you can edit the text if you click between the letters of the default text. If you click behind it, the text is not editable. If you use CTRL+A to select the text, you can't edit it. If you type one letter between the default text letters, then use CTRL+A and edit the text, it will allow you to edit it..
Kind of a frustrating problem, is this a bug in Flash MX (-> 6)? And does any of you know a work-a-round?
Really need some help here
Thanks!
Dynamic Created Input Textfield Not Editable When Embedding Fonts?
Sorry for this crossposting, but I'm not sure if this thread: http://www.flashkit.com/board/showth...hreadid=531300 should go on this forum or the regular MX forum (where it currently resides)..
Anyway, got a real big problem here, and if anybody could help me out, I would owe them bigtime
External Text; Html Text And Embedding Fonts Question - Probably A Quick Solution
I've been reading every post on this that I can find, and so far, I have not stumbled on the solution.
I have a dynamic text box and a text box variable. I load an external text file into the variable and then load the variable into the dynamic text box. The file that gets loaded changes via different buttons pressed. That's working just fine.
The "real" problem is the double line breaks you get when loading in external text. The only way I have found, so far, to solve that is to set the text box to use htmlText and then use the myText.condenseWhite = true; function. That works also. BUT, when set to render text as html, I can no longer embed the fonts. If I try to embed the fonts, the text no longer appears. If the fonts are not embedded, they look bad.
Is there a simple, or not so simple solution? I need very clean looking text that does not have double spaces between lines. Here is a bit of the simple code I'm using. This is attached to a button.
Code:
on (press) {
Spec_txt.autoSize = "left";
Spec_txt.border = true;
Spec_txt.multiline = true;
Spec_txt.wordWrap = false;
Spec_txt.html = true;
Spec_txt.condenseWhite = true;
//Spec_txt.embedFonts = true;
myData = new LoadVars();
myData.onLoad = function(){
Spec_txt.htmlText = this.content;
};
myData.load("parafix.txt");
}
I've had to comment out the embedFonts attribute. When it is enabled, the text does not show.
Thanks for the help.
Embedding Fonts Into HTML Enabled Text Area Component Results In No Text Appearing
I've tried this on both Flash's own text area component and Ghostwire's and have had exactly the same result with both.
Basically, I'm using the text area component to load in an HTML document. The component is supposed to display the Tahoma font but it isn't on all computers as Times might show up. So I went ahead and decided to embed the font. Doesn't matter if I place a dynamic text field off the stage and then select the embed fonts option or make a Font Symbol for Tahoma. If I tell the text area to embed fonts I then render out the .swf and the text disappears. Turn off HTML formatting and the text then appears but the formatting of course, is completely lost. Anyone got an idea of a real fix for this? Or at least an explanation?
Help Embedding Fonts In Scrolling Text Box
I successfully used Mr. Patrick Mineault's lovely Actionscript tutorial on "scrolling a text box."
( http://www.flashkit.com/tutorials/In...29/index.shtml )
Problem now is that I can't get my fonts to embed! Is there an idiot-proof way to get fonts to embed into Flash files or is this a special case with the method of displaying text in this tutorial? Help the idiot!

Problem With Aliased Text And Embedding Fonts
I have an input text field. I have set the text to be aliased. I only want numbers to be able to be inputed into the text field so I have embedded the numbers glyphs. When I do this, is changes my resultant text to antialiased. How can I retain the aliasing while having only number as the input?

Text Boxes Created In For-loop End Up Using DIFFERENT Fonts
I have a for-loop that creates movieclips with text boxes inside them, all inside an accordion component. Basically, the code fills the accordion with navigation content.
Anyway, the strange thing is the resulting text fields use TWO different fonts! how is this possible? Even if my TextFormat fails for some reason, shouldn't it then fail for ALL created text fields and not just some (and why does it fail)?
Attach Code
...
var txtFormat:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
txtFormat.align = "left";
txtFormat.font = "Arial";
txtFormat.size = 12;
txtFormat.indent = 0;
txtFormat.bold = false;
txtFormat.color = 0x000000;
for (var o:Number = 0; o<=8; o++) {
for (var i in eval("menu"+o+"_array")) {
// menuACC is an accordion component
menuAcc["menu"+o].createEmptyMovieClip("btn"+i, menuAcc["menu"+o].getNextHighestDepth());
...
menuAcc["menu"+o]["btn"+i].createTextField("lbl", menuAcc["menu"+o]["btn"+i].getNextHighestDepth(), 4, 4, menuAcc["menu"+o]["btn"+i]._width-20, 25);
menuAcc["menu"+o]["btn"+i].lbl.selectable = false;
menuAcc["menu"+o]["btn"+i].lbl.antiAliasType = "advanced";
menuAcc["menu"+o]["btn"+i].lbl.setTextFormat(txtFormat);
menuAcc["menu"+o]["btn"+i].lbl.text = eval("menu"+o+"_array")[i].header;
}

Text Boxes--->fonts--->huge File Size
This is my problem...
I have several files that are simmilar in structure and flow.... one of the has a scrolling text box and this movie is much bigger than the rest (27K compared to 5K). I (think) I've determined it's because the scrolling text box loads the entire font as opposed to only the parts I use.
How would I get around this?
Would it help if I used the loadVariables command and loaded an outside .txt file? If so, I know the text in the .txt file has to start a specific way... does anyone know how?
text="...." ????
or...???
Embedding Non-standard Fonts In HTML Text Areas (Flash MX)
Hello,
I have an HTML text area in Flash MX for which the default font is "Arial Bold" (a font I'm embedding).
Using HTML, I have been able to change the fonts in this text area to Arial, Courier, and Times.
My question is: Using HTML, can I enter other fonts, like "Comics Sans MS", etc.
e.g.
This text is in Arial Bold, but <FONT FACE="Comic Sans MS">this text is in Comic Sans MS</FONT>, and <FONT FACE="Arial">this text is in Arial</FONT>
If not via HTML, is there some other way to accomplish this?

Trouble With Embedding Fonts In A Text Field Created In Actionscript
Hi guys
I've attained soo much help from the Kirupa forums that I thought I get involved.
I’ve been trying to do what should be a simple task and have got to the point where I'm cursing and pulling out my hair.
What I’m doing is creating a dynamic text field, applying a TextFormat to the text field to style it and then add text.
It works except when I flick the embedded font Boolean to true all font disappears. If it's false it runs at the default font.
I have search long and hard on the net and have tried many different version of the code with no success.
Below is a script I wrote just to test embedding as I was hacking up my original code too much and had to separate it.
Code:
var text_field = new TextField();
text_field.text = "the quick brown fox jumped over something that had the letter z in it.";
text_field.width = 250;
text_field.x = 40;
text_field.y = 40;
text_field.selectable = false;
text_field.border = false;
text_field.textColor = 0xCCCCCC;
text_field.autoSize = TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT
//text_field.embedFonts=true;
var text_format = this.text_field.getTextFormat( );
text_format.font = 'ariel font';
text_format.size = 30;
text_field.defaultTextFormat = text_format;
addChild(text_field);
I have embedded the arial font within the library and set it linkages.
I am my wits end. Can someone please help
Dynamic Text Boxes / Resizing Text Boxes
I have a site with a dynamic text box that I have initialized (I'm not sure that that is the correct term) at the beginning with:
myText = new LoadVars();
myText.onLoad = function()
{ textBox_txt.htmlText = this.content;
};
myText.load("text/bio.txt");
stop();
Then I have just used a text box throughout with the same instance name, although sometimes I have it on a new keyframe. I assumed I could just keep loading text into it on different frames with:
stop();
myText.load("text/performances.txt");
This appears to be working, except that sometimes it seems to be confused and the text box on a certain frame has the wrong text in it. Do I have to initialize one for each frame in order for them to display the right code? What could be causing it to load another text file if it's frame action is telling it to load something else? It seems unnecessary to have to re-initialize it for a new text box instance in every new frame, but is that the way it has to be done?
Also, I'm not clear on resizing text boxes. It seems like if I use the width and height numbers to resize this text box on different pages then it changes the size of the text inside, and the scroll bar (the UIScrollbar) is a little squishy looking sometimes. How does this work?
Thanks for any help.
Input Boxes - Then Printing A Frame With Dynamic Boxes With The Input Text In Them...
I have created a flash document with input text... I put the input text with a a variable for each.. I need to print the variables on a seperate page. I used a bounding box inside a movie clip and the printing is working correctly... However it is not reading my input boxes into the dynamic text boxes..
What I did is I have the input boxes on the root timeline........ You input it and go through a few frames and you get the option to print from a button (which is printing 2nd frame of a movie symbol) NOTE: the printing is working correctly using #b.... This is what I have on the 2nd frame of the movie clip for the dynamic text boxes to read the input boxes and place those variables inside of those dynamic text boxes so it will print them as they inputted them...
Here is what I have for my button:
on (press) {
print(_root.Printing, "bmovie")
}
Here is what my variables are on the input boxes which are sitting on the root timeline, each word is a variable:
curious
passionate
accountable
resourceful
commited
teamwork
open
engerizing
External_focus
Clear_thinker
Imagination_courage
Inclusive_leader
Expertise
INSIDE THE PRINTING MOVIE I HAVE A FRAME WITH THIS ACTION ON IT FOR THE DYNAMIC TEXT BOXES TO READ THE INPUT TEXT BOXES:
External_focus1 = _parent.External_focus;
Clear_thinker1 = _parent.Clear_thinker;
Imagination_courage1 = _parent.Imagination_courage;
Inclusive_leader1 = _parent.Inclusive_leader;
Expertise1 = _parent.Expertise;
curious1 = _parent.curious;
passionate1 = _parent.passionate;
accountable1 = _parent.accountable;
resourceful1 = _parent.resourceful;
commited1 = _parent.commited;
teamwork1 = _parent.teamwork;
open1 = _parent.open;
engerizing1 = _parent.engerizing;
FOR SOME REASON IT IS NOT PRINTING MY INPUT BOX INFORMATION IN THE DYNAMIC TEXT BOXES.... DOES ANYONE KNOW WHY?

Dynamic Text Boxes
I have several dynamic text boxes which consist of user input on my site. The user fills them out then clicks on a submit button. I have this all figured out, but what I want to do is clear the text from the boxes after I play the successfully sent message.
Dynamic Text Boxes
ok, this may be confusing.
I have a swf which opens inside another. The one that opens inside the other has a dynamic text box linking to a notepad file. When I change the resolution to a lower setting (to see how it looks) the text box does not appear to scale. The linked text does scale so what happens is some of the text disssapears.
If this makes sense to anyone, please help!
Dynamic Text Boxes
Hi folks.
Im using the dynamic text tutorial in flash kit to load up an exterior text file into some dynamic text boxes.
The following code loads the text into the movie:-

The trouble is that when I embed the dynamic text boxes into a MC and then drag it onto the stage, it stops working
Why oh why?

Dynamic Text Boxes
ok, I got a few small, nigley problems with these damn text boxes and I'm hoping someone else has experienced them and found a solution.
Problem 1: I use two seperate dynamic text boxes each formatted differently (text size and colour) that refer to the same variable from a text file. Both of them have no trouble reading the text, but sometimes the second text box adopts the formatting of the first. very annoying and I've no idea why it does this. I don't want to have to refer to another variable with exactly the same data as the first.
Problem 2: Text wrapping in dynamic text boxes....some of my dynamic text boxes have a few paragraphs of text in. Sometimes, the second or third paragraph of text doesn't wrap but disapears beyond the boundary of the box. If I zoom in and out of the movie, it will often correct itself???
Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Dynamic Text Boxes
Hi All,
I'm working on Flash-MX and want to develop a series of dynamic text boxes. I've a list of items in an Array and i show them with Check boxes, and when user selects items in that list, in next step all those options should be displayed in separate text boxes.
How is it possible? I don't want to use movieclips to create it dynamically.
TIA

Dynamic Text Boxes
Hey all!
I’m creating a game where in order to shoot at enemies you need to collect your ammunition first. I’ve created a dynamic text box where it displays the amount of amo you have collected, and as you shoot…your ammunition decreases.
I would like to make it so that if you have zero ammunition…you don’t have the ability to shoot anymore, but I’m having a little trouble making it work.
Here is my code…what am I doing wrong?
if (amo >= 1){
collect(); //function which allows the character to shoot
}
if (amo <= 0){
walk(); //function which does not allow the character to shoot

Dynamic Text Boxes
I have a problem with dynamic text boxes...
I have a complex but self-contained movie clip that works just fine AS IS when I put it into its own .swf file on its own. BUT, when placed inside another movie clip, it stops working the way I want. I know how dynamic text boxes work, as evidenced by the fact that on its own, this movie clip works just fine. It doesn't reference anything outside of itself.
Can anyone give me some common problems people have for not getting their data to show up in dynamic text boxes? I mean, I have a text box right on screen with actionscript giving the variable a value. It doesn't work unless its in its own movie. Any ideas? (I HATE FLASH)
