XML Quiz - Randomizing Questions & Level Of Difficulty Questions
Hi Folks,
I've been tasked to do a quiz in XML with a few caveats and I need some help.

The quiz needs to pull randomized questions from the XML file and also I need to have this sort from 3 levels of difficulty. For example, a user would possibly get fed 3 easy 3 medium or 4 hard questions.

My XML is set up as follows:

These questions are being stored in an array called questionsArray. So I guess all I need to do is call these from the array @ random, but the level thing is really kickin' my butt. Im just kind of lost on this one and I was hoping for some insight all the way around on this. For some reason XML in Flash scares me. It always ends up being nightmare. Someone please wake me up from the nightmare:-

Questions Regarding Making Flash Smaller, And Linking Flash Movies

hello all. at the above link, you will find a very simple flash movie i made.

so its still quite tall. is there any way i can resize it so it looks the same, but only shows whats inside of the mask? there are two large white margins on the top and bottom that are not supposed to be there

also, how do i link this movie to a website?

here's my problem:

I understand the basic concepts of flash including actionscript and tweening. I have seen that tweening is very unconventional and takes up alot of space so i wanted to do everything for my movie in actionscript.

1. i wanted to make 2 panels in the middle of the screen open vertically to show my company's logo once the movie is loaded. How would i do this? is there any good tutorials on actionscripting? I can't seem to get that initial push to get started.

2. how do i make panels seem to have depth, like a bevel almost. I have only found the gradient tool in flash which really doesnt do what i want. thank you.

Several Flash Mx Questions - Please Help
Hi All hope you can help, here are my questions. (I am trying to create a website that is easy to update)

1. Is it possible for me to populate my flash MX with menu buttons that are automatically created by whatever is in a text file, for example, if my text file had the following:-

Home
Links
Contact
Guestbook

Could I get something to create the buttons automatically, also if the buttons were to become to many on the page could they be put into a scrolling box.

2. I would like to create an automatic Bio page for the members of my website which can change constantly. What I would like to do is use a database which stores the members photo and Bio then I want flash to automatically update the Bio page according to the entries in the database, So for example if I had the following members.
Callum
Steve
Jackie

Then on the Bio Page I would have a Box that brought in the picture and a Dynamic text field (Scrollable) that would bring in the Bio depending on which name was clicked on.

So if i added another memeber to the database then it would automatically update the memebrs links so that once the name was selected that person photo and Bio would be loaded from the database.

3. I would also like to have the following on my page.

A contact Form (This would be emailed to the webmaster)
A registration Form (Preferably created from either a database or text file)
A GuestBook (Database Again)
A NewsPoster (This would have to be a database I think. I would like this so memebers can post news that automatically fills a news page on my webpage, all news after 7 days old would be archived and the archive links would be made available on my news page.)

Sorry Guys, I know I am asking a huge amount, but I have been landed the job of creating our Automatic Dynamic webpage, that has to be ready in a few weeks time, and I have no Flash experience whatsoever, to be truthfull I got this job because I made a simple html intranet that was linked to a database.

Flash CD ROM Questions
Hi:

I have to create a Flash presentaion for a CD that will auto run when the users pops it into his or her computer. I haven't created one before and have a few questions I hope someone can answer.

I have Flash 5 (which I am fimiliar with) and just got Flash MX 2004 (which I haven't used very much). Which is the best version to use?

Does a Flash CD require a preloader? I thought if the Flash .exe movie is already on a CD it's ready to go, but want to make sure.

I have only used a preloader to load one scene (all the movies I have done at this point that required a preloader are on one scene). If my movie has multiple scenes, how to I make a preloader that makes all the scenes load before the movie starts?

Any insight, tips, tutorials, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Two Flash Questions.
Okay, I'm having a few problems, which I need to get sorted out.

1) Only the name of the selected layer appears, all the others get blanked out, unless I select it.

2) I made an animation in a graphic, but for some reason, the graphic isn't moving at all when I put it in the timeline, it just stays still on the first frame of it.

Please respond as fast as possible...I'm really desperate.

A Few Flash Questions...
Hi all,

I've got a few questions to ask. (they could be easy for you )

1. Can Flash Have a pop-up input dialog box, like in visual basic, the commondialog. - the standard windows OPEN FILE / SAVE. For loading a txt file of varibles when the location is picked by the user.

2. Is there a file list box in flash, that can show all the files within a folder, and count the number of files within it. - Again, like VB.

3. I know you can import another flash doc into a project. - But once imported, can the two send varibles between each other. Like Click a button in the imported flash, and it does somthing in the one thats holding it.

Two Flash Questions
Please try and answer my questions, thanks in advance.

1.) How can I make my flash movie have controls, just play, pause, and stop. Also I need to have a progress bar that you can skip to different parts of the movie. How would I do this?

2.) I've made some basic text animations like fading in/out and motion effects using tween, but I converted the text to a graphic symbol first. I'm animating the letter "D" in a font I downloaded and everything seems to be fine. When I play the movie using the enter key, everything looks good, but once I do control->enter or publish the movie, my D looks fine except it has no hollow part so its just a solid black D shape without the hole in the middle. I don't know what the problem is please help me.

Hello all,

My buddies and I are wanting to design a website using Flash. None of us have ever worked with Flash. We are going to learn it together. My question is that I am the only one with a flash program. I have flash 5. I was wondering can you build websites with flash 5? If you can what would be a good book to get to help us with learning how to use flash and to make a website out of it. I do have books "Idiots flash 5" and "how to do everything with flash 5" None of those books go into uploading a website using flash 5. The website is just a place to play cartoons that we wrote so it will not need to be fancy at all. The only hard part would be a form, but since I already know html, dhtml, cgi, javascript, PHP and Mysql I was just going to do it with one of them. Most likely javascript and cgi for the form and just use flash as my menu. So any information that you guys can provide to help us get off the ground would be great. Thanks

[MX] Questions About Avi And Flash
What steps do I need to take to be able to make a an AVI on flash MX with clips of stuff from real life?

I am entering a video contest which requires me to create a video and email it either in an AVI or MPEG format and also post it on youtube. I have never made a made an avi or mpeg before so I am considering using Flash MX since I can export the movie I make as an avi.

I want to include clips of things filmed in real life. I'm not very familiar with using a digital camera but I have one. I've seen flash movies contain clips from real life (like the numa numa dance) and I've seen flash movies converted to different files and posted on youtube so I'm aiming to do both.

How can I include clips of things in real life in a flash movie?

I've made videos for school group projects before although I never learned how to edit or put together individually recorded clips or get them on a computer as an AVI.

How can I work with clips of what I record in flash? Is it possible to be able to work them as if they were movie clip symbols that cannot be internally edited?

How should I optimize the avi? When I export the movie as an avi, Flash MX gives me the options shown in the attached image.

Questions About XML And Flash
I'm working on some Flash programming, and well, I'm in the noob section for a reason. Here's what I'm working at:

If you have an XML file with data, how do you load that XML file into a Flash site so it displays that data?

Then, say there are two different versions of the same file, "file1_x" and "file1_y", and you want to load one or the other depending on a condition. How do you get it to default one or the other? Basically, I'm dealing with programming conditionals and defaults in Flash, which I don't understand enough about (yet!).

Any suggestions?

Some Questions About Flash 8
It's been a while since I've messed with Flash and want to get back into it, but I have some questions before I invest some serious time into it:

Does the Macromedia Flash Professional 8 have the capablity of using mySQL databases, or does it need an extra script or do I need something else instead? I'm planning on making a game and want to use the mySQL to keep track of various items instead of coding them into the Flash Movie itself.

Also, how about if I use PHP and send data using PHP (and from there into the mySQL database), does it have the capablity of interacting with PHP instead as an alternative?

If I am not able to use mySQL or PHP, will an array of about 200 or so items slow down performance if I use it to store my data?

Another question is about the video tools:
I want to put in clips aquired from FRAPS from World of Warcraft (in an second project that I want to do)... any thoughts or opinions on the performance of the flash video?

Can I crop the video (cut out a certian section since I only really want part of it and not the whole screen) or edit the video (reduce the length to make the file size smaller for easier loading). How good is the compression?

Will this take up alot of bandwidth? ... For that last question, let's just assume that each video is about 2-4 minutes long and about the size of a 800w by 200h, I probally could take some shortcuts on the resolution, but I really would like to avoid that if possible.

The reason why I'm asking is to find out if it will be able to handle the type of projects that I have in mind and if it is even worth spending my time and money into this program, and is it really *worth* the 700 bucks for what they are asking for the professinal edition? ... I looked at the Macromedia Flash Basic but it lacks the features that I'm looking for and not worth the 400 bucks that they are asking for.

New To AS/Flash, Questions
Hey guys. I'm a total newbie to ActionScript and Flash, however I do have an extensive background in game development industry using C++.

I'm trying to make a small game in Flash+ActionScript 3.0.

I've been pretty successful so far in picking up the language, however I seem to be missing some important high level understanding of how things connect together. It's probably simple ActionScript commands that I'm unaware of... so here goes the questions.

1) I understand the connection between the document class and the .fla file. Basically the flash file is an instance that of the document class. Now suppose I make another class in a separate .as file. How does this class get access to the document class's functions / members? The only way I can see is that the document class creates an instance of the new class and passes the "this" pointer into some function call on the new class. That way the new class has a pointer to the already-created document class. Is this the right way to do it or is there an easier way?

2) I need a class that that holds externally loaded data (from an XML file in this case). I have such a class created. I want to load it's data once at startup and be accessible to all the other classes. How do I go about doing this? In C++ this would be a global instance that anyone can call functions on. How do I create such a thing in ActionScript? The only real "global instance" that I'm aware of is the document class accessed via method 1 above. There's got to be a more simple way...

3) Multiple .fla files. Let's say I have multiple flash files each with their own associated document class. I have read that in general, one flash file will use the Loader class to load another flash file. Then you can access the loaded flash file as a MovieClip / Sprite. The question here is, how do two document classes communicate? Or is it even possible? I really feel like I'm missing something really basic here.

In short, I'm thinking of making a single game that has 3 or 4 different "screens" to it (like mini-games). I want each screen to be it's own flash file and own .as class so I can work on it with a partner easily. But there needs to be some super class that sits above all of them with globally accessible data, like player name, score, etc.

So is all this simple and I'm missing something basic? Or are these concepts actually pretty complicated?

Some Flash Questions
Hi to all you Flash users. I am new to Flash and just started learning it a week ago. I am an avid Illustrator user, so naturally I have a few questions about what I found I cannot do in Flash. My two general questions are: 1. can you change the corner radius of a square after it's made. I cannot figure out how to do this. 2. How do I change the angle of my gradiant. What if I don't want it going horizontally or vertically? Can you do this in Flash? My big question relates to sound. I am having a very hard time trying to synchronize my audio to the mouth of my figure. I am finding it hard to find a way to either put a tick on the timeline to determine a change in the keyframe. When I go into the edit portion of the properties widow for the audio file, I can set it to either frames or seconds, but when I play the audio there is no marker on the timeline to accurately mark the second or frame where my change needs to take place. Hope my questions are clear enough. Thanks for any help regarding these matter.

Flash Questions
Im making a full flash template for my site. I want the text justified, and i selected that option but when i play the movie it doesnt apply the changes.

I also pasted an image from photoshop as one of my button states and when i play the movie the color for the text seems to be different. The original color was red/pink and flash makes it look grey.

how can i fix any of these problems?

Ohh and im also wondering if theres any way to incorporate haloscan comments (http://www.haloscan.com/) in flash somehow, or have a tagboard/chat thing in flash.

i also have another question i forgot. Sometimes the images i put into flash dont look sharp. For example, I pasted this bullet i made in photoshop, and i have it about 10 times for the links. Whenever i go to that menu with my bullets, half of them look normal (sharp) and the other half look fuzzy and not as sharp. How can i fix this?

Flash is only small in size when you are using vectors....
so if i had a html site with like 200 jpgs, and i just imported into one swf.... that would be the same size as if i made an html page with 200 jpgs?

aside from the fact the new nine inch nails site www.nin.com is cool.... fans think it is a good idea since it "loads faster"

I on the other hand think its retarded... they're not using animation, vectors, or anything that flash has to offer... and this canb e easily be donein html.

I think people "think" it loads faster is because maybe when you see sliced jpgs loading it looks like its taking longer, but when its one swf the whole thing reveals itself as one.

Flash MX Questions
Hi I have a question. I am new to the whole flash program. I want to know a few things. First how can I create a loading bar. Also how do I specify that when I make a flash movie that I want it to be an introduction to my webpage? My third and final question is I have been trying to get an object to move with a path drawn by the pencil tool and a tutorial says I have to turn on snap how do I do that???

2 Questions On Flash MX
I am creating a website in Flash and I have 2 questions:

1.) I want to use the HTML tags of <a href> <a name> to have hyperlinks that are accessible on the same page. But, my question is, will that even work in FLash?

2.)My Second question is, are there special settings to get a Flash site to work on Frontpage? All the pages I create work fine in "preview" mode, but when I post them using Frontpage nothing happens.

Can anyone help with this?

Two Flash MX Questions
How can actionscript move objects? Also, does anyone know of a good ActionScript tutorial? I don't mean one like FlashKit's, all they have are examples of how to make certain ActionScript effects. What I am trying to do with this is create a button with 3 parts:

First is the Email button, when the person clicks on it, a mailto:kevlar@gamebox.net and an "x" slide out from beneath the "email button. If the person clicks on the mailto button, a mail prompt will open. If he clicks on the "x" part, the mailto and "x" buttons will slide back under the "email" button. So, can anyone help?

I am trying to make a button for my signature:

First, i would make three buttons, the email 1, the mailto one, and the x one

then, i would create a new symbol movie clip and insert the two x and mailto buttons behind the email button, so they would be hidden by it

actually, id need 2 movie clips, one would have the 2 buttons slide out of the email thing (mouseover) and the other would ahve the thing slide under

then, i would make the final button: with the default email button on the first frame, onmouseover is the first slide out movie clip, on mouse out is the second slide in movie clip, and the mailto and x buttons would still keep their effect, correct?

So basically, would it be an email button, onmouse over 2 buttons (x and mailto) slide out of it and wait to be clicked. If the person clicks on the mailto, an email prompt will appear. If he clicks on the x, it will slide back in?

Using Flash For A While, Questions On Easy Updated Flash Pages.
I use flash mainly for making intercompany training materials. I wanted to build some sites for some people but what is the best way to make the content (just the text) easily updated for people who don't have the FLA's or know flash.

I was thinking of all text areas would pull in the text from .txt file, but not sure what is the best way for someone with little computer or web skill to easly update a txt file.

Would they have to upload the text file, is there some kind of wysiwyg editor that would put in bold tags etc and create txt files dynamically?

A Few Questions About My Flash Website
Hi! As you can see from my name, I suck at flash. this is the very bad 1st ever website I made after 2 days of playing around with the trail version of flash http://www.geocities.com/misterperun/web.html

1st question - after the movie ends and begings again (its on loop) the movie disappears for about .5 second and the screen is blank for that time. How can i fix that?

2nd question - how do i make hyperlinks? the "getURL" action thingy and all other actionsscripts are gray and wont work! what am i doing wrong?

3rd semi-question - what can i improve in my panethic website?

FLASH SITE QUESTIONS
hi,
i was wondering about building full flash websites. I have tried a couple of my ideas out in flash just expirementing, never actually released as more trash into the internet's giant trash can. I had a couple questions.

-what is that font that almost every single flash 5 website i have been to uses? its like a futuristic, small, robotic text?
-when i publish my flash 5 site, how do i have it pop up seperate from a web page and actually play with the sizing of the window so you don't see the stuff i leave outside of the window in my movies.
-is there a way of blocking people from resizing my windows?
-and last but not least any generic tips you pro's would like to share with me.

Some Basic Flash Questions:
This question relates to page size:

In Flash 5.0 when You open the Movie Properties by double clicking the frame rate in the time line window or by pressing Ctrl + m on a PC, you will se about half way down in that window there is a two button selection method that has MATCH: written to the side of it. There are 2 options that can be selected in relation to page size I understand what it does when you match your movie size to the page (To be printed on) size. But I really don't under stand what the other button does. I think it resizes my canvas to the content on my page but I'm not really sure.....If you can help me out by explain what this button dose I would really appreciate it a lot

General Questions On Going From Mx To Flash 5
I have two questions... when I left on vacation I had to load Flash MX to work on my Flash 5 files.. I saved it using the player 5 format.. now I have two problems that I need to resolve:

1.. I can't pull the files up using flash 5 ... it doesn't recognize the format.. how can I change that because I find mx harder to work with

2. Now anyone accessing the site I wrote... asks if they want to load the Flash Macromedia player 6... so it stops everyone... it still loads the site if you say no but my client doesn't like it... How do I get rid of both of the above and get it back to flash 5.. even though I never published the site other than flash 5 player...

Couple Of Flash Questions
I made something with swish, and then I imported it into FlashMX, but when I preview it, it isn't centered onto the page. How would I get it to be centered onto the page?
Second question is, is their a code for a Flash Forwarder, or Flash Reloader, or Flash Redirector. Something like the HTML one, because after my little clip is done, I want it to forward the people to another page.

A Few Flash Animation Questions
I have recently been looking at http://www.xeofreestyle.com probably 50 million times by now, discecting it over and over again to see all the cool effects. If you have not seen this site yet I suggest you go there now and check it out, it is every flash designers dream. Well maybe not all of yours, but mine for sure. This may sound absurd to you but I am currently still in my newbie stages of flash development, so take that into consideration when judging me. So far I haven't seen anything better yet. If anyone has any cool links to flash pages could they post some of those too?

Anyways, to get back on track with my question. One thing that I cannot figure out is how they make those cool buttons. How do you create buttons that interact with the environment, when the user guides the mouse over them? Like the ones on http://www.xeofreestyle.com and http://www.xeofreestyle.com/2000.

One more little thing is bothering me. I cannot make circles that rotate all the way around. On XeoFreestyle theirs look smooth and spin nicely, when I make mine they look really choppy and unprofessional, how can I correct this?

Flash Site Questions
Hey guys,
I am new to flash. I have made some flash movies, but never a flash site, and that is what I am trying to do now. When I am making the site do I make each page a new scene, or do I just use the goto to send the user to a different frame within the same scene. Seems like I would want them to be new scenes. Also I tried making my menu on the first frame, but I am using text as the links. I had "members" as the text and I wanted it to go to the members page when clicked. I tried the code, but I am sure it is wrong.

Whenever i test this it works, but the movie just loops. Even with out clicking, it just keeps going back and forth. What am I doing wrong? Scene 1, frame 1 is the main page, and then scene 2 frame 1 is the members page what do I do to get these to work correctly?

Flash MX Website Questions
Hey im making a flash website with Flash MX, im just wondering is there an easy way to go about it, are there any short cuts etc..
e.g. Theres all the links in the nav on the left, if i was to ever 1day add a new link in there or edit some text, is there a way so when i edit it, it edit's every single flash page, or do i have to open every single one individually to fix them all up ?.

Also, is there anything out there to list "Current Forum Threads", e.g. the top 10 active threads in a forum, by automatically doing it with a script ?

any other tips would be helpfull, cheers

2 Questions About Flash Forms
I am a real noob to making forms in flash.
i have made this page:

when the form is filled out and you press the send button, it will open up in a new window an ASP page (that will eventually email me the results, but i need to get the flash working first before i integrate that into it). Right now the ASP page will display the user's entries into the form fields.

right now all of that works.

but...

Problem one:

when you go to this site, and click the "Request a Demo" link, it opens the demo.htm file that i reference above, inside of a frame. Now when you fill out the form, the ASP page does not grab any of the variables.
I am sending the form information with an on(Release) action applied to the send button. the send button uses a getURL to POST the information in a _blank window.
I am at a loss as to why when the file is in the frameset it will not work, but when opened by itself it does work.

Problem two:
I am unsure how to have Flash check and see if the value of an input text field is equal to nothing (basically, i am using flash to validate if all of the required fields are filled in.
here is the actionscript that i have applied to the send button:

Right now, it will validate the dropdown list on the page (which it's value is equal to "varHear" and since "Select One" is the default setting, that means the user did not select anything, and so it will go to frame number 2 in the movie clip MessageBox which informs the user that they did not complete all the required fields.

But, the text box does not work the same way. varName is the Name: field in the form. i need to know how to have it check and see if the value of varName is not equal to anything. i have tried these: 0 "0" "" and none of these work.

does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on why these are happening. (sorry for the long post, but i just want to be sure to give as much information as i can the first time around.)

A Few Simple Flash MX Questions
My objective is to have all these 5 files to appear the Flash way very attractively on my page.

question 1: I want to import 5 jpg files in sequence file name from 1 to 5 into Flash, I start a new blank page and then I import those files. then all 5 files stacks together in the middle of the new page, how do I crop the page or trim the canvas to fit them nicely, or is there another way to do it? Please help me.

question 2: How to stop them from looping endlessly, I try and try but it still loops?

I want to animate the little Metal and plastic orb on the top left corner of my content page into flash but everytime i export it from photoshop to Flash it become solied color and i lose the transparency. Ive tryied a lots of things but nothings seems to work.

Could any1 help me please ? any way to do that ?

2 Small Flash MX Questions.
Why is it when I open the Library window, attach to my existing panels and save the panel set, when I quit and reopen flash, load my panel set, the Library is Never there? Is the Library seperate from the panels and cannot be saved?

Also, what is the largest stage size I can create? I'm doing a flash/vector comic and would like as large of an area that I can work on.

Ps, Why the hell is there that gray area that surrounds the stage that hides anything you put in it? How annoying.

General Flash Questions
Hi All

I have used Swish V2.0 to create my website, unfortuantly, Swish does not give me the functionallity that I am looking for, so I would like to know if the following are possible in Flash MX.

1. Is it possible to create display boxes that allow html files to be viewed and scrolled, I.E information pages. (For example, I want to create just one information box that autmatically changes to the correct html file depending on the link that is chosen. I did use a plugin within Swish for this but it started to get very messay, as I had about 14 info pages, meaning had had to have 14 sprites and 14 Fla/ SWI files, this is no use to me.)

2. Is it easier to create, fully functioning Guestbooks, contact forms and registration forms in Flash MX, where the information in the Guestbook would either go to a database or text file, and the Contact Form and registration form would be emailed to a specific email address.

3. Is it possible to use asp and such with Flash MX for news sections on my website.

If all of the above is possible, can I import my website from swish to Flash or will I have to redo it, if it is not possible how do you guys go about getting this type of functionallity within your sites.
