Introduction :)
hiya all

i just joined and got a stupid Q. well prolly for most of u guys.. hehe

Q.: i have one movie on level 0 and one movie on
level 1. if i unload the level 0 movie, my level
1 movie unloads too.
is that normal e.g. i have to keep one movie on level 0 or is that a bug or am i just tooooo stupid. hehe

Introduction

I am Jayant from India. I am a freelance computer service provider for administrative catagory. I also can design simple web sites. I have always been passionate about Flash Animations and I have now decided to learn this wonderful software.

Introduction To XML
Hi,

I am just beginning to explore the value of working with Actionscript and XML.

All I have done so far is read some W3C stuff which has taught me the difference between XML and HTML. Which I understand.

But, what I'd like to know up front is what are the advantages of working with Flash and XML

1. What kind of things does it enable you to do?
2. Does it make things faster/smaller?
2. Are there any working examples the demonstrate the value of learning XML?

Is there a good book / primer anyone can suggest also.

AS - Introduction To AS?
I have been using Flash happily enough the last few years, and while I am confident within flash using most aspects of the program, Action Script is still a foreign language to me. I really want to get into it and learn more than the basics of play, stop etc.

But my main issue is what would be the best way to learn AS? Start learning with resources, books or tutorials on AS2 and then learn the differences in AS3? Or just start fresh with AS3?

Hey everyone. First and foremost I'm new to both Macromedia Flash MX and these forums, so I just wanted to introduce myself.

I just read and complete the "Macromedia Flash MX : Training From the Source" book (500 pages in 5 days, w00t!) and I now purchased the "Macromedia Flash MX : Advanced ActionScripting" book (600 pages, YARG!)

Anyways, I look forward to becoming a veteran poster, and I hope I can help people as much as they can offer their help. Communities make the program all the more fun. I have Macromedia Studio MX (MAD W00T to Macromedia, I love these programs!)

But anyways, I got a simple question to start things off.

I want to learn how to lead a movie. Right now I have a MC in _root that is given an Instance Name of mcSubMenu. When I get to frame 20, I apply this AScript to the FRAME.

_root.mcSubMenu.loadMovieNum("test.swf", 1);

I was expecting the test.swf movie (which is located in same directory as the _root's SWF file) to "load" into the initial mcSubMenu, but nothing happens. I thought, "Maybe you can't use loadMovieNum when you TEST MOVIE.".

So I changed the code to :

_root.mcSubMenu.loadMovieNum("test.swf", 0);

and the entire movie disappeared (btw, test.swf is just a 50x50 black SWF file.

Can anyone shed some light on how to do this properly? My thanks in advance!

Newbie Introduction
Good Morning All ~

I am new to this forum and I just wanted to introduct myself. My name is Kimberlea and I live in Oregon. I am currently enrolled in college earning a bachelors in Web Design & MultiMedia. This term my classes are Flash 8 Pro and 3ds Max 7. I learned of this forum through my flash instructor and wanted to check out what all you guys have. I am still working my way around this site, but so far I have to say that I have enjoyed the sound effects and loop sounds, which is what we will be working on this coming week.

I have truly enjoyed using Flash 8 and am looking forward to learning all there is to know about it. I have also had classes in Adobe PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign, and DreamWeaver 8. Prior to taking these classes I had little or no knowledge of any of these programs. I have been doing basic HTML website designing for the last 8 years or so. Anyway, just wanted to say hi real quick and now I will go back to browsing around.

I have wanted to learn flash for a long time, but I never really took the initiative until recently, when we started doing flash in my computer science class at school. Unfortunately, we didn't get very far past making buttons, but I wanted to continue. I figured it would be a good idea to find a place with lots of experienced actionscript people. You know, just in case .

#2: Question about trigger-based menu system.
OK, so I am working on a game in flash for a school project. I want to have an NPC who sells stuff. What I was trying to do was set everything up so that once the main character got a certain distance from the shop owner, a menu would appear, which is frame 2 of an otherwise invisible movieclip. If anyone can explain how to do this properly(in terms of actionscript), or has a better idea on how to make a menu system(of which i'm sure there are many), please post here!!

Introduction To Web Programming
Where should I start? Similar to how Latin is the basis for so many other languages, what would be the starting point for programming? Would I start out learning about OOP and then move on to the specific languages (Java, ActionScript, PHP, etc.)?

I currently know bits and pieces of different languages but I feel like I need a better foundation to build on. Any advice is appreciated.

Introduction To Flash For Programmers?
The main problem I have with Flash is that it's quite obviously been designed with graphic designers in mind instead of programmers. All the tutorials I have found on the software seem to assume that you are a graphic designer as soon as they start.

What I need is a tutorial describing simple things like how to create a good quality image from scratch and use it, what timelines and symbols and stuff actually are, and what a frame is. To me a frame is a child of a FRAMESET tag, I don't understand the concept of frames and how to use them from a graphics perspective. I know things like where the timeline is and what frames are visually in the Flash design client, but how to give them content and use them effectively is perplexing me.

I've worked on some pretty big Flash projects before (though you'd never know it by reading above) but until now I've always had somebody else to do all the graphic creation, frame, and animation side for me whilst I've concentrated on the ActionScript, database connectivity, and functionality side of things. I've never actually had to create a movie from scratch before but I've got to start sometime and now's as good a time as any.

Are there any coders out there that have successfully made the transition to Flash and if so do you have any advice for me on how to do so. My background is in Java, PHP, SQL, HTML, JavaScript, etc.

Sorry if I sound like even more of a newbie than you are used to around here, but I'm keen to get into this side of the market and I'd very much appreciate any help or advice you experts can give me.

Website Introduction Movie
Alright guys --- I have tried to ask the obvious questions about preloaders and resolution issues by using the search button. I know how annoying that can get. I am good to go, but I can't figure out one problem. I have my preloader go from scene 1 'preloader', to scene 2 'website' using the right scripting -- works like a charm, and then I try to have it play an intro movie but for some reason, the movie loops when i click on the enter button, instead of going to the correct frame (frame 2). Here is the action scripting on the button:
on (press) {
_root.gotoAndPlay(2);
}
now I KNOW that problem relates to the _root. But Ive changed it to just
gotoAndPlay(2);
and
gotoAndPlay("website", 2);

and neither of those codes work either.

let me know what you guys think.. if anything I could post the file on here and you experts can help me out.

Movie Flash Introduction Help

Getting Started With Flash MX (And Introduction)

Preloader And Introduction Questions
Okay, so I've looked through the forums and have found about a billion entires on preloaders. But, my question is on integrating one into a full site.

See, I have this introduction, and it's really cool. What I want to do is to have it so that as soon as the intro starts up, it starts up the preloader, and once the movie is loaded the user has the option to either continue to the intro or skip ahead to the main site. I also want to integrate the same preloader into the main site.

Now, details on the preloader. What I want is to have this graphic fade in from nothing to full on as the movie loads, with a percentage done text box. I'm a terrible programmer, but a great designer. So, what I need is the code for the preloader, where to put said code, how to make the animation, and how I integrate this into my main site. Introduction And Advice/Direction
Hey all,

My name is Eric. I teach Web Design at a high school in Michigan and want to teach my advanced students to create basic pages in Flash 8. I have a very limited knowledge of Flash, but I am very teachable. I'm looking for a tutorial to learn how to create a simple, yet somewhat dynamic website in flash. By dynamic, I just mean animated buttons and animated page transitions. Is anyone aware of a resource or tutorial I can find that will help me? I found a pretty good one on tutorialized.com, but the creator skipped a step somewhere and I can't figure out where.

I am a moderator on a different forum, so I know this question has been discussed multiple times. So I can assure you that I am using the search feature as you are reading this

I am relatively close to figuring out what I want to do. Perhaps there is someone who would be willing to look at the .fla file I have so far and help me figure out what I'm missing.

An Introduction To Scaling Images ?
Im new to this so id love some help here guys i have a bvery simple background image here i know i could easily reproduce it or use trace bitmap but nither of those will work with the other images in my project .

So im looking for a way to scale this using actionscript so it dosnt loose its shape its a pritty simple operation in photoshop vhop out hat middle and shove the bottom up thats basicly what im trying to do .

ive tried to use it with 9 slice scaling ive even chopped it up into 9 parts but it looks like im doing something wrong .

Flash Introduction Button Problem
Greetings to all,

I'm starting to build my own website introduction and I urgently need help for the buttons action script.

What i have in mind is that I have my 4 buttons, home, profile etc rotating around a sphere in the UP frame.

When the mouse is over a particular button, it stops rotating and there is a popout to describe what the category is about without clicking.

Introduction Clip To Each Video In FLV Player
Hi,

I've been following Todd's excellent 'Modifications to Lees Netstream player' thread and specifically the post on adding an introduction movie to the start of your playlist.

It got me thinking it would be really good if you could prefix each video within the playlist with a short introductory flv, for example a branding animation for my clients video work.

Sadly its a bit beyond me - does anyone have any pointers on how you would approach this?

Creating Dynamic Text (Introduction To Flash MX , PDF Format)
I am new to the Flash software and am having problems with "creating dynamic text", starting on page 36 to page 40. What the problem is that I went and loaded text to my movie using the "loadVariables" action. This action includes a parameter to specify the path to the variable text. The text is in a file named "copy.txt" within the "Introduction to Flash MX Tutorial". The path is: ../assets/copy.txt

What I did was to open the "Actions" panel, then chose Actions >Browser/Network, then double-clicked "loadVariables". The ActionScript is then added to the Script pane. Parameters for the action appear above the Script pane.

In the "URL" text box I typed the path to the text file as: ../assets/copy.txt per instructions on page 40 of the "Introdution to Flash MX" tutorial. When I saved the movie and clicked on test movie the movie ran as it should but the text did not appear, instead an output box with the following appeared: "Error opening URL "file:///C|/Program%20Files/Macromedia/Flash%20MX/Tutorials/assets/copy.txt". So what did I do wrong??

Anyone Nice Enough To Help?
Basically I have 6 Layers

RedButton
Blue Button
Green Button
OrangeButton
Text
Actions

Each of the buttons corresponds to a different word which I have nested inside the "Text" movieclip which when pressed SHOULD bring up the word with a little alpha from 0-100
Each word has an instance name to be referred to as well.

Here's my action script for the first button

}

When it compiles it gives me an error of "Field name expected after "." operator. Anyone know what this is or how I can fix my code....see any other errors? What's the best way to approach this movie?

A Nice Easy One
This is for an actionscript fade in:

on (release) {
for (i = 0; i < 100; i ++) {
circle._alpha = circle._alpha + 1;
}
}

There is no delay on the fade. How do I create a nice steady fade? Do I need to use two frames? I though the point of the for loop was to do it in one.
