Flash :: Flash CD-ROM Advice

Some Advice (actually A Lot Of Advice) On Navigating My Web Site
My web Site consists of 1 large flash movie that is being used as a template for the site as a whole. Different 'pages' in the site will consist of the same movie...different colour and content.
ie
Page1 = template/ red/ content A
Page2 = template/ blue/ content B etc etc

My problem is with navigation ( and not knowing enougth about flash )

Choice 1. use traditional hltm with frames. navigation buttons on the left frame call up the a url to load the new flash template.

Problem. Can the call command to load, the url, also navigate to a certain frame within the template?

Choice 2 Make the different pages into different scenes within the same movie.

2A Can the navigation buttons be in a different frame ( web page frame as opposed to a flash frame) and if they can how do I navigate
,or can I navigate as below

Button 1 = load url= www.blah/blah/blah gotoandplay= frame 40

2B the navigation button are in the main movie ( template ) how do I tell it to go to,

button1= go to scene2 frame 30 and play

Lastly!! If I go down the scenes route does flash load the whole movie before it starts playing, this would not be acceptable due to download times, or can it be made to;

1 Load the next scene when it is requested
even better
2 Be made to load the other scenes while the user is looking at the first scene

Flash Advice Please
Howdy!

Im currently putting together my major project in an effort to complete my degree and I have run into the following problems with respect to flash, I am hoping some of you guys might be able to point me in the right direction as to what area of actionscript I need to look at.
Oh, and Im using Flash MX 2004

1. i have created a digital clock. Which is consistent with all game screens. There are 5 gaming puzzles to solve with a minute for each, I have added each secont onto a frame within a movie clip. The first time you try the puzzle i want users to have a minute, the second time if they fail, I need the framerate to go slower so users have more time.

2. A section has a series of eyes opening an closing, I have set them up as a movie clip withn a button, the over state closes the eye. Here I want users to hit the eyes 10 times and on the 10th hit the eye will stay closed. it has been mentioned to me I may need to look at variables here, can anyone expand on this or confirm variables would be the way to go?

3. This is a simple one! Ive searched the net for tutorials on how to create a cigarette smoking in an ashtray but cant seem to find one that looks effective, any suggestions?

4. I have a jigsaw based game, and have a series of small puzzle piesces, when you drag the piese into the correct target area I want the small piesce to swap with the larger version and snap to place.

I'd really appreciate if any of you guys could point us in the right direction on any of these aspects

I can attach some of the files if anyone would have the time to take a quick look at them

New To Flash MX And Need Some Advice.
Hey guys I have just started using Flash MX about 2 days ago. So far I've learned many of the very basic things that I can do with it through an online tutorial but that's it.
I have decided to learn Flash because I want to be able to use it in webpages to do things such as make drop down menus, intros, and all the other cool stuff you can do for your website.
Now my question was, what is the best way to go about learning Flash MX in depth so I can go about doing these things. Is it better to learn from a book or to just keep checking out online tutorials. Also, I was wondering if anyone recommends a certain book that can teach me these things that i want to do more in depth.

..."I'd like The Tummy Train page to include an element of interactivity.
The Tummy Train is a frieze which children use to learn about healthy eating
habits. The children place food items into relevant carriages. Therefore
I'd like browsers to be able to drag and drop food items on to the carriages
in the same way. " (art work supplied)

This is probably a custom Flash job and would be totally outside my
expertise.
I would have to sub contract this.
I know that folk are reluctant to quote prices here but it would help if I
had a very rough idea.

Flash Advice
I hope somebody maybe able to give me some advice on this. I recently bought a new laptop with windows vista premium already installed. everything runs fine on it except when i go onto a site that use flash technology such as youtube. When i go to youtube i can search for a video and then click on the link to watch it. i then get a message that says "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Macromedia's Flash Player" and there is a link directing me to this site to download flash player. I click on the link to download flash player and get the "flash player installed successfully" box. But when i go back to youtbue or any other flash site i get the same thing. Is it something i am doing wrong or is it a technology clash with vista? ny help or advice would be gratefully recieved :o)

New To Flash, Looking For Advice
I am pretty new to flash, I play around with it here and there and can learn things pretty quickly. The current project I'm working to get going is to show 2 images and a slide control that when the slide control is far left image A's opacity is 100% and image B is 0% vis versa for slide controls right.

I am looking for advice on how to go about getting this done. I have put 2 images on 2 layers and made opposite tween opacities but unsure how to impliment user control into it. Any help would be appreciated.

Advice For Flash 4 To 5 Tutorails
Hello all again.
I think my learning in flash is going well, I just get a little confused now and then.

You may think I am being rude and lazy, but tbh I am one of them people who find it hard to take things in and learn something fastly :L).

But I am reading the great Flashkit Starter Tuts, and the main one at moment is BABY for flash or something.
Its based on Flash 4.. But I am using Flash 5. All I am saying is I get little lost and confued if it says goto WINDOW/FRAMES/TRANSFORM
Or something like that and many more, I can not find and takes me about 10 minutes to find it the Flash 5 way.

All I am asking is there any BABY tutorails based on Flash 5 please?
Flash is very fun and exciting and hopefully one day I be able to make a web site in it and movies and so forth.

Some Flash Advice Needed
I was wondering what would be the best way to go about setting up a way to when you click on a button for it to bring in a new object on stage with more options (as most buttons on websites do)

Should I load an external swf file using an empty clip?
Should I make a new scene?
Or any other way that I am over looking.

Also is there a way to have a sound loop playing in the background continously even if scene's are switched?

Flash Navigation Advice
Howdy,
If you where to build a website that ecompassed flash navigation that would stay on everypage how would you go about building it? The flash navigation would change the content of the page when a button pushed. I have tried doing it by putting the flash navigation in a top frame and the content in the bottome frame... but people are telling me I should not use frames. How would you people assemble such a site? I have built one with frames, but the bottom frame covers up the top frame (the menu) when the browser window is resized. I have tried using iframe for my menu, but it is not supported by netscape 3 and 4... so i dont want to lose those users. Any advice is welcome.

Advice On Converting This To Flash....
Hi, I have just recently purchased flash MX and i'm finding it hard to use. I've used programs like swish before and produced some quite good results with it.

My site is at www.infiniteonline.tk and i was thinking of maybe turning the layout into a flash site and adding some effects. Do you have any advice on what effects to use or what to add? And how i can do these. The site is fairly new so i hope u like the design, sorry there isnt much bt i havent decided what to do yet.

(Need Advice) Flash Presentation On CD

Situation: Ive developed this training course/presentation that I will be presenting to potential buyers. We will be showing them the presentation and have the intent of leaving them a copy behind on a CD.
Dilemma: I have several swf's (video, sound, other external files such as PDF's and .DOC's) all linked to my main presentation file, using the loadMovie - get URL command... BUT, they only work with a predetermined file path name (in the main presentation file). Which leaves me the dilemma of once the specified path is broken (from moving the files from one location to another), the linked files will no longer work.
Question: What methods are available to deliver the customer the neccessary files easily accessable from one CD-Rom using Flash MX (Pro)? Is there a way to target the relative path directly to the end users CD drive? Even if theyre not to be removed - just viewed from the CD standalone?
Question: To deliver Flash across multiple platforms (which may or may not have the player installed) whats available for solutions regarding an installation that would install the Flash Player as well as create a directory for all attaching files all in one installation process? Is Flash even capable of providing this need?

If anyone with experience regarding these issues could drop some knowledge and shed some light on them, Id appreciate it.

I can't find a movie that will contain at least 2 layers of images (on scrolls faster than other), dont go throught whole 360 but point to point and have minimal lags (I don't know how to say it in english).

Hello, I want to learn to make games in Flash. I made some simple games, but they are far from what I wanted. So, can you give me some advice which books are good and not too expensive? I don't need tutorials about drawing, vectors, layers and other paint stuff. Just actionscripting.

I am working on a site where each page is nothing but a flash movie. What I mean is that each page is a .swf with dimensions of 1000 X 700 pixels. The html pages will be nothing but a centered movie. My question is : Should I publish an html page with each movie, Or should I have one html page that plays each movie. I hope you understand the dilemma I face.

Need Advice For Flash Video
Hello all!

I would like to use Flash for:
1. small video clips (30 seconds)
2. audio only clips (30 seconds up to 30 minutes)
What is the best method to accomplish this? I have Flash mx 2004, and use Dreamweaver. I also am using Mac OSX.
Does my version of Flash cover all I need? Do I need any other applications? Would that Macromedia Video kit help?

I Need Some Expert Flash Advice...
I need some advice...

Here's the thing... I've been learning flash for over a year now... and I'm still learning of course... no where near calling myself intermediate... or advanced... but I know my way around actionscript... whatever...

Well here's the thing... I just made my first "paid" website... it isn't all up yet, and it definatley isn't the greatest website, but this is what the guy wanted... and this is the limit of what I could do... so heres the address... http://www.jandjmachineproducts.com ... well... i'm not sure if you noticed when visiting it, but I didn't take into account the screen resolution.

I created the website in 1280 by 1024... and after I was done I read a lot of Flash designers say it is best to use 1024 by 768 (because the majority of computer users use this resolution)

Well, The guy I created the website for, he still uses AOL (sorry for any AOL users) and called his computer an IBM compatible (which my friend and I took as the equivalent of a Commodore 64 haha) so therefore I believe he uses 800 X 600.

When the guy visited my friend's work, he mentioned how the website looked better on my friends computer than it did on his... which made us really think he uses 800 by 600, and I'm pretty sure he doesn't even know what screen resolution is...

Well, Long story short... The advice I need is this...

"What should I do in the situation... should I remake the website in 800 by 600 to please his needs? should I re-make it in 1024 by 768 to please most people's needs... or should I make it look the best by using the screen resolution of my choice...???"

and on top of that... If I should re-make them... is their any easy way to go about telling a computer which resolution .swf to load? I know there is a JAVA redirect or something... but I read that that redirect doesnt look all that great... and loads pretty weird sometimes...

I already tried to Publish the swf with Match Movie set to 100%... but it just doesnt look good when the resolution is shrunk...

This is driving my insane... Is this the price for making total flash websites (i dislike HTML... more like hate HTML), or is this the price for being a web designer period?

I'm embarking on a new project and I need some help figuring out how to proceed. I'm attaching a (redacted) version of one of the pages designed by the designer, and I'm hoping someone could take a look at it and let me know if they think this is a project for Flash or HTML/frames?

Please note, for the home page of the site I'm thinking of doing a top and bottom frame in HTML and then the middle section in Flash. But for this particular page it looks like a job for FRAMES? But not sure if Frames are a bad idea these days... Does this look like it could be done easily in Flash?

I'm no guru but I've got 5 years of beginner/basic (Flash 4-5, not that familiar with MX 2004 though that's what I'm working with) experience.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Advice On Flash Detection
Hello all.

Just wanted a bit of advice really. Want to know what the best option is if I want a sniffer for a site. I know my way around action script and I'm more than happy to learn how to build one, but I noticed there is a Flash Player detection kit on the macromedia site. Is it any good, and if not, can anyone point me in the direction of a good tutorial?

Flash Upgrade Advice Please
Hi all.

I currently own Flash 3 and Flash MX upgrade, but I have never bothered to register these products. Just wondered if anyone knows what the score is if I wanted to upgrade to the latest version now Adobe own Flash. Can I register these with Adobe and then upgrade. Just have my doubts about Adobe letting me register the version 3, which shouldn't have been a problem if Macromedia where still in control.

Has anyone had any experience of registering earlier versions of Flash with Adobe.

Hello, I'm just starting my education into Flash. I am using Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and have created several ASP.NET 2.0 AJAX Enabled web sites collecting Fisheries related data from users. I will be starting another solution in the near future to collect Angler related data from users. Need Your Advice On Flash Or Flex
On next month I will incharge of web-based app project that:

1) - Read layers of PSD file (photoshop) then create banner of each layer.
- Display images in categories.
- Drage and drop image into banner (gif file) frame.
- rotate, resize text and image inside that banner.

2) - insert flash file (.fla?) to DB.
- load that flash files into web GUI
- edit text and image inside that flash file.
- save back to DB.

So my questions are:
- what tool I should use? flash? or flex? or both? or ajax with php? and why?
- about "insert flash file (.fla?) to DB", this web app is for intranet use only, and size of flash file is less then 300kb. So should I need to pay attention on performance etc?
- especially edit text and image inside flash file (fla?), flash or flex is better to use? why?

I use flash for alot of web banners etc. I can understand actions script enough to use it but not to write it. However I want to learn it and I figured the best way to do is to actually do a site. Ive done a couple of basic tutorials that take you to idfferent portions of the timeline etc.

Becoming Certified In Flash Advice Please...
Hope this is the right forum for this, apologies if it's not.

It's my (within) 2 year plan to become a certified professional in Flash. Currently I work full time developing flash for e-learning and am also a degree qualified designer. After using Flash (in mostly the wrong code-all-over-the-place ways) for around 5 years, earlier in the year I completed the official Adobe Actionscript 2 training. I'm now learning more, fast, and am able to turn over better work, faster – to the point where my employer is really noticing.

What I'd like is your opinions on the value of the certification, particularly in terms of my value to my employer who will be paying for working toward this. I can imagine, although I'd appreciate some testimony.

Further, at the moment it is only AS2 that I am familiar with, is it feasible at this stage to become certified in AS2 (ie Flash 8) or is the only option with Flash CS3 / AS3. While using CS3, I am yet to delve into AS3. I certainly plan to, but I am obviously further along the AS2 path at the moment.

Advice On A Flash CD Project

I'm starting on a flash project that I think will be pretty cool, but need some advice on the best way to execute it.

A quick overview:
* it will be delivered on CD ROM
* functionally, it will need to capture and store some user data (such as name, address, etc - kind of standard user info)
* it will also need to import CAD graphics - specifically building blueprints, most likely in a format called "DWG"
* a user will need to upload photos, from external sources not on the CD, and store them where this flash app can find them (using a standard Window "find" window)
* the app will also need to retrieve those stored photos from the folder where they are stored, display them as a group on a screen and offer the option to click and enlarge a particular photo
* once the photo is enlarged, a user will be able to click through all the photos from that folder, print anyone they want or delete any one they want

So, what I need advice on is:
* what are my options for writing data out to a user's hard drive (like the name, address, etc.)? I know there are security restrictions - everything I've found is about accessing from the web - this will be local, off a CD - not sure what the differences/limitations are
* what formats of graphics can flash import? Anyone know of any add ons/third party software that can import .dwg format (this is an AutoDesk AutoCAD format)? Another possible import format is PDF - can Flash import this?
* I assume that flash can access a Windows "upload" window functionality. The app would then need to write the photos to a user's hard drive, which I assume has the same security issues as my first point above. Any advice on this?
* the app will also need to be able to point towards the content of a folder on a user's hard drive, read the list of the contents, turn that into an array, then access the files in that array and display them

I think that is it. I know this is a lot, and I am not asking one to solve these issues for me, but if you could point me to any resources on any of the above, it would be greatly appreciated.

A little background: I am new to the whole SOAP/WebServices thing. Spent the last week playing around with SOAP in Python, PHP and Javascript etc. to see if I understood it all. We still use Flash 8 / AS 2.0 here at the studio and don't want to change to Flash CS3 right before a critical project.

We have been given a project where we will need to communicate with a number of .NET WebServices using SOAP. I don't seem to be able to find any relevant documentation about doing this. Specifically things like parsing WSDL files inside of Flash 8. All the websites I found referenced Flex or were from 2003 and Flash MX. This has me a little worried and makes me wonder: is everyone is using some other tool apart from Flash 8 to communicate with WebServices?

I understand I can manually forge my own SOAP packets and parse the WSDL files myself but there will be a lot of communication and it would be nice if it was all standardized.

What would everyone here recommend we do?

Hi there,

Do you have any general recommendations for a Flash newbie?

For example: Is it ok to have frame 1 and 2 for the preloader and once the bytes are loaded just progress to frame 3 where the content starts? How can reduce file size and stuff like this? Is there anything to watch out for when I export the whole thing to use in my webpage? Would be great to receive some general feedback. Working on my first Flash file.

Your Advice On Flash Capabilities
Before investing heavily in money and time, I would like to have some advice. Here is what I would like to do. I would like to create a "slide show" that can be controlled by the user. Each "slide" would have moving elements such as animated backgrounds, animated text and video clips. Say the application had 20 "slides". Could this flash be downloaded from a server to several users? Could the flash application be burned onto a DVD or CD so that it is playable and controlable in a standard DV player (not a computer.) I don't want to know how to do it, I just want to know if it is possible. Thanks for your comments and advice in advance.

Need Advice On My Flash Website
Hi I have created a website for my construction company with Flash. www.mattwillbuild.com All has been working well but i need to continue adding pictures. every time I do the file takes longer and longer to publish and if I or the user don't wait long enough the site has multiple problems with the navigation. What I need is some tips on how to save space without losing too much of my picture quality. It is somewhat important for this particular site. Is there another method I could use for this site? Was it a bad idea to put the entire site into a single SWF file? How can I easily correct that now? Any advice would be much appreciated, I haven't found much info on this in my searches. Need Advice...DHTML On TOP Of Flash?
Hello... I have a web page with some specified layers using <DIV> tags, and a Flash movie. However the Flash movie always resides on TOP of any other layering. Is there a way to control this kind of layering? I want the <DIV> layers to be on TOP of the Flash presentation. Can the Flash movie be embedded in a <DIV> layer? Help. Bob

Flash Paper Advice
Hi... A friend of mine wants to produce a document online, he's shown me a few examples where the pages turn etc. I've seen the page turn example also, but I feel like Flash Paper would do the job better as it has built in search functions etc. Wanted advice from people who have had expereince in this area... I have downloaded some flash maker software and they are not up to speed.
slideshw maker and sothink swf..

I did go thru the FAQ's here and many sites.

All I want is a script to:
make 2 or images in transition fade in fade out (tween) and add some fade in out fade out text...

strangely, Slideshowmaker had images that fade in fade out but no animated text..
sothink had the fade-in fade-out of text in various formats but not the image fade-in fade-out feature.. who woulda' thought.

I do have Macromedia Flash player 8.

BTW, I found a supposedly great tutorial on Flash 8 for what I wanted then there's a step or button in my flash 8 that does not do what they have. the rectangle button upon clicking and cursos becomes a "+" sign in state area is not true.

So any recommendations on a moderately priced less than $25 easy to use program would help me a lot. or tutorials, NO Video tutorials...though..I can read well.

ohh..and prefer one where upon accessing the site there not a loading feature there for 5 seconds or longer.

Advice On The Benefits Of Flash
Hi everyone,

I hope some one can help me. I'm a struggling Flash User who has created a powerpoint presentation that I would like to redo in flash. My reasoning for doing this is two fold. One - I converted the powerpoint presentation to dvd, therefore going from very high resolution down to NTSC. The results were okay but I had problems when I tried to sync the audio (narration when text appears). Two, I would like to create several different formats an electronic business card (BCD), a DVD and an autoplay CD.

My problems are that not only will I still lose the quality when I go down from Flash exported AVI to DVD, but I cannot figure out how using a flash presentation you auto advance thru the slides. Can either anyone help me by giving me their opinion on the above or by explaning the last question to me?

I eventually want to animate him after I grasp how to do so. I tried to create him with as many symbols I thought necessary (legs, feet, head, torso, etc). Can you guys just take a quick look and offer feedback to me? Do I need more shading, fix the shading, add more symbols to make animation easier (ie walk cycles, etc)?
Do I finish off the tail symbol even though not all of it is seen?

I just need basic things like that answered.

And of course any overall critiques on my first "drawing" are welcome.

(Need Advice) Flash Delivery From CD-Rom
Situation: Ive developed this training course/presentation that I will be presenting to potential buyers. We will be showing them the presentation and have the intent of leaving them a copy behind on a CD.
Dilemma: I have several swf's (video, sound, other external files such as PDF's and .DOC's) all linked to my main presentation file (swf), using the loadMovie - get URL command... BUT, they only work with a predetermined file path name (in the main presentation file). Which leaves me the dilemma of once the specified path is broken (from moving the files from one location to another), the linked files will no longer work.
Question: What methods are available to deliver the customer the neccessary files easily accessable from one CD-Rom using Flash MX (Pro)? Is there a way to target the relative path directly to the end users CD drive? Even if theyre not to be removed - just viewed from the CD standalone?
Question: To deliver Flash across multiple platforms (which may or may not have the player installed) whats available for solutions regarding an installation that would install the Flash Player as well as create a directory for all attaching files all in one installation process? Is Flash even capable of providing this need?

If anyone with experience regarding these issues could drop some knowledge and shed some light on them, Id appreciate it.

Flash Php - Sessions? Advice Please
Hey all,

Ok, I'm making a flash quiz type thing. I want the user just to type in a username (no password protection etc) and then to do the quiz. The username and the users' answers to each question should be stored in a database so they can later be retrieved and emailed to me.

I'm going to use php and mysql, I'm ok with passing all the data back and forth. My question is, do I need to worry about sessions? around 70 people will be doing the quiz at the same time, so I need to make sure the answers sent to the db at each stage are inserted against the correct user. I think using sessions is the best way to do this but I don't know much about them and especially how to use them with flash.

If someone could explain basically how it would all work, and/or point me in the direction of a simple tutorial it would be very much appreciated!

Advice On Flash Load Up
ehy fellas. if someone can help me out here..what do i need to add or edit on my flash object/script that will allow it to either wait for a second or two before playing or better yet the main problem I have is the flash animation i created is around 1.6mb and i have it as a webpage intro type deal now soon as I goto the page the animation just plays all choppy -its loading while im viewing i guess all the way thru till the end..But after that I can goto the page and it loads fast and fine its just always the first time or after restart of pc..etc got to have IE to cache it again or something? but yeah is there a way to make it load faster or loadup first before it displays?? Im a flash novice using MX so you havta excuse the silly questions..heh

NEED ADVICE: Sound In Flash Played On Mac
Okay, I have a couple of narration audios at 22kHz, mono, 16 bit about 30 seconds long.. synchronized with animation.

When I export the movie and play on PC, it runs fine with the animation.... but, when I play the swf on Mac.. the animation lags big time.. and this happens on a G4 with 640mb RAM, which rids of any memory-related issue.

So, I don't know what the problem is... but, I suspect it has something to do with some Mac specific issue with flash.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? does anyone have suggestions or advice on how to make it consistent between platforms.

Need An Advice | ASP/ASP.NET Course / Flash Developer Course In Australia?
Hi Everyone, I need your Advice please:

I am a computer science graduate with a good programming background, so far I worked only for six months contract
period in an E-commerce company in Australia as a web developer. I need to get back Into IT and would like to do
a course to boast my IT career prospects.

* I am not a Flash designer but I would like to know if there is a Flash course out there that can help me to use my
programming skills to become a Flash Developer using actionscripting especially now MX is out with the new OOP
Action scripting techniques and ofcourse maybe integrating other languages with Flash such as ASP, PERL, XML, etc...?

* As with ASP, I still have intermediate programming skills and I am very intersted in the new ASP.NET and just
wondering if someone could tell me what is a good ASP/ASP.NET Course out there?

* What should I look into before selecting the right course, I want to make sure it will really help me, after all its
all about getting back into IT?

Flash CD-ROM Advice

Hi, I have to build a Flash CD-ROM that is going to contain a lot of text. I'm just wondering if anyone has any examples of flash pieces that contain pages and pages of text. I'm usually working with small paragraphs of content and not pages and chapters. Advice would be appreciated.
