Tips For Advanced Drop-down Menu Wanted
I use drop-down menus, that are created dynamically according to content of XML document - for instance, the number of items is not fixed and also the size and position of buttons can be set according to parameters stored in XML file. Well, because the finall size and positon of the drop-down menu is unknown, usage of invisible button in the backgroud for hidding the menu on rollout is not the best way - but is there any other way? Yes, of course - i can attach the invisible button and set its parameters dynamically as well, but that requires counting the number of items and their size together, so to find out the actual size of whole menu, than resize the invisible button accordingly (I am using this approach now) - still, I would like to have something more "elegant".

at my website i have a link to my forums, the problem is i want to link the forums to my top frame but if ic do that it signs you out of the forums whenever you go into a new page of the forums so i have to open the forums in a _blank page.

Is there a way i can open the forums in the top frame without these problems.

Banner & Link Collection Question

I know I am posting on the wrong forum, but everybody has always been good with my answers here

Situation: Client wants me to deposit a bunch of links and banners to various medical portals, directories, pages, etc. Each deposited site has their way to monitor the CPC rate which is included for their PPC charge.

Problem: When I have to collect and compose a report of the stats at the end of the month, is their a program I can use that will track each link/banner and compose a chart for all of them, rather than having to do it manually (logging in to each area and collecting the stats in a report?

For my own site, Cpanel has Awstats which I use for web stats, and I use Phpadsnew for my banner ads. Just want something like these that will collect all of them. Thanks.

Any help would be great, as you all always do.

Flash & Actionscript For Flash Only Sites. Opinions Wanted.

I just want to ask what the Flash community thinks about developing websites with entirely Flash & Actionscript ONLY, as in one stage window hosting the entire website. The whole shebang, Flash and nothing else.

Many web designers, like myself, still struggle with incompatible and non-conforming browsers, CSS, XHTML, and having to test websites on different browsers takes a lot of time, not even to mention the time it takes to get things rendering the same on multiple browsers.

Wouldn't it be better for me to start developing my websites as a whole in Flash.

Write and test on one browser, and know it will work everywhere, it just sounds much better than my current workflow.

What Is The Garbage Collection In Actionscript 3.0?
Could someone help me to understand what garbage collection is?

Does it mean that any object needs to be deleted after its being used? If yes, how can this be done? I heve heard about using (Null) or something like that.

Garbage Collection On Export For ActionScript
Does anyone know if items marked "Export for ActionScript" in a loaded SWF will ever be garbage collected?

I know that they won't be GC'ed in the main SWF, but when that main shell loads an external SWF module that also has library items set to export, and then later unloads that SWF --- will the module "Export for ActionScript" items ever be picked up by the GC, or will they continue to exist in the shell forever? (And add duplicates if I load that module SWF module multiple times)

Zoom / Move Via Link - Advanced Scripting Wanted
Hi guys!

I had written a long, fairly amusing post, but it got sucked into oblivion by some nasty internet god (M$ likely).

I need help badly with a project way overdue.

HereÂ´s what I need:

A map in flash that will zoom in and move to a position via a link (several links/posititions are needed). IÂ´d like to do this with actionscript tweens to fade animation in/out. But this is not strictly necessary.

If fancy, IÂ´d like the map to 'jump' when moving between points so that when you click a second link, the map will zoom out, and 50% towards the new position will zoom in again. But this could easily get out of hand... Especially for little me.

IÂ´ve tried searching the net for a solution but all I could find was the joystick type map, which is not what I want. I need some code that will allow me to move and zoom the map to a set position for each link.

Has anyone done this before, or can any of you experts guide me in my quest?

IÂ´d be very grateful, as I am no actionscript wiz. But I do know what I want.

ActionScript Code Wanted For Random "Flash Cards"
Let's say on one layer I have four frames, each containing different content. On another layer, I have a button. Each time the user presses the button, I want them to be taken randomly to one of the four frames. The next button push, they are randomly taken to another frame, without repeating a frame already seen.

This goes on until all four frames have been seen. On the fifth button push, the user is sent to a fifth frame that has the message "Finished."

Could someone tell me the button.onRelease ActionScript code to accomplish this? Either AS 1 or AS 2, but please tell me which is being used.

I Need Some Actionscript Tips/ideas
I'm looking to make a multiple choice 6 question quiz. If the player gets five out of six questions correct they are directed to a form page(this would be a html page). If they get 4 or less correct they are directed somewhere else(different HTML page).

-I need to know how to assign 1 point value to each correct answer.
-How to get those values to total up and then if they = more than 5 points, direct to a particular page, if they get 4 or less right I need it to go to a different page.

Actionscript Performance Tips?

I've got a little model which acts somewhat like a magnetic field simulator. There are two little black dots which you can drag around, and they make lots of other points spin depending on where the two black ones are.

Thing is, it is a little slow. Especially with more than two black dots. The main actionscript looks like this:

Inspired by senocular's impressive "ActionScript 3 Tip of the Day" thread over at the Kirupa forums, I thought I would start something similar here at Ultrashock.

I will try to add an ActionScript tip, code snippet, example, etc, at least once a day to this thread and a few classes might also make an appearance. The ActionScript will range from AS2 to AS3 and may even include some prototype related snippets (even though I'm not keen on them).

I would like to try and keep this thread as tidy as possible (unlike the Full Screen Flash thread ), so please post any comments or questions in the ActionScript Tips Discussion thread.

Heres what i would like if someone is willing to help!

The idea here is that if i give each letter of the alpahabet a number from 1-26
when they enter there name (in the TYPE YOUR NAME HERE FEILD) it then adds up the numbers and places the name that corresponds with that number in the YOUR NAME FEILD...

Hi, I'm pretty well grounded in the fundamentals of Flash MX 2004, having worked through the six-CD "How to Gurus" tutorial. Now, I'd like to learn how to use Flash ActionScript 2. How To Write Efficient Actionscript? Any Tips?

I've been using flash for a good 7-8 months now, but i've always had a bit of a problem with writing efficient actionscript. Basically at the moment im just using a bunch of if else statements to execute all the "in" and "out" transitions of the site.

Myself Vimal here. I am a web designer, but I am a novice in flash actionscripting. I need your help!.

I am planning to build an online portfolio of all my works. This is what I have in my mind right now.

Heya, I want to be able to read write varibles to a text file on a server from actionscript. Apparently you can use a php script for processing? or something like that. Can anyone help?

As an example, I want a user to fill in a form and have the variable appended to the end of a list of variables... or something like that.

anyone know of any tips or insights into how to make fadeout and fadein effects play smoothly across mac, pc, fast vs. slow computers using actionscript in mx?

My Top Six Tips For Using Flash
These are the top six things i think people need to do/know to work well in flash do all these and save time and head aches.

1.Name Every symbol
When you make a symbol (Movie clip, Graphic, Button) ALLWAYS NAME IT!!! it will save you time down the road. In Flash you can not have two different symbol's in the same flash with the same name.

2.Name Every layer
When you make a layer name it so you know what it does this way you can find the layer you need to when you need it.

3.Organize your library
Not a lot of people do this one it's not that hard just make folders in your library named Movie Clips, Graphics, Symbols, Tweens, Sounds. The Graphics folder is for all imported graphics and the Symbols folder is for all objects you convert to graphics. If it applies you may also want to make a folder for components.

4.Use script foot notes
No matter how good a scripter you are every one forgets what parts of there script are meant to do so using scripting foot notes is key. To add a foot note just type // then what ever the note is this note will only show up in the actions panel.

5.Have flash reformat your sound files
When you import sounds they are set at a quality that may be two high you can lower this and it will sound the same and it will lower your flashes size. To reformat the sound right click on it in your library and select properties then compression. If it's music then select MP3 and set it at 16 kbps or 20 kbps if it's some one talking select speech and keep it at about 22 kHz.

6.Put a Password on your flash files
You love your work right? then protect it with a password this way no one can import your fla in to flash and rip it apart. Go to File/Publish settings then click the box Protect from importing then set your password, There your file is now safe.

I have this RPG-like screen where you have a character walking through.. the forest or something.. and the thing is.. it's lagging.. LOTS..

On that scene.. there are quite a lot of Tree graphics and grass graphics.. I've tested this and apparently graphics run a lot smoother than movieclips with bitmap caching on..

Also.. My character has lots of different hair styles all put into one movieclip.. and i thought that by removing them all.. and just have a attachMovie() script to pull in the appropriate hairstyle clips.. it would go faster..

but apparently it doesn't seem to of made much difference..

what other ways can i reduce the lag on flash?
