Opening Saved Games
okay, heres the problem:
I'm making a game called Pyramid, its a puzzle game, sorta like MYST, only its inside a pyramid, obviously. It will be downloaded by people and installed on their machines. So, I have the main interfaces and stuff done, like the main screen, an options screen, and intro movie to the thing etc... But I want to make a save and recall game function, this is where the problem begins, I have the saving part working, but I want FLASH to show a list of all the saved games in a particular folder caled "saved games" (created when the user installs the game) when they click on an open gme button. I'm I teacher and an almost-newbie who has Flash Pro 8 installed with Fireworks available. I've wanted to learn to use Flash for hobby and school purposes (I teach science - and animations are far better than using a blackboard and waving my arms about.) I've been looking for a suitable project learn to create a full animation with. I've got the perfect project now: I've been nominated for a teacher award and I have to submit a 1 minute video on DVD at a gala awards ceremony in front of my professional peers and potential employers! I've got a fortnight to do this in. I'll outline my ideas and I'd really appreciate some specific advice on the questions afterwards to help me avoid getting into blind alleys that will waste time or bad set-ups that will not scale up or be able to export to DVD.
It will take the form of a story with a mix of animation and embedded photos.
We have Audacity and a mixing desk and a musics teacher who can make up the music. Otherwise, what's a good 'paid-for' or 'creative commons' source of music to go along with a narration.
The first 15 seconds will be simple tweened characters with objects getting closer and further away, rotating and moving.
There will also be a couple of symbols that will be animated in a traditional way (as I don't know how to tween them!): a person flailing and falling, and a Bugs Bunny type tunnel running along the ground.
I'd love a 'cartoon' rotating Earth to put in here, is there a site with (again paid or free) flash objects that can be downloaded?
I'd also like to use a scanned bitmap texture to form a character's shirt.
The next 15 seconds will be a close up of a slate or tablet PC held by a character (me) with pictures or videos and captions
The next 15 seconds will be a panorama of drawn buildings where each building in turn will be zoomed into and the walls become transparent to show a photo of good teaching inside.
The next 15 seconds will be multiple instances of tweened symbols (juggling figures)
The next 15 seconds will be some kind of conclusion.
That comes to 75 seconds, but I assume I'm going to be editing down to get the pace right.
OK here are the questions:
This is to be projected on a big screen from a standard DVD player. What size of stage should I have? What size of canvas do I need for my characters?
What tool do I need to get a completed flash movie with embedded pictures and video onto a standard DVD player (with no embedded logo)?
What resolution or size do I need to import the pictures at to look good on a big screen?
Should I design my characters, buildings and backgrounds in Flash or Fireworks? I need to learn either - I'm concentrating on pen tool and fills.
What sound format should we record a narration in?
What sound format should we record the music in?
If I have to download music, what format should it be in?
The only videos I would use are Quicktime and AVI. Would either be OK to embed and rotate etc? Does standard Flash 8 allow this?
Should I be making movie clips or using the flash timeline?
Should I animate my falling man in Fireworks frame-by-frame or in Flash.
That's heaps I guess to ask of anyone, but all expert advice would be gratefully received.

i am really new at this and i don't know much about this but i like it and so far it has been fun working with flash. i am in the process of creating my first game. at the moment, it has my character and the ability to jump from platform to platform. what i want to add to it are multiple enemies that can jump around on the platforms also and i want to be able to attack them.
i have searched the tutorial section and so far i have found nothing that can help me.
if anyone is willing to help me even in the slightest, i would be greatly obliged.
EDIT: i have encountered another problem. i added a scrolling background too my game but when the character walks on the background platforms and the floor, it slowly starts to sink in to them and below them until it falls through them completely.

[MX] HP Bar And Attacks Question (total Newbie)
Well as the title suggests I am a newbie. I have an OK knowledge of actionscript, a good knowledge of the program itself, but I still need some help. I am currently making a turn-based combat game and I need to have two persistent HP bars. One of the player and one for the enemy. I want to be able to put a code in on a certain frame of the animation that basically says. "Knock the enemy HP bar down X points." or the player's bar, depending on who is attacking. Of course the bar would have to stay there throughout the whole fight.
If someone could help me I would be most grateful.
I know it has something to do with variables or something...not sure, like I said, newbie.
Developing A Sidescroller Type Game And Working On Attacks
I'm developing my first game in Flash, I've been using flash for a while so I'm very used to the controls. I have no problem figuring out most of the actionscripting (I'm decent with C++/C# .NET) I've been able to get pretty much what I want out of what I've read on line as far as tutorials though. I've been searching the Google and a couple other sites for an answer to a big problem.

My Problem is key presses. I want to be able to press a key (Q) and activate a "punch" then press the key again and activate a second different "punch" like a combo move. I've been toying around with my logic and haven't been able to figure this problem out. Specifically I want to press (Q) to attack "once" and play the whole animation once. Currently when I press (Q) to attack, and hold the key down it will repeat the "attack" animation over and over. I don't want the animation to repeat until I release the key, and press again. Edit: "I have 2 punches and 2 kicks (seperate animations/movie clips) they are supposed to work together in a 2 key press combo such as: Q,Q = punch,jab or W,Q = kick,jab and so on..."

I was thinking maybe a keylistener function would help, but I don't see how that would accomplish what I need without loads of coding, of course if thats the only way then I guess I'll be spending lots of time focusing on it, but if I can avoid it I will.

I'm looking at purchasing an HP DL380 ProLiant machine with 2x Intel Quad Core Xeon 3.0Ghz Chips. I would most likely be running Windows Server 2008 on it.
I know that Flash Media Server requires the Win 2008 Server environment but will I have a problem running Flash CS3 / Dreamweaver CS3 and other CS3 - CS4 applications from Adobe on this environment?
Forgive my ignorance, but I've been using OS X for a while for my Adobe development but I would like to take advantage of the two Quad Core Intel Xeon processors on the new machine.

I need to make a desktop application for a client and because I already know some AS and Flex I thought of doing it in AIR. But now I read on the runtime download site that it has a build in timeout:

Media Server And 2003/2008 64Bit
Hello We are about to do a big investment into the media server and the hardware to run it all.
I am looking at some quad core xeon servers with 8gig of ram. In order to get use of more than 4gig or ram you need to run a 64bit os. I would like to run server 2008 in 64bit but the specs say server 2003 32bit.
Can flash media server run in 2008 ? or even 2003 64bit.
It seems a little crazy if it doesnt. surly people would want to run the server with more than 4gig ram including the improved performance of 64bit.
Flash Runtime Sharing Challenge 2008
Hi everyone!
So I've been looking more into the "Import/Export for runtime sharing" of flash, and have run into some frustrating behavior. The problem I'm running into is that Flash's management of swf paths is confusing, and there is not a lot of documentation as to how the engine links files together.
First some background; forgive me if it's verbose, I just want to make sure I supply enough information for this complex scenario.
Basically, I'm trying to make a simple 2D fighting game like Street Fighter, so I'll use a character... Let's say... Ryu(cause he's the coolest!)
I'm using external linking to try and reduce the sizes of the swfs from the FX in the game w/o having to create a complex dummy system. I've got most of the research completed, the final hitch that I've encountered is how Flash CS3 handles the linkage setup. Here's the setup I have with Ryu:

/game/rsrc/fx/ImpactFX.fla
/game/rsrc/fx/ImpactFX.swf
/game/bin-debug/Game.swf
So ImpactFX is the VFX that will be used in all character's animations. It's a dust cloud that appears when ryu hits the ground.
Ryu's Impact file references ImpactFX's library. There will probably be others like WallImpact, etc.
Game is the main game.
So if I have 200 Impact animations with Ryu, w/o using runtime sharing, I have to take the size hit, roughly 200 * sizeof(ImpactFX.swf), since the assets are burnt into each individual Impact animation's swf. With runtime sharing, I only have to download ImpactFX.swf, so I get major savings over that VFX. Right?
I've been able to get runtime sharing to work in specific instances, but not in a general system.
So the first thing I did:
I setup the shared symbols in ImpactFX.fla to 'Export for runtime sharing'. I used the default symbol names, and used the URL 'ImpactFX.swf.'
Dragged the folder that contained the shared symbols from ImpactFX.fla to Impact.fla. This setup all the symbol's correctly.
Added them to my scene and ran(Impact.swf). No dice! I got this error:
Error opening URL 'file:///H|/flash/game/rsrc/characters/ryu/flash/ImpactFX.swf'
From this, I ascertained that Impact.swf was looking for ImpactFX.swf in the same directory as it.
As a quick test I copied the ImpactFX.swf to the same directory as Impact.swf. Re-ran, and success! The swf savings are there, but it's not ideal at all, I have to copy the swfs to the same directory???
From there I changed the linkage up a bit. From the library in Impact.fla, I changed the Import URL to ../../../fx/ImpactFX.swf. Still success! But... Some more weirdness here, I only changed it on one symbol, and during runtime it worked for all symbols... Even though the other symbols still point to just ImpactFX.swf...
So this works fine when I run and test the animation from the fla. However, when I try to run it from the Game.swf, DISASTER! This one was even more frustrating; the flash player doesn't seem to give the previous error message(even though it's the same issue.) I traced this problem down before and found that the Impact.swf would never return a 'loaded' event. Not cool. Of course, copying the ImpactFX.swf to the appropriate path fixes this and it runs beautifully.
So where does that leave me? There's a way to get this to work, but it's not pretty at all, especially for artists. The ideal setup I would like to have the artist working is:
1. Open the FX library fla, pin the library, and drag drop the appropriate symbols for the animation.
2. Save and export.
3. Run and confirm in the fla's test frame work.
4. Run and confirm in the game.
Unfortunately, with all the swf location copying and pathing this adds too much complexity for an art pipeline.
So that's my dilemma. The main question I am trying to figure out now is, what's the best pipeline solution for this scenario? I want to be able to runtime share these files with multiple shell programs. A solution is forming, but I don't think it's the best.
It seems like when you setup a symbol to 'export for run-time sharing', the URL defines the path the parent importing swf uses to find the runtime resources, which seems a little backwards...
I tried loading ImpactFX.swf before Impact.swf. That didn't work, even though they are in the same security sandbox.
Other questions:
1. Is there a way to make loading swfs throw that 'Error opening URL' error?
2. Is there a way to say 'hey flash player, the file you are looking to link is over here!'
3. Or even better, 'hey load these runtime assets before you load the assets that reference them!'
4. Is this necessary? I'm assuming this is a required savings, because if we have a lot of animations with FX, we're going to want to cut down on our download size. Figuring out this pipeline may also allow us to load one large library file for the game animations, and just load that.
5. Does the security sandbox system have anything to do with this.
Any thoughts or ideas? Feel free to point me towards documentation, I haven't had much luck finding any detailed documentation for this topic.

I have searched the web for this solution, and have found many different actionscripts, but none that do exactly what I need it to. So I now, come to you guys for help.
I have a timeline that runs for 480 frames, which starts at the year 1900 and stops at 2008. There is also a scrubber, so the user can drag and drop anywhere they want along that timeline. Also, during the animation, the scrubber pauses on particular years, loads an external SWF and then continues when it's done.
Now, without having to actually type out 108 years on separate text field, which wouldn't add up evenly anyway since it's over 480 frames, I was wondering the following:
Does anyone know how to create a dynamic text field, that will count from 1900 at the start of the timeline, and count up to 2008 by the end of the timeline. And to take into account that there are pauses, and a draggable scrubber?

Flash 8 And Visual Basic 2008 Express Integration

I've been working on a program and need some updated information about working with Flash 8 and Visual Basic Express 2008
From my research it seems that I need to set a script access parameter, probably from VB. So I'm wondering how to do that.
Secondly, some of the intel out there hints that the FSCommand is no longer the suggested way to go, So I need to get confirmation on the correct way to call a an swf file and get it to run again.
I currently have an xml database that, when updated, needs to trigger my flash program to re-display the data.
Everything works fine the first time through, but the updated xml file is not being processed.
I'd like to have Visual Basic just "tell" flash (with a parameter or a call) the xml file has been updated and then get flash to redisplay based on the new information.
Your advice would be appreciated.

Custom headers provided by ActionScript now require explicit permission from a cross-domain policy file in order for the request to be sent to another domain (yikes)
ALL socket connections (even same-domain) require socket-based policy files to successfully maintain a connection (yowza!)

Flash Player team is doing some 'pre-communication' around the security changes in the -next- version of Flash Player, releasing in April 2008.

Unable To Open Flash 2008 File In Flash MX 2004
I was working on a file in Flash 2008 and saved it as a regular .fla. I sent the file to myself via email and downloaded it on a different PC to continue working on it. The other PC has Flash MX 2004 installed. When I try to open the file with MX however, I just get:
"Error. Unexpected file format."
Both versions of the application save files as .fla, so this format should be valid... is there any way to open this file?

[MX04] "Error Opening URL" During Preview On Flash (not Just Opening Swf).
When I preview a movie by pressing command+return (Mac) on a few particular .fla files, it gives me a "Error Opening URL" message.

The files are in the same folder, I didn't move them at all. It happened the very first time I created a preview/SWF file by hitting command+return and it kept doing that whenever I wanted to preview my file. So I had to go in and just open the SWF file itself each time I hit "command+return". Why does it do that? Is it because the path is way too long? Does Flash have issues with really long paths or is this a glitch? I'm trying to figure out why this happens because it ALSO happens on a separate project (that's 3-4 folders in depth) at certain points of the project.
I try to go back to the very first main page from a swf file that's 2 folders above it even though if I just open the main root file (index.swf or whatever), it opens a swf file that's a folder above it just fine (/anotherfolder/file.swf). That file has no issues going forward another folder (/anotherfolder/anotherfolder2/file.swf) It has no problems going backwards to the very first index page from that point on (../../index.swf). With that said, after going back 2-3 folders to open the index page. The index page can no longer go FORWARD again, for some odd reason, but the pathways are correct and they work perfectly fine if I started viewing the swf project from the very beginning and go forward from there.
Perhaps I should just copy and paste everything from the defective file and onto a new file, would that help? I'm trying to narrow what this problem may be to see if these two separate projects have any issues that are related in any way shape or form. This has been buggin' the hell out of me for the past 3 weeks!

Hi. I am working on a beat em up in college. 2 things r annoying me.
1-Jumping. How can i get the user controled character to jump up then come back down?? Also whilst in the air be able to kick, and be able to do a flip if u jump and move right or left?
2-Walking. How do i get a smooth walking animation. I have i so when u press right it iwll move right in a smoth animation, but when u hold it in to move a distance the guy just glides. How do i rectify this??
