Where Can I Find Some Decent Documentation On Using UI Components?
I find it somewhat inane and an impediment for macromedia to provide components that were made to simplify the process, but fail to provide proper and concise documentation on its usage. Much a like a souped up car, sans the wheels including the steering.

Any One Got Any Decent Tool Tip .fla's?
i am trying to build a tool tip function into an interface. i would like to pull my tool tips in from external xml or txt file. i have managed to get everything to work except to get the text field to auto resize when it is poplated with text. ( i dont want to go in and manually stretch every text box).

now, i have tried using the following commands:

mytextbox.autosize = "left"

mytextbox._width = mytextbox.textWidth;

which both work great... ...in MX!

i really need to be backwardly compatable with version 5.

any tips? (dohhh!)

Anyone Know Where To Get Decent Photos?
I havent got a decent digital camera yet, and I need some good quality images for a sports site - Ive tried discs with like 10,000 photos on but they just have pics of countries and stuff. So does anyone know of a site which lets you use digital images?

Looking For A Decent Tutorial For.......
A flash guestbook cause i cant seem to find one that has a fully functional working guestbook or well set out tutorial that explains it all. There are movies on this site and i think 3 tutorials but nothing is really worth using to get a decent flash guestbook. There must be some way off getting hold of a tutorial for one as there is loads off sites that have flash guestbboks and this is something im wanting to learn. So any links that can be posted will be great.

Need A Link To A Decent One
I'm hoping someone can give me a link to a decent tutorial for the following:

I'm creating a game where the user will be able to program a character (to jump, move, shoot, etc.) based on a screen with drag and drop tiles. So, on one screen, the user will drag a tile to one square that will have an if/then statement attached to it and depending on the answer in the game, the code will call up the action of another tile. It's sort of like an old game for the PSX called Carnage Heart where you program the brain of the character and then sit back and watch to see if your program runs well enough to keep your character alive.

Being only intermediate at AS, I need a tutorial that will tell me how to have the vars attached to the tiles, carry over to the playing field. Whether I can have the user's tile choices write to an external .txt file or some other method, it doesn't matter.

How Do I Do Decent Blood
Ive made (this animation/game thing, but im having problems with the blood on it.

Basically i used frame by frame animation for it, but the problems with this is:

1) it takes up loads of space. Eg. the blood for the chainsaw scene is 1mb of keyframes :S

2)It slows the animation down, as it keeps having to redraw the frames with the blood in.

So has anyone got a good way of drawing cartoony/realistic blood which looks good, but doesnt take up loads of space or slow the animation down?

A Decent F'ing Scroll Bar Please
Does anyone know where I can download a scroll bar for flash that has the following features:

• easing
• blur
• standard UI stuff (clicking on points of scroll track, up/down buttons, mouse wheel support)
• can scroll MCs or dynamic text, snaps to height

I have searched and searched and searched.

I will pay good money for it, whatever. I'm just tired of crap scrollbars.

Decent Preloader Tutorial
Is there a decent tutorial ANYWHERE for preloaders. The kind of language I keep finding in these tutorials is obviously for people who already know how to use preloaders. When are people gonna realize that tutorials are also for people that don't know what they are dealing with. I'm relatively smart, but the everyday language to these people is still something I am learning.

Looking For A Decent Scrolling Tutorial
In a class right now, and am trying to find a tutorial that will help me scroll a movie clip with some sort of button or slider where I can customize the look, ie, the scroller's position & size on the stage (to the right of the buttons), the graphic/MC being scrolled, and the size of the mask (i am assuming masking is a needed component in this setup).

(I intend to have buttons in this movie clip that reveal an image or whatever when pressed/released)

Decent AS3 Offline References?
Hello there,

I'm going on holiday soon and it's highly likely I'm gonna have some time to kill on my trip with my laptop, so I'm wondering if anybody has any ideas on obtaining a good offline reference. I'm thinking more specifically about getting an offline version of Adobe LiveDocs by caching it maybe? I'm not sure exactly how to do this, nor if it's against the rules. Also, I'm open to other methods, but being that I'm travelling, I don't wish to carry anything paper-based

Hey guys im gettin a little bored with my site design its happy enough and I like it for my first flash site but i wanna add a cool effect or summet somewhere on the page the pages are dynamically loaded so i would like it to stay there all the time but probably static just the animation at the start

A Decent Loading Progress Script
I want to write a progress script that will show the progress of a loading movie. The basic method is to stop() until getBytesTotal/getBytesLoaded equal 100%. But, my movie has a lot of exported (linkage) symbols, and so the loading frame won't even display until all of those linkage symbols are loaded, which is about 190Kb, which means it takes forever on a dialup.

The other method I have tried is writing a separate SWF file that attaches the main SWF file to a holder movieClip using loadMovie, but this screws up the targetting of the main SWF.

Any one got any suggestions?

How Do You Make HTML Look Decent In Flash?
I have created files in Dreamweaver and despite using tables and trying to center, it starts out looking crummy and every change gets worse. Do the Macromedia Dreamweaver people and Flash people talk?

Is there a trick I am missing?

I am setting the text box to HTML via the myvariable.htmlText = true and I am not sure what else to do. The help files are, as usual, helpless. I thought that if I let DreamweaverMX format the HTML, surely it would work in FashMX. Apparently not. Does anyone have any secrets to pass?

Any Decent Drag & Drop Tutorials?
It has been quite a while since I've used flash (let's just say my last version of Flash I worked on was version 4). Now, I am needing to get back into it for a project at my full-time job.

The concept is for this new type of jewelry (Pandora and Trollbeads) where a person can buy a bracelet and then buy/add beads to it. My job is to create a "build a bracelet" section where the user can drag and drop beads onto the bracelet to see how they would look together.

I've done a search here and only found questions. I've searched Google as well and found a few but many are fee-based. Just wondering if anyone knows any decent sites of tutorials on the whole drag and drop (snap to spot specifically)?

There are going to be a few other interesting things I'll need to work out on this project as well, but one step at a time.

Decent Free MP3 Flash Player? Can You Help?
So sorry if this has been asked a million times before, but I wanted some recent opinions of what is good or not... I've been doing some researching around on the internet and have been trying to work out which Flash based MP3 player would be best for my web site...

I have a selection of MP3s that are on my site, which showcases some music of mine. Ideally, I would like these to just be streamed, to stop them from being downloaded (ala MySpace). I post things up on music forums sometimes, and instead of putting a link to a MP3 on there I'd really like to put a link to my web site that would then trigger off an MP3 in the player - if you see what I mean?

Can anybody recommend a free MP3 Flash player that can stream my MP3s stored on my web site, as well as being able to trigger off any particular MP3 by passing a variable or URL to it?

I'm looking to put together a quick, simple but modern looking Video picker and player using Flash 8 or only Actionscript 2.0

Any Decent 3d Class/package For Mc Objects ?
I found Robert Penner's 3d classes in one of ultrashock's demos, but they are very old ! (won't compile for flash 8!)

is there a decent 3d class or package that can control movie clips as 3d objects and that is well optimized for flash 8 and up ?

How Do You Make A Good/decent Flash Site?
I'm sort of new to flash. I was wondering if aybody knows a tutorial out there to show me how to create a good web page. i want to make one with animated buttons, and when you click on the button an animation occurs which brings you to the page. Also I don't know how to make a flash movie inside of a movie..therefore all my animations are on one single timeline. Someone please help!

Insane Problem Finding A Decent Preloader To Do Something Simple.
Ok, So I've tried many different preloaders but none of them do what I need. Im running a multiple swf site and I need a simple preloader to execute when the loadMovie command is called upon. SO basically, I would like a precise preloader (bytesloaded) that just has a gray bar moving up in 14 frames to show that something is happening. Now the problem I am having is here. I want there to be dynamic text, showing the percentage above the gray bar. BUT in the other preloaders it plays it all the way to 100% (100frames), instead of giving the percentage of those 14 frames. SO it will complete the bar moving up, but then the percentage is still counting up to 100%...dont want that. thats an extra 86 frames the indivual has to wait for. Make sense? And then...if possible I would like the preloader to be able to fade out. Now, Im probably shooting for the stars with this but I have to try something, before I give up. Hi everyone.

I want to know if anyone use a methodology do distribute task and for build flas. It is very popular have this type of methodology for actionsript and back-end technology, but for fla I have never seen before.

The problem is that in my office have the as programmers and the flas builders. And the programers need to send a documetation for this builders for how the flas must be constructed. If the inside parts will be in diferentes as, or if will be inside a movie clip. If the external swf will be loaded insided a movie clip or inside a level.

AS Documentation Software
I would like to document my actionscript classes using some sort of documentation software. Do you know of any good documentation software which is easy to use and supports AS?

Also, another thing, does anybody knows a way where I can create my own classes and then when calling their methods in Flash, I would get that sort of help which opens a small light yellow rectangle indicating the parameters for that function (which opens up when you press the "(" key before after typing a function name with various standard functions / methods e.g. trace(). When you write trace and press "(" you get a small light yellow rectangle saying 'trace(message);'. I would really like to have that feature with my own classes).

That would be really helpful if it is possible to have by modifying someway Flash.

I have come to the understanding that AS1 would continue to be supported in future flash authoring environments;

But this one is not nice. In gotapi, I can just type of half of keyword and it shows me all the matches.

Also, the adobe link opens up search results in new window and most of the search results are not relevant. It is tough to browse through them.

If somebody can suggest a better UI for API then it would be great. I was quite happy with gotapi for AS2.

Funny thing is gotapi seems to be using adobe livedocs itself on backend.

Trying To Use Search In Help Documentation
Although all the help books are loaded and i can view their content, I am unable to use the search facility.
I type in a word, hit the search button but whatever content is currently in the right hand panel stays there and doesn't refresh. Could anyone tell me what the problem is?

When I use cfinvoke, my components work just fine. All the examples/articles I find are old / out of date. I think if I query a database and populate a combobox component just once successfully, I think it will be all I need to start kicking butt. I would especially like to see any information on how to use the netconnection debugger because I can't see any errors if they are there.

DoFScommand Documentation
I don't know where to report something like this, but I just spent half an hour or more trying to figure out why my DoFScommand function wasn't being called, and I finally figured out it was because the C is capital. In the documentation for Flash MX, it lists the function name as myMovie_DoFScommand (with a lower-case c) several times in the first few paragraphs.

Is this error fixed in the newest version?

Unclear Documentation
I'm trying to use a server-side script to call a function on the client side, but do not understand the documentation. I have created a function (Test) on the client, but do not understand what I am supposed to put into the ss script. The documentation states that I should use:

application.streams["foo"].send("Test", "hello world");

What am I supposed to put in place of streams["foo"]?

Papervision 2 Documentation?
I need to use one of the 3d drawing API's for flash and I don't know which one to choose. If you search for comparisement on google you don't really find anything usefull. I need the engine to be very fast to draw shaded cubes, and from what I found out, Papervision 2 should do the job, but there is momentarely no documentation for Papervision "great white" as they call it, does anybody know when that would come?

Not really a code question but it concerns AS3.

Ok I got Flash CS4 and one of the many things I dislike about it is the new help/documentation. I really HATE that the documentation appears only in the browser. Does someone knows if there's a way to get the help back in the old format? Like in a little window in the program that is much more usable and readable?
