I am going to have the applications and content directories located off the local FMS platform and on an NAS. Both the FMS Server platform and the NAS are on an AD domain, so a generic AD account is needed to run the FMS service so FMS can access the NAS shares as needed. The default â€œLocal System accountâ€ wonâ€™t work for the NAS access.

What are the minimum permission required by the account that runs the FMS service?

Do You Take CPU Usage Into Account?
Rules for web development include making your files as small as possible, to require less bandwidth and faster loadtimes, but what about CPU usage?

Flash 8 has a bunch of nice features like blur, shadows, glow etc, that have to be rendered at runtime. This takes up quite a bit of CPU usage. Do you guys take this into account when designing a website/animation?

I ask this because I'm working on my portfolio at the time, where a bunch of thumbnails light up with a glow on rollOver. The glow results in a peak of around 55% CPU usage. When I move my mouse pointer fast over the thumbnails, I easely get peaks that get to 100%. Without the glow, it's about 20% (CPU is about 10% when animations are idle). I'm working on an AMD XP2600+.

Do you guys check your websites on older, slower computers to make sure people with that kind of system are able to see everything as smooth as you do on your monster develoment machine?

Are there tricks to keep the CPU usage as low as possible?

How To Account For Different Resolutions
I have a flash movie that pretty much takes up the entire screen at (970 x 580) . . . This works pretty well in 1025x768 resolution, but I'm not sure how to tackle this when the user has 800x600. I have some javascript that will resize the movie to that proportion, but all the text on the movie becomes blurred. I know almost everyone says to use percentages in the width/height to solve these type issues, but no matter what I try the text blurs horribly. Any suggestions?

How Do I Serve From FMS To My Justin TV Account?
I created an app, put a flv in there, and created a main.asc to create a netconnection ,then a stream connection and then play the file to Justin servers so I can see it in my account, but nothing happens and there is no connection.

I hacked at this and dont know FMS or the script language

Flash On Limited OS X Account?
Im at school right now, and every time i open flash, i just see the main tool bar, and no blank flash file. Once i create a blank flash file, the tool bar disapears, so i go to windows > panel sets but once i click the Windows bar i get an "internal application error". Everything seems to be fine after that, but whenever i try to add a tween or change the babckground colour, etc. the panel at the bottom with those controls doesnt update! ahh! and whenever i try to open a saved file, (for some reason it asks me to open it twice), it opens a a window, but its all gray and you cant see or do anything with the document.

i am on Mac OS X on a limited account. there are no problems with flash on an admin account.

btw my computer is the only one in the room with this problem

Now I want to create an login kind of section on the corner of my website where people will type in there user name and password and then it comes up saying that they are logged in and there name stays at the top all at all times whilst surfing the website untill obvisouly they log out.

No I know that you need some sort of a database whcih holds all the user names and passwords (accouts) I hold all this information a php forum. So in therory i need flash to collect that database and find the user names and password so when someone types in i.e. USER NAME: freddy PASSWORD: bloggy | flash will find that account of the php forum board and then hopefully log in saying on the flash movie that they have just loged in etc.

If this is easier to do in a HTML based website (like dreamweaver) then please say so, but you can explain how to do it or direct me to a clear tutorial whcih shows me how.

Please also state if the above can be done?

HELP Needed For FLASH In User Account
I have XP Professional with an Administrative and two User accounts.

All what I and my wife want - is to be able to use our separate User accounts for ordinary simple tasks like, for example, going to a necessary WEB page.

Sometimes we are lucky to do it, but very often we can NOT, because there is FLASH,

Let me give an example. I am interested what a local (Athens, GA) HONDA dealer has to offer, and want to open its WEB site. - O.K. - I open GOOGLE and find the necessary link to Athens, GA HONDA.

I click on this link, but instead of HONDA site there appears a message â€œYou do not have the latest FLASH. Why not to install it now?â€ No problem, I have nothing against FLASH, but it can NOT be installed in a User account.

No problem. I go to our Administrative account and easily install the latest FLASH version #10. To be sure that everything will work fine I restart the computer.

Joyfully I return to my User account and â€œwoe is meâ€ FLASH still does NOT let me to reach HONDA and gives me instead the same invitation for upgrading as before.

Please help me either to â€œtameâ€ this FLASH so that it would not mix with my computer steps, or to let it be properly active in my User accounts.

Please, also, keep in mind that I am one of those millions of â€œdummiesâ€ who just know only how to click a mouse and what is a difference between a file and a folder.

FMS Developer Ed & Local System Account
Is it only possible to run the FMS service as the Local System account in Windows Server 2003? I tried to change the Log On params to a user with privileges to another server's share but the service won't start up afterward. And in the info box in the FMS Admin app there is a little tiny tooltip within the popup message that says something about "License info". I changed the user back to Local System account and the service started up right away. I'm trying to test an app's ability to access a different path that's set in the application.xml <VirtualDirectory><Streams> node.

So, is it a limitation of the FMS Developer edition or is it something on our end? I thought the only limitation was 10 conncections.

Do Preloaders Take External SWFs Into Account?
I am loading external SWF's into my main movie to act as different "pages" when each button is clicked.

The main movie has a preloader. Will this preloader taking into account the fact that the main movie is calling/loading other movies or will each of the movies being loaded require their own preloader?

Problems Connecting To GMAIL Account
Hi there,

I've just been following the (as of today) latest tutorial on http://www.gotoandlearn.com about "Binary Sockets" and this all works fine and dandy using "leebrimelow.com, 110" for the socket connection (full code below).

But when I try my own domain "storm-media.co.uk, 110" I get the following error message....

Error #2044: Unhandled IOErrorEvent:. text=Error #2031: Socket Error.
at Pop3_fla::MainTimeline/frame1()

....this maybe because the port number is incorrect (I'm checking with my ISP just in case).

But if I try using my own gmail account "gmail.com, 110" (or "googlemail.com, 110") nothing happens? It just sits there and doesn't do anything?

Any ideas?

[F8] Creating A User Account On My Site - Where To Get Started?
Hello there,

I am not a complete beginner in Flash, but i am very new to this area i am about to enter.

I want to create a user account section on my site, which will store their recent purchases etc (the shopping section i will create later on, but want to make this bit very compatible) and some information about themselves.

The first question is: Do designers create these custom databases for themselves? Or do they usually use other peoples software and alter it? If so, do you have any recommendations?

And my main question is, how can i get started on this? I'm not sure what coding to use or anything? From googling i think i might need to use php and mysql?? Does anyone remember how they got started on this? where shall i read up on tutorials?

I want to build it up from a very solid foundation so that it can expand and not create problems in the future. Also the ability to be able to read the data of the user and enter it into forms they will fill out is essential.

What Approach Should I Take For Implementing User Account Into My Site?

I am currently designing a site where the user will select their product (which they have to put in their size etc) then pay for it. I would like to somehow add the feature of creating an account, which remembers their size and previous orders, so they can quickly load in their size etc and just make small alterations.

I would like to know:

Is this possible without huge scripting awareness?

I know about mysql and would like to store the info in there somehow.

What direction would you suggest in achieving this for longrun stability/secuirity

Mysql + PHP + flash?

Does anyone have perhaps some examples/tutorials or help sites which could guide me in the right direction.

I would like this to be able to cater for 10,000 users...

Content Not Appearing On Restricted Windows Account
Hi all,

I have a flash file in which certain items are set to Export for AS.
"Export in first frame" is unchecked and those items are placed on the
stage some frames after frame 1 to allow for a small loader bar.

All's fine on a whole lot of machines (Mac, PC and all sorts of
browsers) except for a group of PC's which run on a restricted
useraccount and run only Internet Explorer. On those machines the items
set to "Export for ActionScript" but not in frame one are not shown.

Does anyone have any ideas?

QAD workaround I suppose could be to have it all load in frame 1 and if
needed built a separate preloader but I would prefer to keep it all in
one file...

Sending Forms In Flash To Email Account
Sorry if this is a dumb question, very new to building websites in flash. Is there any way to simply send a form to an email account? I have created my form using the text input component and have my submit button, but can't find a tutorial on how to send the data to my email, only php and database stuff

Flash MX Pro On Limited User Account Won't Load
As the subject says, I need to be able to run Flash MX Pro on an XP guest account, but it won't load.

It was installed in the admin acc and runs fine normally, but once i try to run it in the guest user account it does nothing.
Dreamweaver and Fireworks both run normally in the guest account (as do most progs); I'm guessing that Flash needs to be able to write/access some files on startup that it doesn't have permission for - maybe copy some files from the admin app data folder - I 'dunno'.

Please, a bit of advise, thanks.

Session Variables For User Account Info?

I have a quick question...
Would I use session variables to keep track of user info for them to edit account info? Users login to edit their specific info (ie. address, hardware used, contact info...), then, on submit, the data will populate a SQL database. Not quite sure what method is best and also most secure. Playhead For Movie - Need To Account Fo Rnested Clips - Actionscript 2
I’m trying to create a play-head (not a load bar) with Action Script that shows where my movie is at in its timeline…

A little something like this…

The difficulty is that on my main timeline I have 3 places where the main timeline stops to play a nested movie clip… once the nested clips finish it carries on down the main timeline again.

How can I create this play-head so it moves smoothly while still accounting for the nested clips ?… Can’t seem to wrap my head around it!

[F8] MovieClip._width Property NOW Takes Into Account The STROKE?
Ok, so in Flash 8 if I have a MovieClip that contains 50px wide square with a 1 px stroke. If I trace(MovieClip._width) it returns "51"....
But in the .fla stage the MovieClip reads as 50px wide in the info panel. Oh, and here is the great part... if I change the stroke's scale property to "none", and scale the MovieClip to 500%, it's _width property will return as if the stroke was 5px (so 255px) but it will draw a 1px line!!! Wooohooo! So the actionscript tells me that I have a movieclip that's 255px wide, but visually it will only be 251 px.... SWEEEET!!!
Why the hell did this change from ActionScript 1.0 and is there a way to make it work like it use to???

XP Limited Account Users Not Prompted To Upgrade Flash Player
I have developed a web page which requires flash player 8.

I have observed that XP limited account user's with older version of flash player are not prompted to update their version of flash. The annimation continues for them but only displays elements of the movie that work in their version of flash.

With an xp admin account the user IS prompted to upgrade flash player.

Is there anything I can do to support XP limited accounts short of rebuildiong my page for an older version of Flash player.

ps my client is non technical and as far as she is concerned the page doesnt work on her pc so it is not acceptable.

I have a small problem that probably can be fixed easy. I have this form with many check boxes and when some are checked a text will appear in a movieclip. The code is like this:
