Can I Do A Mask With A Gradient?
I want to have a nice soft effect with my mask.

I want the mask to be a gradient, so that the image that is being revealed gradually appears. I tried to set one side of the gradient as transparent to achieve this.

I tried this, but it doesn't seem to work?

Is there an answer?

Using Gradient With Mask
I'm pretty new to Flash MX and 'm trying to figure out how to make a mask to text with gradient effects. I've followed two of the tutorials but I can't find a way to change the angle on the gradient. The tutorial talks about Fill Editor Tool but I can't simply find it. I really like the effect and I can make it angeled by increasing the size of the layer with gradient and then use free transform tool, but..........

is it possible to mask with a gradient so that the part of the image that shows up is like tapered down to 1 or 0%? or does the masked portion only show up as 100%? what im trying to make is a line to follow an outline of a photo, and the tail end of the line would look great if it faded to nothing. almost like pointer trails with the pointer being 100% and the end trail being 1% or 0%. anybody understand what im getting at, or am i just telling a story to a dog.... can anybody help me?

Please Help With Gradient Mask
I am attempting to create an effect where as an image scroll off screen it will slowly fade off.

I thought about it and I think having a gradient mask above the layer would best simulate the effect. However I am having trouble getting it to work.

The process I took was I created a new graphic symbol of a rectangle, gradient filled it with white on one edge and black on the other edge (assuming white = 100% opacity); I placed the symbol on top of the image layer and changed it to mask, but I don't see the effect.

Can you tell me what I did wrong? And is there a way to create a mask that effects all the layers below it instead of just one?

I'm fairly new to flash but I have a question that is a little more complex than I can handle. In my animation I have a free hanging lamp thats emiting light onto the background. the lamp swings in the breeze therefore the light must also swing. Is there anyway to creat this effect. I though of a gradient mask but I don't know if they exist. I've also check into the possibility of an adjustment layer like in photoshop or aftereffects. Any help you can give would be appreciated.

I know the thread title is dumb, but I don't know exactly how to do what I want or what it would be called.

What I'm thinking of is a type of alpha fade in for some text, however I'd like it to fade in from the top left to the bottom right. Actually, just knowing how to fade it from top to bottom or left to right would be good.

I know a Mask can do a reveal effect, but I want it to do a fade in reveal. Like the top fades in first and works it's way down, fading in all the way to the bottom of the letter.

Can a Mask have an gradient? I just don't know how you would do that.

If anyone can give me a point in the right direction, I would be very grateful. Thanks.

There isn't away that I have found to achieve an effect like this. Though I have seen other websites that have ahieved the effect I am looking for. Basically it deals with letters, like A for example.

The mask would make it look like the A is somewhat showing up with a radial mask, with corners blending into the background until the full letter is shown.

I will work on presenting an example of what I am talking about. In the mean time if any of you grasp what I am trying to say just by reading this, feel free to lend me your advice. Thanks a lot.

I am sure I was able to do these in previous versions of flash? Yet in MX I am completely lost. I make a gradient that fades black to transparent and make it as mask, alas, no gradient effect within mask? I try white to transparent, alas, no gradient effect within mask? I even tried importing a simple gradient from illustrator, alas, no gradient in mask?

Any help would be appreciated.

ok so I am trying to make a mask that has feathered edges. I thought it would be like photoshops masks, but its not. Is there a way to make a mask that fades on the top and bottom? This is the effect I am trying to achieve more or less.

It works properly on the scene 1. However, when I put this animation on a movie clip, the gradient doesn't work. I've tried to add the movie clip instance name in the code, but still doesn't work.

Mask/Gradient Question?
I have some text that I want to make a mask layer.
I have several lines done my different text tool options (I clicked on the text too several times) and moved the text to where I wanted it! The problem is that when I try to turn that layer into a mask...only a couple words turn into a mask. WHy is that?..I tried grouping all the text together..making it a graphic..everything I could think of. Can someone tell me how to fix this? Thanks. -whispers-

Transparency Gradient Mask
I made one (a gradient that is 100% alpha to 0%)in photoshop maybe a year ago to use in flash as a mask that could slid in and make something slowly appear instead of all at once. The problem is, I can't for the life of me figure out how to recreate it. I vaguely remember that it had to do with what file type i saved it as from photoshop, but I've tried em all and they don't work! Any help on this would be appreciated.

Is it possible to apply gradient colors to lines? Another way to do it would be to mask outlines. Unfortunately, both are not possible. The effect i'm looking for is similar to xs-engineering.com line effects...i.e. the effects placed on each car...

Is there any way to make a mask so that the masked item (say a background image) can fade in cleanly with a clear gradient??

Is it at all possible to create a mask that includes a gradiently-transparent fill? For example, if I wanted to make text appear as though it were fading out from right to left or vice versa. When I attempted to do something like this, I initially tried creating a masking area with a linear gradient fill with one end set to 100% alpha and the other set to 0%. One would think that placing this masking area over a row of text would cause the desired effect. However, the mask behaved as though it were simply a solid fill. Does anyone have any suggestions or know of a sure-fire way to produce the desired effect? Thanks very much!

Gradient Mask Won't Work
I have a logo in PNG format that I have imported into MX. I made the PNG a symbol and then created a new layer above it that was a block with a gradient with alpha, similar to the tutorial here: http://www.newtutorials.com/cool-masking-effect.htm

This will not work for me. It always just works as a regular mask with sharp edges. Any help would be greatly apprecaited. I have went through about 4 tutorials for this and it just won't work.

Help With Gradient Layer Mask

I have a website I'm redesigning and I cannot locate an original fla file for the moutonotopia text that scrolls across the top of this page (have a look at the link). I've gone back into flash but I can't seem to get the mask to be transparent in the center and opaque on the outside edges in order to get the effect I'm looking for.

What I have done is create a symbol that is a movie clip consisting of a sphere that I have deleted the outline from and filled with the gradient fill in the tool menu. This I have placed on the time line in the layer above the text which is 20 frames long. I have motion tweened the sphere and in the layer properties changed the sphere to mask and the text below it to masked, then locked both layers.

What I get is a solid mask without the gradient edges I created previously.

Any help to figure this out will be greatly appreciated, I deserve to be kicked for not having kept the original file handy, or having taken notes on how I did what I did, but that's another story...

in Photoshop you can add a gradient mask to an image so that you can fade it out in one direction. is this possible in flash and if so how?
i tried bringing it in from photoshop but where it should be faded out it replaces it with the colour white.

[CS3]gradient Alpha Mask
Ive seen a couple of tutorials about creating gradient alpha masks and the results are really cool looking.

I would love to use this technique on a website I am developing for a client. Ideally I would like to use it on a slideshow that loads a list of images from a database and then loads each .jpg individually.

The problem I would have is that I dont know how to apply the mask to dynamically loaded movies.. could anyone point me in the right direction as far as the logic is concerned or recommend a good tutorial>

I'm trying to do this but forgot how... I have an MC on the main timeline called "SmartPerson" inside I have MC_mask and MC_square.

On the main timeline I have

SmartPerson.MC_mask.cacheAsBitmap = true;
SmartPerson.MC_square.cacheAsBitmap = true;
SmartPerson.MC_square.setMask("SmartPerson.MC_mask ");

When I run the movie nothing happens. The images don't display at all... Any ideas?
