URGENT: Font Troubles...how Can I Make Flash See My Fonts?
Hi! I have an urgent video problem for a client. It is a series of animations, and I need to do some editing, in FCP. First i need to export the animations from flash....with a large amount of animated writing.The problem is that I have downloaded and installed the fonts needed (Simpsonfont, Ren & Stimpy, Comic Commando)...but flash refuses to see them! They are in User and System font directory, and they work with all my CS2 apps. My question is how can i make flash see them?. This is a real problem for me! If anyone could help I would be most obliged...running flash 8 pro on OS X.

Adding New Fonts To Flash Font Library
I have a whole bunch of really cool fonts that I have downloaded over time. How do I add them to flash mx so I can access them while I am creating new flash stuff?
Font Bug In Flash...fonts Reverting To System Default
Maybe I am doing something stupid...you never know.
I typically use a shared lib to embed, then link fonts. I have SEVERAL flash files that have suddenly started to do this. Fonts that ARE embedded and ARE linked to shared lib swf...suddenly stop working and I get a font in parenthesis (which I named and embedded) with 'System Default" Even when I re-embed and TRY to re-select the new font, it keeps reverting the the bad system default.
If I open a NEW text box it will let me use the RE-embeded font. If I try to change the font that won't release it self from the "system default" version...it will let me...
But all the fonts that are in the file already have suddenly changed themselves. I was cutting and pasting buttons into other files using the same linkages, and everytime I pasted the button into a new file, the font automatically changed itself the the system default.
I tried everything I know. I turned on the preferences to warn me if a font is missing...and cutting and pasting these buttons into a new file (that somehow won't recognize the correct font)...THE WARNING is not triggered...though the font will turn into a system font...
I am at a loss..and there is NO WAY to repair this in my files without re-creating them all over again fonts., which is quite impossible.
Font Troubles
Alright, when I make a movie, the fonts I use show up fine on my computer (obviously), but on some other computers, they show up usually as times new roman...is there anyway to keep this from happening?
I Hate Fonts - All Font Variations Not Showing In Flash Menu
Hi folks
This same subject has infuriated me for ages, but ive managed to 'muddle' through.
In our company all the visual designers use Macs and pepper the designs with font light dark italic you name it they use it if they can. Whilst all the authors/coders/developers are on PC.
However when importing the the font onto my PC for flash development some strange things happen and always have.
I am no expert on fonts never have been, never profess to be and never want to be - so please excuse my ignorance.
1 the fonts dont show in flash - can anyone tell me why this is
e.g. i have installed DIN light, dark and regular yet in flash only DIN displays yet it asks for the others
2 when i check in the windows fonts the DIN fonts imported although showing up as true type have one of two file icons
(i) like an italic green O
(ii) two T's overlaid one blue one green
Could this be the route of my problem.
Can i resolve this in flash and how as it is driving me up the wall.
And no clever answers about Macs and PCs please both have their uses.
Thanks
J
Embedded Font Troubles
In general, I got embedded fonts to work!
I embed them in an empty movie and set the link to export. Then in the destination movie I link to that font in that movie.
I tested it on 6 fonts, 2 are Arial and Verdana and 4 unique.
The 4 unique fonts work great on a machine that doesn't have them installed!! Woohoo!
However...Arial and Verdana don't show up. And it seems the common thread is that because the computer viewing the movie has those fonts installed.
Has anyone heard of this before? Is this a common pitfall that has a simple fix?
In the source movie I have all 3 export options selected. And I know I must have the linkage right, otherwise the 4 unique fonts wouldn't be working, right?
Thanks for any advice!

Embedded Font Troubles
I am using a dynamic text box, with html formatting. I am embedding my font in the movie.
The problem I am getting, is when the bold html tag is applied to a portion of the text, that portion is not visible. The html is working because the break tags are working, just not the text formatting like BOLD Italics, etc.
The font I am using is Arial, which I believe has BOLD and Italic. I also tried Times New Roman, with this font, I got some of the characters showing up BOLD, but others not visible.
Has anyone run into an issue with Flash not properly embedding the fonts? Any thoughts?
Thanks.

Font Troubles... Need Them To Come Off Server Not Client..
I have a program in which the user can type in whatever they want, hit Submit, and then they can change the font of it.
However, there are many unique fonts that many user's don't have, and I'm using a
.setStyle("fontFamily", theSelectedItemLabel);
To choose them. Is there a way I can pull the fonts off the actual SERVER the .swf is hosted on, instead of it coming from each individuals computer?

How Do You Make Sure That Fonts Are Embeded In Flash MX?
hello
where (if any) is the tag which ensures the font is embeded in the text properties?
reason for this question is....
when i created my movie, i used some pixel fonts from 'minifonts.com'.... I have read all the info which came with them and have adhered to all the specs required.
(ie. dynamic text, no kerning, use only 12 pixels for the font, set movie to pixels, etc..)
And when published on my Mac at home it looked great... however, i have just tested it on a Windows 2000 machine, and opened it in both internet explorer and flashplayer, the font has completeley changed to the system default..
can anyone help? as i dont want my site to look as if it uses times roman!! Arghhhh!!

Can I Share Fonts With Those Who Don't Have That Font?
My question is about cross-platform development, not cross-platform viewing.
We have a base swf file that loads several external swf files.
We have developers and designers on Mac and on Windows.
Is there a way to embed a font in the base file and share that font with an swf that was published on a machine that doesn't have that font installed?
Shared library requires that the font is installed on all machines that publish the swf's. This isn't possible in our situation.
AS3: How To Get Device Fonts From A *.ttf Font?
Hiya,
There are a few examples out there on how to embed fonts into your AS3 file, like here. This ensures that the user get teh correct font.
However, (like i ask in the post in the link), i can only get this to work with aliased fonts. I need device-fonts, and after alot of testing, i still cant figure out how i can do that.

Why Are Some Fonts Not Available In Font List?
Hi All,
I have a font-problem which bothered me for quite a while.
Somehow Flash doesn't display all systemfonts in the flash font list.
For example: I have a font in my window-font-directory named Bell Gothic. There are 3 files for Bell Gothic: Bell Gothic Bold, Bell Gothic light and Bell Gothic Black. All 3 files are truetype font files.
Now here's the problem: Somehow flash only displays 1 Bell Gothic font in the font list. If I select this font in Flash is seems to be Bell Gothic Light. The Bold and Black version can't be chosen from flash.
However, if I delete the Bell Gothic Light font from my system folder Flash again displays the Bell Gothic font in the fontlist, but if I select it, it seems to be Bell Gothic Black!
So flash is able to use the Bell Gothic Black font, but only if other Bell Gothic fonts are deleted from the font-folder.
I would really like to be able to use all 3 Bell Gothic Fonts in flash.
Is there any way to do this?
Thank you very much for your advise...

Font Licensing For Embedded Fonts
I am having an Interactive GUI designed and developed in FLASH for commercial purposes. It has been explained to me that if the fonts used are embedded in the FLASH file than a license isnt needed for each computer the FLASH file and applicable fonts is loaded on. Does it matter if the content in the Flash file is database driven and dynamically displayed.
Looking for any feedback. Thank you.
Fonts On Appearing In Font Menu
Certain fonts don't appear in my font menu (they usually seem to be OpenType) even though the same fonts appear in other apps such as Photoshop.
I am on a Mac running 10.4.8.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
Embedded Fonts - Use Font From Parent SWF
Consider this.
I have a main.swf which contains all my code compilation etc etc. In this main.SWF I also have all my fonts embedded.
I also have a skin.swf . main.swf loads this skin.swf.
I have a bunch of movieclips containing text fields inside the skin.swf. I do not want to embed the same font on the skin.swf as I dont believe I should need to.
When I try and set the text of one of the fields in the skin.swf the characters do not show due to not finding the embedded chars. The embedded chars are all in theparent main.swf.
Is there any way to force the flash player to use embedded font chars from main.swf without duplicating all that font data into the skin.swf as well?
I havent been able to find very good documentation on font embedding asn I really hope Adobe are working on making this much more flexible. (Id like to be able to embed all fonts via external actionscript and let any child SWF use those same fonts. embedding the same font multiple times for the same project would just be stupid.
Can anyone provide any info? Have I just not found the correct documentation?
[FONTS] Best Way To Load Font At Runtime
Hey everybody.
Hopefully this thread will be a resource to all after some of the Flash heavyweights share their take. I've searched long and hard and seen all kinds of random approaches to sharing fonts, embedding fonts, etc, but never conclusive facts about the best way for it to be done.
What is the best way to load & track loading progress of a font at runtime via libraries, actionscript, or external swfs?
I've seen a lot of different hacks but the requirements I'm looking to meet are:
#1: Load fonts from another resource so filesize on the main swf is kept small.
#2: Track progress of loading the fonts at runtime.
From what I've seen using shared libraries and such, I've never learned how & when flash loads them and whether or not that can be tweaked or monitored.
Thanks for the input!
Not Including Font Outlines And Using Device Fonts
Hello,
I have a flash file that has a lot of text links, which is making the file size a bit bigger than I'd hoped.
I'm considering not including the font outlines and instead using Device Fonts, which would decrease the file size. The Device Font will give me some control, I'll at least be certain that all users will see sans text, but I'm concerned that the text size may vary slightly depending on the browser and platform the viewer has.
Does anyone know what will happen to the text if the outlines are not included? Will the text appear slightly different on a PC in IE versus on a Mac in Netscape for example.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Janet
Dynamic Font Selection From SERVER Fonts
I am looking for a way to achieve the following:
"Allow a Flash 6 client to select from a list of fonts which reside on the SERVER, and have it format a client side editable text box with that font. The client does NOT have the font installed on their local system."
The number of fonts on the server will be very large, so embedding them all is not an option. And no, I can't live with the (limited) list of fonts on the client.
The application would almost be like FlashTyper, if it could apply the new font formatting selection immediately to the font in the text box. (Although my app doesn't need all the other sexy effects that FlashTyper has)
It would be acceptable to reload the textbox with a dynamically created movie (PHP on server) containing the new font, but I can't find a program that says it is able to font-substitute Flash MX files.
Thanks,
Alastair
Fonts Get Blurry When Font Outline Included?
I have a small problem. I have a dynamic text field. When I use the embed font outline option the fonts get blurry. The fonts are right justified, they are on whole pixel values (23.0). The font looks fine when I leave the embed font outline off. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.
Pixel/superpixel Fonts.......anyone Tell Me Why They Look Blurry As Any Other Font?
ok so i hear about super pixel and pixel fonts and think gee this is the answer to my blurry font issue on my site... i go and download a few of these follow the directions...publish my site...guess what they look just as blurry as any other font.. i followed the directions? I made sure all numbers were whole with no decimal and the fonts were enlarged by 8's... why are they still blurry? What am I missing?
Using Japanese And Chinese Fonts Without Font Symbols.
Hi there,
Using japanese and chinese fonts without font symbols.
I use a V2 textArea component
fontSymbols in flash library + xml loading + css applying.
Works great, text is displayed correctly with the correct font and formating, bitmap fonts or anti-aliased.
But as you know if you dealt already with such a situation each font symbols adds a lot to the swf files (more than 1 meg +/ font symbol).
Instead of using font symbols, which embed the complete font, I've decided to test a workaround. The good classic method of using a dummy text field to which you define selected embed options.
So I have the following:
a dynamic text field with "abcJapanese font" with embed option japanese kana and kenji. Named : dummy_txt
a textarea component named test_cpn editable turned off and html turned off through Flash Gui.
code on frame 5:
ActionScript Code:
test_cpn.setStyle("embedFonts",true);
test_cpn.setStyle("fontFamily","イワタ中ゴシック");
test_cpn.setStyle("fontSize","13");
test_cpn.text="<u>test</u> あなたのブランドの雰囲気をあなたの独自性を尊重しながら作り出します。";
What I've tested:
A: dummy_txt with antialias for animation
---> works japanese font displays correctly in textarea component.
this works with japanese fonts which displays correctly in flash font selector or with unrecognized characters like those desplayed with squares.
B: dummy_txt with no antialias
---> nothing appears in textarea component.
C: dummy_txt with antialias for animation + test_cpn.html=true
---> nothing appears in textarea component.
D: dummy_txt with antialias for animation + test_cpn.editable=true
---> nothing appears in textarea component.
C et D seems to produce same results with regular occidental fonts. As soon as a modification is done to the text area nothing appears anymore...
Thank you in advance for your help.
Fonts Not Showing And Font Families Disconnected
I began building a site using the Avenir typeface. However not all the fonts in the family showed up. They showed up fine in other programs however. I examined my font management software (Suitcase), couldn't find any problems, and returned to the Flash document only to discover the Avenir font doesn't show up at all now! Message says that it's missing and for me to choose a substitute. I've read another post on here with the same issue however no one had responded to it, so I know I'm not the only one to have this issue. Any insight anyone or fix?
Also don't know if this is related but there is a font in my font library "Adobe invisi font" and my font management software says it is corrupt. However, I don't know where this font came from so can't reinstall it. I tried removing it but it came back the next time I restarted my computer.
On an annoying note, all my fonts in the menu are not grouped into font families making it time consuming to scroll through them looking for a font. Is there a fix for this?
Thanks for any help.
Question About Embedded Fonts Vs. Font Symbols
ive never really understood this.
i want to use a custom font. so i embed it. the way i've always done it though was for every single text field that i have, i have to goto the properties and manually embed the font into it.
but by doing that, am i embedding the same font over and over and over again? or is flash smart, and only embeds it once?
ive also read about font symbols, and tried using them, but it never works. for instance, i create a font symbol, lets call the font BlahX, and i give it the name "embedX".
i goto the text field, and set the font to embedX*, but when i publish it and view it on another system, the font is just times new roman. so what gives? apparently font symbols dont mean "embedded font" , so what the heck is the point of it?
Embeded Font Fonts In Dynamic Text
I am loading text from a .txt file into a dynamic text box and the semi-colon(;) isn't showing up. I have all the characters embedded, I have tried using %3B and still I get nothing...all the other characters show up.
I am using Flash 8, the font is Arial.
Any ideas?
Dynamic Load Fonts - Embed Font Problem
I my BASE.SWF movie I want to dynamicly create embed text fields with. I create coule of font movies files (e.g. ARIA.SWF where is Arial font (I use export for Action Script))
In BASE.SWF I load that movies (using load movie) and then creating text field. Did not work.
! In BASE.SWF I cannot add that fonts or font Symbols with import for runtime sharing oprion, because the list of fonts to load will be dynamicly generated from php/mysql.
Please help me to solve this problem
Embedding Fonts, Or Font Symbol, For Dynamic Text?
Hello.
I use the same fonts throughout my website. The site itself is modular in nature, meaning several movies are loaded into and on top of one another. I have a shared library that all movies use for certain assetts.
My question is this. Can I embed or create a font symbol to apply to a dynamic text field that loads a .txt file? Instead of using a font the user has, I would like them to view the text in a pixel font that I use throughout the site.
Can it be done and what is the best method.
Useing HTML Font Tags And Uncommon Fonts.
I'm not sure if this is the best way to do what I want so I'm asking for advice. I've got several textboxes that are reading in html formated text. I want to use some cool fonts I downloaded but aren't that common. How do I make it so people that don't have the font on their PC can see it with out embedding it? I've heard about putting fonts in your libary, would that work? If I upload the font to my server will flash beable to use that to display it like in PHP?
TextFormat.font,exporting Fonts, _level Stacks
I just wasted a lot of time trying to figure this out so I thought that I would post what I found.
This may be a bug - but if I'm wrong please correct me.
The gig was that I was creating a movie stack with multiple .swf's loaded in different _levels. In the upper _levels of the Stack, I had a dynamic text field that I was applying a TextFormat to.
It looked something like this:
Code:
hFormat=new TextFormat();
hFormat.align="left";
hFormat.font="Verdana";
hFormat.size=10;
hFormat.color=0x666666;
Everything was working fine in the standalone swf file (not in the stack). The font was showing and exported correctly. When I put the swf in the stack _level99, the text field disappeared. The debugger was showing it in the stack where it should be, and reading all of its attributes correctly execpt for _width=0. After troubleshooting for about two hours, I tried exporting the font from _level0 instead of _level99, and voila! - problem solved.
For some reason, the exported font in the stacked swf was not exporting correctly, or not being read. I even deleted the linked font symbol from _level99's library, to see if it would still work using the exported font from _level0, and it did.
Has anybody else run into this problem?

Embedded Fonts Make Text Disappear
Hi everyone,
I just vanted to rotate some dynamically created text fields. the embedFonts is set true. Adobe and every book I have says that the embedFonts allows text rendering, like rotation. But as I removed the rotation, suprise, suprise,the embedFonts itself makes text fields disappear.
I also tryied to put an empty text box on the stage with the font embedded and works only without any rotation or rotation set to 0.
I don't understand. Do you?

Pls Help On How To Make Special Fonts Appear In Dynamic Text Field
hi! I was able to successfully make links out of captions from an xml file thru reference
http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showthread.php?p=2089357 given by a helpful member Stringy. Thanks stringy. It worked ok. My problem now is that I wanted to use a special font (frenchscript mt) for the captions in the dynamic text field. I've done all kinds of embedding inc. the new font symbol embedding method but nothing works. I test if embedding was done by removing the font from my fonts folder. But when I do this, the captions become Arial I even tried to put a plain dynamic text field on stage using the special font, but the same thing happens when I remove the special font from the fonts folder. What can I do to make sure that even users without this font will be able to view the caption in the special font??? Pls help, thanks very much
Anyone Know Flash CS3 Embed Font's Glyphs Range With Font Class(no TextField )
I have add some font by Font class in the library
(TextFeild.embedFonts=true)
but the font's glyphs looks not enough.
when i use text String " ü ä ö ß π à â ç è é ê ë î ï ô ù û œ "
only the "Ï€" and "Å“" is can be visible.
Font.hasGlyphs also return false;
if i only create a TextField, and Click the Embed button selection glyphs range.
the text will be fine.
but i won't use TextField by drag to the stage
i heard in flex:
@font-face {
src:local("Arial");
fontFamily: myFont;
flashType: true;
unicodeRange:
U+0041-U+005A, /* [A..Z] */
U+0061-U+007A, /* a-z */
U+0030-U+0039, /* [0..9] */
U+002E-U+002E; /* [.] */
}
so what can i do in Flash CS 3?
thanks a lot
i really tried working on this.maybe i just need go back use the .....TextField.
How Can I Make Font Runtime Sharing Work?
Hallo all,
I wan't to use Flash's font runtime sharing feature, and I just can't find the way. I have a dynamic text box and I want, at the press of a button, to change the text box's font.
The thing is that I want the font to come from a shared library
and I need to do this with actionScript. I have read again and again Flash's help on the matter but I can't make it work.
By the way, when I use "export to ActionScript", the thing works fine, but it make my original file huge, so the idea of runtime sharing should fit best in my case.
Any help will be apreceated for the rest of my Flash days!
