Update Flash Projector Content From A Web Site With A Button?
Hi there-

I'm using Flash CS3 (but not too familiar with AS3) to create a projector file for a USB memory stick to be distributed at a conference to all attendees. I'm looking for a way to update some of the content on the memory stick with the click of a button.

For example, a user plugs in the stick, clicks "update" and the projector file communicates with an online source (my server) to load an XML database, a text file, a directory of images, etc. dynamically rather than off of the stick.

It would be fantastic if clicking the button simply downloaded a file or directory and replaced a file on the memory stick. Is that possible? Anyone have any ideas?

How To Update Text Content Easily In Flash Website?

I have a question on flash website.

I found a website called beatport.com and I like the way they make the whole site in flash. This site is full of latest information. I wonder how do they update their text info? and how they pull the text info from blog or text file in flash. Are those involved database programming? Or other programming languages?

Method For Client To Update (formatted) Text In Flash Site
one of the worries that potential clients have about flash sites is that they might not be able to update information themselves. now, i'm not talking about complex database stuff ... but rather simple text-info like "news", "biography", etc. that needs to be updated every once in a while by someone who might only have a very basic understanding of computers.

furthermore, it would be important to be able to add some simple formatting to the text based on the *site-design guidelines* - 1 or 2 color options, bold/italic/underline options, tab-indenting, maybe even url-linking. depending on the design of the site it could look something like these:

what would make sense is a flash-based webinterface with a wysiwyg-text-editor that would e.g. show the current news (file), allow the user to add to it (including formatting according to preset rules) and/or delete older items, and send the updated info back to the sever from where it would be called by the site at runtime.

i think that this would be useful info for a lot of the users here on flashkit, so perhaps some of the more knowledgable members would be willing to chip in ?

All content will need to be clicked to activate, so roll overs etc... will only play after being activated.

So Flash sites which have multiple pages, frames, whatever, will need to have multiple clicks.

I am wondering what may be a large wonder. If I create a website with flash etc for somebody else, how can they update their own site? For example, if they have an 'updates' page, I don't want to have to keep on redoing it for them in Flash. I heard words like 'strings' and 'XML' kicking about, but don't really understand it. I'm creating a store map for a company that
is updating at least once a month their list of
current stores. And they want to be able to update
the map on their own, but I have no idea on how
to make it easy for them (not knowing flash) to do
the following:

1.Add another store name.
2.Add the corresponding address and picture.
3.Add the corresponding store map.

So my question is:
Is there any program that lets user update their data
and pictures without messing with flash?

Active Content Update Ruins My Flash Intro
Forum,

I installed the Active Content Update to get rid of the "Click here to Activate this Content" message during mouseovers on my Flash Intro.

However, now that the message is gone, I have two problems that are somehow being controlled by the AC_RunActiveContent.js or something.

1. The flash is supposed to be centered on the screen, but instead it's in the upper left. Even the html calls for it to be middle.

2. The "Skip Intro" and "Sound" controls are gone

Can anybody help me understand what happened and what I need to do to fix it?

Easy Update For XML On Flash Site
Ok, here's the problem.

Say I have a client. I've developed a flash calendar for them that is driven by xml.

Is there a way to have an admin section on the site that will allow them to edit that xml file?

This would be like a flash driven CMS. I'm not sure if there are examples out there because it's something that's hard to come by. I know Group 94 (sp?) has one.

Any ideas?

Here is the idea behind the NAVIGATION. each new artist is represented by a "STAR". This STAR is placed randomly on the Flash MX movie. When one clicks on a STAR, the latter must load extra info from an uploaded file (such as an image and some text). FLASH must change the status of the STAR to "visited" as well, so that the user knows what he has looked at already.

On top of that, i don't want to be adding the stars to the FLASH movie everytime they add an artist! so i want to know if it is possible for Flash to automatically add a STAR at a random position (non overlapping another) along with the info it must load. HOW THE HELL IS IT POSSIBLE.

IF ANYONE HAS ANY IDEAS, help!

Updated Flash Site, But The Browser Wont Update The Changes
Hey, all. Simple question here. I've updated my flash site (tbsnyder.com), but neither of my browsers will actually take hold of the update, perhaps because I've just recently visited the site with those computers. I've tried clearing the cache on my Mac (Safari browser), but that didn't work. I'm using Firefox on the PC.

Anyone know the answer?

Developing A Flash Site That The Client Can Update Personally
hi, i've got a problem and i would like people to offer what they think the best solution will be.

as part of a university assignment, i need to develop an online CV for a dance student. my client wishes to be able to update the content on the site herself (she has absolutely no html/flash/computer knowledge). its only the text content that she wishes to be able to change.

searches so far suggest that i can develop the site using dynamic text fields, which upload whatever information is in the external text file, but the problem i have is how will i set it up so that she can edit it and save the changes.

am i able to develop a form on the site that allows her to edit/add text as she pleases? (how will the new information be saved to the text file?)

am i able to do it using flash only, or will i need to use mySQL and PHP (which is an available option)?
(these are some of the solutions i've come across searching for answers)

if she needs to login to servers, upload files, etc.. i don't think she would be able to do it. I could give her a template file that includes the needed variables to do the upload, etc. but if this is the case, it would be easier for her to give me the new content and i update it myself as i think she would get lost in it all.

please help. any and all advice and direction greatly appreciated.

I consistently term myself as a newbie to flash, although i am picking up the designing aspect pretty quickly - its the scripting that breaks my back - but im getting there.

I have a goal in mind and I would appreciate your thoughts on the topics which follow afterwards.

I am about to design a site for someone which has the possibility of being done entirely in flash or i might just do some flash here and there and do the rest mainly html. My main concern is that its all good and well as long as i do the updating of the site, regardless of what kind of site it is, but it s likely there will be a lot of content in the site and it may end up that this conent needs to be updated frequently. It may get to a point where the client wants to update the site themselves, with say for example - names on a list which grows daily - or news-clippings, or progress reports.

I need to learn quickly WHAT IT IS I NEED TO LEARN- if that makes any sense.

my first thought was that i could have a passworded section on their site where they can go and change the content of dynamic text boxes which would automatically update text in other areas of the site - in which case i need to know where to start on this, does the content of the text-box become a variable? _ SORRY FOR MY POOR KNOWLEDGE OF CORRECT TERMINIOLOGY

my second though was eeek....flash integrates with so many things, where do i start with databases and excel. How do they integrate. Where do i start. Does the client change stuff on a spreadsheet in their own office and the remote site somehow gets this info - HOW.

Where do i begin? Im WILLING to learn but im lost in an ocean of possibilities.

What is the best way to offer this service to a client - perhaps at the simplest level. Can anyone offer examples of what types of information they have allowed clients to update on their own, and HOW - to get me started on my learning/understanding journey.

In the news section of the website I have created three button on the top of the screen. When you click these buttons it will load the content of the topic. Basically I'm thinking of using an external text file to update the news and rants content on the site. How would I create content that loads when a user clicks on the the buttons. To do this would I have to create extras SWF'S and load up the content with external text files or is there an easier way to do this in Flash MX. Any hints, tips, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Searching Content In A Flash Site
Alright guys, my client wants a corporate looking site for his IT companty in flash, but he want the content to be searchable by both search engines and by the "search site." Now I'm not talking about searching for just the meta tags or anything, I mean if someone wants to search for "server accounts" and his site comes up in the search, the link'll take you to that part of the site and not to the main page where the movie is first loaded. So I guess a simple question would be can you search the content of a/multiple flash movies?

Flash Site Won't Display New Content...
I just finished my first Flash MX site, and I use external text files to hold all the data that's designed to be updated now and again (like news articles, etc.) - the trouble is, Flash won't recognise the new content, and even force-refreshing the browser to reload the movie won't change this. Is there a specific piece of code I need to put in the button which loads the text file in order to get it to check whether the document holds new content? Or even forces it to reload the document each time?

I read the forums and i understand how to dynamic create more menus without any problem with a CMS using xml, i also know how update a specific part of the site. i mean i can create dynamic text fields and update them with no problem also using xml. Well i can update fields that allready exists on the flahs it self. but in case that my client decide to add a new menu.. it has to redirect to a specific frame where the content of that specific theme is but if it don't exist.. what can i do?

SEO Seing The Content In My Flash Site

I was wondering if there is any way to use AS3 to make the text content in my flash website be seen by SEOs... can I somehow make the text in my flash document html based... maybe by using .xml or so? another soluton is to link the content to an html page.. the problem being that my websites menu is purely done with flash, including an intro animation, so if you'd hit the back button it would have to root right to the menu page and not show the animation again.... plus i coudlnt have the text content open up through an animation, like lines sliding appart to crate the text window, etc..

please let me know what tips you guys have, it would really help!

Flash Content Not Visible On Site
I have a small flash movie like an ad on a static web page. The problem is that the flash movie appears fine locally... but once the web page and the flash movie are uploaded to my linux server, the flash content is no longer visible on that site. I earlier had the same webpage on a windows server and it worked fine on it. All i have done is just transfered it onto my linux server.

Flash To Protect Site Content?
Can I use Flash to protect site content? Here's what I mean...

I'm going to be created a database of English words. For each word, there will be an audio recording of the word spoken, 3 example sentance (past, present, and future tenst), a definition in English and Japanese, the Japanese equivalent word, etc, etc...

Anyway, I want to protect that, as I'll be creating an online subscrption service to Japanese people looking to learn a bit of English (don't worry, it will be extremely low price, like $2 a month or something, not sure of the exact cost).

I'm assuming Flash can play audio files that are not embedded into the swf, correct? If so, if someone got ahold of that swf, the audio wouldn't play for them, correct?

Also, if I make the text non-selectable, and pulled from an external file (probably xml), then they cannot copy the text right? And again, if they managed to get ahold of the swf, the text would not be available, correct?

I realize that they could simply type the text into their favorite text editor, but I'm banking on people being lazy...

Squeezing The Flash Site To 2X2 Inch With All Content Showing

the cool thing about this site is thta if you drag and make your browser window big, the site also scales and if you really make the size of teh window small so that you can see a window of size 2X2 inches... you can still see the content of the site!!

How can we do this, so that shrining the size of browser also shrinks the site so that all the content is visible at all times!!! is this something to do with flash, actionscript, html, javascript or what?

Can someone please tell or give resources where it explains how this can be achieved? I would love to do it for my site!!

Site Architecture - FLASH Menus Driving HTML Content?
I'm not quite sure if this is the best FORUM for this question...but...here it is -

My question revolves around the conventions used when employing FLASH menus that are designed to navigate through HTML content.

The architecture I’m most familiar with is the use of HTML FRAMES to implement this type of structure. One frame receiving the .swf menu, the other/s receiving HTML content dictated by the FLASH menu.

I’m wondering if there are any other approaches to this type of layout that differ form the technique described above. If so, what would they be and how are they implemented.

The other aspect to this question is how the set up a FRAMES document to be search engine compatible; i.e. to ensure that the FRAMES document that carries the content pages (the holder for lack of a better description) is the page that becomes the URL registered rather then the documents that contain the content. This seems to be a problem with this type of architecture. I’m wondering if anyone has a clue how to work around this situation.

Im making a Flash website for a friends business, and he knows nothing about flash. Is there a way to link a dynamic textbox to a .txt file that he can update, that will input the .txt file text straight into a text box in flash?

im not that great with actionscript yet. I can look at it and understand it but I dont know how to write my own yet.

so I want to be able to update a horizonal menu from outside of flash.

so I put the code in an script.as and incldue it on the first frame.

I attach a movie clip out of the library over adn over again.

1. product name should be able to update by clients in and HTML admin page through ASP...

2. product picture list, for instance, I have 3 products right now in my navigation, and client should be able to upload a product picture and this picture will be visible as the 4th product in the navigation..

Update Mc With XML Content

Ok ..here is the problem..
I got an mc containing a componet that reads data from an xml file.

After i updated the xml file i don't see the data changing in the mc .( the swf is in a html page online)

The xml file is readed in the init of the component.

To see the new data , I have to reload the page ( erasing the cache files of explorer!!!!)

Is there a way to update it on the fly?

I tried to make it as an external mc an load it in the root then unload it and reload it but didn't work.

It works fine offline, from the projector so the prob is on line.

what can i do????

Dynamic Text Field Won't Show Update Until NEXT Update Happens
Hi,

In a very simple Flash file with bascially just a dynamic text field and a button I attached some very simple code to the button that updates the text fields .text parameter, like this:

on(click) {
some_textfield.text = some_value;
}

With trace(...) I have verified that "some_value" is what I want it to be. However, the txt field doe NOT get updated! It gets that (b ythen old) value the NEXT time I press the button!

So when I start the flash movie and click the button nothing happens, the next time I see the value I should have seen the first time, etc. - always one event late. Since the trace() I put inside the on(click) handler shows the correct value I'm really at a loss to explain why the text field is not updated.

Any explanations?

PS: By the way, I'm using font "_sans" so there's no font to embed, but trying Arial with "embed numbers" (I want to display an integer number) doesn't work either. I only mention that because I think to have observed something like the above strange behavior caused by embedding (or not) the characters.

I was viewing a couple of flash sites and it almost looks like they have a admin control panel where you could update the information and pictures on them without having to actually open the .FLA file. and if this is possible is it also possible to make new links??

Using Forms To Update Content
could someone please point me in the right direction. I want to create a form page with boxes that are used to update content on another page. Basically what is typed into the form boxes should then inturn update another dynamic text field on another page. Whats the best way to go about this? Create a data base? or is it possible for flash to just directly update the content and save it? Also is it possible to insert some html tags in there?

I have downloaded and installed the active content update to publish my flash.
However I can't get the swf to be center aligned to the browser. I can get it left and right, but not center.

You would have thought that perhaps the
'align', 'middle',
should infact be
'align', 'center',
but this doesn't work. However if you change it to right it right aligns the movie.. how do you centeralise it?

CMS For The Poor ... How Can I Update Content?

Complete Flash novice here - sorry 'bout that.

Okay - can anyone give me some pointers. I wish to create a simple website for a client. An art gallery site. The budget is stunningly minimal and so I can't put a lot of oomph in to it and make a dollar.

The client wants the ability to update content. Definitely text and possibly images ( but not neccessarily so). Can Flash allow my client to do this - say from a Word Document or Notepad or whatever.

If so - can you tell me how or point me to some good links? How does he get the Word Doc to update a website - and especially as he will be a complete knobhead when it comes to web - so Cute FTP, WS FTP etc are probably a non starter.

So - tell me folks - is there a cheap as chips way of doing this with some clever code that means I don't need databases and ASP etc?

The first person to respond with a coherent answer that I can understand without running for the dictionary, will recieve my forever grateful award.

Flashsite Content To Update In Editor?

Not used to the flashterminology as I work with Flash more than I speak about it...
Need to find out whether it is possible to create a flashsite with content that any "nonflasher" can update with a normal editor. I usually build and maintain the sites myself, but now have a client who wishes to update various parts of the content herself.

my current project is designing a template for ebay listings and ebay doesn't let you reference external files for auctions.

is there anyway to accomplish this with just inline javascript?
