What Are Your Book Recommendations?
Hey everyone
Do you guys have any book recommendations? This new job of mine requires me to be on call 10 hours a week, which means I'll have five hours of down time two times a week. I'm specifically interested in using the stage like wefail does at amplifier.com and billyharvey.com, as well as loading techniques. The way they get so much to load so fast intrigues me too (http://www.facingnewyork.com/).
But anyway, just looking for good suggestions.

MX Book Recommendations Please
Hi folks
I need to buy two or three Flash MX tutorial books - can any of you please recommend any particularly good ones you've come across?
I've got a couple of ideas - but I just wanted to get a few opinions here (you're more trustworthy than Amazon's reader reviews).
Cheers in advance

Book Recommendations
I'm interested in learning the recommendations of the other members of this online community when it comes to learning ActionScript through reading books. To me, it seems as though few good intermediate-to-advanced books exists that explain ActionScript. Considering the number of published books on the subject, I find that very disappointing.
I understand that ActionScript for Flash MX: The Definitive Guide, Second Edition by Colin Moock is highly recommended. I plan to purchase this book soon, if for no other reason that I've always enjoyed employing my O'Reilly for reference.
Can anyone recommend any other books?
I'm grateful for everyone's help!

Book Recommendations
I need some recommendations for books that will help me with learning FlashMX. I have used FlashMX before and can do VERY simple stuff, but for the most part I'm overwhelmed by it.
What I'm trying to learn is just simple stuff. I have a partner with clients that need/want some simple flash in their website - stuff like flash navigation, and animated front pages with music.
I like stuff that is hands-on. I really need example files to be able to learn anything - because If I can't figure something out I can usually study a finished product and see what I'm doing wrong.
I will most likely go and physically buy it TODAY from Barnes and Noble since it is right down the street from me. So, I'm sort of looking for some recommendations based on stuff Barnes and Noble might have. Any recommendations are appreciated though.
Thanks!

Flash MX Book Recommendations?
hey all,
I just started flashing and right now I'm working on the tutorials that came with the program. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest any good books for Flash MX. I heard the Macromedia Flash MX: Training From the Source is a good book. I am just looking for a book that goes through the general stuff about Flash MX like animation, ActionScripting, etc. Thanks!

Book Actionscript Recommendations
Hey guys! I'm new to actionscript and I was wondering if there is a good actionscript book out there for beginners - intermediaters. Any recommendations? It would be great if the book itself is not textbook dead-boring style.. i'm doing my HSC, i seriously do not need any more textbooks in my life. But then again, if I'm just too idealistic then just fling a textbook at me, i guess I don't really have much of a choice.
Thx guys

Medium To Advanced Skill Book Recommendations?
I just got the Sam's "Teach Yourself Flash MX in 24 Hours" book, and it's a pretty good starter book. Basic drawing, animation, sound, and some actionscript.
I think I'll be able to get the basics from it.
But VERY soon I'm going to need to be able to create a Web interface very much like what's here:
http://qd.modernpostcard.com/cgi-bin...9Xpo9Y8Vxyhjz0
(If the link doesn't work, it's an interactive postcard creator using Flash to allow the user to select postcard size, alignment, insert text, etc. It then sends a copy of the completed postcard to the printers, and stores the card in the user's account.)
What are some book/help sites out there that will help me learn what it takes to do something like that?
Then, I'm also going to need help developing my skills in a more aesthetic way, in order to do animations like:
http://www.absolutionz.com/projects/devprojects.asp
and
http://www.2advanced.com/flashindex.htm
or at least start out with
http://winnovate.com/index.htm
Less animated movie type stuff, which it seems all Flash how-to books I've seen seem to focus on, and more Flash that's incorporated into a site's design.
Anyway, any recommendations for books that focus on functional Web applications mainly, and secondly books that help with creating Flash for integral site design.
Thanks for any replies!!

Flash Sound / File System / Book Recommendations?
I'm fairly new to flash and actionscripting but i'm very vested in programming. (VB.NET, ASP.NET, PHP, VB6, SQL, C++, C, Javascript, HTML, etc)
I'm need to create a sound player that loads files from a file system folder and then plays each file upon the user clicking "Play" or "Next Track" etc etc. The file needs to stream and preload so that its playing while downloading.
When the user loads the swf file I want it to look in a certain folder and load "x" amount of files. The number can vary, but they'd all be .mp3 format. This allow for easy management through an FTP client.
I'm looking for a good book on this so I can have some good reference.
And ideas?
Thanks!

CMS Recommendations ?
Hi Forum
I've posted something like this earlier and was wondering if there are any new hot solutions out there besides Drupal...
I find myself making more and more the same kind of sites... you know... the old home / about / portfolio / contact kinda sites. The request for "can you make this part updateable" comes in also more often...
Most CMS solutions that I've looked into seem to be made for blogs / portals / community kind of sites with tons of features. I'm a little overwhelmed by just digging through the instructions.
I'm certainly willing to invest a little bit of time to learn a new system if it will suit me in the future.
I'm looking for something that would allow the user to add items in the portfolio section for example. I'm thinking a few text fields and a few images.. and then put all that into XML format so that the front end (flash) can read it and keep the site upto date.
Any suggestions or thoughts? I'd appreciate it.
Thanks for your time.

Preloader Recommendations
I'm pretty new to flash but am a programmer by trade.
I'm looking for folks recommendations for components, classes (preferrably AS 2 friendly), etc that you flash experts use to preload your content (images, sounds, xml).
I'm thinking of using it so that I have an XML doc (or array) with all the content I want to load, loop through all the URLs of the content I want to load and pass it to a preloader that will then do it's job.
So what do you folks use? Code snippets/example usage greatly appreciated!
Many, many thanks!

Recommendations Needed.
Hi I am trying to create a role-playing game with Flash.
How I organise the game is by dividing it into five different modules.
Each modules are working ok separetely but I have great difficulties when integrating all five modules together.
Some problems I face:
1. Confusion over the complexity of many nested mcs from different modules interacting with one another
2. How to organise my program - use frame concept, or put animation into separate swfs to be called during runtime.
I think I need a good book to reference how to organise a game program. Does anyone out there who can provide with WISDOM or recommendation?
Thanks

Tutorial Recommendations
I am not a flash genious, and most likely will never be one -- way beyond my capacity. I've made my way through a couple "basic/intermediate" books, so I do have a foundation, but I'm interested in learning how to do a specific "application" -- not for a client or money, but just because I find it interesting.
Here's a description of what I'd like to learn how to create:
Within a defined space, is an object in full view. When you click on the object, a zoom occurs within the defined space (at which point you can mouse drag the image to view various points on the object)
Anyone generous enough to share some information, or direction to good information?

Server Recommendations
Hi, everyone.
I am having some server issues. We are currently trying to run a flash movie (heavy on externally-loaded images and video) on a virtual private server with about 2 GB of space. Our marketing 'experts' sent out an email to about 300,000 people. Long story short, the server couldn't handle it. We ended up taking down the flash version and pointed to the html version.
I have been given the green light to purchase a new server. Anyone have any ideas on what a safe amount of space and transfer would be? I don't anticipate having to produce such heavy movies in the future, but I want to be prepared if we do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Recommendations On Where To Start?
Hello everyone,
I just picked up MX Studio 2004 Professional, and I have no clue how to use it. I've been developing professionally for about 12 years, mostly in Visual Foxpro, SQL Server, VS.NET (using C#). At my local bookstore are some books that look interesting, but I'm not sure which one to grab. They are both from the "training from the source" series, one is Flash MX 2004, the other is Action Script in Flash MX 2004 (I'm not 100% sure on my recollection of the titles). Anyway, I've kinda always been more of a coder rather then using the visual tools. I'm not sure how to approach trying to figure out Flash though. Any insight would be very appreciated. Have a great day,
John

Someone else handed them to be, but if I get the original WAV's, does anyone have any tips for encoding them as MP3's for import into Flash? Thanks in advance!

Any Recommendations For A Flash CMS Tool?
I am looking at possible solutions to allow my client to edit the all flash site we are creating for them.
I have looked at several flash CMS tools, but cannot decide which would be best, if any, for this project.
It is a large site with many different pages, all of which will have different layouts/looks. I am leaning towards fcmsPro, just because it writes to a mySQL database, as opposed to XML.
Does anyone have any thoughts, recommendations, warnings on flash CMS technologies? I Would greatly appreciate any input. Thanks!

I will appreciate any recommendations on books or free tutorial websites, although I would prefer books because I can read them in my spare time when I am away from the computer.
The books should be mainly about website making, but any other good books that explains the basics of Flash is also acceptable, since I am pretty new to Flash.
Thank you.

Need Hardware Recommendations For FMS2
I am having a FMS2 enabled site and application built and would like ideas on the best server setup/specs to run the site smoothly. I expect maximum users at any one time on the site at about 600 with about 400 concurrent FMS2 users. I will have 4 "rooms" with one way video and audio feeds (1 to many) and as many as 100, (1 to 1) connections. Although I am more familiar with xServe, I would prefer to use Linux servers if possible. I have 100 megs of local bandwidth for serving out the content. Am I better to go with fewer, more robust servers or more servers with less individual processing power? How much memory per server works best in your experience? Although Adobe's materials do dot suggest that load balancing is needed at my size, should I look into load balancing hardware anyway? All suggestions are most welcome.

Swaping Clips - Any Recommendations
Hi, was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations. I am currently building a site with four sections, each one appearing with it's own transition. Hence for continuity when someone clicks on a link the previous section needs to remain as the background whilst the next section comes in. To achieve I have considered swapping levels or the stakcing order of movie clips, but not entirely sure what the best way/or how to proceed is.
Therefore any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Debugging Recommendations? (websites Or Books)
Does any one know of any website or books that have an extensive section on debugging? I am working in CS3 and most of the files that I'm being given have been written in CS2. I know CS3 has the Debugger, but even that is not the easiest to learn.
