Looking for (constructive) opinions:::

I'm thinking about purchasing the MX bundle and wonder if Freehand will satisfy all the needs illustrator addresses. The conundrum is that I've also thought it might be a good idea to get Illustrator.

I'm very comfortable in PShop, and also Flash.

Looking for pros and cons of each.

I have posted on the graphics board though seen very little response. Just seeking advise. Not spamming.

I Need Opinions
Hi all,

Happy New Year!

I'm relatively new to Flash 5, and mainly use it to create projector files for photo slide shows. I'm still in the experiment stages.

I would your opinions on some things.

1.) I'm looking for some "good" books to help me get up to speed quicker. I understand most of the Flash concepts, but I want to be able to use Flash as a multimedia authoring tool (unless you suggest I'm better off with another program). Which brings me to my second question...

2.) I found a program, SWF Studio, which really looks hot. Has anyone had any experience with this wonder? Would you recommend it? Is there something better?

3.) Is anyone using Swish? I have a license for version 1.0,
but I never really used it. You see, I had been using Opus Pro, MMB, and NeoBook to do most of my multimedia creation.
Flash ended up on the back burner for almost a year, until someone in a usergroup mentioned it could do everything I was doing with other programs. I'm not convinced of that, yet.

I would love to exchange email with anyone using Flash for creating things other than web sites. I would also like to exchange email with those creating web sites, as I might like to web enable some of my creations ;o)

There both very basic.. Limited AS knowledge..

As for the SPOKE one. I can't figure any other way to dothem buttons. I want to be able to make them close then reopen the next one when a button is pressed and a window is currently open..

IE.. ABOUT window is open. and you click on BIO. ABOUT auto shuts and then BIO opens. I can't figure that out for the life of me. If you happen to have a idea give me a holler.

I have been asked to do a porn site and I want to do it but im basically a Flash designer. I could do it in html like all the all the other sites online but I am soooooo board of html.

Does anyone think that a flash porn site is a bad idea compaired to html? If so why.

Need Preloader Opinions...
Hi, I have a page with two flash movies on it I'm using as menu's. Each one is only like 14K big. but when i go to the site on a 56K it can take over min. to open one of the movies(the same one always takes long to load, but is only 1.5k bigger than the other)...as of now there is nothing else on the page but those 2 movies. I read a tut. that said you shouldnt make a preloader unless the movies are over 20k big..... what do you guys think, should i make make one?
oh, and maybe if anyone out there is usin anything slower then a cable modem could you chek out the site and tell me if it takes too long time to load...its the menu on the top that always takes too long

Database Or Xml - Opinions
I need to dynamically load data everytime a user logs on to my site. I can either

a) query the database and load the data straight into flash

b)query the database to generate an xml file and load that into flash

which has better performance? What would you do?

Vista Opinions
I don't intend to start a war of words between the platform police here but I'd like to hear some feedback on how Vista fares. I bought a copy of XP Pro a few months back and have received a copy of Vista as they had promised to anyone purchasing XP during that time. Vista still sits in its box as I'm apprehensive to take the plunge until I hear how it's working out for people.

For those of you out there who are running Flash, Photoshop, etc. on Vista, can you tell me what problems, if any, you've experienced and whether you feel it's worth "upgrading"? I'm happy with XP but curious about new things as well.

[AS3] Opinions On Hit Area
I am looking for opinions on what is the best way to handle the hit area of navigation items.

Example:

You have a sprite that contains a text field that has a width=100 and height=10. Obviously 10 is small especially if you make a horizontal navigation and have 20 items. Would it be best to dynamically create a shape behind the text field and use that to change the height which will increase the vertical area that can be rolled over, or would it be better to use hitTestObject()?

Opinions, Sounds, And The 56k User....
ok so things are finally falling into place even though at first I was having "loadMovie" trouble - as I'm sure you're all aware - I did bug y'all enough times about that one - eventually I gave up on that, and decided to just push forward and see where I got - the answer, quite far:

your comments/opinions would be much appreciated - this is my first all-out flash project. criticism is also acceptable.

btw = ty Flash Kit for providing all the cool sound fx and loops - some of you might notice the sound track

as far as sound goes, I have a couple of questions:

1. if you watch the animation, the submenu on the left side (elements come together from left to right, with a banging sound) isn't always necessarily in synch with the movement of the elements - any suggestions?

2. also to do with the submenu on the left side - after it settles into place, I want the user to be able to click on the circles, hence I've turned these to button instances. since these aren't "real buttons" I need to add sound to make the user aware that these ARE buttons - and I did so by using the attachSound action to load my beep.wav, and then using the onMouseEvent action to try to get the sound to play - no good - any idea what I'm doing wrong??

3. what's the quick and easy way to provide a user with a sound toggle on/off button? no fancy volume controls for now thank you - just on and off lol

finally, this is for anyone who has a 56k connection, or anyone who knows the answer to this:

does the preloader work? I can't tell because I'm on DSL, and because the entire site is made with the loadMovie action - this makes the bandwidth profiler on Flash useless - if it does work - WOOHOO! GREAT! if not, how can I add a preloader for each loaded movie? or better yet, can I load all the elements first and show 1 preloader, and then play everything once it's loaded - I HAVE seen this before so I know it's possible.

I have a few questions about designing a whole site. It's really hard to find full flash movies/sites to determine how to build a full flash site. I'm new. Anyway, right now I'm just putting a keyframe on about every 5 frames (1,5,10,15,..) with frame labels news, portfolio, about,..... . My main nav buttons have this code built in.

on that keyframe on my actionscript layer I have loadMovie comands to load external.swfs for different sections of the site.

Is this a good way to design, or do any of you have suggestions.

Navigation System - Help & Opinions Please
Hi All

I wonder if you could help me with the design of a navigation system.

I want to build a Flash navigation system that will go in an HTML page. The Menu will go on the left hand side (in the old days in a frame, but now I'm reformed ).

DESIGN
Each menu item will have a colored bullet next to it, and the bullet will change to show you current location, and will probably have an animation; one of the main reasons that I want to do it with Flash. (You can see a partial draft HTML implementation at http://www.anderson-mark.com/myi/english/home.html - only "home" and "an example" are valid links).

I absolutely don't want to use JavaScript or Frames, so in HTML I would have to duplicate the menu in EVERY page, just because I want to change the color of the bullet (if I didn't want to change it, I could just insert the menu text using SSI). This would also mean that if I add a section, I need to change EVERY HTML page.

IMPLEMENTATION
I THINK I know ho to implement it, but I wanted to check my idea and to find out about passing the variables (the ActionScript ref for getURL is useless).

The menu "bar" will be an swf file, that will be included in the left column of every page (as you can see in the above URL). What I plan to do is as follows:

When a user clicks on a menu item, I will load the new page (with the menu swf included) and pass a variable from the calling page (e.g. "location=philosophy"

When the new page loads, I will check the value of "location" and if is "philosophy", set the bullet next to philoshophy to be different color (and reset the other buttons to be the original color), so the user can see where they are.
(I may also use another color to show visited sections during the session.)

QUESTIONS
So is this a good way to build it?

I'm assuming that the menu swf will be cached, so it will be quick to change pages. Is this so?

Opinions On Flash Remoting With .NET?
Does anyone have any opinions on Flash Remoting with .NET Web Services?

I'm interested in hearing anything. I couldn't find much here at Flash Kit.

My experience with it so far is that Flash Remoting is terribly slow when it has to handling large records or many of them, but it is most likely that I just don't understand how to set it up or use it properly.

Any thoughts on the subject of using Flash Remoting with .NET or on the speed issue would be greatly appreciated.

Looking For Opinions Setting Up A Gallery.
I'm wanting to get opinions about what most prefer when setting up a gallery.

Either embeding files of print images within an .swf, or, using getURL
to open the image within it's own window.

I've noticed that the compression (though adjustable)used in FLASH can play havok on some finer details. Though, if I leave the file size
larger, say around 55K, I'm wondering if I should include a preloader for each image?

Any thoughts?

Best Way To Learn Flash - Need Opinions Please..
Hi, I have been learning Flash on my own for a few months now with reasonable success, but I find the material in books only covers the basic principles of each section. I've tried looking for a college that offers courses but have not found any yet, except for a specialty school that charges $900 for a 2 day speed class. I would appreciate any comments on how any of you got started and what ways have worked for you in learning Flash. I really enjoy working with it, but at times it gets somewhat frustrating trying to figure out the smallest problems. Thanks for any feedback.

Hello everyone ~

I was hoping some folks might be able to give me their opinions on what they feel are the best resources for learning Flash MX 2004, like what books you've used and loved, or any websites that have a lot of tutorials for the newest incarnation of Flash. I love Flashkit, and find it to be a great resource, but I'm curious about other sources. Has anyone done the Macromedia University Online courses, and are they worth the subscription price tag?
