Flash Movie Tips.. First Time
Hi, I used flash a few times a long time ago.. Flash 4. Now I'm using Flash MX and wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions...
I've begun making a music video, totally animation done in flash... I've already realized that trying to go 12 fps is too hard for my little computer, though 6 works fine. The movie will have different scenes and the camera will be panning on some (well, so far the only way I can get this effect is by making the entire scene itself drag on/off the page... which will probably cause problems later). Anyone have experience in using flash for making animated movies? Tips? Hints? Suggestions.. tricks of the trade.. etc. would be GREATLY appreciated.
Actionscript looks like it could be useful and I know javascript/html but I'm wondering if its worth taking the time to pile through all of the functions just to maybe save a few kb of space to do something I could do manually.
Also, I have no idea how to put these things on a web page or whatever... I'm just good at drawing really :D
Anyways, thanks...... -matt

Tips To Avoid The "A Script In This Movie Is Causing Flash Player To Run Slowly.." ?
Hey all,
I'm getting reports from some people that get the ol' "A script in this movie is causing Flash Player to run slowly." message on my website quite often. I can't reproduce it on even my slow computers, so I'm assuming it might be related also to net connection speed.
Does anyone have any good tips for avoiding bad code that causes this? I've gone through my code in detail and can't think of some good ways to avoid certain uses of onEnterFrame's. I often use the stop() command on a frame and use this.onEnterFrame() to accomplish some stuff, should I be looping between two frames instead and let the onEnterFrame do its stuff? Or is there a better way to handle this?
Thanks!
Tips Needed For My Movie
Dont you hate it when you finish a movie, then everyone gives you all these great tips? Well I am, so Here is a test pic from my movie, and I need you guyz to tell me whats wrong, and what will make it better.
Tips For Faster Movie
Can give me any tips or trick to make my movie faster. I'd like to make a flash website but I'm afraid it might take too long to load. If you can help at all...please do.
Thank you very much.

Please speak simple so that I can understand.
Tips For Reducing Movie Size
I'm suprised there's not a sticky somewhere on this but I'm working on a movie and for some reason the size is now at 6.5MB
I've taken most of the images from the library and reduced their quality and size as far as I can using photoshop and I think once I'm done it'll go down to about 3MB but this is still too big.
Any tips for shrinking it?
By the way this is eventually going to be a screensaver.
Movie Clip Organisation And Navigation Tips?
There is this project I've been tasked to add forward and back buttons and another button to show selected scenes within this SWF file.
The main movie contains many smaller movie clips riddled with externally loaded sound clips.
It's current logic put together is it starts out with some simple animation on then programatically play a movie clip which in turn that movie clip has timers set to then play the next movie clip and so on..... There is no way to scrub the timeline to see which movie clip is going to play next. One has to troll through the code to figure out which clip may would play next, which are just part of a clip and so on....
So my specific question is, how would one would have better organized the flow of play sequence such that, it would be easy to have a forward or backward button that makes the timeline go to the next scene or last scene....
Thanks!
[MX04] Imported SWISH Movie To Flash Doc And Only Want To Loop 1 Time Within My Movie
I have a flash movie that I am working on. This is my situation:
- I brought a movie from SWISH max to create an effect to this one tag line
- I exported that movie and imported it into a flash mx 2004 document
- When I preview it dont stop looping!
- I tried creating a setting for it on the SWISH application that says "stop playing at end of movie" but i think it overrides that once its brough over to Flash MX.
Any suggestions how I can take care of this problem withi flash? Thanks!
[F8] Using Time In A Flash Movie.
Ok this may sound overly complicated but hopefully it will provide a really cool and dynamic aspect of a flash movie.
I have created a banner for a website that has the sun on it. Now what I’m wishing to do is have the sun travel thro the day and it will be positioned at appropriate times throughout the day.
so I will create a movie clip with say instance name "sunandmoon_mc" witch will contain a sun animated through the sky, and then the moon.
I will use controls throughout this animated timeline to control other movie clips that are stationed in other parts of the move (tree shadows etc etc).
I thought about giving this movie clip "sunandmoon_mc" 1440 frames. One for every minute of the day. I know not all will need individual animation. say the action script layer can have 1440 key frames all with stop actions. Id rather do this visually than with code because that’s how I like to work. So between frame 0 and 1440 I will have the complete pass of both the moon and sun.
What I would like to be able to do is in the root timeline have a caller or whatever its called to update the frame the mc "sunandmoon_mc" should be showing. Say if its 1am frame 60 and so on. But I have no idea how.
I don’t mind if there is some better way of labelling the frames inside the mc or even if I have to include more.
Any ideas on the action script would be wonderful.
Thanks in advance
Si
And I got 1440 from 24x60mins.
Movie Clip Differs From Time To Time By One Pixel

Flash Movie Loading Time
Hi to everyone,
I've been working on a flash site, working very nicely. One problem. It's huge! It contains 600 pictures (approximately 100kb/each). What's the solution to load all these pictures? I just can't figure it out since I'm not good enough with flash.
Thanks for the help in advance.

Loading Flash Movie Time's Out
Hi everyone,
I've found that approximately 20% of our users experience a timeout when waiting for a flash movie (200kb) to download. The preloader just freezes at a point and that's it, no timeout error from internet explorer either. Just wondering if this is a shared occurance out there.
Have a great day!
Thanks

Flash Movie Seems To Bog Down Computer As Time Goes On
Hello everyone, this is my first post on this forum. I've found it to be a great resource over the last few weeks as I've been working on a flash movie that is dynamically pulling in photos and using bitmap smoothing in an effort to make smooth looking fade and zoom tweens.
Anyway, as I am somewhat of a newbie to the world of Actionscript (I've been using flash as a cartoon animation tool for a few years now), I am somewhat unaware of the effects of certain things that I did within the code on load time, but not so much in how long it takes for a user to load the movie, but more about what it seems to do to a user's computer as time goes on. The slideshow is smooth at the beginning but gets slow and choppy and eventually gets my laptop's fan running hard (that can't be good!).
Here is a link to what it looks like right now:
(link taken down)
My guess (once again I'm sort of a newbie to AS) is that something is looping and adding onto itself, creating some sort of feedback loop...but who knows, I am hoping someone here is familiar with this. I am building off of code from kaourantin.net (http://www.kaourantin.net/2005/12/dy...maps-with.html
here's some code if it helps (its long im sorry):
Code:
var area = "South_Kingstown";
area = area.toLowerCase();
import flash.display.*;
function loadBitmapSmoothed(url:String, target:MovieClip, num) {
// Create a movie clip which will contain our unsmoothed bitmap
var bmc:MovieClip = target.createEmptyMovieClip("bmc",target.getNextHighestDepth());
// Create a listener which will notify us when the bitmap loaded successfully
var listener:Object = new Object();
// Track the target
listener.tmc = target;
listener.onLoadProgress = function(target:MovieClip, bytesLoaded:Number, bytesTotal:Number):Void {
percent = Math.round((bytesLoaded/bytesTotal)*100);
pText.text = percent+"%";
//trace(percent);
}
// If the bitmap loaded successfully we redraw the movie into
// a BitmapData object and then attach that BitmapData to the target
// movie clip with the smoothing flag turned on.
listener.onLoadInit = function(mc:MovieClip) {
//mc._visible = false;
var bitmap:BitmapData = new BitmapData(mc._width, mc._height, true);
this.tmc.attachBitmap(bitmap, this.tmc.getNextHighestDepth(),"auto", true);
bitmap.draw(mc);
//now lets tween this image
tweenImage(num);
};
// Do it, load the bitmap now
var loader:MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader();
loader.addListener(listener);
trace(url);
loader.loadClip(url, bmc);
}
//this is creating loader1_mc inside of container
var loopTime = 10;
var fadeoutTime = 5;
var endAlert;
//var numberOfImages = 20;
imageArray = new Array();
image1 = "images/areas/"+area+"_1.jpg";
image2 = "images/areas/"+area+"_2.jpg";
image3 = "images/areas/"+area+"_3.jpg";
imageArray = [image1, image2, image3];
var numberOfImages = imageArray.length;
//creates two movie clips, the first at a higher level than the second in stacking order
for (i=1;i<=numberOfImages;i++){
var imageLevel = (numberOfImages+1)-i;
createEmptyMovieClip("containerName"+i,imageLevel);
eval("containerName"+i)._visible = false;
}

}else{

My Top Six Tips For Using Flash
These are the top six things i think people need to do/know to work well in flash do all these and save time and head aches.
1.Name Every symbol
When you make a symbol (Movie clip, Graphic, Button) ALLWAYS NAME IT!!! it will save you time down the road. In Flash you can not have two different symbol's in the same flash with the same name.
2.Name Every layer
When you make a layer name it so you know what it does this way you can find the layer you need to when you need it.
3.Organize your library
Not a lot of people do this one it's not that hard just make folders in your library named Movie Clips, Graphics, Symbols, Tweens, Sounds. The Graphics folder is for all imported graphics and the Symbols folder is for all objects you convert to graphics. If it applies you may also want to make a folder for components.
4.Use script foot notes
No matter how good a scripter you are every one forgets what parts of there script are meant to do so using scripting foot notes is key. To add a foot note just type // then what ever the note is this note will only show up in the actions panel.
5.Have flash reformat your sound files
When you import sounds they are set at a quality that may be two high you can lower this and it will sound the same and it will lower your flashes size. To reformat the sound right click on it in your library and select properties then compression. If it's music then select MP3 and set it at 16 kbps or 20 kbps if it's some one talking select speech and keep it at about 22 kHz.
6.Put a Password on your flash files
You love your work right? then protect it with a password this way no one can import your fla in to flash and rip it apart. Go to File/Publish settings then click the box Protect from importing then set your password, There your file is now safe.
I hope you all liked my tips i would like feed back on whether or not this helped you.

Flash Tips
Hey guys, I have been working with flash for almost 5 years now. I am a self-taught individual and I can't help to feel like I am doing a lousy job structuring all my .fla files. Do you guys have any tips to keep everything nice and clean, especially when I want to make additions to the .fla in the future?
Flash Lag <<- Tips?
hi,
I have this RPG-like screen where you have a character walking through.. the forest or something.. and the thing is.. it's lagging.. LOTS..
On that scene.. there are quite a lot of Tree graphics and grass graphics.. I've tested this and apparently graphics run a lot smoother than movieclips with bitmap caching on..
Also.. My character has lots of different hair styles all put into one movieclip.. and i thought that by removing them all.. and just have a attachMovie() script to pull in the appropriate hairstyle clips.. it would go faster..
but apparently it doesn't seem to of made much difference..
what other ways can i reduce the lag on flash?
thanks!
Loading A Flash Movie Only One Time On A Site
I am sort of new to the flash arena and have what may be a simple question, but I am having trouble figuring out a solution.
I have a flash movie on a site that I would like to only be played once even when the page is refreshed. I have the movie set where it will play through the animation one time (i.e using the stop command in the last keyframe), but I need a way to keep the movie from reloading if someone hits the refresh page button or follows a link and returns using the back button. Right now everytime you follow a link and come back the movie will reload from scratch. Anyone have any suggestions?
Flash Crashes Every Time I Open A Movie
I have a fla file i have been working non for some time for a client. The file was working perfectly until a few days ago when i tried to open it. Flash immediately crashed. So i tried opening it on a different machine with flash on. same thing, not even an error message. I have now tried it on around 5 machines with no luck. So today i resigned myself to having to restart the project. However i tried opening the file as a library and it opened OK. One of the library items (a movie clip named "movie") is corrupted as if i click on it in the library it causes flash to crash. SO when i am opening the file, flash tries to load that movie and it crashes. is there any way i can edit the fla with another program to remove this file? i tried in a hex editor searching for movie but it doesn come up with anything congruent... Any ideas? i'd rather not lose that work (although with the library back it is not as bad!)

Flash Crashes Every Other Time I Test A Certain Movie?
Ok... really really odd and annoying error. Almost every other time I test publish this file, it runs the file fine, I click the "x" to close it and go back to editing it. Almost every time I do this it crashes flash instantly ("flash has encountered an error and needs to close").This only happens with one particular file- all it does is load data from a file, or rather a sequence of files.
Code:
this.createEmptyMovieClip("target_mc", this.getNextHighestDepth());
for(i=1;i<12;i++){
loadVariables("myInfoUrl/?type="+i, target_mc);
}
function checkParamsLoaded() {
if (target_mc.user_dob == undefined) {
trace("not yet.");
} else {
trace("finished loading. killing interval.");
trace("-------------");
for (i in target_mc) {
showVar += i+": "+target_mc[i]+"
";
}
trace(showVar);
trace("-------------");
clearInterval(param_interval);
}
}
var param_interval = setInterval(checkParamsLoaded, 100);

Tips For Sudoku Flash
Hi everyone.
I have to make a Sudoku game in Flash, with action script, but I'm struggling a lot. With what we have been taught so far I just can't see a way to make one and its impossible to find any tutorials or open code to study on the net.
My main problem is that I don't know how I can organise it so that numbers can only be placed within a grid and how to then check said grid. Is there some kind of grid tool or what?
Any help, tips are greatly appreciated, as is your time for reading this post.
Thanks.
My Top Seven Tips For Flash Newbies
These are the top seven things i think newbies need to do/know to work well in flash do all these and save time and head aches.

When you make a symbol (Movie clip, Graphic, Button) ALLWAYS NAME IT!!! it will save you time down the road. In Flash you can not have two different symbol's in the same flash with the same name. If you did not know if you edit a symbol that change will apply to all symbols with that name. Also it helps to add a suffix to your named instances (_mc, _btn, etc.)
2.Name Every layer

7. Save your scripts
Keep a folder or file with "snippets" or pieces of code you use over and over again for easy locating ("I know I used a pause function in that piece I did last year for that one client...now where would that be?"). Flash 8 lets you save your action script in to a script file (.as) this is useful for keeping your scripts on hand and you can have flash call these files and run what ever script is in them in your project.
I hope you all liked my tips i would like feed back on whether or not this helped you.

XML Tips For Flash Menu
Hi I am a complete newbie when it comes to XML and Flash. Just to set the record straight.
I am currently building a menu using Flash and XML it is a very basic menu from the template that comes with Flash. I just have 2 things that I am trying to do with in the menu and I am not sure whether XML can do it or not.
1: Is there a way to set the font size in XML instead of doing it in Flash and can you set different font sizes for different levels of a menu/sub menu?
2: At the moment when you click on one menu item the sub menu comes down then when you click on another menu item that sub menu comes down and the other one stays down as well, you have to manually click on the menu item to make the sub menu come back up. Is there a way to make the sub menus automatically come back up when you select a different menu item?
Thank you.
Flash Shorthand Tips?
As I get into more advanced ActionScript, I start wondering about ways I can write things more quickly. For example, this code
ActionScript Code:
button1.onRelease = function() {
//something
}
button2.onRelease = function() {
//something
}
could be written as
ActionScript Code:
button1.onRelease = button2.onRelease = function() {
//something
}
I wasn't aware of this until very recently, even though it may be obvious to those of you who have more experience, and it would be helpful to learn more things like this. If anybody has things to add, I would be very interested! Links to websites and other threads regarding this matter would be helpful as well.

Calculate Time User Has Been Viewing Flash Movie
Hi! I am needing to do something similar to what you see here:
http://www.comcast.com/corporate/exp...dinternet.html
*Click on "Pure Broadband Speed" > "Way Faster than DSL"
*Then click on "Where the Rubber meets the road"
I need to know how they are calculating the time the user has been viewing the flash file and once it has caught up, have a running counter while they stay on that "page". Can anyone help me out with that?
Thanks

Making A Flash Movie Delay Before Starting For The First Time
Flash noob here. I've currently got a little bit of actionscript in my flash movie which makes it loop a couple times, and then pause, before looping over again, and then pausing again, and wash-rinse-repeat, which is fine.
But now what I also need is to add a small bit of code (preferably on the first frame) which allows me to set a delay time, that the movie will just appear to be paused, but it should ONLY do this the first time. Every other time, the movie should loop like it does normally.
The reason is because I've got about 3 movies on my page, when one stops moving, I want a 2nd one to start, then when that one stops, the 3nd will start, and when the third one stops, the 1irst one will start again, etc. so I have to time it just right.

Detecting When A User Has Clicked On A Flash Movie For The First Time
Hi folks,
Is it possible, using Javascript, to detect when a user clicks an area on a flash movie. I could easily set up an event handler if I had access to the swf file, but I'm trying to do this on a youtube embedded clip so my users can add the youtube video to their favorites only once they have clicked on the movie to start it playing

Play A Flash Movie Every Time A Javascript Event Happens
Here's the deal. I'm building an application based in php and rendered to the user as straight up html. However, whenever the user performs certain tasks, I simply want a bell to ring. My thought was to simply create a flash movie that was nothing more than audio of a bell ringing. Every time the user did something, I would simply play the flash movie. From the research that I've done so far, it appears that LiveConnect is a pretty bad way in which javascript can communicate with flash. I'm also seeing something called the external interface.
Bottom line, can this be done? I'm simply want to play this movie (which is really just audio) every time a user does something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Tips&tricks Dynamic Flash - Help
Hello!
I'm trying to build a site using Flash. The Flash will call PHP to access a MySQL DB.
My question is, what is the best way to setup my Flash so that i can dynamically drop in text on the screen.?
Originally i though i'd just put up a bunch of empty text boxes and fill them in as i retrieve text from the database. However, i've run into a problem. What if the text is really long? I'll need a bigger box. What if i'm displaying a table with 5 rows, than i need to display a table with 8 rows?
Surey lots of people have done stuff like this before, what's the best way to go about it?
Does anyone have links to sites that do stuff like this?
Thanks everyone!

I'd like to make a tools tips text as the cursor is over the specific area.
(e.g.) move the cursor over the text for 3 seconds, then the text window pop up. And when move the cursor to other area, that text window get lost.
can i make it happen?
Thank you...
