Flash :: Sizes In Actionscript

Actionscript Ballooning .swf File Sizes?
So I ran Flash Optimizer on this .swf I've been working on, and it told me that 80% of the filesize for my .swf file comes from the Actionscript inside it.

Now, I got a little lazy here and there and attached actions on symbols, rather than reference them in actions on frame 1. Does this increase the file size? I don't know the inner workings of Flash so I don't know how it compiles all the actions in a scene. I've optimized everything I can as far as image quality, but my damn .swf is still 280k. The Yahoo Maps take up 100k right off the back, but I can't understand why my actionscript is so beefy! It's only text right??

Actionscript Gallery: Thumbnails Different Sizes?
I followed Kirupas tutorial on making a gallery with thumbnails. However, each thumbnail has to be of same width....if not the order of the thumbs gets mixed up. I'v been trying to figure this out for a while, but i'm not as smart as you guys.....
Iv been trying to alter the thumbnails_fn(k) function, or more precisely this line:

target_mc._x = hit_left._x+(target_mc._width+5)*k;

CSS Sizes Do Not Correspond With Flash's Internal Sizes, Please Help
This is highly upsetting!

The sizes I'm setting with CSS for my Textfield do not AT ALL correspond with the size I would get if, using the same number, specificed directly through the interface. In short, a font-size:8 in a CSS file read by Flash produces far bigger type than type with size 8 set in Flash itself. In fact, the Flash CSS interpreter produces bigger type than ANY other program does for this value. What this means is that, using pixel fonts which needs to be 8px exactly, is IMPOSSIBLE, because the Flash CSS interpreter reads and interprets the size in a completely nonsensical way.

Please tell me I'm wrong?

Getting .swf Sizes Down
I need to know how to get my .swf's smaller. They are getting really big and I know there's got to be a way to compress them better. Please help.

Dif. Res --> Different Sizes?
Okay, so I'm gonna create this flash movie for my site. It should be as big as the screen of my internet explorer at 1024 x 768. So I was planning on taking a screenshot of my explorer, then measuring how large my flash movie should be to fill the screen (from top to bottom only, not from side to side).

But is this the good way to go? I mean, will the measurements be right? And also, if people have different resolutions (like 800 x 600 or higher then 1024 x 768) will it still cover the whole screen or while it be messed up?

Any help will be appreciated.

1 Animation (17 BMP's), 2 SWF's, Different Sizes?
I have this animation of 17 BMP's that I want to incorporate in my flash presentation. When I publish the animation in its own SWF, the file is a large but manageable 100 KB. However, when I copy these BMP's and paste them into my other much larger Flash presentation, these sames images almost double in file size. The image size is the same, the bitmap properties for both movies are the same, as is the compression (jpeg). The only difference is that the stage on the smaller one is the standard 550X400 px, and the larger file is 750X420. But this shouldn't make a difference, should it?

New Window Sizes
I've created a flash with several buttons, each linking to a new Flash movie. I'm getting the new windows to open fine, my problem is that they open to a full screen, not to the size dimensions of the Flash Movie I created.

How do I control the size of the new window that opens?

File Sizes?
i have build a small file that is essentially: 1) a graphic: small square that is 8pix by 9pix 2) a button: up state includes the small square 3) a movie clip: a expanding square 4) another movie clip: that has the button and movie clip #1 in it.
the whole thing comes together to make a rollover/trailing effect.
my questions is:
when i resize the small square symbol to make it smaller 6pix by 6pix. why does it it double the file size afterward? that is the only change made, and the file size jumps from 136k to 272k. what am i doing wrong?

Exporting .swf's In Different Sizes?
Does nay one know of any plugins or stand alone soft ware that would allow u to scale .swf's to different sizes and export them? I recently built a large animated video piece in flash for a client and now they would like the same thing fo there web site . .any suggestions would beee greeeaattt. (office space) Right now the best i can get is opening in quicktime and exporting as a .mov, obvious trade offs with this approach.

Why is it that my fla is 467 KB and the swf only comes to 20 KB? I am aware that there is compression or soemthing with you create the swf file... but that seems like too much? Why is there such a difference in file sizes?

Like, the first page is 570*200, the second 570*1400 etc...
A friend told me it has something to do with htmlcoding.
I do not know. So, if you know, I would be vrey pleased by an answer.

hi, i am making a website for a buddy of mine and am running into a bit of a problem... every page on the site consists of three flash movies, one is a header, middle is the body and the lower on is a footer. i have a couple of questions some of which may be a little off topic:

would it be ok to combine the three flash movies into one and just link off the intro page directly to the .sfw file? (i.e. don't use HTML altogether) it works technically, but i'm not sure if it is a good idea. here is the problem, his clients are about half designers and half general public, he feels the gen public uses an 800 X 600 screen setting and that most designers use a 1024 X 768 screen setting. problem is that i have no idea how to make an HTML file fill the screen no matter what screen size people are using and by linking to an SWF it just fills itself in a lot easier... hope that makes sense... any suggestions?

ok i have two dynamuic txt fields, which load up two differrent external .txt's... in flkash the fonts and size and colour are both the same. but for some reason one is larger than the other......

Question i have a Interactive CD i'm making

and

i have a movie and ann option of two sizes for the movie big and small

so i have to .swf's imported into the main timeline and the .swf's have the .mov embeded into it the original size of the .mov's is as follows

.mov 320 X 240 = 132 MB .swf = 59.8 MB

.mov 720 X 480 = 388 MB .swf = 56.4 MB

what is the go

it's twice the size but 3 > less < MB

I'm trying to change the size of a box by dragging the corners. I've looked around this site (and others) to see if it already exists, with no luck. Has anyone seen anything like this? If not, how do you think I should start? Thanks.

Loadmovie & Swf's In Different Sizes
been looking around for this all afternoon but can't find anything. i don't even know how to search properly, since i'm out of keywords.

anyway, maybe you can help:

i have a flash movie, and i load an external flash file via loadmovie().

now, i can do all the positioning, loading, replacing etc. but since the external swfs i load have things like jpgs that scroll from left to right, i can see all the stuff that's supposed to be outside of the stage perimiters.
this leads to very ugly results.

is there a way to remove the off-stage parts of those movies, or hide them?
i'd try masks, but the external movies are all different sizes, and i am not sure i can resize masks with actionscript. besides, i'd like to see the original flash movie underneath that playing external swf. (it's like previewing your movie and then dragging the preview window and suddenly you see the "outside".)

Random SWF Sizes
Does anyone know why Flash rather nastily decides to randomly change the file sizes of SWFs? I have a FLA that i published as a SWF and it was 4MB which was too big so i took lots out and changed the FLA name and published the SWF which was then 400k which was fine. Ive since noticed a spelling mistake in the SWF so i went back into the reduced FLA, changed the spelling and published & was rather surprised when the SWF came out at 2.5MB! Ive checked it extensively and it is exactly the same SWF except its 5 times the size! Anyone that can provide help with this/explain this would be great

im just wondering about file sizez and how big the average flash site is?

i've been making a flash site and its very basic but its all in one file and one scene. then i view it through html. but its massive. im worried that if i put it on the interent itas going to take forever to view.

so i was wondering if anyone can enlighten me about how to organise my filing better and if there a way to buil falsh sites to stop them being massive in file size.

i'm trying to make a questionaire window popup with another movie in it but the movies size is pretty small, pixel wise. this may be a html question, but how can i get the window to be the same size as the movie?

Hi, Get ready for a potentially dumb and fundamental question. But one that I can't seem to find a conclusive answer to.

I want to create a site entirely in flash. I want the size of the stage to be viewed on all screen sizes without the publishing settings changing the original size of my jpegs.

What is the best size to make the stage for my movie and what publishing settings shall I use?

If anyone can help. I'd appreciate it. I've heard 720x540. I've heard 800x500...

Why Do My Swf Sizes Double? Help
I am a actionscript beginner using mx 2004 and trying to control audio via actionscript. Probem is.. When i set the audio files to 'export for ActionScript' so that they can be called, my swf sizes double even though the sound is being exported as 22khz speach. Can anyone explain why this is and offer a solution??

How do I set it up so that when I upload my movie, it shows on a screen that exactly the size of the movie, not full screen with a ton of space around it?

I was wondering if there was an easy way to export a smaller size of the same aspect ratio. Meaning if I have a movie that I built at 728x90 is there a way to export it at 468x60 without resizing the stage and moving things around?

ok , I kave a movieClip that has a little fade effect in it, in the layer below the fade effect, I have a empty movieClip called content.
When I load .swf into this content clip, the movie might be bigger than the fade effect above it. How do I match the size of the effect with the movie I load?

Pop Ups Of Different Sizes In Same Window?`
I'd like to have a user click on a button that will spawn a pop-up of a specific size. If the user clicks on another button, I'd like for that pop-up to show a different image but it may be a different size.

In other words, can you manipulate the same pop-up window's size so that you don't have several different pop-up windows of several different sizes?

Window Sizes
I have portrait and landscape size photos I would like to display through a series of pages. My problem is when the user is on the first photo which is landscape and clicks the "next button" the window size doesn't change from landscape to the next photo which is portrait, so the portrait is cut off. I've tried changing the window size in the script and I've also renamed the window but that opens up another pop up, and I just want one window for the whole series.

Is there any way I can do this?

Changing Sizes
I have an odd question.. is there any way of dynamically changing the height of a swf (if there are more than a certain number in a list, the page gets longer to compensate).

Just need to know if i have to do a slight redesign of a page, or if it will work the way it is.

Help With Brush Sizes
Hey guys, I'm a complete newbie to Flash MX, as I downloaded the trial only today. I would really like to buy it when my trial is up but things are going so well so far.

I'm using Flash for my drawings, and I'm not making movies. My problem is that the pen pressure is not working for my tablet. My tablet is fully installed on this computer and I have never had any trouble with it on any sort of image program. I usually use Photoshop.

The lines that I've been drawing are thin and thick in some places, but not where I've been pressing down on my tablet. It's really strange and I can't work out why it's not working. I was just wondering if a Flash veteran could help me here.

Also, how come when you zoom in the brush doesn't get bigger? I know that it is supposed to be that way, but I found it really inconveniant...

I am designing a site that I'd like to fit into snug like size window. As well as have popups to play videos in mini windows.

I THINK that I must
1.) use javascripting for a separate button. Publish a button html & button SWF. Take the button HTML. Code it with:

2.) make a totally different Fla/HTML & add my fully designed site inside as a movie.

4.) it scares me to thing that I'll have to create 1 button/java/html situation for my main site. Then create a million little button/java/html's for my indv video popups.

5.) God please let that not be the case. I am so close to answering this I know it!!

Getting File Sizes

I have written an AS3 code which preloads multiple images one at a time and my question is if there is any method to get the file sizes of those images before starting the whole preload process? This way i could get the total size of all images and Flash could display the percentage loaded of all pictures.

Movie Sizes.
Hey, I had a quick question about the actual logistics of flash.

Say I set my stage dimensions to 700x300. I can create something on the main timeline to those dimensions and it fits exactly. Now, if I go and create a new symbol and create a 700x300 image, it doesn't fit properly.

I don't understand how the sizes aren't uniform over all the MC's.

FreeMX - Can I Specify Sizes With This.
I keep reading posts about how it can open up a browser window in front of the projector file but everyone over looks the users second question.... can you specify size? F11? or any other alterations to that browser window without using javascript(since you cant use it in projectors)? Please help i have been searching the boards for 2 days now hopeing i didnt have to post a seemingly never ending question. i have flash mx AND mx 2004 so if it doesnt work for 2004 i will just go back to mx and do it with that.

SWF And FLV File Sizes

I have an flv file and the same flv file in an swf file. Both files are the same size. So, it seems that it doesn't matter, whether you import an flv file or an swf file, to keep your file size small. Is this correct ?

I need to show different flv movies which differes with there sizes (width, height) in original dimensions in flash. Is there way to recognize this values to setup Video object to show video without scaling.
Can I do that with progressive download?
Can I do that with stream download?

Maybe flashcom (FMS2) may recognize flv files dimesions?

I want to re-direct the site depending on the users monitor resolution.
I was thinking of these 3 sizes:

1024 x 768
1280 x 960
Do these cover all my bases?

Publish In Various Sizes
I created a flash file 864 X 486 and want a smaller version at 50%. I know they have a setting in the publishing settings under the HTML heading to change the size of the swf file area. But it looks like all it does is just squeeze the original size and doesn't look crisp or clean. Especially text looks bad. Is there a way to export or publish the file in different dimenisions without recreating the whole thing with a different stage size?
