Importing Video Without Sorenson Spark.
Hi guys.

Is it possible to import videofiles (.mov) into flash without losing any quality?

Even though I select the quality: 100 in the Sorenson Spark compressor, the movie still looks badder than the original. And it really shouldn't.

I don't care about the size of the swf, since I'm doing this for a CD project.

is it possible?

Sorenson Sqeezed Video: Larger Swf On Export?
I am trying to compress videos for a CD-Rom.
I was using Premiere to do this and was getting them down significantly but the quality was compromised to the point that I think my client would not be happy.
So, I downloaded Sorenson squeeze and compressed the file and it went down to 2MB!! Which I was thrilled with. I brought it into Flash and set the quality at 95%, separated the audio and video (like I had done before I downloaded Sorenson) and the file is 10MB when I export it. I don't get it.
I've been in the forums and checked some stuff out...like I used the Cinepak codec for a test on the original file and it was still bigger on export. I tried the Sorenson codec, as well and got the same result.
I am totally frustrated. It wasn't doing this brofre...Flash always compressed the files with video to something smaller than the original.
What am I doing wrong? There is this wonderful software that is compressing my video files (Sorenson), which I thought was an answer to my prayers...and then the result is a larger swf on export? What gives?

Flash 8, Video, Compression, Sorenson Squeeze?
Here's my dilema... I run a large consumer oriented website that delivers video as .mov and wmvs. To provide a better/smoother experience for our visitors, we're considering the use of flash to display our videos.

I'm still using flash 2004mx & was considering purchasing the sorenson squeeze suite to compress the flvs. Can someone please give me the lowdown on video in Flash 8? Is Squeeze really worth $500?!

I'm leaning towards the sorenson route because I can maintain flash 7 compatibility and have great looking video. I'm reulctant to go to flash 8 (assuming it has great video output) because about 20% are still on some form of flash 7.

What's your take on this? The help is much appreciated.

Best Format For Video ?

I am about to start working on a new online application using manly Flash, in this application the user will login and download 20 to 50 second Video clips (160X120 frame size), using the Flash interface the user is going to control the movies (Stop, Play etc.). I am going to put the movies in different SWF clips and use movieClip.loadMovie to call the into the main movie.

this is my plan but if anyone can think here can think of a better way to do it please write.

From your experience what kind of format should I use for the movies ? I read about the new FLV format what are the advantages of that format ? how does an FLV movie differ from a simple SWF with MOV movie embedded in it ?

Im not sure whether its the right place to post this. Anyhow here goes my requirement.
I did a small flash player for playing Video files. Everything goes fine when the user gives flv format for playing. But when the user gives other format like wmv, dat, avi etc., nothing happens. i need a java program that converts other Video formats to flv.

Any pointers/sites would be more helpful

Converting .SWF To Video Format
I need help converting .SWF files to video format like AVI. I tried exporting it in Flash its self but the quality is poor. Does anyone know of any high quality encoders out there that they know would do the job? I am planning on converting my flash files so I can submit them to websites like YouTube.

Converting From Any Video Format To FLV On The Fly?
Does anyone know if it is possible to have a flash site stream a movie from a URL provided by the user and show the video in flash regardless of what format it is in originally? For instance www.someblablasite.com/myfunnyvideo.mov or .avi or .wmv or .ra or whatever they are called these days...

Is it at all possible? Im not expecting a working solution, i just need to know if it is possible. Youtube seem to manage it, and i saw a post asking something like this further down, but no one had answered. Even if the solution incorporates some other programming language, I still wanna know (i just... learn it)... =)

Converting M2P Format Video To Flv
Hi All,

Recently my client supplied me videos in M2P format to be used in Flash project. I guess this format is MPEG2 which is used by HDTV or Broadcaster.

I was trying to convert it to flv format but My Flash 8 could not accept it for conversion. Ultimately I requested for MPEG1 format and it worked very well.

Is it that M2P format can not be converted to flv or am I missing something?

Changing Video Format
I've got a file which has a flash video (flv) file in it, now I want to convert it to mpeg or avi or any standard movie type to play on a website without it getting restricted due to intended audiences filters blocking .swf files. I tried changing the publish settings, but it just gave me the canvas and didn't play the actual video, the same happened when I tried to export the movie. Any ideas?

Best Video Format For Use In Flash MX?
Against my better judgement, I'm being asked to run a video in a flash site I'm hired to build (notice I said "build", not create, since I'm basically a slave at this monment, stripped of my creativity )

Apparently, this client doesn't care about download time and all those other "details". Anyway...what's the best video format to use in Flash MX? Their plan is to run it embedded in a object. I've never tried video in Flash and I'm not sure if this even works.

i'm wirking on a project and want to use a lot of embedded video
normally i use mpg or mpeg or mov video files
but this project is dirrerent because i used a "bluescreen"
which means that my background i white (no background)
this means that .mov dont work because the background in the .mov
becomes light grey (#CCCCCC - 18%) instead of clear white
also tried mp4 but the sound dont seen to work when imported.

so it looks like i'm stuck on Mpeg, Mpg or wma formats ?

Streaming Video In A Flash Format
If you have ever visited foxnews.com, they have a free video section on the right-hand side of the screen. I've watched a number of those videos and they look to be very high quality. Some are five minutes in length. If I right click on the video, it give me some flash information/options.

I've used macromedia flash before and have basic skills with it. I've used it to creat introductions to my website and have been able to add music and motion through trial-and-error and hands-on learning.

However, I don't understand how they use flash to have these long, five minute videos that look like they are streaming. I've got a digital video camera and video editing software. When I create a move that is three minutes long and add audio, it's 65 megs or more. I've tried to convert these to flash format and still get huge filesize. If I reduce the quality of the video in the video editing software, I loose lots of picture quality and it looks horrible.

Can someone explain how they make these good looking video clips that play with a flash plug-in and have such a long playing time (which I would expect means having a large file size). I'd like to put some of my videos on the net so friends can see them, but now when they are multiple megs large.

[F8] Problem Converting SWF Into Video Format
I have a swf with a video in it that I created. I want to export the swf as an avi from Flash 8 and when I do, the video used in the movie doesn't show. I have tried at least 10 different settings and nothing has worked.

I think the best way to go it for me to convert the swf into a video file (avi, mpg, or avi) and I assume it wouldn't alter the video being used in the swf.

Screen Video V2 Bitstream Format
Hi,

Has anybody used/aware-of 'Screen Video V2 Bitstream' Coded in flv file ???
Currently I am trying to write 'encoder' for it and stuck on the usage of 'color-palette' in it.

If anybody is aware of it, please provide following information:
a. What should be the format of color-palette in side this 'V2' codec ??
Will it be B G R values in compressed form ..or something else ??
b. If colorpalette is used, then actual pixel will be represented by a single byte ( with 256 colors in colorpalette ).
Will that work in this codec ??? Corresponding SWF/FLV spec-docs say 'each pixel will get represneted
by 3 bytes in data-section'. But then how will it work when color-palette is also provided??

AS3 Multiple Video Format Include Into SWF
Hello again, all.

First, thank you, Todd, for helping with my last issue.

Secondly, I admit to an underwhelming understanding of AS3, which is why I'm posting.

I have banged my head against the wall on this for a week, now, using everything I've seen in the tutorials and the two books I've purchased.

Here's my issue...

I have successfully ported the example in the Video Basics series to my SWF. I have one new Flash file (atlantis-test-as3.fla) which should contain and play two videos:

atlantis.flv
ticker.swf

ticker.swf is from the web at http://flashfugitive.com/stuff/ticker/

Todd tipped me to the tutorials. They allowed me to use AS3 to get the flv file playing properly, thank you.

I do not understand how to "lay" the ticker.swf file over the bottom of the currently-playing flv file. I've attempted to use AS3, and I've tried importing / embedding the video into the new swf file. No dice. When I attempt to play the SWF file from within AS3, it bombs out on me with no output. It is taking its text from an XML file. I also suspect that a dynamic read of an XML file will break if I convert the SWF to another format, say MOV.

I know this is possible, and I'm sure that many of you out there on the forums can program this simple functionality in your sleep. I'm just sick of these bruises on my forehead.

I am certainly not looking for someone to write my code for me--I am going to have to support this new system, and I want to understand how to accomplish my task properly. I would gladly take any advice or watch any further tutorial on this subject, if such exist.

I am currious as far as playback and compression the best way to display video for the web. I have a client that has a video that she wants to play in a flash file over the web.
What is the best format to convert it to before making it a .swf file. Should it be Mpg, Q-time? Is the best way to load an external movie file into the stage, or embed it. I know when you try to import video the compression is sorenson. So any help would be great, thx, MINDWIRE

I'm making a sort of media player, with one section where you can listen to some various songs and another section where you can view music videos.

The questions are:

1. Whats the best method of getting the songs and videos loaded onto the animation, and the optimal settings for them?

2. Should there be sort of a limit to the number of songs & videos that I put on the animation?

What's The Best Way To Allow Users To Upload Video And Convert To FLV Format?
I have a client who want to allow users to upload video to his website.

I know Flash really well. And can create Flash video with no problems.

BUT... in this case... the problem is allowing people to upload video.
Most people won't have a clue how to create Flash video.

Whatever happens... I want all my videos to be Flash video.

I can't think of how I can allow people to upload different types of video and have this automatically converted to Flash?

When I get rich, I will buy Flash Comms server and donate this to my client (who is a charity).
This will probably solve my problems.

I've seen somewhere where someone has video on their website... which is hosted on Google.
This sounds like a good solution for me.
Has anyone used this?

Advice Needed For Unsupported Video Format
I'm trying to import an .avi file in Flash8 using the Import Video feature. The error message reads, "The source file chicken2.avi contains video in an unsupported format and cannot be encoded.".

I'd be greatful if someone could explain this process and what I can do to create or change video files to be imported into Flash 8.

I have 3 enquiries.

1) How do I embed another fla within fla.
For example, I am working on a fla, is it possible to create a link to another fla via a button?

2) How do i convert a swf file into a flv file or any other video format like avi, mp4, etc?
I am asking this because I realized when I try to import a swf into my fla file, I could only bundle it for mobile. Neither the progressive nor the streaming nor the embeding options could be checked.

3) After adding tweening motion to an animation, is it possible to add buttons to play/pause? Do I have to write a script to enable the buttons to work?
I tried adding buttons (Windows>components>video), however, the buttons were not functioning like the case when I imported a video. I think it's because adding tweening to an animation doesn't really dismiss it as a video file.

I would greatly appreaciate if anyone could post a solution to my problems.

How To Calculate Time Of Video In Format (hrs:mins:secs)

I'm using the book ActionScript 3.0 CookBook and it shows how to calculate the duration of a video (and also the current playback of the video) in seconds using the time property of the NetStream class.

So for example the length of my video is 1070 seconds.

But I want to be able to convert "1070 seconds" into a format such as "00(hours):00(mins):00(secs)", how would I go about doing that?

Anyone Developed For Large-format Screens Using Embedded Video Clips?
I'm developing a Flash piece for a large format plasma (1360x765) and will be using embedded video clips within Flash. The final video clip I'll be embedding will be delivered on 10-bit 720x486 format (standard -not widescreen).. -does anyone have experience with using video that will need to be displayed in a larger format than what it is delivered in? I'm thinking the image quality will not look good at all.. -problem is, I can't test it without purchasing the *&$ video! $$$$$$...

How To Sequentially Play/Load External Video Clips (in SWF Format) In Main Timeline?

Does anyone know how to sequentially play external SWFs loaded into the main timeline?

I have several SWF files with short videos embedded in them. I wish to load these external SWF files into my main timeline as follows:

User Presses Button -> Play Video Clip in External SWF#1 -> Once Video Clip in External SWF#1 has Finished -> Play Video Clip in External SWF#2.

I tried achieving this by adding: “var endmovie:Boolean = true;” to the end of each video clip inside the external SWF’s (e.g. “1.swf”) then cycling through an if statement in the main timeline to see when this condition was meet:

How is the best way to go about achieving this? Am I on the right track? (By the way, using .FLV files or one long external SWF file is not really an option due to long loading times...I think...)

Sorenson Squeeze
Is the version of Sorenson Squeeze (Spark codec) that is included with Flash MX of a lesser quality than that which is sold separately by Sorenson?

I know that it does not contain as many features as the stand-alone version, but does it also produce video that is of lesser quality?

So far, that has been my experience. It seems kind of stupid to include a plug-in that is almost useless because the output quality is so much poorer than that produced by the $119.00 (USD) stand-alone program.

Sorenson Question
Is there a limit to the size of file Sorenson can handle? I'm importing a 65mb mpg, it eventually encodes and displays the editing suite, but when ANY of the control buttons are pressed it runs the entire movie over and over. Any ideas?

i finally got myself a copy of sorenson squeeze 4.1 for flashmx.
boy is it sweet.
i am having a bit of a problem with the sound though. pretty much i am just compressing talking heads, which look and sound fine in their original format (.mov)
i squeeze them and the images look fine but the audio becomes very tinny and the people sound like they are lisping.
this is weird because when squeezing i have "uncompressed sound" applied to the vids.
anyone know what the dealio is?

Sorenson Squeeze Help
I have a video that is 30 seconds long containing audio. When I squeeze it in Sorenson the .flv file turns out to be 30.7 seconds long when imported into my .fla. The audio stops before the video ends (no longer in sync with video). I set the Frame Rate in Sorenson at "1:1 Frames/Sec." and my .fla is set at 24/fps. Is there a solution to this problem with the audio???
I've already edited the audio by adding extra sound and have it on a seperate sound layer with the video with no sound and it works, but I would prefer to keep the audio IN the video.

FLV: Sorenson Metadata Bug
Hi,

Some years ago, we encoded a couple of .flv's with the Sorenson pack. Unfortunately, the Sorenson pack contained one major bug, being that the injected metadata got screwed up: the width and height properties would both be set to the value of width, resulting in a square flv.
As most flv players - including mine - rely on the metadata to scale the video, this is a big one. I heard of a workaround that doesn't use metadata, but I didn't find any satisfying results.

Anyone have any experience with these kind of situations?
