this sounds really weird but i moved my action script box off the screen just under the toolbar, cause it was really annoying and getting in the way, now i cant find it again , ive resetted and tried other flash files, but it wont come back , ive tried unclicking the actions tab and clicking it but to no avail all that happens is a tick appears and dissapears next to the action tab,...

Student Lost Action Scripting Land...
Hiya Guys!

I'm VERY new to the world of Action Scripting, and am trying to create some stuff that is very much over my head. I was hoping that some one wise out there could help...I've uploaded the .fla file containing an example of the dilemma, if anyone wants to take a looksee.

Essentially what I am trying to do is create a MC that includes two animations and a hidden button.The effect I would then (ideally) like to create, would involve the first animation in the MC playing and interacting with frame actions designated fro it on the main timeline, then, behaving like a button, posses an onRelease event handler and performs a gotoAndPlay action to the second animation in the MC, plays it, and ends.

The first animation in the MC is a shape tween that enlarges the MC's size. I've incorporated onClipEvent actions for the MC in the main timeline so that the animation plays forward if the hitTest=true, and then plays backward if not.

I've tried to create the overall effect by incorporating a hidden button in the MC,and assigning an onRelease action to target frame 21, labeled "here" in the MC timeline, but it isn't working.As far as I can gather, the onClipEvent actions in the main timeline are clashing with the button actions inside the MC.

If any one could shed any light on how I can either disable the main timeline MC actions for the initial animation once the hidden button is clicked, or knows knows a better way to achieve this all together could you let me know?

Tweening(or The Lack Of It)
I'm trying to show a tree growing on a page I'm making for a personal project. I am using photographs in various formats (bitmap,png,jpeg,psd) and the movement I get when tweening is just a snap to the final image. No smoothness or movement of the tree at all throughout the movie. Is there something I have to do to prepare these source photos for Flash5 to tween properly? I've got a bazillion more questions but that'll do for a start.

Have you gotten to the stage where ideas are out of reach? Then you visit a site and get mad at yourself becasue everyones ideas are cool and unique and "better than your own"? Just wondering.

i did some animation with tweens in content.swf
when the content.swf is nested into my main.swf (with loadMovie) the animations seems to be slower.

framerate is the same with 30 fps

what´s the reason for that, how to fix the problem...?

Hours and hours of meditation, gallons of green tea, countless days spend in nature and countless nights sleeping underneath the stars, didnt solve my problem..... I lack creativity !!!

For once I tried a different approch of working. Instead of working on a site and see where it takes me I planned this site Im currently working on before hand. Results so far can be seen here:

Obviously I didnt plan it enough though. I thought how I wanted the menu to work and how the basic layout would look like. I never thougt about the transitions and... that's where I got stuck.

I have no idea about how I want the background pictures to make place for other ones or how to take the text of the screen and bring it back on there.

So I kinda hoped that one/some of the many creative people that come here could give me (a) suggestion(s) of what they think would work for this site.

I've seen one too many fade-ins and -outs and scrolls into screen (with a delay). Since the site is kinda soothing it will easily be over the top for the site, but otherwise the transitions will be too slow.

Do you peeps have any idea how I can take the background pictures and the text of the screen and also put it back on in a way it still suits the layout?

All suggestions are welcome.

Lack Of .onMouseWheel Support On Mac OS X
Being a Flash developer since Flash 5/MX, I'm highly annoyed by the lack of support for the .onMouseWheel event in the Flash player for Mac.

This is not a rant, I'm just looking for answers.

For those not familiar with the .onMouseWheel event handler, it allows you to scroll text fields and even movieclips with a mouse scroll wheel. However, this is only supported in Windows.

Mac OS X, surely enough, is more than capable of supporting this. OS X supports scroll wheel mice, and with the release of the Mighty Mouse, scrolling via mouse will [finally] be standard. I'm quite disappointed that I cannot test this feature on my platform, and I do find it a hindrance to the progression and feature-set of my project.

Lack Of Sound Sync...
I've already posted about this little dilemma of mine in the "MX04 Bugs/'Issues'" Topic, but I've decided that this problematic an issue deserves a topic of it's own.

During production with MX 2004 Pro, I've run into a little problem with sound syncing. I've become aware that I'm not the only one with this problem. It starts with one scene and it even carries over to other scenes, making fade in and outs completely pointless. I'm using a separate layer for Sound FX and Music, but the problems begin in a scene with no music at all. If anyone has a solution or bug fix for this (besides working with an extremely delayed timeline) let me know. Thanks.

Strings Variables And Lack Of Knowledge
Hi,
I've got a dynamic text box that should display the relevant text depending on the values of the two variables:
"section" and" thumb". The text related variables are dynamically loaded from a text file when the movie loads and follow a logical pattern of graphics1,graphics2,web1,web2 etc... or in other words they correspond to the result of combining the "section" variable with the "thumb" variable.
I have the following script to load the relevant variable into the texfield:

_root.section_clip.text_loader.txt_holder.htmlText = _level0._root.section+_root.thumb;

the problem is that instead of actually loading the relevant text, it displays the combination of _root.section and _root.thumb ie:
graphics1.

graphics1 would be the name of the variable I'm trying to call, but flash interprets it as text rather than the variable that it should to make me happy.

I am aware that I'm probably doing this completely the wrong way
but that is what happens when you try to figure out actionscripting with no external aid.

I have a map that shows the regions of new zealand. When a person clicks on Auckland for example. I want it to call an enlarged version then the user will confirm that Auckland is correct with a go button that I have made. Once this is done I need to make a dynamic text box say "auckland region"

Lack Of Www Causing Security Problems?
I've got a Flash app that calls a php script to query a MySQL database. It's working OK, but if I go to the address without the www, it doesn't work.

I've triggered the script directory from an html page with a form, and there's no problem dropping the www. And I know that Apache is set to display pages without www.

So I'm baffled as to the cause of the problem. I don't think it's a crossdomain.xml issue because it's the same domain. And I don't want to go through the entire project and change http://www.personal-log.com/LCARSLogsLoader.html to http://personal-log.com/LCARSLogsLoader.html

Any ideas?

Dynamic Buttons Lack Actions?

I am having two related problems with the attached file:
The main issue is this: I am using a movieClipLoader class to load a bunch of thumbnails, then upon their completion, enable them as "buttons." Within the onRelease action of those thumbnail buttons, however, I cannot seem to write a statement which will apply the action to the corresponding variable, depending on which button is pressed. I can trace the button's name, but I can't figure out how to make it do something for(var i = 1;i>=106;i++).

Help Me Please... MX 2004 Crash(lack Of Memory)

Please help me on my problem. I have a Pentium4 3 Ghz Processor with a 760 mb RAM but still MX crashes due to lack of memory. My dilemma started by:

I'm creating a Multimedia Presentation for my company in Flash 5, I'ts all about the company and the Government, I put a lot of pictures and text. The Presentation are divided into 2 parts, English and Arabic. Im done now with the English part, since the Arabic content is same as the content of English I just copy Scenes in English to Arabic. I try to duplicate it giving a different scene name. To give you an idea the fla file size is 33,785 KB. It is working normally in Flash 5, I publish it on EXE and SWF Files easily.

Now, once I imported it to Flash MX 2004, I can't compile it to EXE or SWF files because it will prompt an error, "Lack of Memory or Memory Unavailable" Given the fact that I do have a higher memory already and a good processor.

The only thing I need to migrate the project to MX from Flash 5 is that, Flash 5 does not support Arabic Text. That is the only thing.

Please help me, My deadline is really coming for this project? I really need your reply.

Help Required: Sniffing Lack Of Mouse Movement
Hi there I was wondering if anyone could help me.

I am developing an swf where if the mouse is not touched for a period of time say 15 seconds then the movie will gotoand stop at say frame 1.

I am aware that I will need some type of if statement, however I am not sure of correct the syntax to monitor the mouse movement (or lack of) should I say.

If anyone could provide me with the correct syntax to allow this to work that would be brilliant.

Can someone help me?

Somehow I need Flash to detect if/when the mouse does NOT move over a course of time, so that it can begin a countdown to replay an intro movieclip I need to play before a graphical menu loads.

That is to say, if no one moves the mouse in order to access any of the menu items (say within a minute of the menu_mc loading), the script runs and the intro_mc plays over again. Every time the mouse moves, the script should reset (so that it doesnt go back and replay while the viewer is moving the mouse).

In the attached example, I've labeled the parts, where the light green ball represents the intro and the static dark green ball represents the menu. It stays on the menu page with the following script (which I am obviously unaware of how to modify to meet the above criteria).

Ok... I have been making flash movies for quite some time and never tried to learn actionscript or any of that mumbo jumbo.

Heres the deal; I need to learn how to make a site in flash. Basically what I need to learn to do is how to make pages link together, Do you just make different scenes, or what is the best way of taking that on? Then do you just link it with get_url ... right I need some help guys .. I seem to have managed the seemingly complex spining menu items but I can't make the buttons work!

What should happen is ... move the mouse over a brick .. brick spins and the text appears .. if you dont click on anything .. the brick will spin back round. If you do click on it (well the bottom two bricks anyway) it will direct you to either MSN or Google. If you experiment with it, you'll find if you open both the bottom two bricks at once .. then click on any of the bricks (even the top ones).. its pot luck as to if you get google or msn.

I've tried setting the graphic as a button .. but i can't make it do anything at all.

Can someone maybe contact me and have a look at my flash coding and tell me where I'm going wrong?

-i'm trying to place some background music on my page. I've been reading the tutorial at http://www.kennybelew.com and am having much trouble. I can get the sound to play, and that's fine. I'm tryin to make a button that turns the music off if playing=true, and back on if playing=false.
I figured i'd start with the basics and just see if i can get the music to stop just on a button press, but i cant even get that to work!!!

Okay, I have a decent amount of HTML experience but love Flash sites. I'm looking to learn to do web design using Flash and am wondering if there are any VERY basic tutorials on starting a website. I've gone through all of the tutorials on the site and know that it would have to be a movie but I'm looking for a little more direction. Maybe someone knows of a good adjunct site that could help. My goal is to get into e-commerce web design with Flash. Also, could anyone tell me if it's possible to incorporate MS Access into Flash sites? Thanks for the help.

Just Want To Share Some Experience
I had some problem with AMFPHP, actually all of my works, when tested on the remote servers, seem not to work on everything exept IE. And finally my last site worked only on my computer.

While checking my server logs I've found that when users tried to enter my site, their browsers hitted the strange 'mysite/crossdomain.xml' file. I've asked my help panel about 'crossdomain' and in five seconds the mysite/crossdomain.xml had been created with the following inside:

Doing this helped me. I never met the same as mine problems here, but maybe it could help someone.

My First Experience With Writing OOP With AS3
So Ive been reading Object Oriented Programming for AS3, and it makes sense. I wanted to try a script, as I should really apply what I have been learning. My script doesnt work, but I wanted to post it on here and see if I could get some feedback. I'm implementing the Maccromedia Flash Detection Kit using Dreamweaver MX. It was working fine, but now when I go to Behaviors>the original "Macromedia Flash Dispatcher Behavior" is no longer there. Instead, there's a Behavior called "Macromedia Flash Detection Behavior." I reinstalled the the Behavior from the kit in Extension Manager again, but that didn't eliminate the problem. I'm using the 30 day trial v. so I can't uninstall & reinstall Dreamweaver...up a creek without a... Any suggestions??????? Thank you.

Anyone Have Experience With Precache
Does anyone have experiece with Precache(ing) files into the Cache folder. I know this may not be a Flash thing--- but in doing this Flash project I am working on-- I have encountered a great problem.

If you click on the Refridgerator - the first time the "signed movie clip" loads--it is PAINFULLY slow. Once this image is in cache- it works beautifully. The video clip that Flash is importing is only 354k--- so it shouldn't be so slow--but the first time it is. Only a few of the buttons are working right now- Ref, Crackers box, Microwave---try them. And if you last til they load, go through and click them a second time and see how it should really look.

Anyone have any suggestions how I could speed up loading of the indepedant movie clips the "first" time?

Anyone Here Have Experience With ExternalAPI ?
I'm reading that ExternalAPI is the preferred method of communicating back & forth with javascript functions on the container page. But both of Adobe's own examples DON'T WORK. In IE 6.0 it reports a JS error, while in FireFox it just doesn't do what it should.

Any help would be appreciated.

Do You Have Experience With Time?
Hello All.

I am trying to figure out how to remove data from an XML generated Array based on the current date.

Each XML section has a begining date and an end date. I want the node to be removed if the date is outside the begining and end of the listed dates.

My thought is to use the Splice Method, but I am not quite sure how I would go about that.

Any thoughts, suggestions or tutorials will be very helpful.

Restarting The Flash 5 Experience
Hey,

I took a break from FLASH 5, but now i wanna start it up again. But this time i'm gonna start to use ACTIONSCRIPT when doing almost everything. I used to tween using the motion tween option etc...but now i will try to use actionscript to move things around and enlarge etc...

Is this a good idea or not?...Is it best to use actionscript to do things like tween and enlarge or what?

Neway, my main question is 'Where can i find a maual of some sort to help me learn ACTIONSCRIPT?

Possibly dowmnloadable?

The tutorials here are good, but i wanted a whole wad to enable me to learn the things i want easily...

Leveling And Experience Points
I'm trying to make it the way so when the character gets a specific amount of exp, he levels up, and I'm also trying to make it the way that when the character kills an enemy, he recieves a specific amount of exp, but I just can't seem to figure out how to, so if theres somebody who knows, please tell me.

Anyone Here Have Experience Creating Forms?
I'd like to set up a form in Flash and have the data dumped to a CSV file to be imported into my contact manager. I'm very, very new to Flash and don't have the slightest idea how to make this work. Any thoughts?

i want to press a "button_btn" that tells the playhead go to "frame1" to "frame2"

This is an actions that will take place on *ALL* machines connected to this webservice instantly.

is this possible ? if so, im thankfull to hear about it

3D E-commerce Shopping Experience
My company has asked me to invesitigate the possibility of building an online shopping experience using a rich media platform. Not a problem I here you say? Well, the e-ccommerce backend will be updatable using jpeg images etc, and they would like a 3D feel to it (!) so that you really feel as though are in a shop....hmmm. I said gimme two weeks and I'll see what I can find.

So, after a few days scouring the net for anything vaguely similiar, I have found nothing that hits the spot. Plenty of 3D models to look at, such as rotating mobile phones, but this is not practical as each client will have to build the 3D model themselves! What they're looking for is minimal effort for the client, using the same content they already have in their existing e-commerce system (such as images and text), then transforming this into a rich media version of the shop!

The key here is the 'virtual shopping experience' element of it.

Any thoughts or ideas? Is it worth the hassle? I have played around with 3d classes and Swift 3D but has anyone ever tried this before? Can Director do it?

Basically im finishing the 3rd yr of my degree in graphic design and i am entering into the D+AD awards... my project is producing a website to demonstrate a day in my life..

what i have chosen to do is allow people to live my day... so they will experience the sorts of things that I have happen in my day and how it gets put togther but i also want them to see how aspects of the day affect eachother...

my site is going to make use of a range of objects for communication such as mobile phone, phone, computer (email+msn) etc ....also objects such as a cd player with a choice of tracks to play will be available...

my site will allow the user to know the time of day... my current mood (1-10) and my energy (1-10) displayed thru simple themometer style bars...

people will make decisions from what time i get up to wot i eat to what i do with my day...

everything the user decides me to do will affect the mood/energy + also time... so i need to understand how this is actionscripted...

also it will obviously all be based on time... so i need to be able to link this with the communications + decisions that cum up...

if the user sets my alarm early it will allow for more to happen in the day and if late then obviously certain things that ive missed out on by gettin up late wudnt happen...

if the user decides i should go shopping for 3 hrs... over lunch then it means they cnt be having someone cum into my room to ask to borrow something or ask me to go somewhere else...

this is reli hard 2 explain but my a.s knowledge is low and i dnt no where to start... obviously everything is affected by everything... if im reli tired and they agree to take me to the pub then ill get moody... where as if i was full of energy then id be reli happy...if theyve send me to the shops twice then ill be unhappy... if theyve not let me eat ill be reli tired n unhappy etc....

i reli need help! any1 who could try 2 help wud be reli reli appreciated
