Usability Problem: MC In Focus While Testing Movie
hi there
it's strange: when I test my movie from inside flash 9 (ctrl+enter)
the MC I just edited keeps in focus:
when I test a game and press UP DOWN etc.
the MC inside my fla is moving too,
while the compiled swf is playing!
that's really annoying!
how do i fix that?

Testing Flash Movie Focus Within An Html Page...?
is there an easy way to trigger events when a user clicks and/or rolls outside of a flash move thats embedded in an html page? i tried to use a _root.onSetFocus/_root.onKillFocus command, but that didnt return anything when the user clicks on anything outside of the flash movie. i then tried creating a 2-pixel mc around the border of my movie that triggers whenever the mouse rolls over it, but when i test the mc, the events dont get triggered unless you roll very slowly over the mc (because its so thin). is there a better, more sure fire way to get solid results? i was thinking of calling a _root.onEnterFrame=checkBounds; .... where function checkBounds() gets the x/y position of the mouse and makes sure that its within bounds of the Stage height and width, but id like to know if theres a better and more efficient way to do it that im just not aware of.

i have a form i built in flash, and i want it to be user friendly. i want to be able to hit tab and go from input field to input field. except when i hit tab it picks random fields to go to, skipping fields or even going backwards. anyone have an idea as to how to make the tab button work?

Help In Usability System
Hi, I need some guidance in where to find any tutorials or open source fla on this. I need to develop an application whereby there's a map filled with draggable icons (representing PCs). I can create, delete, drag, rename those icons on-the-fly. It's something like our Windows Desktop in concept but each icon contains information about that PC. The information will be shown when I highlite the icon.
Some lead I have is dynamically create movie instances on the fly using the attachmovie function but it's still insufficient for me to start coding. Thanks in advance.

Help,
I am trying to figure out the best way to create a flash website containing a bunch of images- kind of like a gallery.
There will be one page with buttons and a bit of animation and when you click on a button it takes you to another section of images. and another button to another set. and so on....
1. Is it best to have all of the pages in one file as scenes (really big file) or best to have separate flash files that are linked with buttons. - and if so- how o you link the different fla files or swfs?
2. I would like the page to open in the center of the computer screen and is it possible to force a fixed size to this window?
3. Should I use PHP to control my database of images- it takes forever to download the files on dial up browsers. I don't know much about it but someone suggested it to me.
4. is there a minumum FLA or SWF size that I should adhere to? my current file is about 7 MB with many diff. scenes. I have not tested it on the the web yet but i am very afraid of it wokring slowly and taking forever for the images to download.
I welcome and appreciate any suggstions.

Flash Usability?
Hey,
I was wondering, I'm designing this fan site for a friend of mine and we're wondering ..not everybody is gonna see the flash. Not everybody has flash installed, so is there anyway where people who don't have flash installed can install it..through a script that we can put in the flash?
Basically, I've seen on sites where they check your computer to see if you have the latest flash installed and if you have it installed, you can enter. If not, I think you have to download it.
Does anybody know of any ways to do that or know of any tips?

I used global object in MX, but in the end it doesn't work like i want it to, many times i have to write _global.MC _global.MyArray and so on because just calling MC or juts MyArray it doesn't work and that is the whole point of global right? so you can call it from anywhere.. i could just the same make some MC global and use it, it would be the same...

How do you code simple buttons and complex buttons that show they are on or have been activated? I want my interface to be able to tell my users that they are in a specific area by highlighting the button on my menus. (Just like the navigation menu for kirupa.com)

Flash Usability Question
Im new to Flash and was thinking about how to produce a flash website that would allow the browsers back/foward buttons to function. On another post there was a link to create flash to allow for the bakc/foard buttons but I was wondering if the method beow would work. Would they not work if for example, rather than building the website into one flash file and adding the swf into one html page, it was made with a number of seperate flash files. Therefore when a menu button within the first flash file is clicked it would move to another html file containing another swf which would basically be a simlar swf but altered slightly for the new content.??

I created this website using two swf files, one for the gallery and one for the top section. I was hoping by using the method above I could split the website up more and basically create a number of html files, each with the exact same swf files for the gallery and menu but perhaps have a different swf file for each content part allowing more html files and hence the back/foward buttons would work? The only problem I can think of is that more files = bigger file sizes and the requirement of new flash files to be loaded everytime a menu button is clicked rather than just the one at the start.
Any advice is greatly apreciated.

Hello all,
I was contracted to build a website that demonstrates online workshops for Business managemant...the premiss isnt important but heres were im not to sure about, they are going to have video that will stream, or you can download to watch these workshops, but the videos are going ot play inside a flash movie. These need to be displayed across mutil platforms, and im curious as to if the video is in flash is that the only plug in the end user needs to view the movie? If its AVI does it need codex or w/e? any info or suggestions on were to look about this would be great. Thanks guys.

Draggable Menu 2.0 – Part II: Usability
I downloaded the complete source code in the end of the tutorial and it works. But when I tried to copy all the layers of this source code and paste it into the flash timeline of my own website, the code the doesn't work anymore. Can someone tell me what the problem is here? Ok i am testing my movie... when i got to test movie from going to the menu
(control---> test movie) my movie works fine... things are moving like they should be and text is being loaded where it should be .
(i am actually loading a movie dynamically using loadmovie and that movie is loading text into it dynamilcally using the loadvariables)
anyway all of it looks fine when i test it.... but then when i do a publish preview in HTML the text is not loaded and somethings arent moving.... does any one have any idea what the problem could be? why when i do test movie it runs fine BUT when i preview in HTML OR run the swf file on its own it is not working??

Testing My Movie
Hi guys, this is probably a noob question but I'm just learning Flash in class this semester. Anyway, my question is that I have a movie that is 300px X 250px and whenever I test my movie to see what I've done so far it's actually showing content outside of the stage. It initially gives me a window with the exact size of my movie, but on the bottom right corner it has that little expandable window grab and when I click and drag I see all the content on my movie that is in the work area. I hope I'm making sense but is this supposed to be happening? Because I'm supposed to present the .swf file this Tuesday but I'm not sure if my teacher will tell me that there's more content showing than supposed to. Any solutions would be much appreciated!

Issues With Testing My Movie
I've been working on this project for about 4 weeks now and everything was going great. All of a sudden when I was testing my movie, the dimensions on the main page changed. I had a room with a blue floor and purple walls (background colour is purple as well. There are buttons going off of it and where i made the borders on the floor and walls, suddenly when i go to test the movie the window is bigger than normal and there is an extra purple border around everything. This is in Flash 5. And it's totally stressing me out, I'd appreciate a quick response since my project is due soon =)

hi there everyone ...... im new to this thread and i didnt know where to post this problem ....

Testing Movie In Actionscript 3
I'm not sure if this has been noted before;
When I explicitly define the location of the class in the import statement, and coincidentally there happens to be a class with the same name in the folder where the .fla file resides, the "compiler/run time processor" ignores the explicit declaration and uses the current folder. (see bwlow for layout)
This can take hours of frustration to figure out. I had to resort to moving the files that I knew i needed to a separate folder to make the movie work. Then move the other files one at a time until it failed!
This may be just a housekeeping issue, but it also appears to be an error in the compiler!!!

Testing My Movie + Php +mysql

I've been trying to test my movie, which calls php to call MYSQL, but I haven't been able to get it to access the database, and it just hangs.
Right now I'm running apache, mysql server, so I don't know what could be the problem. Is it possible the testing movie option doesn't work with php? And I'd actually have to make a html to have hope of accessing it?

Movie Ok On Testing But Not When Published
hi all, i have finish a little movie, so i've test it with Flash preview and all seem to be ok, but when i publish and open it with explorer or other browser, the movie isn't reproduced at all: expecially the song isn't charged and sound volume control also seem to be broken and not dragable.
The first frame of that movie start with an onLoad() instruction that have inside the rest of code for sound and controller.
On flash preview all is ok, but if i publish and open it with a browser that problems come out. How is it possible?
If i cut off the onLoad() all is reproduced also on browser, but the song is reproduced for many times, when animation pass for first frame.
how should i solve?

Problems Testing Movie
Okay, so here's the problem: Im making an interactive animation in flash mx and when Im editing it on the stage the buttons all work fine. When I go to test movie the buttons lead to the wrong place. I checked the actions and they all seem right. Any ideas on what went wrong?

Testing Movie /serious Bug In Flash?
ok, i have flash 7 and when i test a movie that loads an external .swf(control+enter) with the bandwidth profiler it either
a- loads fine but does not play the loaded movie on completion (whic it does on the internet)
or
b- when i hit (control+enter) again so it simulates download, the main movie ignores all my stops() and goes to the last frame and then simulates download.
very erratic, very annoying what the hell is flash mx 2004 doing?? it totally is driving me nuts..i cant even test a movie without getting crazy results.....anybody seen this before???

JPGS Disappeared In Testing Movie.

I am experiencing a strange problem in my animation a very simple animation, That is : I have imported 40 thumbnails jpgs in my Symbol > Graphics side by side to each other, i place the beginning of the image sequence at one side of the Stage and after 150 frames the whole sequence ends by tweening to the other side. BUT the problem occuring is that in flash player testing of the swf all the images are in showing in plain color or looks like the images colors are spread.

Load Movie Testing Problems
Okay the problem I am having is this:
I am trying to test my movie for the slow V90 modem connection (just hit enter twice.) It works on my individual movies. But when I load the .swf files into the stage they just fly right past the preloading like it isn't there ... even though I did hit enter twice ... and a third time and a forth time. Any Idea on how to test this? I'd like to see how my movies flow together.
What I have is just the stage which has a blank MC on it ... and the first frame has this code.
loadMovie("preload.swf", "_root.clipload");
and the mc itself has this code
onClipEvent (load) {
setProperty("_root.loadme", _xscale, "100");
setProperty("_root.loadme", _yscale, "100");
}
so all it's doing is loading the preload in ... by just flies through it ... thanks in advance.

Testing Individual MC's Instead Of Entire Movie
Is there a way to test just a movie clip you've created versus testing the entire movie? I know there's also a "test scene" option, but I've heard nobody really uses scenes anymore since MC's came along. Anyhow, it seems like there should be a way cause it's a pain to have to test the entire movie when I just want to see a small movie clip in it. Thanks!

Flash CS3 Slow After Testing Movie?
I've looked all over for an answer to the question and called Adobe but no luck so far.
I got CS3 when it came out and was pleasantly surprised to find Flash very quick on my iMac G5 2GHz with 1.5GB RAM. But after a while, I noticed that it would randomly slow down. I'd use it for a few minutes, then suddenly, everything would lag, particularly moving around in the Actions panel. For example, it becomes very hard just to highlight text or scroll up and down.
After a couple months of this, I've realized that it seems to happen after I do a Test Movie. If I just open Flash and use it without ever testing, its fine. And its not every time I test, but often enough.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas?

UiScroller Is Not Working While Testing The Movie

I have a small problem with my movieclip in flash. I created a dynamic text area inside a movie clip where I have text inside of it. And then I put a UIScrollBar next to the text area. The parameters of the scroller are OK and the instance name of the text are as well. I also made the text "scrollable" so that the text should be able to read up to bottom. When I test the movie (ctrl + enter) the flash file works great. But when I preview it on a browser, I can´t see any text where I should see. There´s in only left the UIScroller. The text is just invisible
So do you know what´s the problem and what I should do next to get it to work?

Skipping Ahead In Testing Movie
Is there another way to test a certain part of a movie without using scenes or without putting content in a new frame and using a gotoAndPlay to go to that frame?
I am looking for a way to skip over content so that I don't have to watch it each time I test my movie- when I move some code from one frame to the next it stops working.

Movie Clip Position Testing
Is there a way to test the _y of all movie clips and set a function that if there is a movie clip at _y = 75 that it is 'topMovie' and if another clip is at (topMovie + topMovie._height) THAT movie will be 'secondMovie' and so on ad infinitum?

Attach Movie Position Testing
when movieclips are atached to the stage using

obviously some clips will be placed on top of each other.
how can i test that this is happening and make changes to their positions based on whether they are touching or not.

[F8] Globals Only Work When Testing Movie In Flash
Hi,
I'm developing a program that is compiled of a lot of different files. I have a global array created by a file loaded into the 3rd level (just using loadMovie at this point). Then I have assets in a file loaded into the 1st level that use data from that global array.
When I test the flash application inside of flash (using control->test movie) it works fine, but when I go to play it in the Stand Alone Flash player or in the browser it no longer works, the global variable appears undefined to the other levels. Any idea why this is?
I know that the global is being created and populated correctly because I set up a text box on level3 and level0, level3 shows the correct array and level0 shows undefined. Any ideas?

Video Looks Pixelated When Exported, But Not When Testing Movie
EDIT Problem has been solved. I was exporting my SWF file into a folder that had an older encoded video file with the same name (the same video file, but smaller in size). So that's why it was looking like that.
I've imported an encoded video file into my flash movie. When I imported it I changed the dimensions to make it a little bigger. I thought this might make it look pixelated, but when I clicked Test Movie it looked completely fine. Then I exported the movie and opened the SWF file and now the video looks pixelated.
Anyone know why this is happening?
I don't see how it could be the Export options since (if I'm not mistaken) when you change those options, and click Test Movie after, you see the changes (like JPEG quality).
Help?

Testing Movie On A Remote Machine (server)
one machine is functioning as a server.
on the other machine i run a swf file (test movie).
i want it to function as if it is on the same machine.
i get an error (504)
Error opening URL 'bla bla bla......../flashlogin.aspx'
is there any definitions that i have to define in order to connect?
(the guy that works on the server side files says its my problem and i have to format windows and install flash again i am sure that there is a less complicated and time consuming solution.)
