Flash Screensaver Doesn't Run In Local User Mode
Hi, I'm not sure if anyone could give me some tips. I've used a screensaver maker program to create a flash screensaver. The flash piece is just animation. No sound, no file/network access of any kind (such as read/write). When I login to the computer as an administrator, the screensaver runs just fine. However, when I login as a local user (without administrative rights) the screensaver does not run.I contacted tech support of the program but they say it works fine on their computer. Well, as I said, it works fine here, too, as long as you have administrative rights.Just as a test, I created a screensaver with images only (no flash content) and that runs fine. This tells me that the screensaver (scr) itself is good, however there might be an issue with flash running in local user mode (no admin rights at login).I've tried to adjust flash's security settings via adobe's flash panel (somewhere on their website) but it didn't help. Is there some sort of security settings I need to be aware of whereas flash screensavers don't run unless you are logged in to your computer as an administrator?Thanks!--LES

Flash Song Player Working In Local Mode, But Doesn't Up On Web.
Hey guys,
I've just launched a band website and it has a song player in it. The way it works is that it loads external songs
myMusic.loadSound("song name here.mp3",false);
It works fine when I preview it in dreamweaver, but once I load it up onto the web the songs don't work.
www.listentolovelybones.com
It's weird, I've loaded the swf, the index.html, all the songs that are being linked to up onto the server. But it just doesn't work. everything else works fine, except this.
I read somewhere saying you have to declare that domain and subdomain because of some weird cross streaming security issue.
PLEASE HELP!!!
Cheers

User Defines Local Image And Add It To A Local Swf(CD) ?
I have to run flash (swf) locally, which in my case means a CD.
What I want to do is allow the user to have a browse (local) function and pick an image from his hard disk and use that image to see a flash movie (swf) with his/her selected image in it!
Then after the user watched the movie with his/her photo on it, the user should be able to send this movie in a site(upload it). then naturally the user should be able to see it online at that site as well!
So my questions are how to have a browse function that puts the selected image somewhere I would like it to and then use this image in a flash movie (that will be a game with the photo on it).
And I guess then to send it online I do not really have to publish a new swf with the image in it, I can send seperately the swf (game) and the image file to the server through php? Did i get that right?
So far I know flash 8 has a new class for browsing, but how do I take a file selected from a user locally and use it in the movie again locally? load variable can do that but I should know the name of the file selected and also be possible to even select a local file??
Basically it is for educational movie. It will run from a CD. there will be many interactive exercices. At the end of the section there will be one game that in order to make it more personal I want to allow the users to add their photo at the game. So far everything should take place locally. Then if the user desires should be able to send in a specific site the movie he/she just watched(which means with their photo in it).
ANy ideas how I do that.
Even general ideas will help!
Thank you
Flash Access User-selected Local Files
Hi,
I'm trying to make design a music player which allows the user to play there own music from their hard drive. I would like them to be able to select a particular song from their collection, or a folder. Can this be done?
Would it use the fileReference class? If so, how do you do that?
Any ideas,
Thanks.

User Agreement Screensaver
Hello, Hello!
I need to add a User Agreement to a Screensaver. I have created the User Agreement and the "Disagree" button exits out of the screen, however, where do I have my "Agree" button lead to?
The Screensaver(s) (for both MAC and PC) will be on a CD-Rom. I will have this User Agreement to self execute once someone puts the CD in their computer. Normally, I had the Screensaver self execute. But, now this USer AGreement thing is getting in the way.
How can I have my "Agree" button somehow launch the appropriate Screensaver???
I used Screentime for Flash to create these Screensavers (a thrid party software). All is great, I just need to get from the User Agreement to the actual screenaver.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thank you!
Can Flash Store Data In Flat File On User's Local Machine?
I am developing a CD ROm training piece and need to know if it's at all possible for Flash to store data on the user's machine in a flat comma delimited file without the use of any server side languages?
I need to store a user record with about 5 fields. The user would pop the CD in, take the lesson and, ideally the responses from the lesson would be stored in a local text file.
Is that possible? If so, how?
Thanks
Flash "screensaver" That Pops Up When User Is Idle
I am wondering if there is a way to build a flash screensaver. Basically it would be a movie clip or layer that starts to play if the user is idle for a certain time, and when the mouse is moved, it would go back to the layer or frame that the user was on previoiusly.
[F8] What To Do If User Doesn't Have Flash Installed?
OK, I have built a website for a mate's pub, he wanted me to put his menu on the website, so I did it using flash. I put the site online a couple of days ago, the problem I have is that someone just rang the pub saying they couldn't see the menu. So basically I want to have something that perhaps says "If you can see this then you do not have the flash plugin required, please download the flash plugin or alternatively view a non-flash version of the menu here"..summat like that anyway.
How would I go about doing this? If someone could point me in the right direction I'd be greatful. I did try to search these forums for the answer but had no luck...searching for "No flash" doesn't really get me anywhere lol
Thanks in advance,
Baz
PS: Not sure if it makes any difference but I used the swfObject jscript hack to embed the flash file
Swapping To A .gif If User Doesn't Have Flash Plug-in?
I've heard that an actionscript exists that allows you to have a .swf swap for a .gif/.jpeg if the user doesn't have flash. Anybody able to help me out?
My site is mostly HTML but does have some flash banners, etc. I would like this site to degrade gracefully if the user doesn't have the flash plug-in. How can I have a .gif image of my banner appear if they don't have flash? I don't want to have to design both an HTML and a Flash version of my site.
Can I Have JPG On Page If User Doesn't Have Flash Player?
Hi,
I was wondering if there's a way to place a static JPG or GIF on a page if the user doesn't have Flash Player. I have an animation .swf file, but in case the user doesn't have Flash Player, I just don't want them to come across a site & see an empty icon or a non-working Flash site. I'd want them to see a JPG or GIF.
Thanks!

If A User Doesn't Have Flash, GIF File Shows Up?
I have honestly never heard of this, but someone told me awhile ago that when you publish the .swf file from flash you can check an option that will give you code to replace the .swf with a .gif if the user does not have flash.
Is this true? I tried to search, but I really had no clue what to search for.
Thanks guys..
What Tags Do I Use To Show An Image If The User Doesn´t Have Flash Installed?
I want to put a flash animated image in an html website. But, if the user who is viewing the website doesn´t have flash installed, I want them to be able to see a static html version of my image and not just a blank space. Can someone tell me what code I need to use for this? Thank you in advance for your help and advice!

Why Doesn't Object Drawing Mode Stay On?
Even when I draw shapes using Object Drawing and leave it turned on, some shapes will randomly act as though I'm using Merge mode. For example, if I marquee-select several shapes on a layer and apply a shape tween, some of the objects will become split where I dragged the marquee box and the parts will do their own, separate tweens.
Am I doing something wrong or is this just another quirk?
Loading User-specified Mp3 Off Local Hard-drive
All this pertains to AS3 and Flash CS3.
Ok, so I'm trying to make some sort of dynamic mp3 loader, where the user can browse his/her hard-drive and have flash play back the mp3. So far I have a FileReference object and the file browsing functionality is working fine. However, all the stuff I've been reading leads me to believe that what I have to do is upload the user-selected mp3 to some server, then download it back into flash's memory so I can play it back.
But is there any way I can just skip the uploading and downloading process and just use the mp3 as is? It seems to me that uploading a file then downloading it back is a bit redundant.

Loading Local User-Selected Image
Hi all, after much digging I cannot seem to find a way to allow the user to select an image from their local filesystem which can then be loaded into memory merely for display.
I do not want to upload this image or store it anywhere except in memory, simply as an overlay. FileReference.browse() doesn't allow me to get the filepath to the image selected for security reasons, so how can I implement similar functionality?
User Login - Writing Local Files From CD-ROM.
I'm working on a program that is going on CD and the web. The client wants to be able to have users enter a name and password, have the info saved locally and save some user data locally that can be accessed later. I looking for the best way to do this.
I've looked into using Shared Objects as well as using Third Party software like SWF Studio.
Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to handle this? I do not think the Shared Object will accomplish what I need to and I really prefer not using Third Party software. There is always the idea of using Director but I really do not want to do that either. The web version should be rather simple using Flash/PHP/XML or MySQL but I'm lost for the local CD version. Ideas?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Simple Mode And Advanced Mode In Flash
This is something i've been putting up with so long now, i'm far from fluent in actionscript even the basics I tend to forget if I haven't used flash for a while but in other releases of flash their has always been too modes for actionscripting - advanced mode and simple mode. With flash mx (2004 pro) I have looked and looked and scoured google and i've never been able to find out how to change it to simple mode. I prefer being able to just choose from a dropdown or a list or whatever it is what actions I want rather than typing it all in myself. I'm even thinking of going back a few versions of flash to get this feature back. I haven't used flash for a good 7/8 months now and i'm struggling to do simple things like rollovers leading to different scenes.
this is what it looks like in previous versions of flash:
but in mx it isn't their now and i've looede through all the preferences:

Local Connection - Works With Swf Doesn't In HTML
Hello,
I'm having an issue where I have an application that pops up a display engine and communicates with the backend via the application that popped it up.
I am using a local connection to do the communication and have been testing it in flash. As soon as I test the application embedded in HTML the communication stops working. I make sure to close the swf instances before trying the html version to avoid catching the communication in the wrong place.
The weird thing is if I have the application open in html and run the engine in flash the communication works. As soon as I try it both in HTML pages it stops working. Am I missing something obvious?
Thanks
Please Help OnMetadata Doesn't Work With Local File?
Thanks for reading. I have a very annoying problem with onMetadata in AS3. I can't seem to read duration of FLV/MP4 that I am loading locally (from local harddrive).
The code:
Code:
var mediadata:Object = new Object();
mediadata.onMetaData = onMetaDataHandler;
stream_ns.client = mediadata;
function onMetaDataHandler(meta:Object):void {
totaltime = meta.info.duration;
trace("totaltime: "+String(totaltime));
}
stream_ns is a Netstream object.
The FLV/MP4 movies are playing just fine, and the "stream_ns.time" property is working just fine, but the "totaltime" variable is always 0 (zero). The function "onMetaDataHandler" was never called (no trace on that). The FLV that I have was created with Flash Video Encoder (it embeds metadata, right?).
I'm not using any components.
Anyone has any problem detecting video duration from local files?
Thanks in advance!

Interactive State Map Doesn't Retain User Selection After Postback
Hello,
I am using an interactive US map in Flash for a dealer locator on my website. When a state is selected, I have it set to show an alternate color for that state using loadClip inside of the onRelease function. inside the onRelease, i also have getURL, which directs to an aspx page for the selected state.
When the new page loads for that state, the page does a postback, and the selected state does not show anymore. How can I pass the selected state info to the aspx page so the flash map on that page shows what the user selected?
here are a couple of lines from the actionscript on the map:
nv_btn.onRelease = function () {
_level0.myMCL.loadClip("states/nv.swf", 10); getURL("wheretobuy.aspx?state=NV",_self);
}
ut_btn.onRelease = function () {
_level0.myMCL.loadClip("states/ut.swf", 10); getURL("wheretobuy.aspx?state=UT",_self);
}
thanks,
tommy
ps...im very new to this, so i'm sorry if i suck at explaining it.
Save User`s "info" To Local Disk =Sol File
ok after asking in the forum for help with saving varables to a text file on the users local computer. I was told it cannot be done without the aid of a script or backend system to write the data.
this i thought was my only option for saving the information i needed.
I now want to eat my Hat and words, Because it can be done without the aid of a script or php,asp etc, all one needs is Flash MX and flash player 6 and up. ok enough rambaling lets do this........
SharedObject
Macromedia introduced shared objects with Flash MX. and works with flash player 6 and upwards! you need to find out what player the user has with action script or any other method before invokeing this command.
The shared object gives us the tools for storing actionscript data on the end user`s computer sharedObject supports local and remote, im dealing with local storage here, sharedOject, supports the following datatypes: number,string,boolean,undefined,null,array, and object.
Like cookies, shared objects are used to maintain data persistence. The object data is stored in an .sol file on the user's hard drive in the same directory as the Flash MX player. The files are stored in folders corresponding to the domain that generated the Flash movie.
here is some code i found for creating a two text box imput for name and email storing on a local system. play around with this and you will find you can do everything you require localy, even i may add somethings you shouldent.
on frame one of the movie add this code:
// Action script for sharedobject
// [Action in Frame 1]
if (init == null)
{
init = true;
so = SharedObject.getLocal("smooow.com/sharedObject");
if (so.data.name != null && so.data.email != null)
{
txtName.Text = so.data.name;
txtEmail.Text = so.data.email;
} //
}
ok next on your button called submit add this code to it :
// Action script for button
on (press)
{
if (txtName != null && txtEmail != null)
{
so.data.name = txtName.Text;
so.data.email = txtEmail.Text;
so.flush();
} // end if
}
ok thats all there is two it if you require more help with this do a google for "Sol"+sharedObject
and you will find some tutorials on sharedobjects, i hope this helps all the people like myself that simply want to store there arrays to a local txt like file

Normal Mode Vs. Expert Mode? And Actionscript In General.
If anyone can help, please do because I'm going crazy and I've been losing sleep and going through some mild depression. I know it sounds ridiculous, but actionscript is not my friend right now. I'm a designer, not a programmer and I'm just NOT getting actionscript. I've purchased 3 books on the subject and I'm still confused. One book will tell me to start off using "Normal Mode" so I can just select the actions on the left side of the "actions window". Another book will tell that I should immediately switch to "Expert Mode" because that's the best way to learn actionscript.
I'd rather learn how to type in the code instead of clicking on pre-made actions. I was wondering if you guys actually type all of your code in manually or do you occasionally use the given commands on the left side. I need to know so I can decide on how to approach actionscript.
Another thing, does anyone know a good on-line site where I could get the basics of actionscript. To be honest, what I need actionscript to do for me right now is to build a simple horizontal sliding menu. I've plenty of these on several "tutorial" sites but I want to make my own but I need the basic knowledge to do so. What should I start to learn right off the bat? Variables, properties...? Oh, and when I want to set a variable do I type var = x; or do I type Set variable = x. I'm confused. Please help.
Action Script - Normal Mode Vs Expert Mode
Hi I am still using flash MX as when I upgraded to flash MX 2004 profesional have found it really difficult to actionscript since I never found the way how to switch to the normal mode available in Flash MX does it exist or has it been completly removed ?
Does flash 8 has the same feature missing ?

Toggling Between Expert Mode And Normal Mode?
toggling between expert mode and normal mode?
I just switched from MX to MX 2004. BIG improvement but as you all know when you switch programs there is a learning curve. Is there a way to switch back and forth between normal mode and expert mode in you r action script panel? It seems to only have expert mode and I by no means am an expert scripter.
Any help?
thanks

Flash Screensaver
Does anyone know how to reliably launch a website from a Flash screensaver on both Mac and PC? I am creating a screensaver for a company and they want to have there web address clickable, and for some reason once you create the screensaver it doesn't work. It's almost as if the swf has to be in the player or in a browser to work.
I Want A Win Screensaver In Flash
Howdy,
The story so far, I’ve created a logo for myself and converted it into a font, I’ve then gone into my desktop properties (Win2000) and selected the flying text screensaver then selected my logo font as the text and I’m now seeing my logo being thrown about all over the screen as a screensaver.
I like this effect so much I want to have it on my web site, so the question is can I get this effect in Flash using AS instead of having loads of tweens? I want it to rotate, spin, see saw and bounce off the sides..now the only thing is that I will have to create the logo in a 3d prog then import into Flash.
Any ideas? If you have windows then select the flying text screensaver and that will give an idea of what I’m looking for.
Many thanks

Flash As Screensaver?
Is it possible to get some software that will make a swf file into a screensaver, or use the flashplayer itself as a screensaver.

Any help would be much appreciated.
Flash As A Screensaver
I just made a flash movie and I am wondering if there is a way to set it as my screensaver? Should it be an movie? Or Flash? Exe? Then i don't know where to put it.
Thanks!
Flash Screensaver
I have a flash exe that has been converted to be a screensaver. When the screensaver is active, a user can click a button to increment a number (this tracks the amount of cigarettes they have smoked in a day)
However, each time the screensaver comes back the counter is set back to zero - it won't retain the number from the previous time it was on.
Although I realise it would be set back to zero if the machine is rebooted, is there anyway to maintain the counter while the machine is on i.e. throughout the day.
Thanks
Micheal
