Friends Of Ed - XML Question
Has anyone gone over the XML for Data and Design section in the book Flash 5 Actionscript Studio book by Friends of ED?
If you have read it:
My question is, How could you convert/replace the incremented number navigation to display the title of the stories. Should I reference the multi-dimensional array or store them into more variables and display them that way? Am I even going in the right direction to display the story titles? Please help!!!!!!

when I click on my button, it says that i = 5, but on my first trace statement it is dynamic according to what sub1Var equals, why would this be? Does the for loop with the j statement through it off?

Class Friends
I need to make one of my classes called Point_obj a friend of my other class called Line_obj.
then I need to define a variable called myPos of type Point_obj.
Point_obj will contain some functions like get_fake_pos() or get_real_pos.

Arrays Are My Friends, Right?
Okay, I've used arrays in the past, but I'm still very leery of screwing things up. The code below is my usual long-way-around the barn approach. I know that putting the buttons in an array is a first step, but then how to get it to advance to the next numeric frame is where I get nervous (every button points to a frame starting on two, so button two points to frame 3, and so on). I know I can use keyframes/labels but I don't want to have to repeat the AS for each new keyframe on my AS layer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

SEO And Flash, Can They Ever Be Friends
Hi All,
I have recently been questioning the SEO side of things; and am currently trying to better optimize my site. I use quite a lot of flash on my site, and it sorted dawned on me that Flash is doing me no favours when it comes down to SEO - I will need to get a good ranking, as this year I will be putting a lot of money and time into making our site a success story ;)
Am I a little green on this or what?
Anyone know any tips/tricks on how best to bring SEO and Flash together, to better work in page ranking?
What do folks with totally 100% Flash sites do when it comes down to SEO? As there is only a few meta tags and title tag available?
I love Flash, and would never let go! However, this SEO thing will always be a "Flash Avoidance" for new clients; how can one best assure them that Flash provides more than just a better brand image?
A few weeks ago, a potential client stated "I would never have a flash menu".

Heres what i would like to do...
in your friends section on myspace, i would like to put a flash file there...which of course i can do
what i would like to do is maybe make an xml file for each of my friends, and the flash file randomly chooses friends and shows their pic and info and stuff

Hmm so much to choose from, I finished "Foundation Actionscript" by friends of ED a few months ago and saved enough money to buy another book. I liked the book so well I think I'll go along and buy another one from the same guys. SO...
Which one should I get?
I took a look at Actionscript Studio (next one up right?) and it looks like almost the same as foundation except somethin on XML and maybe 3d?
I'm open to any book that they sell that relates to flash, including the PHP and XML, except the ones that are just plain flash (not actionscript).. I might be wrong but I think I know most of the content on there.

A real shame they've produced a generally excellent collection of flash books (and others) for just about all user levels. if you've been considering buying any titles recently it might be a good idea to do it now while the books are still available.

Scroll Bar Issue (Help Mac Friends)
Hey Doods - It was brought to my attention that I had an issue with a scroll bar not working on an Apple. I have quickly rewritten the scrollbar which can be viewed at the link below. The first scroll bar is my original that does not work well on the Mac. The second is the new one. I don't have a Mac so I cannot test this myself. The specs people were having problems on are OS 10.4.4 under both Safari and Firefox. Please let me know by saying 1 = fails, 2 = works or something like that.

[cs3] Please Help Me Friends – Button Question

TabIndex And Focus... Not Friends?
Hey, Im having an issue with my tabbing in a Form I partially created.
I'm working from a template which uses onSetFocus and onKillFocus functions to make labels appear and disappear when you click in a field.
I added tabChildren, tabEnabled, and tabIndex commands because it was tabbing out of the movie on the original.
It will now tab through all fields, but you have to hit tab TWICE EACH TIME.
I cant figure out why. Where does the cursor go in between?
Any ideas from the masters?

Search Engine To Retrieve Our Old Friends In A DB
I have posted this on other forums but I want to have the maximum chances to solve my problem.
I am facing a challenge which deadline is May 15.
Goal is to build in Flash a search engine able to retrieve in a MySQL DB a student amongst the students present in my School over a period of five years. I have also exported the DB in XML which results in a 350K File, just to say that I am not stuck with MySQL and that I can contemplate an XML driven solution.
The DB is filled with almost 700 Entries in a Table which Fields are: ID, lastName, firstName, promo (French equivalent of "class of"), joining (year the student join the promo-"class of"), street, city, postalCode ("ZIP" code), country, phone, email, webSite, notes.
In my FLA, I have already created the two mandatory Input Fields [ 'sLastName', variable 'nom' (which means Last Name in French) and 'sFirstName', variable 'prenom' (which means First Name in French). Two Input Fields are necessary to differentiate brothers having the same Last Name...
I have also created the Dynamic Fields to receive the pertinent informations found in the DB. These Fields have the very same Names as the DB Fields. Variable names for their content are not yet assigned (are they necessary?).
I know how to load the XML, but no more :-(((
In FlashMX ActionScript, what I don't know (and understand despite the numerous search I made in many tutorials) is how to ask the DB for the two Input Fields content and if they are found in the DB how to pass them (with ALL the above mentioned associated Fields content) to the SWF and display them in the appropriate Dynamic Fields).

i need to perform a dynamic multiple line chart based on XML Data.. the XML Data will be like this

Edit Width + Height Of Friends Flash Design?
Hi, I am having a problem editing the width and height of a friend's flash design. (By the way, I haven't done flash in a very long time, so I don't remember a lot of features.) Basically, what I want to do is change the whole flash effect to 800 by 200. Currently, the design is 450 by 253. How can I change it?
Here is what I tried. First I selected "Edit Multiple Frames" and then clicked "Modify Onion Markers" and selected the "Onion All" option. Then I just changed the width and height in properties. Nothing appeared to change except the handles moved. (By handles I mean when you use the free transform tool the handles appear to allow you to resize the object.) Nothing changed. After this I just tried to change the width and height without the "Edit Multiple Frames" option and it just made big white spaces around the design.
How can I change the width and height of the whole flash design and effects inside? Just like resizing a photo in photoshop? Please help! Thanks!
