Flash :: Feathered Masks?

Feathered Masks?
Hi all,

I really want to know how to do a feathered mask in flash. I am sure it is possible, but can't find any examples of what i mean.

So that when a movie passes out of the masked area it fades away instead of being cut off with A sharp edge.

Is there a way to make a feathered mask (a mask with a soft edge) so that something can look like it's kind of fading into the background? I tried softening the edges of a fill then turning it into a mask, but I got nothin'. This would really help make my stuff look better, so if anyone has any input, please indulge.

The only way I can get the affect I want is to create it in photoshop and import it.

Gradient/feathered Masks?
Newbie to this forum. I have two images and would like to create a amsk that moves with the mouse and reveals the lower layer image through the top layer one. I would prefer to do this using a feathered shape rather than a sharp edged one. Is there any way to accomplish this? A tutorial somewhere or something would be fine, haven't been able to find anything yet.

Feathered/gradient Masks In Flash?
is it possible to create a mask that has a feathered edge as opposed to a hard edge? i know its possible to 'fake' the effect if the masked object is moving across a solid color, but i need it to work between two photographs. essentially, i have two superimposed photographs, where the one of top is moving across a static one beneath it. i want the animated photograph to have a 'blurred' edge, as it moves across the image, but can't figure out if this is possible in flash using masks, or if i have to do alot of pre-production in photoshop. any ideas?

Animated Masks? (with Feathered Edges)
I'm wondering if anyone can help me. I'm setting up an interface, and some content boxes are slowly revealed by a mask once the animation runs. I decided I didn't want just straight lines, so went to edit the Movie Clip with mask applied. I basically have a rectangle which expands and reveals the entire content area. Only, when I edited the shape (which is grouped in the mc's timeline) to add a stroke and the hand-drawn stroke style, but when I preview it, the edge of the mask is as straight as ever. Is there a good way to create a mask with uneven edges? Also, on the subject of feathered masks, how are they done? Is it just a matter of a mask and a layer over that with a gradient on it (which gives the illusion of being part of the mask)?

EDIT: Here's a quote which confirmed my suspicions:

Hi I'm new to flash and so far I love it!

Anyways I have this question. I'm trying to create a feathered border around my flash.

It's a mpeg I imported, but I've been lost how to create that border in flash. I tried creating a feathered gif in photoshop and importing it in, but it looked horrid.

Is it not possible to feather and soften the edges of an image on a transparent background in PS3, and then import it to Flash as it looks? I have done this with PNG24 and Flash still kills the edge to where it is hardened with no feather. Please advise.

Feathered Shadows In Flash 5, Please Help...
Is there any way that I can create shadows with a feathered effect around the edges (probably using alpha).

I've tried using gradients from a dark centre and ending in the background colour, but I need something that would work over various background colours.

Any ideas would be great.

Not sure exactly why I don't. I mean the alpha goes from 1 to 0 so on the sides it should have a 0 alpha right? I mean it's odd that it doesn't. Anything seem wrong? I've been looking at the CS3 docs and they don't seem to talk about this kind of thing much:

¿How To Enlarge Masks On Rollover While Shrinking Other Nearby Masks?
Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to acheive a similar effect to the main 4 buttons, at this site, http://www.nationalgeographic.com/forcesofnature/

There is a grid of 4 rectangles, each quadrant is a mask/button. When you rollover one quadrant, the mask/button enlarges, and the other 3 mask/buttons shrink. This all happens inside of the fixed-size grid.

Can anybody lead me in the direction of a tutorial or let me know the name of the technique so I can search out help resources on my own?

Soft / Feathered Mask Ideas
Hello everyone,

I am working on a site with a scrolling series of large images. I need to mask them, and the designer wants a feathered or soft mask. The images scroll using a standard scrolling script, and I already have to have two layers being scripted to move at the same time because the mask reveals and hides a version of the images with photoshop effects (like moving behind an xray screen type of set up).

I searched the forums here and while I found one suggestion for creating a soft mask like effect, it requires multiple layers with separate masks of slightly decreasing size masking images of increasing alpha percentages. Therefore I would have to be moving seven layers or so of large images at once (the effect works well, but not with such big jpgs moving around...barely scrolls anymore).

It would be great if anyone has a workaround they have found or some insight... maybe I'm wrong that you can't have a feathered mask... who knows? If you think there is no other solution than what I've tried you could let me know to so I can report back to the designer.

"Feathered" Mask
I am creating an effect in Flash that requires an object to be masked. To enhance the effect, I want the edges of the mask to be (using a Photoshop term here) "feathered" (soft - not hard edged). I know this is possible, but have been unsuccessful in creating it. I've tried creating a mask in Flash and softening the edges but that still gives me a hard edged mask upon playback. What program - ie Photoshop, Fireworks, Flash, etc. - would I create the mask in? What format would I export to? Is there something special that I need to do to import to Flash and maintain the integrity of the soft edges on playback? I've tried all formats that I can think of to no avail.

I know you cant drag a mask directly. I have read through this,

tutorial on how to fake the dragging of a mask. This is fine however it only allows for movement in one direction at a time.

I remember seeing a human body where you move the mouse and reveal the skeleton. How was this done?

Also....I tried moving a mask through scripting, this doesn't work either....

Is it posible to make a mask a custom cursor, i've tried to do it, but I can't. i want to make like a flashlight effect with the mouse, but i can't do it.
I have the layer where the circle (the flashlight) is. The circle is a movieclip, so in the actions for it I put the traditional on movieclip load hide mouse start drag flashlight, but it doesn't work.

OK - I'm in a Flash class at school. I understand most of the masking stuff BUT --
You know the effect where it looks like a flashlight or spotlight kinda thing? Where the background is dark and then the mask part runs over it and it goes light or whatever? You know what I'm talking about? If you do - please help! I don't know how in teh world to do that.

Masks In MX
Is there a way to dynamically create a mask layer, what goes inside that layer and what it is masking?

Say, a button is hit, and a mask layer is created with a movie clip in that layer (the movie clip has a rectangle in it), and it is masking an image. So it would be slowly revealing the image beneath it.

is this possible? if not, what may be the best way to try to achieve this same effect?

any help would be much appreciated.

I am having trouble with the mask I created. My mask looks great and works fine in the program editing window, but when I publish it or test the movie, it as if their is no mask at all? What am I doing wrong. Is there some setting I don't know about? Thanks...

Masks Or No Masks?
I am using a movie clip of a pencil and wanting it to appear to draw a circle. I thought some combination of a mask and motion guide might be employed but I'm not coming up with a working solution.

I'm not looking for actual interactive actionscripting, just a simple motion tween along a path that leaves in its wake the line of the path. Can anyone give me a heads up on how i might work this out? Thanks in advance,

First off, thanks for all the help I've recieved on here. My site is coming along good. Have a quick question though. On my site I have a nav bar on the right and some clickable links on the right and even a few on the main page in the middle. When you click a button on the nav bar it pops open a window. Everything works fine except I was wondering if there is a way to cover those clickable links that are under my popup window so that they are not active anymore. Right now you can seemingly click on open space and go to a site because your actuallly clicking on a big picture that is under my popup window that is actually a button.

i was wondering if you could mask an image and somehow change its hue. when you change the tint, it changes the blacks and the whites also. if you change the hue... you can just affect the colour without touching the blacks and whites

I have on one masked layer a picture. Over this layer, I have placed a shape which moves across the stage. This layer is the MASK layer.

I would like to have more shapes to move across the stage which would also be of MASK type but can only have one working...

How can you have multiple shapes that are motion tweened and on different layers act as masks?

Hi all

Why don't masks containing multiple objects work?

If I have on my mask layer a graphic symbol containing several animated shapes, only one will be used at a time as the mask.

is there a way to work arround this without making a seperate mask for each object?

Ok, I'm new to this flash stuff. All I am trying to do is creat a mask for a text box so it looks like it fades in. When I jump around on the time line, everything looks good, but when I export the .fla, all I can see is the rectangle I made as the maskee fade in. I put the text on the top and the rectangle on the bottom for creating the mask. When I swap the two, I get a blank screen on the export file. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong or know of a better way of making a text box fade in without having to convert it to a symbol?

Got a question about masks. I have a graphic of the United States with Alaska and Hawaii. I created a mask around the main part so the background will show. I had to create separate mask layers for Hawaii and Alaska. However, I was wondering if I could create 2 masks on the same layer. If so, how? Thanks

alright alright. I know i may be asking too many things but its just that I'm a in newb in flash :P hehehe now on to the question.

i have a component text input and in it the user will put a value, for exemple he puts a value like this: "100000,00".
And i want to use a mask(or something else if you have any ideias, im open for them ) to dynamically change it to something like this: "100.000,00" at the time he's writing it

Is there any reason why certain objects in flash will not make a mask? I made a rounded rectangle and added a couple of lines over and then grouped it. I am trying to make a mask out of this grouped object but it is not working?? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
