Converting A PDF To A Flash FLA File Without Converting To An Image First?
Basically, I'm building a digital catalogue that runs off a CD and uses a Flash 'page turning component' to display the pages. Certain pages will have links that use Flash's Fscommand call to open Word and Excel documents.

Has anyone got any bright ideas of how to Convert a PDF to a Flash FLA file without converting to an image first?

I know I can open a PDF in Photoshop, save as a PNG or JPG and then import this into Flash, however the quality isn't brilliant. If you use a hi-res image, then you get a hi-res file size...

Currently, the best way I have found, is to open the PDF in Illustrator, then export it as a SWF. Illustrator converts all text to shapes and you end up with a small SWF, yet great quality when displayed in larger sizes. As I'm currently using a page turning flash component that loads SWF files, I need the quality to be good for the 'Zoom' function.

I've found an Illustrator script that will do the hard work via a 'batch' process, so I can take a 100 page PDF and convert the whole lot to 100 SWF files while I drink tea and 'look busy' and read a magazine, but the problem I have is that I need to add a layer of buttons to several of the SWF files to add a little functionality....

I do have a SWF to FLA decompiler which does a good job, however because Illustrator turns everything into shapes, the decompiler does the same and you end up with thousands of files in the library.... Plus there are a lot of error messages when the file is first loaded...

Many layers are masked, (for some reason without a fill), so if you publish the decompiled file straight away, you just get a blank file. Once you go through and fill the masks needed, it shows when you publish, but this really is a lot of work and I've had a few pages that show when you open the SWF file, but don't show when the SWF is called into the page turning file.... Hmmm....

So in short, I'd like to take a PDF and convert it to a FLA file, add a layer of buttons and publish as a SWF file....

Converting .SWF To Video Format
I need help converting .SWF files to video format like AVI. I tried exporting it in Flash its self but the quality is poor. Does anyone know of any high quality encoders out there that they know would do the job? I am planning on converting my flash files so I can submit them to websites like YouTube.

Converting From Any Video Format To FLV On The Fly?
Does anyone know if it is possible to have a flash site stream a movie from a URL provided by the user and show the video in flash regardless of what format it is in originally? For instance www.someblablasite.com/myfunnyvideo.mov or .avi or .wmv or .ra or whatever they are called these days...

Is it at all possible? Im not expecting a working solution, i just need to know if it is possible. Youtube seem to manage it, and i saw a post asking something like this further down, but no one had answered. Even if the solution incorporates some other programming language, I still wanna know (i just... learn it)... =)

Converting M2P Format Video To Flv
Hi All,

Recently my client supplied me videos in M2P format to be used in Flash project. I guess this format is MPEG2 which is used by HDTV or Broadcaster.

I was trying to convert it to flv format but My Flash 8 could not accept it for conversion. Ultimately I requested for MPEG1 format and it worked very well.

Is it that M2P format can not be converted to flv or am I missing something?

Problem Converting An .fla To .gif Format
I have created an animation in Flash and I have problems saving it as .gif. I know that if you go to File > Publish Settings you can put a check mark in the .gif check box and then in the .gif tab select animated.

However, after I do all that it creates a static .gif image that doesn't move. WHY??? Can anyone help me??? This is very urgent!

Converting A Powerpoint To Another Format
Hi, I know there have been other threads on this, but I have a couple questions that I didn't see on the other threads.

I know there are programs that convert a powerpoint to either Flash or video, but the one I downloaded didn't work properly. And on top of that, it had a huge ugly watermark right in the middle of the screen.

Does anyone have any advice on how I can convert a powerpoint to either video or flv, but without buying an expensive program that neither my client or I can afford?

Converting it to flash manually seems like it'll be complicated and time consuming, so I don't think I can do it (he wants this done soon).

Or is there anyone out there I can pay to manually convert this to video or flv? (I don't have much to pay, but I just want to get this done.)

Converting Variable Into Time -format

I have a variable counting milliseconds from on an event (but has nothing to do with timer or date). Now I want the variable to be displayed in a textfield (works, no problem), but I´m not able to convert my var into hh:mm:ss.

Any ideas how to convert from (for example) 123.000 to 00:02:03

Converting SelectedDate To YYYYMMDD-format
Im trying to use the DateChooser. You can get the date by using "selectedDate"-function, but the format is so screwed up that I cant use it. Looks like this:

Wed Jan 12 00:00:00 GMT+0100 2005

Is there a quick way to turn this string into a string with "YYYYMMDD"-format (ie. "20050123")?

Converting Mpg Movies To Quicktime Format
I have been tryin to convert mpg movies to quicktime format i.e.(.mov)
I am using FlashMx 2004 version.

What actually happens is that when I try to export movie i.e. (mpg, embedded in flash), or when I try to publish the same, it shows me that the Quicktime installed does not have handler for this type of flash movie.

I have been tryin to get this done for a long time pls help.

[F8] Problem Converting SWF Into Video Format
I have a swf with a video in it that I created. I want to export the swf as an avi from Flash 8 and when I do, the video used in the movie doesn't show. I have tried at least 10 different settings and nothing has worked.

I think the best way to go it for me to convert the swf into a video file (avi, mpg, or avi) and I assume it wouldn't alter the video being used in the swf.

Converting String Time Format

I have an XML file that have a set of times that are in minute:second format. (example: time="0:15")

I was wondering if anyone can give me some pointers as to how to convert that string into a number (milliseconds) so that I can compare it to position method of sound object. (example: mySound.position)

Help Converting The .as Code Into Binary Format
Is there a tool, to convert the as method which we have, to binary form.
I need it coz, i want to inject this method into all the SWF files i parse.

The objective, that iam supposed to do is

1.convert a .as function which checks for URL whether it is absolute or relative, then compile it into binary format and then inject it into the swf files which i parse and then redirect the calls to the predefined method to open the page related to the url.

2.Check the entire flash file for the different possibilities of opening a url and i need to proxy that call to the method which i have injected.

3. The method i have injected changes the url to the one which i want, then redirect the call to openUrl method or something similar to that, to open the webpage or clip related to the link.

I have no idea about flash and actionscript. Iam finding it very difficult to understand these stuff. Iam working in java.

So , Please provide me some inputs on how to achieve this.

Does any one know if there are ways to convert an .exe flash file back to ediable .fla file?

Reducing/converting Swf Files In Smaller Format (width, Height And Kb's) Possible?
Does anybody know if it is possible to convert swf files (with lots of bitmaps) to smaller files in sense of filesize in kb and format (while keeping the actionscript), like converting an 400X300 swf to 200X150.

for instance like one could resize an 720X640 avi or jpeg to an avi/jpeg half that size and very much smaller in kb's.

This question could bring up a lot of things which I know of and dont mean to do, like:

setting the jpeg publish quality lower
reducing individual jpeg quality
resizing it in the browser window or resizing it in an movieclip

The point is that I have some swf files which are made for an cd-production and are large in terms of filesize in kb and format (width, height) and I want to convert them for the internet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

EPS 8.0 File Format In Flash
Does flash not deal well with EPS 8.0 (vector) formated files??? When I import or copy into flash, 1/4 of my graphics and fonts (all outlines) show up misshapen or missing altogether!!!!!!!

Email Format For Flash File?
Hello all,

I'm new to flash and have learned a great deal on this site. My question is what's the best format to save flash files in to send via email. I've put together a information piece I want to be able to email people so I need a format most people will be able to view.

Do most people have the Flash stand alone player? If people have the ability to view Flash web sites, does that mean they have the stand alone player as well?

Any suggestions would be appreciated...

Someone "an00bis" kindly posted a bit of code which worked perfectly - except for the last line:

links_xml.load("http://www.jimpix.co.uk/links/linkxml.asp?id=31");

When I run this test on Flash, it tells me that there is an "Error opening URL".

If I do this instead:

links_xml.load("http://www.jimpix.co.uk/links/linkxml.xml");

It works, even though the content of both files is identical.

So I just wanted to check: can Flash only pull in content from "real" xml files, rather than from other files which format data to "look" like XML?

Unexpected File Format In Flash
I am trying to follow a tutorial which was included in an English magazine. There were files included on the CD, but when I try to open some of the .fla files I am given an 'Unexpected file format' error message. I can open the .swf files with no problems, but of course this doesn't help me with the layers, libraries, scripts etc.
The strange thing is that some of the .fla files on the CD can be opened, and some have the error message????
I have tried to open the files in both MX and MX2004 with the same result. Any ideas?
PS:- I don't know how I ended up being an Instructor, it's like getting a medal without going to the war?????

HI thanks for looking in im not even a newby yet but im doing some recording for a talking book customer and they asked me to put it in flash format obviosly not wanting to appear completely ignorant in front of my boss i said yep cool no problem but the little guy inside said WHATS FLASH??

1 whats flash in simpletons terms bearing in mind i only got a short attention span like that of a smoked kipper?

Saving Variables From A Flash Cd-rom To A Xls File Format
Hello everyone,

I’m not an expert at action scripting so any help would be appreciated. I am working on a cd rom for a client and the major challenge is saving the variables collected (like which sports the user plays in and out of school, how much booze they drink, whatnot) and saving them in an .xls (Excel) file or any format that Excel can read (like .CSV or comma separated value)

Now this wouldn't be so hard if this was on the web. All you would have to do is pass the variables with a Geturl with a long query string with POST and send it off to a page with PHP that can probably handle it. Sadly, the project is entirely offline (although
will be copied onto a hard drive, so nothing has to reference the cd), so all we have for tools is Java (I'm not opposed putting the thing in a chrome less frameless html page if it gives us access to java)

If anyone has any suggestions that would be great!

Unexpect File Format - Flash MX 2004 To 8
Hey Guys,

I'm in a bit of a jam here. I did some work at home over the weekend in flash mx 2004, and e-mailed it to myself at work so I could present it Monday (today). But now when I try to open the fla's in Flash 8 I get an error saying "Unexpected File Format".

Is there any sort of conversion utility or anything out there?? I need to show this stuff in 2 hours, so I'm a little tight for time.

What Is The Best File Format To Import Into Flash From Photoshop?
Is there any way to import files from flash where they preserve their transparency? In Director, you can import as .png and if you drag all the cast members at the same time, they will keep their position on the stage to match the position they were in photoshop. Does flash have something like that? I'm trying to import items that aren't rectangular... and I want them to keep their polygon shape in flash. I tried importing .png's into flash but when you click on them, their active area is huge!... like a big square on the stage.

Problem Converting Flash File To Animated .Gif
I've never made an animated gif from a flash file but the flash help says to simply do the following:

Flash exports the first frame in the movie as a GIF, unless you mark a different keyframe for export by entering the frame label
#Static. Flash exports all the frames in the current movie to an animated GIF unless you specify a range of frames for export by
entering the frame labels #First and #Last in the appropriate keyframes.

No matter what I try, when I export to an animated gif, the image that shows up is not animated but I only get the first frame. What could be missing and what areas should I check? Thanks in advance.

Best Type Of Sound File Format To Use With Flash?
I am trying to figure out the best way to use music incorporated with a small flash music manager I made.

If you visit : http://www.storyoftheyear.net (awesome band, btw!) you will see their music player that loads in the bottom right corner and plays entire clips of their music.

I got the idea from there and incorporated it to my site at http://www.usdphidelts.com and made a my music player with a XML backend to point to small .mp3 clips. The files aren't very big, but they take FOREVER to load.

Any ideas how I can get INSTANT music like on the SOTY site?

Output To An HTML File In A Tabular Format From Flash
HI all,
This is wht I want to do, my flash file has a few input text fields, when i run the movie in the standalone or the web n populate the text fields wit values , such as supposing im adding 2 numbers n on the click of a button "A" im adding them n the output is shown in a 3rd text field.
Now there is a second button "B" and when I click on it an HTML file is created n shows the output of my additions, i.e the two numbers and their total in a tabular format.
Well i know how an HTM file can be done on the click of the button , but u guys have to help me out on the rest.

Converting Flash Scripts Inside .fla Into External .as File?
Hi, I have a client that for some reason they are wanting to convert their .fla project and break up the 8 script layers of their game, and put it in an external .as file for the Flash project.

Unexpected File Format Error - Flash MX Pro 2004
I've done a search on this and haven't found a resolution. Hopefully someone can help.

I have Flash MX Professional 2004. I recently installed the update to 7.2, and now any time I try to open a file I created pre-update, I get an error saying "Unexpected File Format."

I have seen people get this error on cross-platform between Mac and PC, or when trying to open up a newer format on an older version of Flash. But this is on my same PC, with Flash opening up an older version Flash (7.2 opening a 7.0 file).

Anyone who may have help in this regard, please let me know! I desperately need to open these files. Thanks in advance.

Save Vector File Format From Dynamic Flash Page

I need to save a vector file from a dynamic page.

It works like this: The site allows each user to create a design from various elements in a database, then it saves the layout of each user's design in the database.

NOW, I need to retrieve that data, and compile a printable vector-format file, like an eps, AI, or even SWF.

What will be the best option for this?

Flash MX Saving A File In Flash 8 Format... Why?
Hi everyone, just wanted to know exactly what is the deal with opening up a flash file i created in mx and then saving it as flash 8 format.

I was just working on a file I created in mx. I went to publish settings and set it to flash 6 and published. File worked flawlessly. Then I hit save later on after some work and it said saving to flash 8 destroys certain things if u want you can use save as to save as flash mx format. I figured well since my publish settings are correct (flash 6) why not just save it so I did and wham my flash file stops working.

Anyone define exactly why my file is not working now. Its a basic mp3 file player.

Need A Quick Flash File Done
I apologize for springing this on you guys, but I need a quick flash file done. An experienced flash guru could probably have it done in 5 to 10 minutes.

In a nutshell, I need the 3 words you see to "fade in and fade out" at different times. There position does not need to change, just as long as all 3 are not showing SOLID at the same time. If you could do the same to the little musical "notes" in the background, that would be cool to.

I hope this is all you need. The size of the photoshop file (400 x 90) is the same size the Flash canvas needs to be.
