Open Source Debugger For Flash, Flex And AIR
As developers at De Monsters we werenâ€™t totally happy with the current Flash, Flex or AIR debuggers out there. So we decided to create our own debugger called De MonsterDebugger. Today weâ€™ve got a great new version that we want to share with the community for free.

De MonsterDebugger started out as an internal tool that helped us with the development of different ActionScript 3 projects. The past several months weâ€™ve been working on a new version of this internal tool. With this new version you can explore your live application, adjust properties and run methods all at runtime. You can trace objects of any type (String, Array, XML or even custom classes) to De MonsterDebugger and it will show the complete structure of that object in an easy-to-read tree structure. De MonsterDebugger is made with Adobe Flex and brought to the desktop with Adobe AIR.

Accessing Third Party Tools
Hi everybody!

Is there a way to access a third party tool every time my movie is loaded through a web page?

What I am trying to do is whenever someone accesses my web page (which will be a Flash MX movie), I want to be able to access the third party tool to retrieve the latest information and display it on my page. Something like a real-time stats info. page.

Can this be done through Flash or would it be easier to do through html/javascript?

Any help/advice would be appreciated.

How Do I Open Source A Flash Application?
I'd like to know how best to open-source a flash application.

I'm part of a team that's coded a flash avatar application used by 1000s of children.

Our app follows the standard avatar/ chat route... users choose from a variety of pre-set options to decide how their avatar looks. This avatar can then be imported into various games on our site that have the avatar files embedded.

The avatar application itself is made up of 3 core flash files that interact with a database where users' details are stored.

The only thing we'll be making available is the three fla's of the avatar and documentation explaining how we made it go (which people can implement/ignore/ improve on).

For the purposes of open sourcing the code, people won't have access to our database as for testing we use xml files that replicate the database responses. So we will include these.

We want to make it open source so that users and other interested people can find new ways of implementing it.

But I need some help knowing how best to present the files we have for open-sourcing.

Has anyone ever done anything like this before? Has anyone ever seen a project like this before?

If so, please let me know how you did it/ how it was done.

As many of you know there are quite a few Open Source programmes out there now that allow people without huge bank balances to have the power of professional programmes.

A good example would be GIMP over Photoshop.

I want to know if there is an OS alternative to Macromedia/Adobe Flash? I can't really afford the real thing at the mo.

Hi all, I'm looking for a solid open source Flash media player for a website and I thought you all might have some ideas. The features I would like are as follows:

1. Can play video and display images
2. Some kind of thumbnail system for selecting media to be displayed
3. Configurable via xml or other file
4. Full controls (play, ffwd, volume, etc)
5. Preferably free, I won't be making any money off of it, just something for a personal project

I figured some of you might have come across something along those lines. I'm thinking something along the lines of YouTube but that displays images as well as videos.

Does anyone know of an opensource or paid for script that allows you to create a band profile where a musician can upload his music like myspace, music.com, tagworld. It can be in either flash or ajax, but all Ive come up with is the jw player, and the xspf, and I will have to do all kinds of mods to them to make it work in my application, it would be nice if somebody has stumbled on to an Opensource app that I can adapt the user database to my own application...

All i need is simple

I created this thing a year or 2 ago. No class, not optimized, no whatever. Just straight up coding in 1 frame. Take a look at the script, edit it, use it, whatever you like to do with it

Open Source Flash Site To Study?
Hello folks,
I've been taking tutorial after tutorial (and learning alot!) I think I've come a ways, but I've found that studying .fla files really teach me quite a bit. I was wondering if anyone knows of anywhere that I can find a whole website that I can study the source from or that offers a .fla file? or go to to download?

Looking For An Open Source Flash Image Uploader
I am looking for an application that I am not sure exists. Basically, I want to embed a flash application in a normal html form. This application would let the user browse an image on their local machine and once selected, let the user resize, crop, and/or put text on the image. The changes would be made on the user's machine and the resulting image would be sent when the form was submitted.

Has anyone seen anything like this out there?

Flash Open Source Backbutton / Deeplinking Tool
In the past couple weeks, a lot of attention has been paid to the SWFAddress script written by Rostislav at asual.com. While this is a huge step forward, I wanted let everyone know about another (better and easier) solution to consider using.

My friend Matt Tretter at sunKING Digital has been working on a StateManager class for Flash for a few months now, and has published an article and a working sample here:

Why should you use StateManager as a solution to your Flash back-button and deep-linking needs??

1. This is the first method that doesn't break in Safari when you navigate to a new page.
2. Unlike SWFAddress, is clean and Object Oriented (less ActionScript code required).
3. Thanks to JSInterface, you can import external JavaScript files directly from Flash.
4. While it integrates seamlessly with Geoff Stearn's SWFObject , it doesn't require that you use it. In fact, unlike SWFAddress, it degrades gracefully if JavaScript is turned off.

Kudos to Matt for getting this working well. Hopefully we'll be seeing more and more sites integrating back-button and deep-linking into their functionality, now that there are a few open source tools out there.

I have looked into creating a real time interactive character chat. I don't have as much time as I would like to explore it, so maybe posting it here will get it further along. First, here is a rough demo of what I have in mind..

I was exploring with the password page on differentiating users to attatch a character to, with little success.

Here is a version of it with it attatched to a basic PHP chat script. I used a basic version of this chat...

to write the text to a file, but once again, how to set up multiple users for the character in the PHP chat demo below.........

It is basic in design for now, but the room could be improved graphically and linked to other rooms. Actually, the theory could go with any interactive online idea, e commerce shopping, games, multi user chats, prob more but I digress.
I have tried seperating users with the password idea and conditional if statements, ie.......

I gave up on that approach because even if you attatch the character movie, it still does not allow for interaction with other characters. So, I began exploring webservers. I looked into Moock.org's chat room, Flashnow online webserver, Flash Nexus, and Aquaserver from the Macromedia site. I believe this can be achieved with an XMLsocket() connection and it appears that Flash Nexus would be the easiest to accomplish it with. I, however, use Windows Melinnium OS and I can't seem to get it to work online. Anyway, that is actually down the road a bit. The problem that seems to be the largest is scripting an array. Someone good at arrays must have an idea how to go about it better, but I am thinking it will have to be an array set up to calculate character position, other character positions, character features, users mouse position. All Globally. Prob alot more, but I think that is the right approach.

The other thing I was testing was character development if I could ever get to the point of multi user funtionality. I found this here at FK, seems like it would work great for creating new characters as well as animating them.......
