FLV Progressive Download Vs. Embed Question
I'm working on a project where we shoot subjects on a green screen, then we key them out, make a FLV, and place them into Flash. This is no problem.
In Flash, when a subject is clicked on, he/she gets up, approaches the screen, begins to speak and a drop down screen appears with supporting information (pictures, text, links, etc.)
Here's my problem. If I set my FLV to Progressive Download my video sometimes gets out of sync with the drop down screen created in Flash (especially when the project is ran from a CD). If I set the FLV to embed, there is no sync issue but my file size is huge.
This is a CD-ROM project so the huge file size isn't a big issue, but some of my videos are pretty long (7-8 minutes).
I'm trying to figure out an alternative way other than making my FLV's embedded in the swf.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Progressive Download
Hi:
I'm new to video and could use some help. I'm not sure if this is a server question or not. I'll post it in general also. have a video clip which plays fine localy but when played from the server (in progressive download mode) it starts and stops? I've tried different buffer times without success. I started with 400kbps (i have dsl and I tested it at 700k) I also tried 150kbps thinking slower data rate would not stop as much ---but it does the same thing? I just had my boss check it, he has cable and it still stops. I can't figure out whos turning off my stream? The website host says its not them same with the isp. Anyone have any ideas how I can figure out where the interuption is? (maybe its local somehow).
Thanks very much

Progressive Download JPG's
Hello Everyone,
My question is this: I have a portfolio page of my website that needs to download over 100 photos (jpgs) I would like them to look good, and so the file sizes are around 75-100 KB. They are downloaded in groups of 3-8 in a swf. into a container in my 'portofolio' swf. page. I would like to have them load progressively somehow so that it wouldn't take so long to see the full swf. after it had completely downloaded. I've seen how the progressive download works for a move clip, but not for a jpg. Also...they have to be able to be downloaded from a swf. inside a swf. Can this be done?? I apologize if this is too confusing....any help would be greatly appreciated!

Progressive Download
I'm looking for a code to play a progessive download inside of a flash template that will, upon click, stop existing music and load automatically, resize from an image on the page to full screen and then exit back to original page starting up music again. I don't have any code right now except the flv file in place.
Does anyone know how to do this or point me in the right direction?
Thanks

Progressive Download With FMS
Hi there People,
How can I playback recorded .FLVs stored in my FMS3 hosting server using progressive download instead of streaming ?

Progressive Download A .swf
I have searched around, and will continue searching for new things, but I was wondering if anyone had tried to progressively download an .swf. I have a little experience with the code that works for progressively downloading an .flv, but my brain has not yet discovered a way to accomplish this. One of the things that i was thinking was that this might be a way to working around embedding the .flv in my main .swf - which is the best way to create a seamless loop. By creating an embedFLV.swf that has the .flv embedded, then progressively download the embedFLV.swf into my main .swf, I might be able to both decrease load time for the main .swf, and also have a seamless loop in my videos.
i appreciate any ideas or help on this issue!!
Progressive Download Of Non-flv?
Hi everyone
Two questions regarding progressive downloaded videos (I'm on Flash 8 BTW) . . .
1. Can Flash only do that with flvs? I have a customer who want to upload videos to his site and stream them through the player. I'm right in saying he'll have to manually encode every video aren't I (there's no flv encoder on his server)?
2. Is it easy / possible to dynamically specify which flv is downloaded based on a GET variable? Example scenario:
/playvideo.php?video=video1 would play video1.flv
/playvideo.php?video=video2 would play video2.flv
/playvideo.php?video=video3 would play video3.flv
. . . etc
Thanks.
Progressive Download
I am very new at this. I am making a movie with three scenes. It will be self playing. The middle scene will have a short video the will progressive load. I used the netconnection code that i found on this site and it worked when i tested scene 2 only. However, when I played the entire movie, it played the audio from scene 2 and the images from scene three.
The video only takes up one frame in scene 2. Is that the problem? Or is there some code missing to tell it to not to play scene three yet?
Thanks
Progressive Download Of FLV
This is a followup question to my post of June 13 06.
I managed to create a progressive download FLV from my movie clip.
This particular FLV is password protected (only specific viewers can access this FLV).
Everything is working except when I test the swf file, I get the following error message: 1000: Unable to make connection to server or to find FLV on server. All of the files related to the FLV are in one folder. Is there some additional actionscript required that needs to be applied to the FLV, and is there some way that I can test the file (other than uploading to a server) in order to ensure it plays properly.
Thanks

Help Seeking A Progressive Download FLV
I have a built a mp3/video player. The scrub bar has a loaded bar that shows the amount that has been downloaded. That load bar has the mouse event that will update the playhead. The reason I chose the loadbar to have the mouse event is so a user cant seek past what is already loaded.
code:
function updateMediaPosition(e:MouseEvent):void
{
pBar.scrubber.width = e.localX * pBar.width;
vPos = e.localX * videoLength;
v.seek(vPos);
}
The code currently works playing locally since it loads right away. If I test it online, e.localX keeps changing until its fully loaded, therefore resulting in invalid seek times. Can anyone shed some light on this? Here is an example:

FLV Progressive Download Player
i got this to work. im just trying to find out how to pause and resume...
before i just embedded the video (because my boss wanted that). after i convinced her that i MUST be able to use an external file, now i need the code to get the position to store, and then start again. i was thinking it probably works similar to the sound object, but i dont know.
any push in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!
Need Examples Of Progressive Download
I'm giving a presentation about the Progressive Download feature at a conference in a couple of weeks, and would like to show off some great examples. My examples are all higher education-related, and honestly not all that visually exciting. I think a little ooo-ing and ahh-ing would be a nice touch.
If you know for certain that progressive download is being used on a site, and don't mind if I link to it as an example, please post the link in this thread. I am especially interested in sites where the name-recognition is high, but open to pretty much anything, as long as it's presentable in a professional setting.
Thanks in advance!
IE Progressive Download Issue
Hi all,
Has anyone run into the following issue. It's fairly random and a real show stopper...
This only appears to happen in IE, both 6 and 7, and in both flashplayer 8 and 9.
I have a youtube like website that lets users watch a number of videos via progressive download. Sometimes in IE, flashplayer basically freezes while the entire FLV is downloaded, then it plays normally. Obviously, it should download the first few seconds then start playing. Not a whole lot of fancy code going on with my player. Just your basic progressive video player. (This problem happens on just a few systems)
In a similar project I noticed that if a large FLV (50+MB) was completely downloaded to temporary internet files in IE, the next time you access the video, IE freezes for several seconds while the large cached file is pulled from cache. (This problem was consistent across several computers and versions of IE)
Not sure if the two scenarios are related but worth noting. Anyone run into something like this or have any ideas? Also, one solution is to force a new file download each visit (by appending date string to video) but this defeats the purpose of caching.
Thanks in advance!
Joe
Progressive Download Question
If I have it correct, progressive download means that the server DL's data to the users computer while the file is being viewed.
If this is right, with NetStream and Video, is it possible to replay a video without redownloading the Video?

Progressive Download Issues
Hello,
I've been fighting with this "progressive download" all night and it's time to break down and ask for help. I have followed several different help files and tutorials on this subject, but obviously I'm missing something.
I started with following this tut:
http://www.communitymx.com/content/article.cfm?page=1&cid=A93B648DECD7574E
I've upload the .FLV file to my server, Opened the Component Inspector and set the url of the flv video. Changed my publish settings to desired settings (Flash Player 7, Bottom up, AS 1.0, Protect from import, Omit Trace, Compress) and put the files on my server. And I get nothing. When I inspect the page further, the flv is not being called at all. I have an example of my project here:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Streaming Vs Progressive Download
I am trying to find an answer to something that I posted to the "Flash Media Server" forum. That seems like the most relevant forum but gets a lot less traffic than the General forum.
Can anyone with streaming / pd experience provide any insight? Please post to the other forum...
I apologize if this is conidered cross-posting, but I have yet to see the preferred method of dealing with topics that fit under multiple forums. I have read lots of complaints of cross-posting, but no solutions. And "post and stick to it" as I have read on occasion is simply lame...
Abort Progressive Download
I am looking for a way to abort the "progressive download" of a flv file.
I am using a .swf to call in the flv source and assigning it to flvplybk through a flashvar. I am using a metadatareceived listener object to load the flashvars from param tags. The flv file is 150Meg. The flv is downloading no matter what occurs client side short of the computer being turned off. Destruction of the object programmatically has no effect. Any attempt by the client browser (IE7 or FF 2.0) to clear the cache results in complete system failure leading to hard reboot.
***Here is the actionscript***
import mx.video.*;
Stage.scaleMode = "noScale";
my_FLVPlybk.contentPath = _level0.myVideo;
my_FLVPlybk.skin = _level0.mySkin;
my_FLVPlybk.autoPlay = false;
var listenerObject:Object = new Object();
listenerObject.metadataReceived = function(eventObject:Object):Void {
my_FLVPlybk.width = _level0.myWidth;
my_FLVPlybk.height = _level0.myHeight;
my_FLVPlybk.skinAutoHide = false;
Stage.align = "TL";
Stage.width = _level0.myWidth;
Stage.height = _level0.myHeight;
}
my_FLVPlybk.addEventListener("metadataReceived", listenerObject);

Progressive Download Not Working
This so weird. I have encoded many .mov and .avi videos using Flash Video Encoder with On2 VP6. I then upload the .flv to a webserver. I import the video selecting progressive download. I point the content path to the absolute url on the webserver , publish the project, upload the .swf and voila! enjoy a progressive download.
HOWEVER, now I have a file that insists on downloading completely before it can be played. Here is a link to a page containing 2 videos. Both were created using the exact same process. One downloads progressively, the other doesn't. http://www.pgtest.photonicsg.com/pmkt/podcasts/03page.htm The source files for both videos were Quicktime videos compressed the h264 codec.
Any ideas why this is happening?
Progressive Download Freeze Up

Progressive Download And Sound
Hi. I've created a flash file with two buttons. One to play a sound and one to stop a sound. It loads in an mp3 using SWFObject. Thats all fine and it plays. But it plays fine in Firefox, but when I view it in IE the file sounds like the chipmonks are talking. Can anyone give me an idea as to why this is happening?

Progressive Download Issue
I asked this before and got no reply. Perhaps I wasn't being clear. I have a
flash file that is an flv video player. Presently it serves up 2 videos of
about 18mb each. I used the flv playback component to create the player and
they are served up using progressive download.
The problem is that the download seems to take over the browser and freezes
the page until the download is complete. If the user decides they want to
move on to another page before the download has finished, they must use the
back button as none of the page links will work until the video downloads
have completed. Is there any way in flv playback actionscript to allow for
an interruption of the progressive download if the user clicks on a link in
the page while the download is in progress?
Thanks

FLV Progressive Download SeekNavCue
Hello! I have been working on this issue for a couple days now and cannot seem to find the resolution. I have a flash movie that includes three FLV files that are progressively downloaded. I have no problems playing them, but when I get to a certain point in one, I want to switch to the other, but start the second FLV at a certain cue point. The test works when I play from my hard drive, but Since the files are progressive download, they don't jump to the correct cue point when viewed online. Any suggestions on what I should try next? My code for the FLV switch is below:
This is on the first frame (checks to see if the root var is set to 1, if not then it should jump to a specific point in the FLV):
import mx.video.FLVPlayback;
var pam_vid:FLVPlayback;
if (_root.link == 1) {
pam_vid.play();
}
if (_root.link == 2) {
pam_vid.seekToNavCuePoint(repeatStory);
pam_vid.play();
}
This script is put on the last frame (detects when the video file is done playing, then jumps to frame 1 and checks the root var):
import mx.video.FLVPlayback;
stop();
//
var listenerObject:Object = new Object();
pam_back.addEventListener("cuePoint",listenerObject);
listenerObject.cuePoint = function(infoObject:Object):Void {
if(infoObject.info.name == "cue2"){
trace("cue2");
_root.link = 2;
gotoAndPlay(1);
}
}
//
thanks,
Christy
Streaming Vs Progressive Download
Has anyone evaluated the performance difference between the 2 delivery methods? I believe I understand the differences between the 2, and am trying to decide whether streaming is "worth it".
I don't need seeking, and I don't care whether the content (FLV) is cached. Initially I thought PD would be my choice. However, after reading:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/flv_download.html
3 of the listed "advantages" stand out. Specifically:
quote:
1. Deliver long files—for example, video clips over 10 minutes long
2. Deliver video to many viewers—for example, a hundred or more simultaneous viewers
3. Have advanced features such as bandwidth detection or quality-of-service monitoring for delivering the best possible experience
In my project:
1. Some of the videos I have are long (over 10 minutes). Why is streaming better for long videos?
2. I don't know how many simultaneous users I will have. Let's say that it is a hundred or more. Why is streaming better? I will be using a major "streaming media" provider which will do either FCS or HTTP. Since they have major amounts of bandwidth, won't either method support lots and lots of simultaneous users? Anyone have real world numbers on how many simultaneous streams/PD connections can be supported on a given server?
3. The experience watching these videos (good looking video and smooth playback) are the MOST important aspect. The compression is the same regardless of which delivery method is used, so "image quality" should be the same, right? As far as smooth playback goes, has anyone done practical tests that say for "x" number of people simultaneously accessing a server, performance problems occurred "y" percent of the time using the 2 delivery methods?
I'm hoping better to understand from a PRACTICAL and FACTUAL standpoint why I should choose streaming. Or is the only thing I have to go on the "theoretical"? I'm also a bit suspicous that much of what I have read is simply marketing hype.
I would really appreciate any advice or insight, especially from people that use both methods.

.flv's And Streaming Progressive Download
i'm new to using video in flash. I've found lots of seemingly great info for using progressive download. It seems that all of the examples require that the .flv files be in the same directory as the .swf file. Then you make a general local connection to the web _root using something like this:
Code:
my_nc.connect(null);
from what I can tell the "null" just causes the netConnection to connect to the local _root.
what do I do if my .flv's are in a directory a few levels down?
/media/video/default.flv
can you use progressive download like that? or do you need to have a streaming server or streaming capability on your server to specify an URL?
thanks for any input!
I Have A 3mb Flv File, And I Want To Do A Progressive Download....but...
it is stuttering big time on playback. And i'm thinking that even with a long buffering period...a file of this size just won't play smoothly within a reasonable amount of time.
What do you suggest I do with it? I was thinking of buying one of those flv components.
What size of an flv is reasonable for a progressive download?
Thanks.
FLV Progressive Download Progress Bar
Hi guys,
I am building a video player using NetStream, NetConnection and the Video class. I have got the pause, play, stop and volume control sorted.
I'd like to know how one goes about building a download progress bar as the FLV downloads progressively.
I have looked at the VideoProgressEvent class, but that doesn't seem to work with the Video class.
Any ideas appreciated.

Progressive Download On Swfs
Hey everyone. here's my problem. I have a swf with just a jpg as the background and a simple animation. I simply want the swf to start playing and do a progressive download and continue to play. With the jpg it won't start playing until the jpg is finish downloading. Without it will start playing and downloading at the same time. I am using Event.INIT to know when the swf is loaded enough to play. Any idea why it won't 'stream' with the image?

FLV Broken Progressive Download
Not really sure if this is a Flash question or a server admin question, but anyway...
I have a Flash FLV video player which uses progressive download. When I use it on my sites, I can load part of a video, leave the page and when I come back the loading picks up from the same place.
However some people who use the player on their sites report that loading always returns to 0% after leaving or refreshing the page. I have visited such a page and can confirm this.
I'm guessing this could be related to the way the server is configured to resume broken downloads, but I really am just guessing. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Stuttering Flv Progressive Download
Hi all
I have uploaded a flv to a remote server, flashed an swf containing a mediadisplay instance to progressively download the flv.
The flv is was encoded from mpg with Riva with a bitrate of 360, framerate of 25 and sound with bitrate at 56 and 22050 Hz mono. The video size is 320x240 and approx 1min 30sec long. There is only on frame within the swf. I am testing on a 512Kb connection(running at 460Kb).
I have managed to put a listener on the progressive download and to add a delay of n seconds using the listener and setInterval() to try to buffer the vid before actually starting to play the vid, however it still stutters even with a 10 second interval.
The video is quite busy at the beginning with someone talking and walking up an elaborate staircase with a very busy carpet design could this add the stuttering effect. When the vid as totally cached it runs without stuttering. I have tried putting the bit rate down to 96 and frame rate down to 15 but stuttering still occurs and the quality of the vid is crap.
I have done a few flv vids and theses seem to work ok although on stutters at the beginning but then catches up and works fine.
I have read that the CPU can struggle with decoding and downloading at the same time.
My comp is using a Celeron 2.4Ghz proc, 512 MB RAM, 80 Gig HDD, 512Kb broadband connection, onboard graphics 32MB.
Any advice or help is welcome.
TIA

Progressive Download Issue
Hi
I have managed to get a progressive download movie to work locally but when I publish it on my web server the everything appears except the movie itself.
The process I followed was:
Imported a movie to the stage which created my flv file for me in the same directory as the swf and html page.
I then uploaded the html file, swf and flv to the same directory as they sit in on my machine.
Is there anything else I should be doing? Is there anything that has to be installed on the web server in order for it to work?
I have heard that you have to update the url in the component. Although is this necessary if the file reside in the same directory?
I have tried entering the url to the web server in the to component url field anyway and it just says that it cannot load the flv.
Thanking you in advance for any light you can shed on the matter.

Progressive Download Crash
Hello,
For the past month I have been making a MP3/FLV player at work. My problem is when viewing progressively downloaded FLV files. I have no problems while viewing the file locally but when it is played off of our web server it crashes on SOME computers.
It says that flash9b.ocx has a problem and IE/Firefox closes.
Originally, it crashed on my computer as well but after some time, it stopped crashing on my computer. I cannot seem to find what is causing this problem, all I know is it always crashes on these computers once it has downloaded 98-99% of the file.
If anyone could help I would appreciate it,
