Question About Flash Servers For MMOs
I am student from Carnegie Mellon University. My team project is to develop a Massively multiplayer online game using Flash. Something like "Habbo Hotel" that player didn't need to download or install anything. (we are making game, not making chat room.) I am doing a research on technology, about SmartFoxServer, Adobe Flash Media Interactive Server 3, ElectroServer, WOWZA. I am really confuse, it seems that all these sever are good, so I need help.
Out of all these severs (SmartFoxServer, Adobe Flash Media Interactive Server 3, ElectroServer, WOWZA), Which one will you recommend for making a MMOs game and why?
Thankyou very much for helping.

Servers & Flash
I have a browser-related question.
I know that Internet Explorer stores information in the cache, i.e. pictures for quicker loading time when accessing the page for a second time.
Does it cache swf also?
Does in cache the variables from the swf?
I'm confused.
Flash Servers
I am just learning flash, started yesterday, and I am wondering if a host server tells you it can stream flash video, do you need to put the "<object classid="clsid:....." codebase="
Flash And Different Servers...works On One And Not On Another.
I've got the strangest problem. I uploaded a Flash website, all of the swfs and its index page to my server and it worked perfectly.
My client uploaded the same exact swfs and for some reason, one will not work.
Are there any glitches I should be aware of?

PHP, Flash Email And Web Servers
I am building (using one of the tutorials on internet)
Flash-Based Email Form Using PHP.
I followed every step creating it (actually I just customized php file that was included). But it seems I never was able to make it work.
I wonder if php scripts are supported by my web host provider.
If so..if there is limitations of using php on my web server...is there any other way to create Flash based email form using entirely Action Script.
I would appreciate any help with it.
Thanks!
Here is tutorial I followed creating email form.

How Does Flash Commnicate With Servers?
I am a designer, I like to draw pretty pictures. I started using Flash back during V.3 because I could make stuff move. :) Never really cared to be a programmer. As Flash has developed over the years, the focus has seemed to take over the complexities from Director and blend it all into one package - cool moving stuff and being able to create apps. And of course, with AS3 now, we can create some serious apps.
So, like most designers who like to draw pretty pictures and make stuff move, you can't help but to be drawn into the programming aspects of Flash, and I do enjoy it. But, I am lacking considerably in the knowledge of programming. So ...
Can anyone point me to a set of articles - in lay terms so to speak - that cover the ways in which Flash communicates with servers? I don't understand what a socket is, what a port is, and how it all works together. The deeper I get in the creating web based apps, the more I need to *at least* have some basic knowledge of these things. Google returns lots of stuff that is over my head, so I was hoping that someone out there might know of and have a link or two to articles that explain such things that is aimed at guys like me - a guy who like to draw pretty pictures but doesn't know much about programming really.
Thanks!
Communicate Javascript To Flash On Different Servers
Ok, I'm using the ol'
getURL("javascript:yourFunction(yourArgument)");
in flash to talk to my javscript file and am also talking back with:
thisMovie (movieName).GotoFrame (frame);
and so forth. The javscript has to all be contained in a linked .js file for the purposes of my project. Also the .js file and Flash file are both on one server while the link to the .js file is on another server.
Now, in testing my script works fine. And when loading the .js file from another server, all the flash movies load and all the javascript commands work just fine as well. The only thing that is not working is the communication between flash and javscript. This actually works if I load the .js source from an html file on my desktop, but not when I upload the html file to another server.
So, I'm thinking there is some problems with this kind of communication over files contained at different ip's. The question is, is there something I can do to make this work. Like maybe a way to incorporate the ip of the file I am trying to talk to or something?
Two Servers, One Flash File, Two Different Results
I made a site for a client, and I uploaded it onto our servers. It tested fine and there were no issues. However, I then uploaded it to his server so that it could be at the correct address, and on one of the pages the text began to display differently. It's wierd.
Okay, so here are the two sites
correct site
incorrect site
If you go here and click on the locations page, there are three different buttons, each for cities in or around oregon. When you click on it, it loads a txt file from a directory that is one file up from the root. On our site, the first site, the files load flawlessly without adding additional line breaks. However, on his server, the files load with extra spaces after each entry. Whats going on?
Flash Remoting To J2EE Servers
Is there any definitive list of supported server technology supported by Macromedia for Flash Remoting to J2EE???
I just posted this to Macromedia - anyone got any thoughts?
Cheers
I am somewhat dissapointed (as is my boss) in the fact that I had to spend a whole day looking around the internet and trying to configure Tomcat 3.2 only to find out that 'apparently' you can only Flash Remote to JRun4 servers and ColdFusionMX. Is this correct?
Your help file for flash remoting states the following:-
Flash Remoting supports the following application servers:
Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) application servers, including Macromedia JRun 4 and WebSphere 4. For more information, see Using Flash Remoting with J2EE Application Servers.
This gives the impression that functionality is possible with any J2EE server! Please please can you confirm the full picture.

Strange Problem With Flash And Servers
Couple of days I have trying to solve my preloader problem. Locally it worked normally but in www-server it didn't. So I tried another server and surprisingly it worked just fine. So my as is working just fine
Here are examples:
This is not working properly -> http://www.komodo.fi/test/test.html
This is working properly -> http://www.visualblack.com/test/test.html
That test loads swf file from server which size is about 3 megabytes. The first one almost instantly jumps to 100 % but the "loaded" text don't appear instantly, how it should be. I also traced and debugged this and example Opera calculates infinity percent almost instantly. It goes up to 100 on the second calculate. The second one is working right and it loads and shows the percentage right. After 100% the text "loading" appears instantly as it should be. This is so weird.
I use QueueLoader and as3 to load the swf. It doesn't make a difference what I use to load it. Always the same problem. I have checked that I have correct MIME-types on that non-working server.
I'm so bored to solve these problems so I turn to you gurus and ask for help.
Working With Two Flash Media Servers
Hi,
I am working with two FMS, one is used to record video and the other is to allow people to view the cameras live from outside the firewall. When the cameras are recording the infrormation is going to the local FMS to save on bandwidth . When someone wants to see the cameras in realtime they are connecting to the FMS I use from influxis (a FMS provider). This does not work. Whenever I have my local FMS running all rtmps are going to it even though the live feeds are clearly set to the influxis FMS. If I stop the local FMS then the live information goes out to influxis's FMS. Why is this and how do I work with one local and one non-local FMS?
Thanks,

Verizon And GoDaddy Servers Won't Play Flash?
I would greatly appreciate anyone's help. I have an HTML file that launches a .SWF file. These two files work on many servers (we've tested it), but they won't work on Verizon's webhosting or Godaddy's webhosting.
My HTML code is:
<!-- saved from url=(0013)about:internet -->
<html lang="en">
<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
<title></title>
</head>
<body bgcolor="#666666" TOPMARGIN=0 LEFTMARGIN=0 RIGHTMARGIN=0 MARGINWIDTH=0 MARGINHEIGHT=0>
<object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" codebase="http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=8,0,0,0" width="100%" height="100%" id="test" align="middle">
<param name="allowScriptAccess" value="sameDomain" />
<param name="movie" value="mm.swf?webPlayback=1" /><param name="quality" value="high" /><param name="bgcolor" value="#555555" /><embed src="mm.swf?webPlayback=1" quality="high" bgcolor="#ffffff" width="100%" height="100%" name="test" align="middle" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" />
</object>
</body>
</html>
</body>
</html>
Verizon and Godaddy were of no help. Can anyone indicate why this simple HTML file won't launch the mm.swf file that is specified? Again, this works on all servers we've tried, except for Verizon's and Godaddy's. Thank you.
Performance Differs When Flash Served By Different Servers.
hi all,
I have a flash document which when served by my own local web-server works fine as is expected.
However when I browse to our testing server (same app, same browser viewing it) the performance is noticeably slower.
Has anyone had any issues with this before - I can't imagine what it could be. The whole point of flash is to be CLIENT side right?
thanks,

Flash Media Server On Clustered Servers
Hello to all,
i am new to the Flash world and am trying to figure out if Flash Media Server Pro can be installed in a clustered server environment (active/passive). specifically:
1 - can it be set up so that when the primary server fails, the secondary server will take over any incoming requests?
2 - can this be done at the "Pro" license level?
3 - are two seperate licenses required for this, or is this usage (since it is any active/passive cluster) covered under a single license?
the items i found on the site are very specific to setting up Edge/Origin servers - but we are not looking at getting dedicated servers for this. we want to use our clustered web site servers.
with thanks for any help provided

Flash Application On Taskbar, Automatically Connect Servers ?
Hi,
We have a project that has to work in Windows.I mean we want users install the program and reach it anytime through task bar.
There must be an icon on taskbar and when we click it,a Flash window has to open.
The point is, we want the flash application work on bacground automatically when the user opens his computer and windows.
When the program starts, then we want it to connect our servers and get the daily files automatically.
Is it possible without any problem and how?
There are some software like;
SwfStudio and FlashStudio, can they handle this without a problem.I don't have many information on them, neither experience...
Any idea?
Thanks for your time

Need Some Help Re. FTP Servers
Hi. I'm brand new to this forum and I'm totally "flash" challenged. All of my designs have all been done using Paint Shop Pro and Animation Shop, so this is REALLY new for me. Now, the way I am using the flash animations is not in the conventional sense that most of you are probably using them. I am not building a web page, but I use them like you would use .gif or .jpeg graphics. I am coding them into the Headers of message boards to be used as logos, siggys or other general graphics. Now by doing this, means I have to host the .swf file on a photo site that takes those extensions (I use Ripway for them right now).
Now, I keep hearing about ftp servers and I am wondering if there is a way to use these to host all of my images to link in the message boards I build and design graphics for. For example, I have extra smiles that I have had coded into one of my boards and they are all hosted on Image Shack, can I move them and host them on an ftp server? Same as with an .swf file or a .jpg files so that I would just enter the URL as the image source and the graphic would appear?
Or, are ftp servers only for storage of files and cannot be used like an image host?
HA Fms Servers
We are looking at having two physical fms 3.0 servers for redundancy to serve content up to an edge network.
I understand we can run both servers behind a balancer in which case do they both need the $5K license?
The reason for the question is we will never saturate one server and we don't want to actually pay for two full licenses if they are not needed.
If the answer to this is yes, then:
Is is possible to run the 2nd server in failover mode so it takes the first servers license should it fail?
Content would be served from a SAN attached to both FMS servers.
TIA

Linking Outside Servers
I'm attaching the "GetUrl" action to a button in "www.firstwebaddress.com" and for the URL I'm putting "http://www.secondwebadress.com" for some reason it looks for it on the same server and doesn't recognize it as an independant web address (i.e. it comes up, cannot find http://www.firstwebaddress.com/www.s...ebaddress.com. Is there some way to make it recognize to completely get off the server

LoadVariables Across Servers
I am hoping someone can help me.
I have FlashMX application that I have loading a text file created by a ColdFusion application. I get this working just fine.
What I cant get is how to get Flash to load the variables from the .txt file from a different server. More so, is this possible while the Flash movie resides on a server running ASP?
I'd appreciate any help or comments.
XML Socket Servers
Anyone have any advise on a good reliable socket server?
I want to build chat rooms, and eventually multiplayer games.
Electro Tank seems like the standard but it so expensive. Has anyone any feedback?
Actionscript With Servers
Okay, I just transfered a Flash website to a new server that I'm handling all of the functions for. I'm having a problem with my contact form working. I tested an HTML & PHP script on the site, and it worked fine. But the Flash & PHP script that was working before, doesn't work now. I've been on the phone with the people that I purchased the server through, and they don't know what to do. So I'm just wondering if anybody has come accross the same problem as me. Is there a specific module or plug-in that I need for the server so that the Actionscripting talks to the PHP properly.
I'm really baffled as to why this doesn't work. Any help is appreciated.
Multiuser Servers?
Looking to build a multiuser real-time web app with avatars using Flash.
With possible extension to include SMS messaging at a future date.
Any suggestions on the server technology I could use eg , macromedia multi-user, Unity, Fortress etc. Chief concerns are learning curve, ease of use, integration.
Cheers

FMS And Encoder On Different Servers
Hi,
We've setup FMS on one server and our cameras and Flash Media Encoder on another. Can we do this? Do I have to configure FMS to allow a connection from our other server?
Under the FMS URL field in FME we've put: rtmp://ourip : port/live, but it says it can't connect?
Am I doing something very stupid here? I'm assuming that FMS needs to certify a connection from out other server..
Thanks,
Graham
LoadVars Across Servers.
I'm using the shimming method right now, is there mabey an easier way that doesn't require using PHP or anything

Developing For Two Servers...
Hi,
My company is about to start developing a Flash application for recording to Flash Media Server. The client has said they are concerned that if their server with FMS on it goes down, then the application will be unusable. They've asked if it is possible - and whether it has any affect on development - to have two Flash Media Servers running, so that if one server goes down, the SWF will connect to the other server. Can anybody let me know if this is possible/difficult to do?
Also, they had a few other questions for me, which I think I've found the answers to. If anybody could confirm though then I'd feel a lot happier :) They were:
Q1) Is there a way of informing users when the number of allowed connections is used up?
A1) Yes, you can have a preloader on the SWF connecting to the server which will have some informative text (e.g. "connecting - please wait a few moments. Try again later if it takes longer than...")
Q2) Can the application connect via port 80 or port 443 instead of the standard Flash port?
A2) Yes, the SWF file will try these ports if connecting over the standard Flash port fails.
Q3) Does FMS come with a tool to convert FLV files to MP3?
A3) Not currently. There are other (3rd party) tools that claim to do this (e.g. Total Video Converter).
Sorry for the bombardment with questions! If you could answer my first question, and possibly confirm any of the other assumptions, then that would be really appreciated.
Thank you!

Updating SWF's On FTP Servers
I have noticed that every time I try to update a SWF file, it takes AAAAAGES to update on the webpage.
Is there any way to make the change instant...or near enough....like HTML changes?

Referencing Files On Other Servers?
OOh how exciting!
This is my first message to the boards so Hi to one and all.
Newbieish Question:
How can I reference files (asp, swf, txt etc) on another server other than the server on which my Big Flash Movie Site (BFMS) sits?
I have my (BFMS) on a Unix platform though I have files on a Win2k platform which I would love to use for dynamic content.
Surely this i possible, anything is possible in Flash land, isn't it?
All help offered earns the prizes of full on Karma points and my eternal friendship, all you can eat.

Exchanging Resources Between Servers.
question:
project where i have 4 stations (computers) that are in multiple domains.
domain a: sql server
domain b: server side scripts (asp,php)
domain c: client side scripts (swf)
domain d: client side scripts (swf (registered users))
the main site (domain c _level0) loads domain d files in _level1.
both domains (c,d) calling files from domain b (asp,php) which are connected to the sql server on domain a.
on my first try doing it i could not recieve any answer from domain b.
i know that the server side scripts must reside on the same domain where the swf files are.
but i think there is a new method in mx called (allow domain..) that comes to resolve this problem (i think).
can someone help?
piny.
Loader Problems Between Servers
Ok,
I have a test site on my local server here that is working flawlessly. Were on an IIS server. I transfer the site to my clients Apache/PHP server and 2 of 4 swf's that are loaded externally load up to about 99 percent and then just hang. This is extremely odd. All sections are based of the same flash file and just published to different swf's. Some work, some don't ( only on the Apache server, like I had mentioned, it works flawlessly on my local IIS server ). Has anyone run into this before. I always tend to run into the one in a million problems.
Here is a link to the aformentioned finicky site.
Why Do Files Not Work On Some Servers?
I have created a flash file that references external swfs from a main file. the funny thing is that the movies play Ok on one server
but do not play on another. When you click the submit button they will not work on one server. The other servers work fine with the files though. Has anyone come across this problem before?
Please let me know if this is problem with the flash side or could this be a server problem?
This is on the server that works-

File Won't Work On All Servers
Hello I am having a problem with this project I have created for some reason when it plays external movies into the main file it dosn't work on all servers. Here is the URL of the project www.benwood.net/corrigo
When you click on the check boxes and hit the submit it should play the movies you have selected. Also when it plays in older versions of explorer or netscape the check boxes don't always work but act strangely.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. This problem has gone on far too long!
Please help!
