Super Quick Embedded Fonts Question...

If you embed a font in a movie (i.e. create a font symbol in the library) can you use that font for static text, or do you still need to use a dynamic text box?

Why Do Embedded Fonts Blur When Non-embedded Fonts Dont?
If someone could offer a suggestion here I'd be much obliged. I'm trying to build a web site using pixel fonts but since very few people have this particular font, I'm trying to embed the font. The problem is that when I don't embed it looks perfectly sharp, but as soon as I embed it blurs them (as if it tries to anti-alias a pixel font.. which I don't want it to do)... any ideas?

Problem With Super Pixel Fonts
hello.

I am a newbie to the forums (and flash) and I am having a problem using the super pixel fonts. I bought the corporate font from the partner font site and I read your tutorial on using the super fonts, but I still cant get it to work. I have attached the .fla file and I kept the X and Y coordinates as whole numbers but some of the buttons are working and some are not. You can also view what I am talking about at:

This is the first time I have used flash and I am having fun with it thanks to the great tutorials. I just want to get the text on these buttons looking nice and clean. Thanks!

Super Pixel Fonts - Dynamic Text Field
Hi, I am loading text from an external text document and using html tags. The problem is the text I'm loading is really a list of links. The first line looks great and the second line and there after look blurry. I know this is due to the pixel fonts I'm using. Does anyone know how to correct this problem? I am using fonts for flash super pixel fonts and they need to land on exact pixels. My guess is that the <br> and <p> tags aren't specifying that it has to go to and exact pixel. Please help.

Thanks!!!

Why Super Pixel Fonts Dont Works On My Movies?
Hi there!

Ok, Super Pixel Fonts are cool, but I cant make it work on my projects.

I am using Corel Font Navigator, then I drag the Harmony font that I downloaded from FFF website. Then I type some text in a dynamic text box, adjusted the text box to not decimal x and y positions and stroke CONTROL-ENTER. Cool! Crisp and legible text!

Then I close Flash, go back to Font Navigator and remove font. Well, I think that font still should stay on my movie, but when I test the SWF the are not there anymore (my text is real ugly!).

Well, I tried to embed all chars, but when I do that, the fonts gets blurry like any regular font.

What's the trick to make it work nice????

Thanks!

Device Fonts Vs. Embedded Fonts
Hi there!

I have a little X-File I'm trying to figure out here. Any hints would be appreciated.

I have six SWFs. All of them have the same exact design. However, each of them has a different amount of text using an embedded font. The first one has about 3,500 characters (with spaces). The second one has aproximately 6,000 characters (with spaces). The third one has 14,000 characters, more or less.

The fourth SWF is just the first one, but using a device font instead. The fifth one is the second SWF with a device font, and the same goes for the sixth one.

All six SFWs can be scrolled down.

I've taken times. I've measured the time taken to scroll down the entire text in each SWF. All tests have been run down under Windows XP and with version 9 of Flash Player, and a 'high' value of the quality parameter.

I have read in the Flash documentation that device fonts are managed faster by Flash Player, as they don't use any anti-alias settings and its renderization lays down on the OS' font technology. Let me introduce the results:

First SWF (deviced one) has taken an average time of 0 min 59 s, 71
Fourth SWF (embedded one) has taken an average time of 1 min 12 s, 04

As guessed, it seems that device fonts are a little bit lighter than embedded fonts.

Second SWF (deviced one) has taken an average time of 1 min 36 s, 04
Fifth SWF (embedded one) has taken an average time of 1 min 52 s, 64

In this set of tests, we can appreciate a similar behaviour. But, pay attention...

Third SWF (deviced one) has taken an average time of 5 min 50 s, 81
Sixth SWF (embedded one) has taken an average time of 3 min 52 s, 60

Funny, isn't it? This set of tests just drives me nuts. One would think that results may be swapped, but, no matter how many times I try it, it always goes the same way.

Has anyone observed this behaviour before? Is there any known bottleneck in the underlying Windows Font Technology? Does it make any sense at all?

Thanks in advance!

Embedded Fonts Vs Non Embedded
I am in the process of learning flash inside and out. During the testing phase of my design site I noticed that some of the text appeared very thin and hardly legible while other text was bold and vibrant. I checked the settings of the fonts to see if it was a Bold character setting issue but the fonts that were vibrant and thick had no Bold character setting at all. After many hours of comparing the different text boxes on the screen I realized that some of the text box had the embed font option on. This makes text less vibrant. Atleast it did with the particular font I used. Is it possible to cut down on memory while embedding the fonts and still have vibrant looking text? Try making several white text boxes on a black background with some of them being embedded and others not and you will see what I mean.

Best Regards,
Sam

P.S. THIS FREAKIN SITE ROCKS!

I have a font that is not in my standard which I've loaded into my fonts folder and would like to embed in Flash but can't quite quite. I am using Actionscript to fill a dynmic text box:

info.text = _root.myText;
info.border = false;
infoFormat = new TextFormat();
infoFormat.font = _root.myVariable;
infoFormat.embedFonts = true;
info.setTextFormat(infoFormat);

When I test the movie on my machine, the fonts show. When I test it on another, they do not. Did I miss a step? thanks in advance.

CSS And Embedded Fonts
I have set up a style sheet and it seems to work appart from the bold tag.

Code:
//style sheet object
var SS = new TextField.StyleSheet();
//path to style sheet
var cssURL = "mss.css";
exText = "<p class='headline'>Create a headline text</p>";
exText += "<p><span class='headline2'> Create next heading heading2</span>"+"
";
exText += "Some other text goes here for testing"+"
";
exText += "And again more text here just to see if it works</p>"+"
";
SS.load(cssURL);
SS.onLoad = function(success) {
if (success) {
myText.styleSheet = SS;
myText.html = true;
myText.setStyle("embedFonts", true);
myText.htmlText = exText;
}
};

StyleSheet code

Code:
p {
color: #000000;
font-size: 8px;
}

.headline {
color: #0000FF;
font-size: 8px;
}

.headline2 {
color: #666600;
font-weight:bold;
}
I made my text file embed and use html.
I left out the font family in the style sheet because it didn’t work at all when I try to use a font family that wasn't Arial or verdana.
I'm using FFF business font.

I also set up another dynamic text field off the stage and set that font to FFF business Bold
But for some reason it still will not recognize the bold font.
What is up with this?
Any help please

CSS And Embedded Fonts
Soo...using AS3 I'd like to use an external CSS file to set up fonts.
However, it seems that the best way to get the clearest readable font is to use embedded fonts. Since I can't use the [embed] tag - I have to embed the font into the FLA/SWF file. Now I've found the work around for using Library fonts.

(working with an embedded font / calling it up as a class)
var format:TextFormat= new TextFormat();
format.font = new Verdana_sub().fontName;//verdana_sub is the font name
tb.defaultTextFormat = format;

However - even if I name the font family correctly in the CSS file - it leaves the textbox blank when I turn on embeddedfonts. And- the method above throws an error because you can't set a textformat to a textfield file with stylesheet. And you can't assign a "font name" to a style sheet.

I really didn't want to have to make a choice between either using CSS or using embedded fonts. Is there code to make an embedded font work with a CSS file?

Thanks in advance.

Embedded Fonts
Hi,

The new piece I'm building uses 2 specific fonts from the client. In order to ensure they display properly, I have created new Font objects in the library, then load them as classes in my AS file. This is an example of what I'm doing:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/qu...bedding_fonts/

But, not only are there 2 fonts, I also need to use Bold for both of them and Bold Italic for one, which makes a total of 5 embedded fonts. Not surprisingly, my file size has ballooned. So my question is, is this the best (most efficient) way to ensure the fonts display correctly on client browsers?

Thanks!

Embedded Fonts In CS3
Hi!

Since Flash8, i use a share library with embed fonts. These fonts (Century Gothic, MS UI Gothic, SimHei and Avant Garde) are used in a multi language training application showing 218 swf files.
All my dynamic and imput textfields use these fonts as embedded font.
These 4 fonts are duplicate in 4 "embedded fonts version" to cover regular, bold, italic and bold italic mode.

So, i've 16 fonts in my share library as this method. for example :
Font name with regular mode -> Font_Name__Normal
Font name with bold mode -> Font_Name__Bold
Font name with italicmode -> Font_Name__Italic
Font name with bold and italic mode -> Font_Name__Bold_Italic

Thanks to this method, i can set a font to my textfield according to the user language mode. For exemple Century Gothic is set for English users, MS UI Gothic for Japanese users and SimHei for Chinese users.

I would like to migrate this Flash8 application to Flash CS3. So i open my library, rigth click and select new font. Next, select linkage and check "Export for runtime sharing".

At this moment, a class name and a base class are set bu Flash CS3. I just write the URL like that "./fla_name.swf" and press ok button.

A warning messagebox tells me "A definition for this class could not be found in the classpath, so one will be automatically generated in the swf file upon export."

As i don't know what type of class i need to create (i just start AS3, never used it before), I accept and export my flash file.

The Flash CS3 swf size is 18KB and the Flash 8 swf size is 38MB. I conclude that my fonts are not embedded in my file.

To conclude, how to do it with Flash CS3 ?

thanks for your help

I am reading xml (unicode) file with various languages (english, korean,
japanese, trad chinese) into dynamic actionscript created text fields. Works
perfectly on machine with fonts installed (Arial, Batang, MS Mincho,
SimSun). However does not work on machine without these fonts installed.

I have attempted to embed the fonts (eg embed Batang as myBatang) and use
embedFonts = true, and format the textfield with a textFormat .font =
"myBatang".

This does not work, so I am guessing that you can't embed Asian fonts and
they have to be installed on the system.

Any clues/ideas...

ok, i have an embedded font.

i have a dynamic textfield displaying a blog.

firstly i didnt embed the font, and when rendered on a machine with the font, italic & underlined html rendered text comes out fine.

when viewed on another machine, it subs times new roman, but the underline & italic is still fine.

then i embed "all characters", and after that, on either machine, underline & italic html text fails.

what the hell is it with flash & font embedding. once i turn off italic & underlined, it works, but when you display italic & underline dynamic text ON A MACHINE WITH THE FONT INSTALLED it seems to go ok. it's not proper font embedding is it....

Embedded Fonts With CSS
Hello all,

I have a embedded font that the client user hopefully doesn't need to have to be able to view my text. Also I have an imported CSS sheet to set the size, colour, and style of this typeface and thus end text. However, apart from everything working great when I remove the same typeface being embedded but remove it from the local machine the typeface in the flash app reverts back to a dodgy unreadable one. So it looks like the client user needs the font.

Is there anything I can do to use CSS and still have the embedded font - that doesn't have to be on the clients machine??

I can only have a textField and not a custom component and I can post code is need be.

many thanks, amp3

I have this bizarre embedded font issue I can't figure out.

I've run a size report on my movie, and apparently there is an embedded font that's taking up 7 megs of space. My .fla isn't even 4 megs. Prior to it mysteriously sneaking into my movie, the .swf published at 400k. Now it's almost 8 megs. I've searched my movie for hours checking each textfield, but even when I choose "Don't Embed" on all of my fields, the gigantic font is still somewhere in my movie.

It seems to be that this embedded font includes every character (mostly asian characters)... Am I missing something somewhere??

My movie loads 2 external movies, but they shouldn't have any bearing on the main movie's filesize, right?

I can't attach the movie b/c it exceeds the max size for this site, so I linked the .fla here:

format.font = "Arial";
format.color = 0xFF0000;
format.size = 14;
format.bold = true;

rgbTabText = new TextField();
rgbTabText.defaultTextFormat = format;
rgbTabText.embedFonts = true;
rgbTabText.text = "rgb";
//rgbTabText.rotation = 90;
addChild(rgbTabText);
In the documentation it says that

Quote:

If you set the embedFonts property to true for a text field, you must specify a font for that text by using the font property of a TextFormat object applied to the text field.

Aren't I doing that?

CSS + Embedded Fonts
Hi, I am having a problem with a embedded font.

I am loading text from a XML, and applying a CSS stylesheet to the textfield that renders it. The font I am trying to use is "standard 07_53". This is the code I have:

ActionScript Code:
public function mostrarNoticia($modelo:NoticiaModel):void {    titulo_txt.text = $modelo.titulo;    fecha_txt.text = $modelo.fecha;     var style:StyleSheet = new StyleSheet();    var p:Object = new Object();    p.fontSize = 8;    p.fontFamily = new StandardFont().fontName;    style.setStyle("p", p);    texto_txt.styleSheet = style;    texto_txt.htmlText = $modelo.texto.replace("@imagen@", $modelo.imagen);}

The problem is that new StandardFont().fontName doesn't return "standard 07_53", it also adds to the size and format of the font, and it shows Times New Roman instead.

Any way of embedding the font properly?

Has anyone experienced this phenomenon with embedded text library assets?

I have a Font symbol in my library set to a font of my choosing. We'll say Arial
Linkage identifier named "myArial"

Is it true that once you specify a font in the Library assets for a TextField, that some of actionscript properties for TextFormat become null?

Code:
var my_fmt:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
my_fmt.bold = true;
my_fmt.font = "myArial";
my_fmt.color = Math.random()*0xffffff;
my_fmt.size = 30;

this.createTextField("my_txt", this.getNextHighestDepth(), Stage.width*0.5, Stage.height*0.5, 500, 200);
my_txt.selectable = false;
my_txt.embedFonts = true;
my_txt.text = "Hello world";
my_txt.setTextFormat(my_fmt);

Ok, I'm working with quite a few dynamic text boxes that have html applied to them at runtime and have their stylesheet property set. The thing is, some of them need to run an alpha tween. The only way to do this is to make sure the font is embedded (so it seems). The problem is, when I do this, the html doesn't seem to work. Basically I'm trying to combine these things... dynamic text box (htmlText + styleSheet) + embedded fonts + <a> tag with asfunction in it.

Anyone have any ideas?

Embedded Fonts
Hi,

I'm puzzled by the font settings in Flash. A font can be
embedded in the library and an onstage text field can be
assigned the font in the library. Neither the .fla or .swf
seem to increase in file size though if the onstage text field
is assigned the library font.

However, if the embed characters button is used in the
properties box and character sets are selected, then the
file size goes up because the character sets selected
are being embedded.

The embed characters button seems to work like expected
since the file size increases. However, embedding a font
in the library and assigning the text field the library
font does not seem to make the file size increase. It
doesnt look like the library font is embedded in the swf.

Why then have the option to embed characters button and
also embed font in library? It seems embed characters button
should embed only a subset of the font chosen and embed
font in library should embed the entire font, but the
embed font in library does not seem to increase file size
so it does not seem like anything is embedded.

Can someone explain what is happening?

Thanks!

i use the font 'impact' throughout my flash site. i looked in the help to find out about embedding fonts, but apparently you dont have to embed teh font. help says that if you go to view>antialias text and teh font looks smooth, then flash will automatically embed the fonts details. so i dont need to worry about explicitly embedding the font? a bit of a crap question but i just wanted to check.

Hi all.

I need to create textFields dynamically and using a font i've linked in the library.
After taking a look at flash docs, i got this:
Code:

var _textfmt1:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
_textfmt1.font = "HelveticaNLC";
_textfmt1.color = 0x00A6D6;

var tempText:TextField = this.createTextField("titulo",this.getNextHighestDepth(),0,0,65.0,28);
tempText.setTextFormat(_textfmt1);
tempText.embedFonts = true;
tempText.text = "text example";

The textfield is created, but i don't see anything.
Can someone show me the way?

Edit: Also, how do i choose the characters map to embed?

Html And Embedded Fonts
I have two questions about embedded fonts.

(1) is it possible to have an embedded font appear without antialiasing? and (2), I noticed that when I use the bold tag with an embedded font in an html-enabled text field, it does not appear bold even if I have the bold version embedded. Is it possible to make the bold tag work with an embedded font? Thanks!

Embedded Fonts Problems?
hi,

i have a rather large (3000px x 500px) flash movie with everything but the kitchen sink. i've been working on it and kind of worried that it would overtax my browser... there are 10 birds flying around, a drawing tool, 2 mp3s playing, a marquee, a weblog, and a zoomify gallery. all potentially running at the same time, if you can find where to click.

there is a scrolling marquee, and it worked fine, till i remembered that i had forgotten to embed the font. when i embedded the font, (digital dream, an LED-style font), it causes the whole movie to freeze up and there is a mess of characters where the marquee should be.

please check it out if you want!

can anyone tell me what causes some fonts to not embed? or is it an issue not of the font failing but the memory required being too much? because i know that when i embedded the font, the file size of the marquee swf went from 300bytes to 5K.

my machine only has 128meg of ram. maybe that's it? can someone shed some light?

thanks
frizzo

Removing Embedded Fonts
I have a file with embedded fonts that I want to remove except I can't find where they're embedded. I've gone through all the text. Is there an easy way to find where fonts are embedded? Thanks for your help!

Shared Embedded Fonts
Hi all,

I am facing problems when I try to change embedded fonts dynamically for a text field. Say, if there are 3 types of embedded fonts shared in a separate file and I have access to them, by having them linked, by setting its "import for runtime sharing" option in the destination movie.

This works OK if they are applied to text already displayed on stage. Supposing I try to change the font ( embedded ) at runtime to another font type for a text field, it does not work.. I need to have this implemented as I cannot have all the 3 types of fonts embedded in every movie that I use..

Please help..( I am using MX 2004 Prof. updated 7.2 )

Thanks,
RamFlash
