Graphic/movie Symbols For STATIC Images?
When you want to make a static (ie not animated) graphic or pic into a symbol, is there any point in choosing the graphic symbol option? The movie clip option seems to offer everything offered by the graphic symbol option but with xtra features (sound etc). Am I missing something? What is the point of the graphic symbol option? There must be a reason for using it in preference to the movie clip option, in some cases. Any suggestions welcome. Ta

Movie Vs Graphic Symbols? Advantages/disadvantages?
I was just wondering when its better to use a graphic symbol over a movie clip. From what I've seen movie clips can do the same thing as graphic symbols, but have a lot more versatility. You can give movie clips an instance name, and I've had problems tweening components embedded in a graphic symbol that are fine when embedded in movie clips.

Is there any time that it would be better to use a graphic symbol? Will they result in a lower file size or something? What is your opinion?

Poll: Do You Use Graphic Symbols, Or Movie Clips For Animations In Your Movies?
Hey all, I usualy use Movie clips when I'm making a website, but recently I've started using Graphic symbols when I'm creating animations because it allows me to preview the animation in the timeline, and I can control it's location without adding any code to the script.

What do you guys think about this anyone else do this?

Dynamically Change Styles, Bitmaps, Graphic Symbols, Etc... In A Flash Movie
Hello,

I'm trying to come up with a way to dynamically change all styles of a Flash movie - basically skin the movie. I will not only need to change the styles of components, but also of graphic symbols, bitmaps, fonts, etc... I will need to change the styles based on a skin the user chooses. Since the library contains all of the symbols, I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to implement a shared library that dynamically changes when the user selects a different skin...is this possible...I've never used shared libraries? Or does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Movie Clip Vs Graphic Vs Compiled Clip Vs Frustration
Hi,

I'm having multiple problems with my new animation, and have been searching for a solution for days now.

First a bit of background:
I tried to be all slick and make a movie clip of a mock debate with my whole animation in it, and then move that around in my main timeline to give the appearance of a camera panning, changing angles, and zooming in and out.

First part of the problem:
The main movie clip has audience noises in it, which are impossible to synch up with the characters' dialogue as the lip synching occurs in movie clips of the characters' heads. (So I've got movie clips inside a movie clip inside my main movie.) I understand that I can see the motion when I make them graphics and must change them back to movie clips to get the audio to work when publishing. That doesn't help me get the speech to synch up well with the audience noises though. I need sound to propagate. I tried compiling the movie clip but that didn't help.

Second part of the problem:
I put the main movie clip on my main timeline and create a motion tween to move it around (see background info above). However, I can't see the motion in the main clip if I don't set it to behave as a graphic (and even then, I can't see the motion of the movies within that clip). The problem is that there are a ton of keyframes and every time I want to preview or publish (to really see all the motion) I have to swich them all back individually to behave as movie clips. This is very time consuming.

AM I MISSING SOMETHING???
Flash can't possibly be this difficult to work with...
Is there no way at all to edit with sound from embedded objects? No components available or anything?

Is there a better way to accomplish my "camera angles" task without having to individually switch every key frame from movie to graphic and then back again?

BTW, I tried to compile the main movie clip first, but since the reference point is in the center, MX 2004 cuts off everything but the bottom right quadrant. It doesn't seem to show movement anyway so I guess that's a moot point. I have no idea how to move the reference point either without moving every single frame in my clip.

Thanks to anyone who even read this whole thing. Any suggestions would be very welcomed.

Help Using Movie Clip Symbols...
Ok i'll try to write my problem as understanding as I can...

In my main movie scene I use a Movie Clip Symbol to play an animation. Now I don't want to loop this animation, but when it ends I want it to go to a frame that is in the main movie. But assigning it as an action won't work, cause it will go to the frame inside the movie clip symbol, not to the main movie! I can't choose any other options wheter it should go to the main movie or stay inside the symbol..

I still use Flash 4 (yes i'm very poor). But don't tell me to get a better version if you don't know how to answer my question. Thanks!

A Problem With Movie Clip Symbols
Alright, i tried asking for help with this once, and no one said anything, so here goes again...

I am making a flash animation out of scanned images I drew with pencil and paper. the idea behind the story is that there are people living in a world created by drawings who are oppressed by the people in control of the pencils. I am trying to make the drawings have a sort of rough, untempered look, having their lines shift every frame as if they are scribbled in. I thought it would be simplest if I just made movie clip symbols out of 2 or 3 different scribbled drawings of the same object for each part of their bodies, so i followed these steps:

1)Inserted a movie clip symbol (obviously).
2)Opened my document containing several drawings of the same object (in this case, a character's head) in a drawing program.
3)Selected and copied one of the images and pasted it onto frame one of the symbol in flash.
4)Broke apart the image and used flash to erase the paper behind the part I want to keep.
5)Inserted a keyframe into the movie clip symbol.
6)Selected the second drawing, pasted it into the second keyframe, broke it apart, and cleaned it up.
7)Put the third image into a third keyframe and did the same to it.
8)Switched to scene 1, added 9 more frames, and selected frame 1.
9)Opened the library and dragged "symbol 1" into the middle.

Now it should have added the other two frames of the movie clip symbol, right? Well, it instead displays the first frame of the movie clip symbol through all 10 frames of scene 1. If you click "play" in the library while symbol 1 is selected, it will show all of the frames, but not while the symbol is in scene 1. What is going wrong and how do I fix it? I'm rather new to flash, so please forgive me if this is a n00bish mistake.

[f8] Nesting Movie Clip Symbols
Hey guys, well i have this character and its a movie clip symbol. so for organization reasons, i want to "nest" my animation, a movie clip within a movie clip.

Now what i WANT to do, is view my animation (tween, keyframes, etc) in my MAIN TIMELINE WINDOW. NOT WHEN I DOUBLE CLICK MY MOVIE CLIP SYMBOL.

Because in my movie clip symbol, there are eyes, mouth, legs, etc. so if i wanted to make him blink, or talk and move at the same time, i would have quite a bit of layers. So, everything works fine when i am animating WITHIN the symbol. So when i go to Scene 1, and i want to resize the character then i can, i dont have to individually make the mouth smaller, eyes etc. Because they would all be on 1 SYMBOL.

So what i want to do again is, VIEW my animation in m MAIN TIME LINE WINDOW. Not the MOVIE CLIP SYMBOL TIMELINE. There must be a preview option or something. When i am in main timeline window, i go to control > play and nothing happens. this will be tedious if i cant find out how to preview in the main window.

i hope you guys know how i can resolve this issue, thx again!

Graphic Symbols
This is a funny question I guess but I'm just curious... when u have a graphic symbol, you have some properties you can change, the one that bugs me is the pull down that has "Loop, Play Once, Single Frame" I've done many sites and I have changed them accordinly... but I have static graphic symbols, if you have these which sometimes I have many to "Loop", would it slow down the overall flash? Would it be better to have it at "Single Frame" which it won't do anything but stay in the first frame... even though the symbol has only one frame, with "Loop" I think it would be looping itself, which logically if you have too many of them will slow the flash down... ok I'm done sorry for the long message ..... ;-)

Why Would Anyone Ever Use Graphic Symbols?
This is just out of curiosity, but to me, Graphic Symbols in Flash have become obsolete. I just use Movie Clips instead. I mean, they have their own independant timeline, they support sound and actions etc...

Why would anyone ever need Graphic Symbols? can they do something that Movie Clips cannot do?

The only advantage I found was that graphic syombols could be previewed in the timeline at author-time, which is only useful for straight-linear animation.

Your view and comments are welcome.

Graphic Symbols
i've been struggling with Flash a lil'over a year now. Always more to learn; especially when i hit this place.

Of the Symbols; i'm most familiar with MoveClips. Recently i have been playing with Graphic Symbols. For my use of fitting reuseable, animated pieces in succession together to tie knots; they are easier to build because they show on parent timeline if you stretch line out tfar enough to show last frame; so can align to each other.

What are some of the other reasons to use Graphic Symbols, pit falls, differances etc.? One thing i'm directly wondering, is if i can set some kind of default where they initiate as "Play Once" from frame "1" when taken from library; as it would save me a lot of time/aggravation it seems. i did learn that with black background the colors are more dramatic, and i can preshadow everything, then shadows only are seen when they don't fall on the black background/ when they should with no fuss!

This is something i started, to take seperate animations out of eventually for a complete knot site. Knot Link The menu part is sloppy, but not focus presently. Working on that end of the skill set is what i plan on developping more here (meaning the menu screwed up and i just concentrated on the rest of the project to get done to this point/ see what i could do).

The first 5 are specific high performance hitches for a man to hang on rope by(with extreme training; don't try that at home please; i've already outlived enough climbing friends!). The last 4 you might be more familiar with; the last a magician's trick. i could use help on the graphic symbols understanding, depth, shadowing, lacings weaving in and out, design hints etc. Which set look better as design and strategy for production of more etc. i've written and drawn a lot about knots, ropes, pulleys, rigging leverage etc. online and in some classes. Eventually plan a knot/rope site of animations and base and advanced theory. i think Flash is the way to go.

Thanks a lot,
Am happy to answer any emails etc. with knot, rigging etc. questions;
But figure i'll ask y'all about the Flash!

Graphic Properties Within A Movie Clip

I have 10 more text headings which I want to perform the same actions so I am duplicating and renaming the movieclip (no problem) but when I try and duplicate and rename the text heading symbol and type a different text heading, it changes the the text in previous symbol too.

This muct be a common procedure, which I am obviously doing wrong.

Graphic Symbol Or Movie Clip?
I am using flash 8 to create an animation nav feature on my homepage consisting of four buttons and an alphabet ("abcdefg....") of text above them. I would like to animate the text so that when a button is mouseovered, some of the letters change color, and when the button is clicked, the other letters fade to 0 alpha and the color-changed ones move around the screen.

I have the mouseover feature working, but I can't seem to create a tween to 0 alpha for the fading letters...and for the moving letters i am not sure what to do...what is the best way to do this? should I make all letters graphic symbols and then refer to them with actionscript to make different ones fade or move for each button? or should they be movie clips? i'm an actionscript beginner so if actionscript is the answer could you please direct me toward a particular topic or category of actionscript to research? I think the main advantage to created a movie clip symbol as opposed to doing the animating in the main stage and timeline is that it can get very cluttered very easy. It makes working with movie clips next to impossible for me. I'm sure I'm not understanding something.

Missing/non-functioning Movie Clip Symbols
I made a simple movie clip symbol that's 50 frames long, plunked it into an animation that's just a static background 1 frame long, and made a Flash preview. It worked fine on my end, but when I emailed it, the recipient saw just the background.

Then I tried exporting it as a Quicktime movie and both I and my recipient got a 1-frame movie that included the symbol, but with no animation -- just one static frame.

I tried extending the length of the overal animation to 50 frames to match the movie clip symbol's length, but got the same result. I've made sure that the clip is set to "Export in First Frame." Still no luck. I've searched the web for everything I can think of to help solve this problem but can't seem to figure out where I've gone wrong. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Ever Wondered What Graphic Symbols Really Are?
Well, have you?

On a whim just now, I decided to experiment with ye olde Graphic symbol (you know, the ones with those start and looping properties and no instance name). It turns out that once your movie's compiled, all your Graphic symbols actually dissolve into their parent timeline. So if a Graphic is a child of a MovieClip, then the animation defined by the Graphic will be incorporated into the timeline of the MovieClip.

It's as if the Graphic never existed; it seems like it's a fake object with no Actionscript equivalent, used only to make animators' jobs easier. That explains why it can't have an instance name, or filters, or a blend mode, yet it can still be rotated, scaled, skewed, and have a color transformation. This also suggests that multiple instances of a single Graphic symbol are dissolved into separate sets of the same animation data; inefficient from a developer's standpoint, perhaps, but not a big deal to animators.
