Creating Animated Cartoons
Hi there!

I just started playing around with flash yesterday. I'm a big fan
of all those great flash movies, like (my current favourites) Happy Tree Friends and especially iLL WiLL Press!

I really would like to do such things, too. Just for fun. I spend hours
of searching good Flash Tutorials about that topic, but somehow
i only found tutorials about basics which you even can learn with
those basic tutorials which the Flash program (I'm using MX 2004) itself delivers.

Could anyone tell me what techniques are used to create such great flash movies? I already tried to create some characters, I'm not very good, i guess,
but i still want to try. For example lets take my first draw:

You could animate it frame by frame, but i think by using Flash it could
be much easier, at least i hope so. How can i for example just move/rotate the arm or the legs around in a whole with tweens so that i don't have to do everything on my own?
How can you draw such movies in an efficient way? Should i make a symbol of every body part? What about "sub-animations" like the different smiles of a face and so on?

I'm very grateful for every answer, please consider that i just started Flash yesterday! :'-)

How Do I Make Flash Animation/cartoons?
I've been watching flash animations on the internet at places like flashplayer.com since who knows when, but it is just now that I have gotten Flash MX 2004. I have tried some very basic things with tweening ,motion paths, etc, and I have made a stick figure that tween walks in place, but beyond that I'm stuck. Does anyone know of a good website or tutorial on how to make flash animation that actually is good? I can't seem to find one anywhere and until that I'm stuck.

Question About Animating Cartoons And Anime In Flash
I have just started learning flash 8 proffessional and i LOVE it, i already know hwo to build a fully featured and functional website, so that one objective off the list.

however i am wanting to do a big project now, animating a short film. but i want to know how capable flash is. i have seen programs like anime studio and toon boom get great remarks, but if i can do it all in flash i would rather since im getting so much into it and learning it fast, plus ToonB and AnimeS have very little tutorial content.

i want to know a few things though, firstly is it easy (by easy i mean is the program functional and provide good features to help the user) to animate humans, and clothes? and also is there a rigging feature of some kind. eg. in anime studio you can create bones for the 2d character.

also if you could link to some projects and films that have been created in flash that would also be great!

thanks and i hope you can help.

Collaborative Flash Series?
I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this here or not (I'll delete if not)

But is anyone here looking to do a collaborative flash cartoon? Looking for anyone good with graphics, animating, and voice-overing (I write scripts and do voice-overing)

On a side note also looking for information on how collaborative flash cartoons work exactly for anyone who's done them before (tips)

Create Non-animated Equivalent Of Animated Flash 8 Animation
Hi, I'm working with a template that includes Flash. It's bad enough I've never touched Flash before this project, but I have to actually work with someone else's engineering of one (I'm retrofitting a purchased template)! LOL

Anyway, all I want to do is to save a completely non-animated version of the animated version I've managed to perfect. The plan is to use it on sub-pages of our presentation so that people only have to experience the animation when they land on the page. Not when they're navigating around. I've already tried a couple of things including saving an image map version. All that did was present me with an error message that certain components weren't included, which is tentatomount to being non-usuable to me for now.

So, is there a way to tell Flash, "Hey, this looks great, now give me a static version of it with working links and everything!".

Thanks if anyone can help!

Series Of Questions On Flash Design
Hi, I started learning flash only about 2 weeks ago. And thanks to this site and lot of experimenting I have learnt a fair bit about Flash in a relatively short time period.

Currently I am working on a web site, and I ran into a series of questions/problems i was not able to figure out.

1. I want to make a layer so that when you click on anywhere on the layer you leave a mark on it. ie. a bullet hole as the mark or the image. So far I have created the appropriate layer etc. and have the actionscript set up so that on mouseclick, i get the x and y co-ordinates on that layer, and place an image at that location. However I want the image to disappear from that layer after say 5 seconds, do i convert the image into a movie or is there an actionscript command for that.

2. how do i make those bars which move according to the music which is being played. Like the visualization on window media player etc. ?

3 how do i make something move *randomly*? Do i use the time as a random generation seed? like in a whackamole game

4. based from question 3, if i werer do create something moving, which the person had to hit, do i create a movie with a button on it? or use action script to detect when mouse has been clicked on it?

thats about all the question for now. I appreciate your time and help, thanks in advance.

Cheers,
itachi

Continuity Of Flash Files In Series
I have a series of Flash files that need to play in series and keep variables till next file loads, but the Flash files will be on separate CDs. Is there a way to make a file wait till the next one loads? Even if the file came from a CD which will need to be switched out with the one with the next file?

Any suggestions you have will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Denise

Series Of Changing Thumbnails In Flash
I want to design a series of thumbnails where a larger version of the thumbnail appears in the top part of the interface. Here are two websites that give an example of exactly what I'm talking about:
[1] http://xbox360.ign.com/ -- The "Today on IGN" section is what I'm talking about. See how the thumbnails change; but if you click on one of them, it goes to the selected site.
[2] http://movies.yahoo.com/ -- At the left side on the page. The image changes as you select the movie.

Looking forward to hearing from someone about this. I'm in a real doozy here . Thank you all in advance!

Starting Flash Series, Need People
Overview of plot: Modern times. Run down city. The main character is a 13 year old boy. His parents were vampires but were killed when he was only 5 by some sort of demonic creatures. He has spent every day since then training to kill whoever killed his parents. He starts getting some leads around when he is 13, where the episodes start. I have the first episode thought out in my head, putting it to paper slowly. the main characters face is drawn. sort of anime looking.

He will have powers such as great strength, jumping very high and long distances, Celerity (great speed), and some minor telekinesis (moving inanimate objects mainly)

The backgrounds will be pictures done with Photoshop or similar programs. the character design will be sketched on paper, and thrown into flash, traced then colored. body parts will be separated ect. each scene will be well thought out and I will do my best to make sure that every ingredient is available before the pizza is put in the oven (ya corny figure of speech but you get the point.)

basically looking for flash animators
concept artists
Photoshop (or any good program like that) artists (mainly for backgrounds. different views ect.
and definitely voice actors.

I will try to piece the team together and maybe get a webpage going after a bit of planning.

Obviously there will be no pay at first, but who is to say we wont get sponsored? Look what happened to Ninjai (.com) they started out 2 or so years ago for fun and it exploded.

Loading A Series Of Videos In Flash 8
I'm trying to load a series of videos in Flash 8. I want to play the first video and have a new swf (video file) load when the first is finished. When I embedded videos in Flash 6, I used to put the load-new-file code in the last frame. But I don't know how to do this with flv files (since in the timeline there is just a single frame).

Load A Series Of Flash Movie Using LoadMovie();
Dear all,

I have 3 flash movies: a.swf, b.swf and c.swf. And I create a main.swf to load those 3 movies orderly (from a to c).

In the main.swf:
- At frame 1, I put the script: loadMovie("a.swf","_root")
- At frame 2, I did the similar job as with frame 1 with b.swf.

Now the Flash Player only load the b.swf movie. There is no sign of a.swf to be loaded. Tho' I did unloadMovie a.swf before load this new one.

What's wrong with my solution? Please help .I am using Flash 8

New Series Of Flash Cartoon Animation Tutorials
I'm starting off a new series of flash tutorials for beginning (and maybe some experienced) flash cartoonists. No actionscript or games, just cartoons in flash. I'm starting with the fundamentals and will work up to more complex stuff later. I figure it's better than buying a $50 book especially on the budget most of us have.

Animator Needed For Flash Comedy Series
Admins - this offer will probably not include pay, but if it does, it will be informal at best. Thus, I thought that this forum might be a better fit than the Freelance forum. If you prefer, move it there.

Brief: we need an animator for a comedic flash series. We've already got a script, voice actors, etc. but need one or more animators.

----------------------
The Application
----------------------
Last time we tried to get an animator, we happened to get a good animator who didn't actually finish any of the work on a reasonable timescale. We are hoping that will change this time around.

If you're at all interested, send an e-mail with some kind of an animation resume to me at:

noemailshere@gmail.com

An acceptance of the job would mean a commitment to the creation of the first episode, but we have several more planned and would be happy to bring you back.

----------------------
Introduction to the Series
----------------------
A while ago, some of my friends and I developed a concept for a flash comedy series, based on the horrific school that we intended and the bizarre people that inhabited it.

But then we sat down to write the script and realized that it wasn't really that. Instead, it seemed like a breakneck collection of the strangest funny stuff you could imagine, loosely held together by this concept of the school which instead of being in the forefront was rather the staging ground for a larger, less understandable plot.

----------------------
Synopsis
----------------------
An ex-Russian soldier, still wholeheartedly involved in the Cold War, Mr. Romanovsky, journeys to the United States, where, he has heard, juvenile delinquents can be found in bulk, and even, if one was to open up a school to "help" said delinquents, used for his evil world domination schemes. Here, he marries a rich, devilish woman, Mrs. Romanovsky, and uses her vast supply of funds to construct a "school". He convinces her that this "school" is a school, and she is inspired to become the best teacher she can be - despite her fierce hatred of children. He amasses a student body (all male, except for one attractive girl - who's a lesbian), and sets to creating his master army. All the while, though, he is forced to maintain the ruse of running a normal correctional school whenever parents, Mrs. Romanovsky, or the government is nearby.

The flash focuses on the lives of the students who live there, following in particular the new guy, Sam, a fairly average teen that recently got busted for possession, before deciding to go to Romanovsky Academy instead of juvie, a decision which he will regret for the rest of his life.

Unfortunately, he's the only normal one there, in a school inhabited by a guy who at times thinks he's a superhero, the fabled Ben from his Room of Ben, a tabletop RPG fan with a robotic arm constructed by Apple Corporation, and the coolest guy in this hemisphere. If you knew him, you wouldn't be reading this. You would probably be desperately trying to earn his favor.

So that's it, really. Please, post any questions or e-mail me if you wish. I'll be checking back fairly often.

New To Flash: Best Way To Animate Series Of Static Images?
i'm wondering if someone can help me understand the best way to animate this, and i apologize in advance for this long post:

its basically a photo slideshow, picture some small images with PREVIOUS and NEXT buttons below the photo. when the user clicks the RIGHT i want the current image to 'slide off' the screen and the next image to slide into place.

it seemed easy enough I put each consecutive image on a certain layer in a frame and had them slide left in a tween, and i controlled it by gotoandplay() and stop()

the problem is when the user clicks 'PREVIOUS' I have no idea how to rewind time and play my flash animation in reverse (to have the tween go backwards so the previous image slides back into place), so I'm thinking I probably went about this the wrong way.

can anyone give me their advice for the best solution for this?

ALSO: if possible can someone point me in the direction of how to create a non-linear speed animation, so that the speed of the tween slows down gradually as the new image slides into place, so its more of a gentle animation and not so jarring?

thank you very much in advance

Flash Generating A Series Of Random Numbers
I've posted about this before, bassicaly my problem is needing to generate a lot of random numbers in flash at once. the numbers typically end up being the same or very close to the same number because the random numbers are fed by how long the movie has been running.

I was thinking maybe I could somehow "seed" the random numbers to avoid this. ie have an array of numbers that i hard code in. ie... 1,2.5,6,4,2,8,7,0 which would help "seed" the random number because each time a random number is generated it won't be the same number over and over because the seed is significantly different enough to create numbers that are different enough.

Is doing something like this possible in any way?

Cartoons
I have been looking around lately for some .fla's of animated cartoons.

I was wondering if anyone could help me. I am interested in making one, but am unsure how to go about animating the characters. Also, is it possible to animate a traced bitmap? How much work would this entail?

I know this post is a little vague, but I just dont have the information to be specific at this time.

Thanks for your time,

Are there major problems in changing them into vector graphics? (I use Flash 5)

Thanks

Example For Pop-up Style Cartoons
I need someone to show me how to make a pop-up style cartoon from a flash button. I'll send my site and an example cartoon as a .fla via e-mail, and i just need to see the example and then i'll understand.

I'm a tactile-kinestechtic learner so this is the best way. I'd really really appreciate if you could do this for me. And i'll give u credit on my site. It's not that great of a flash site so i can trust anyone with the .fla.

THANKS!

Cartoons? Help Please Newbie
Hi all,
For a class I am required to create some kind of graphic representation of this past semester. I was thinking about making a short animated cartoon no more than 2 minutes in length. I have never done flash before. I was hoping I could put some clip art or pics together to build the animation. Is this even possible? I do not own any software since this is like a demo run and I have never done this before.

Is there demo software out there that can do this for me?
I have to have this done by 12/1/04 and do not have a lot of time to work on it.

I am studying to become a teacher so the animation would be about education and schools.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Ultrashock's Cartoons
Hello,

I just wanna know how Ultrashock's staff made the "cartoons" stuff ( in their intros) . What software did they use ?

Ultrashock Cartoons
I am fairly new to character design within a computer, and would like to go about making an animated series. I am very impressed with Ultrashock's characters style, very simple. What program is best suited for that type fo style? Illustrator vs Flash? Would anyone do something like that within flash? Using what tools? Pen tool mainly? I've hand drawn a sketch of what my charter will look like, however want it to be vector. Anyway, congrats to the community on helping the newbies being the tomorrow's professional.

Sound/Music In Cartoons
I'm sorry if this question has been asked a million time before, but I just got started in Flash Cartooning and the one question is throwing me.

*I'm using Flash MX2004*

In the scene in question, I have a car chase type scene...complete with music and dialogue. Problem is, I was wondering how I could make the my "music" layer quieter in the frames where the dialogue kicks in. I have gone under the sound file's properties and used the Custom "handles" to quiet it for those frames and it worked well. But then, for some reason, I noticed it would only allow me to have so many "handles" to manipulate the file. And seeing as there are numerous "cut shots" to characters talking, I can't use this for a whole song that stretches the entire length of my movie. I'm sure there is something for this (actionscipting? of which I know nothing about) Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

[F8] Creating Stick Cartoons
Hi. I have just started doing stick animation. I noticed it looked like most of the stick cartoons have a cool style. They seem to have set positions like walking, standing, sitting, running, and the like. It is almost as if they are using actionscript to just switch from one to the other so they don't have to keep redrawing.
I also noticed some of them look like the arms and legs have motion tweens and there are joints.
I was wondering how to do these things. I would like to make some funny stick cartoons but I don't want to draw the sticks with the pencil. That looks crappy and unprofessional.

[F8] Learning To Make Cartoons
Hi everyone,

I have just begun learning flash - I want to learn to make great flash cartoons. To give you an idea of the quality of cartoon I want to produce, watch this:

Chipmunk's Flash cartoon (the chipmunks gangsta rap)

I have the talent to animate like that - but I don't know how to make the program do what I want!! (I'm using Flash Pro 8)

My questions:
1) What is the best resource to learn how to make cartoons like that in flash?
2) Is there a way to create 'cycles' that a character will continuously loop while other things are happening? (e.g. a band is playing in the background while two characters chat in the foreground)

Right now, I created a character - 8 layers (2 legs, 2 arms, 2 eyes, 1 head, 1 torso) - is there any way to move around individual parts of a character on ONE layer? it just seems excessive to need 8 layers for one little character.

I would really appreciate any help you gurus are willing to give!!

Best Framerate For Online Cartoons?
I'm working an online cartoon series, but I'm finding it hard to decide on a frame rate.

One of my books recomends 12fps, but that is going to be really choppy.

I was considering 24fps because that is the same as cinema... and I can animate on 2's for the less important parts, and 1's for the fast pased sections of my animation...

But with 25fps, I can isolate the middle frame in a second... 12,1,12 (first, middle, last)... but maybe I will never need to do that.

Also I was considering what the best frame rate would be if I wanted to put my flash animations on a DVD in the future, NTSC is 30fps, and PAL is 25... If I chose one, the other would be compromised...

I do have Flash MX 2004, but I would be compiling for 6 player.

What do you think?

Also, do you know any good forums for flash cartoon animators to discuss stuff? Kirupa users seem more Actionscript focused on average.
